Who else here is a man in their mid 30s who just wishes to goddamn hell he had a single friend who he could suggest, "Hey, c'mon over and let's try to beat a classic game from our childhood!" So much fun watching this!
I'm quite surprised that Mike had never seen a respawning Birdo/Catherine before. It happened to me all the time growing up playing SMB2. And the second I saw him get so far away from the orb after he killed the boss, I thought to myself, "It's gonna respawn."
culwin Depends on where you look whether Birdo is male or female. My instruction book circa 1987 says "Birdo (misprinted as Ostro): He thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth. He'd rather be called "birdetta."
***** No, he would have made this a KISS game for NES before Nintendo made it SMB2. KISS is the king of fan merchandise. This game has 4 playable charactes and KISS has 4 members, this would have been a great KISS game.
I like how James finally pushes Mike in an intense moment and Mike is like "I know dude, you're making me nervous". Yet Mike is notorious for doing the same to James lol
10:32 Big James points at the screen. 10:42 Little James also points at the screen! I found that part charming, like James is just like he was when he was a kid.
Sure, James and Mike, the coin makes the same sounds as in Mario, but you seem to ignore that this game also has the Power Star straight out of Super Mario Bros. and the POW Block from the original Mario Bros.
Meavy Hetal i call it *upbuilding sound*....... the star!! ........ what? its my way to name that, and noone can stop me!! unless someone would pay me 1 million euro's every year if i dont say it at all by the way, how can you call it a starman? i know nintendo did, but how do they see its male? (completely offtopic, just wanted to ask)
Kurachi84 It should be Starperson. But seriously, how can you even consider it a person just because it's got eyes. Then should we call the hills and clouds from SMB3 Hillman and cloudman respectively? I call it Power Star because it's wat the stars from SM64 are called, I know they're two different things, but I sticked with that name.
James's excitement about Mike going through the levels was so great. it reminded me of all those times you were player two in a 1 player game. So great, guys.
I think they programmed birdo to continually respawn on purpose.mainly because of the 1 level where you need to ride the egg to continue throughout the level.instead of just programing the 1 birdo to do that the had all birdo respon for some reason
Apparently Doki Doki Panic came from Miyamoto wanting to do a vertical styled Mario game. So this game is still retroactively a Mario game, technically
Patrick Gilland Makes sense. Especially when you consider Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels is just a level pack. Something Nintendo does not usually do.
OrkTv Japanophiles like to keep the myth going that we somehow got fucked over by not getting the Japanese version of SMB2. It was a brilliant decision not to bring it over. It was dated looking and too difficult. By converting Doki Doki Panic, they kept the brand fresh. Also, like InsaneCROW said, Miyamoto had more involvement with U.S. SMB2 than he did with the Japanese version.
MyNameIsChris Actually, that is the good ending. they were playing with saved data that already beat with 4 characters. the bad ending sends you straight back to the title screen after you defeat Wort.
You guys seemed to be wondering why Doki Doki Panic was chosen to become Mario 2. It's actually slightly more complex, Doki Doki Panic was originally made as a sequel to SMB1 by the creator of Super Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto. He was much more involved in the creation of Doki Doki Panic than he was with the Japanese SMB2 (Lost Levels or whatever). He then signed a contract with Fuji to turn it into Doki Doki Panic and add characters which were mascots for Fuji's Yume Kojō '87 event. This was then released in Japan and Nintendo of America decided that SMB2J was too difficult and too similar to SMB1 so Miyamoto gave Doki Doki Panic a quick re-skin and it became SMB2 (USA).
Awesome work guys! I love watching you guys go back and play games like this. I think most people who grew up with NES eventually learned of Doki Doki Panic! somehow, but very few of us would ever dream of playing it on a famicom. You're legends.
So, to summarize Doki Doki Panic: -No run button -Less detailed animations -SFX and music much better in SMB2 -Uninspired graphics (Phanto, bonus screen) -No Clawgrip -Mandatory to beat every level with all four characters to get the good ending +Explosions say "BOM" instead of "BOMB". That's cute. Super Mario Bros. 2 looks so, so good next to this version.
Temmie Plays! It is the other way around, Americans got the upgraded version of this. This was supposed to be a Mario game but they settled for The Lost Levels. When they called Japan and said "Yo what's this BS? It's NES Dark Souls!" they sent a modified version of Doki Doki Panic and Nintendo of America accepted it, mass produced it and it became Super Mario 2
I just want to say, this channel has been the coolest channel ever, thanks for all the laughs, and the good game advice. I hope this channel grows bigger and more people watch your videos. Good luck, and think you!
Thanks again for going through the effort of giving us the authentic experience! A great watch and entertaining as always. Perhaps, even more educational this time around ;)
12:38, approaching Wart with 1 of 2 hexes: "I'm on my last guy too." 12:49, fighting Wart with 3 hexes: or not. :p Glad you went back through to finish it and see the ending, cool couple of videos.
I love how people don't consider this game a Mario game because they know of this game, yet they don't know the history which lead to this game's creation as its a modded Mario game. Lets begin our history lesson back just after smb was released, research and development went into a new Mario engine which was to allow vertical scrolling as well as horizontal scrolling and screen warping (Sound familiar?). Fuji Television approached Nintendo about making a game for their Yume Kojō '87 event which used characters created by Fuji Television, they being Imajin, Lina, Mama, Papa, Poki and Piki and Rusa (4 main player chars, the two children and the monkey), all the other characters in the game were made by Nintendo. Japan originally wanted to stick to the formula for Mario they knew as it did so well before in their previous game, however the Japan SMB2 was meant for those who knew SMB like the back of their hand and wanted more of a challenge and they did deliver. However they did know that this drastic change in difficulty may turn off a lot of people who played SMB and then couldn't make it through the brutal difficulty that the Japan SMB2 had and they did not want to risk the Mario brand with that kind of chance. So now we end up at when Doki Doki Panic was remade into the American SMB2, changes were made along with bug fixes and new sprites to make it look and sound more Mario-esque. There we see how the original Mario engine (the experimental one in development) for what was suppose to be a new Mario game get turned into Doki Doki Panic, and then turned back into a Mario game. So next time someone tells you that SMB2 (The American one) is not a real Mario game, hit them with this slab of information and prove to them that their wrong.
In Perú we got both the Nintendo USA and some sort of a Famicom. It looked exactly like a Famicom but it was called MAXPLAY and it came with 100 games and with orange Turbo A and B buttons. I remember at the time, around 1988, both games were all over: Mario Bros 2. on both NES and Famicom cartridges but also Doki Doki Panic on a Famicom cartridge! We all not only thought that the MAXPLAY (Famicom) was a copy of the NES USA but also that all of its colorful games/cartridges were hacks, bootlegs, copies (some of them actually were since I remember seeing up to Mario 9) of NES USA including DDP a "copy" of SMB2. Who knew that it ended up being the opposite!
"It's _Doki Doki Panic_. Now we know why it's called that". Yup! After seeing you guys playing this game with its thrilling sections of enemies to run into, I definitely get why the game is called like that.
Neil Purcell Yeah, I thought it was a shame they didn't elaborate on that white Mouser more. Though, to be honest, before finding out that he was literally the only new enemy in the American Super Mario Bros. 2/Super Mario USA, I barely even remembered that he existed. He might've been equally forgettable to James and Mike.
Ah, the "Returning Birdo" glitch... I got that all the time on the SNES "All Stars" version. And I was the only one who got it- I'd move just barely offscreen sliding or jumping back up tossing the egg, and it'd be back. Someone else who saw it would try it to show their friend, it wouldn't do it for them. Either I had the touch getting this to work, or the game really hated me, lol. Thank you for having an example of it I can use to prove that's real with now.
Jacob Lapsley the character is, but the real life bootsy is actually some total god of gaming. check out the video where he beats silver surfer in one sitting
If you don't like the set controllers on the famicom, the 15 pin expansion port can be used for 3rd party controllers. With an adapter you could also connect NES controllers to the Famicom via it's 15 pin DA port.
I remember finishing mario 2 as a kid and always feeling sad with the little music when mario was sleeping. I felt bad for wart when they'd show him laughing then disappearing at the end. Good times.
I watched this on Gamecenter CX. It's a good job you got this from someone who had already played the game before, because you need to beat the game with all the characters to see the ending.
You have to finish the game with all of the characters in order to see the real ending. As you guys mentioned it and we saw in the previous episode, someone must have already played it all that's why you guys were able to see the real ending. The ending with one character is when the character opens some sort of container and frees those little fairies that carry the body of the final boss away.
I'm actually okay with James referencing himself on J&MM, but I especially like it when he references his lesser known gems like The Boy Who Could Telepathically Tell If Butter Has Salt In It Or Not.
In SMB2 and Doki Doki Panic, if an enemy is not on-screen and you go back to where it starts, it will appear again. There can only ever be one Crystal Orb, and that is persistent sort of like a Key or mushroom block, so A Birdo that is supposed to spawn holding a crystal orb (or a key) will not spawn with one if there is one elsewhere in the current area.
Doki Doki Panic started out as a prototype for Mario Bros 2 that was supposed to combine side-scrolling with lateral-scrolling. It was eventually turned into Doki Doki Panic when a Nintendo executive thought that the lateral-scrolling was not polished enough for a Mario game.
darkalter2000 I don't think it works that way. Lateral scrolling is side scrolling. Even if you use lateral to mean perpendicular, it would be perpendicular to the side. Up and down, or vertical, is the opposite of lateral.
4:12 I finally found the video James was talking about. It's a cinemassacer video called the boy who could telepathically know if butter has salt in it or not.
James and Mike, Do you realize that Miyamoto made Doki Doki Panic? It's not like they just chose some random game that was made by some random developer to replace an American Mario game. Just pointing that out because in this episode they seemed to wonder why this game was chosen. Like on the part about the coin noise being the same as Mario, they said (paraphrasing) "I wonder if that's why they chose this game to be American Mario 2?" :P no, that's cause Miyamoto made both games. Anyone else notice how they were talking about things that originated in this game, at 6:55 they got the super star/flashing star that makes you invincible and kill everything on contact, which had originated in Super Mario Bros, which was before this. I just thought it was interesting, because in America we're so used to thinking about this game as Mario 2 that it didn't even cross their minds. That's a clue though, that it's not some random game, cause nintendo probably wouldn't have been happy that a game ripped off the super star. ya know? Miyamoto being the creator of all the ideas in the game, are why they were all easily able to be put into the Mario universe, because he's reusing his own ideas :) Good episode guys PS Doki Doki Panic's full title translates to Dream Factory 87. It was created as a tech demo to demonstrate vertical scrolling. (maybe that has something to do with the waterfall from Hell lol)
Blood1397violet No. As of right now we've done 135 episodes. It takes a bit longer these days to make episodes because we want to try and keep the quality up. We're working on the next AVGN episode. We have no plans of ever stopping. We just have a lot of projects to juggle and want to deliver good material. So it can take time. - Mike
Cinemassacre You know, I just wanted to take a few seconds and say this. Thanks for being so cool about the things fans ask and always taking the time to reply to comments when you can. Keep being awesome, Mike. Always nice to see the super popular people staying in touch with their fans.
I used to think Wart was getting cremated rather than beat up at the end. Also, I agree with MIke about the weirdly detailed yelps and screams the bosses make before he got interrupted by the respawning Birdo.
Its cool in episodes like these seeing the Famicom in action, as it looks so different to the NES and had exclusive games. What did the UK NES look like? I've only seen the US and Japanese ones. I can see why the changed the waterfall for SMB2, very distracting :D
I thought the story went SMB 2 was being developed as a Mario game then Fuju asked to use it for a promotion and Nintendo said yes so they swapped the char pallets and released it early as Doki Doki. It was intended to be a Mario game from the start. Also, the Bomb omb carried over to SMB3 and became an integral resident of the Mushroom Kingdom
5:10 I don't know if it is a glitch or some kind of a secret but that happens because of the respawning. When you beat Birdo anywere and then go back and come back again, Birdo will respawn but will not be holding the orb you have to pick up. That happened to me on SMB2.
I can't believe that so much of Doki Doki Panic is intact in SMB2, I always thought that only the level designs and game mechanics were what Nintendo Copy & Pasted, but Shy Guy's, Birdo and Wart all came from Doki Doki!
Who else here is a man in their mid 30s who just wishes to goddamn hell he had a single friend who he could suggest, "Hey, c'mon over and let's try to beat a classic game from our childhood!" So much fun watching this!
I'm a gamergirl whose always been a solo player....
17 and i do that. As crazy as it sounds, 90% of people my age have played these old NES and SNES (and some even N64) when we were little.
Patrick, i wish i could have a friend
I'm 42 and wish that. No friends, no family no nothing. Modern society is not good for us. Humans have never been more selfish and separated.
yup!!
He'd rather be called "birdetta."
culwin It's a guy.
MistareFusion I always thought the ninja gaiden syndrome with the birdo respawning walk off screen come back and there it is again.
MistareFusion Pretty much ALL enemies respawn VERY quickly in Doki Doki Panic/SMB2.
Reminds me of the mouser glitch. I ran to the right, right after beating it and then there were 2 mousers.
Can't unsee Gene Simmons. That's hilarious.
Thanatos420 My favorite part of this video. Awesome observation by James.
- MIke
Cinemassacre Knowing Gene, if he was aware of that image back then, he would have sued the shit out of the makers of _Doki Doki Panic_.
***** In a heartbeat.
***** No, he would have made this a KISS game for NES before Nintendo made it SMB2. KISS is the king of fan merchandise. This game has 4 playable charactes and KISS has 4 members, this would have been a great KISS game.
Pehmokettu If they were still wearing the make up in the 80's, it probably would've happened.
The clip of you from 1989 @10:42 was perfect. Great addition :)
ChessNetwork Jerry watches Cinemassacre?! Awesome! :D
Kid James must be the sweetest thing ever
How smart for him that he filmed his video game playing from a young age.
SILENCE CHECKMARK 🙄
James found his calling from a very young age. That's awesome.
I like how James finally pushes Mike in an intense moment and Mike is like "I know dude, you're making me nervous". Yet Mike is notorious for doing the same to James lol
I loved it, it was pure dudeness right there.
10:32
Big James points at the screen.
10:42
Little James also points at the screen!
I found that part charming, like James is just like he was when he was a kid.
SILENCE CHECKMARK 🙄
"Don't look directly at the water."
"I looked at the water, Ray!"
Little James is so pure. No swearsies.
Sure, James and Mike, the coin makes the same sounds as in Mario, but you seem to ignore that this game also has the Power Star straight out of Super Mario Bros. and the POW Block from the original Mario Bros.
KrossoverGod "he's" actually called a STARMAN by the way :)
DefinitivNichtSascha in SMB 1 & 2 it is.whatever Nintendo decides to change it to after that is nonsense.
I CALL IT WHATEVER THE FUCK I WANT >:(
Meavy Hetal i call it *upbuilding sound*....... the star!!
........ what? its my way to name that, and noone can stop me!!
unless someone would pay me 1 million euro's every year if i dont say it at all
by the way, how can you call it a starman? i know nintendo did, but how do they see its male? (completely offtopic, just wanted to ask)
Kurachi84
It should be Starperson. But seriously, how can you even consider it a person just because it's got eyes. Then should we call the hills and clouds from SMB3 Hillman and cloudman respectively?
I call it Power Star because it's wat the stars from SM64 are called, I know they're two different things, but I sticked with that name.
"That's Bullshit!"
Is Mike actually Tommy Waseau from The Room?!
CarozQH Oh hai, James!
Hey goomba! I love you!
CarozQH I dinna hit Peach. I did NAWT! oh hai Luigi!
Aniway, how's your sex life?
CarozQH I did not hit her its not true I DID NOT...
oh hi mark!
Mike:This is bullsh*t I killed him.
Birdo:No you didn't.
16ktsgamma Birdo: OR NOT
Birdo pulled a Dio Brando.
No wonder why I've identified myself with James right from the start! He likes old games and old rock n'roll too!
Naw, he respawned in a later level too without going off the screen.
Mike's sarcasm through out these 2 videos is great Cx
Apparently Doki Doki Panic came from Miyamoto wanting to do a vertical styled Mario game. So this game is still retroactively a Mario game, technically
Patrick Gilland In a way, that means the Super Mario Bros. 2 we got outside of Japan really was the true sequel all along.
Patrick Gilland Makes sense. Especially when you consider Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels is just a level pack. Something Nintendo does not usually do.

Check DYK Gaming Mario Part 4 and if that doesn't convince you, the Wikipedia article. This has been stated by Miyamoto himself.

Its like a saga. "Will James and Mike fix the Disk Drive in time for the next episode? Stay tuned!"
That's amazing that you guys still have the footage of James playing that game as a kid
That was actually the bad ending. To get the good ending, you have to beat the game with all 4 characters.

MyNameIsChris How is the good ending different?
Vic Vinegar This game is also a dream.
James and Mike Mondays actually have me looking forward to Mondays.
I love how upset Mike gets when birdo respawns. It's funny watching adults play this game and get just as into it as they would have as kids. :)

Super Mario Bros. 2 looks so, so good next to this version.

You did kill the Birdo but walking back so far to the left probably caused the spawning event to be retriggered giving you a second Birdo.
Fantastic play-through as always guys, keep up the fantastic work!
Of "Lost Levels", "Doki Doki Panic", and SMB2 US, I definitely think we got the best game.
It's so awesome you still have the footage of playing SMB2 in 1989 :)
Intense, great 2 part episode. You guys are the best!
There's always been a place in my heart fro SMB2. In didn't know this version existed. Good video!

Fyi birdo always spawns back if you walk away from the area you killed him, walk off screen and he'll come back everytime.
It's not unusual for Birdo to re-spawn.
I love your name xD
Ryan Brandt We do too. I might as well shill for the channel-- Check out our stuff.
There are actually three Mousers. One of them was replaced with Clawgrip.

lol. the bugs looking up her dress. you have a sick mind, Mr. Rolfe XD
It was nice meeting you guys at TooManyGames. Keep up the great work.
Birdo always respawn, and all common enemies too. I didn't know about another ending by beating the game with al characters, that's cool
James gets surprised at that! man, you'd love watching me play it.
Doki Doki Panic started out as a prototype for Mario Bros 2 that was supposed to combine side-scrolling with lateral-scrolling. It was eventually turned into Doki Doki Panic when a Nintendo executive thought that the lateral-scrolling was not polished enough for a Mario game.
darkalter2000 you mean vertical scrolling. lateral means to the side.
Lateral from the regular kind.
darkalter2000 I don't think it works that way. Lateral scrolling is side scrolling. Even if you use lateral to mean perpendicular, it would be perpendicular to the side. Up and down, or vertical, is the opposite of lateral.
***** *shrugs* It's not like you didn
Can you guys do a 6 player game and have James, Mike, Bootsy, Kyle, Pat, and Jon? That would be awesome lol Great vid as always.
4:12 I finally found the video James was talking about. It's a cinemassacer video called the boy who could telepathically know if butter has salt in it or not.
I was surprised to see an invincibility star in Doki Doki.
5:09 actually happens in the NES game, too. I had it happen when I was a kid, several times.
I miss the Famicon.
I was in Japan frequently growing up.and had a Famicon and super Famicon before Nintendos.
That's a clue though, that it's not some random game, cause nintendo probably wouldn't have been happy that a game ripped off the super star. ya know? Miyamoto being the creator of all the ideas in the game, are why they were all easily able to be put into the Mario universe, because he's reusing his own ideas :) Good episode guys
PS Doki Doki Panic's full title translates to Dream Factory 87. It was created as a tech demo to demonstrate vertical scrolling. (maybe that has something to do with the waterfall from Hell lol)
Mike talking about how it's good when it's sweaty and making it hard makes me giggle like the grown ass man I am.. wait what?
Thanks a million!
Has he stopped making AVGN episodes ?
Blood1397violet No. As of right now we've done 135 episodes. It takes a bit longer these days to make episodes because we want to try and keep the quality up. We're working on the next AVGN episode. We have no plans of ever stopping. We just have a lot of projects to juggle and want to deliver good material. So it can take time.
- Mike
Blood1397violet pretty much
"Rome wasn't built in a day and neither were AVGN videos." I read that in a book once.
Cinemassacre You know, I just wanted to take a few seconds and say this. Thanks for being so cool about the things fans ask and always taking the time to reply to comments when you can. Keep being awesome, Mike. Always nice to see the super popular people staying in touch with their fans.
Cinemassacre This is a very professional way of doing things!
Thanks for the follow up, guys! Looks like it was fun!
3:39 Bad Luck Bootsy can get all three cherries? That must be his only gift.
haha that scene of james playing as a kid so cute!
I have had the exact same happen to me multiple times on that Birdo coming back again.
Mike, you the man, thanks for entertaning me with de game nerd.
1:45 That "cloud" is an egg you get a dragon from in the "Adventure island 2" game.
The days are gone 😢
5:10 I don't know if it is a glitch or some kind of a secret but that happens because of the respawning. When you beat Birdo anywere and then go back and come back again, Birdo will respawn but will not be holding the orb you have to pick up. That happened to me on SMB2.
I like the noise when Birdo dies too.
I can't believe that so much of Doki Doki Panic is intact in SMB2, I always thought that only the level designs and game mechanics were what Nintendo Copy & Pasted, but Shy Guy's, Birdo and Wart all came from Doki Doki!
If you're going into the FDS games make sure you check out Miracle of Almana
It's not that it two Mousers, its that instead of Clawgrip (Clawglip), its a White Mouser.
t was awesome to get to see this version of the game.
Totally enjoyed this
