    In this episode I take apart an Xbox 360 in order to clean it. Red-ring-of-death (RROD), loud fans - all of these issues can be related to a dirty Xbox.

    CHANNEL STATEMENT: This is a channel about my relationship with stuff. We all need to have a better relationship with the stuff in our lives - we have too much of it, and most of it’s junk. If nothing else I hope you take away with you an interest in the stuff in your life - a curiosity for how it’s made - why it’s good or bad - and perhaps even inspiration to build new stuff or fix what you’ve got. Having said that - the internet is a terrible place to learn anything. Unless you independently verify what you learn - you’ll never know if it was right or wrong or made up completely…. Unfortunately disinformation is both the currency and the bane of our era. I’m no expert in anything you’ll see here. I don’t want you to think that I am. Through my job I have access to people who are - and I’ve learned from them over the last couple of decades and become someone who is curious about stuff, brave about stuff , and foolish enough to try and make a youtube channel about my relationship with stuff all at the same time.
    DISCLAIMER / PLEASE READ: In making this channel I will put more effort into making the content accurate, safe and correct than most - but that doesn’t mean I can’t be wrong. Accordingly I can’t guarantee or warranty any specific outcome for viewers should they attempt something similar to what they see on the channel. I encourage you not to copy projects you see here directly but build on them - discuss them with experts in your life, and make them better - make them work safely for you. We all need to figure out a better way to own stuff - this channel is meant to illustrate my experience with that, promote learning, have some fun, and challenge myself. Working with any tool or on any project can lead to unintended results - including injury and damage to property. Don’t work beyond your capability. In the same way I have to take complete responsibility for the outcome of my endeavours as recorded here, and my own safety and the safety of those around me - you have to do the same….. Use the information here at your own risk. Be safe, have fun, proceed with the appropriate caution for your situation….

    My brother passed away a long time ago and I found his old 360 sitting around and thought I might as well clean it. Thanks for the help, this old thing needed it 👍

      There's definitely worse things they could have done. They could be using contact cement to hold it together, really make it impossible then.😂

    Instead of the xbox opening tool you can modify a mustach comb to line up cut excess ones away

    The tabs on the backside. I used a sim card tool to push them while keeping tension on one side. A simcard tool has the length and is small enough to work pretty well. Never popped a 360 open and it took me less than a minute. iFixIt kits ftw.

    A flat blunt knife worked on the HDMI shell clasps here. Plus some super glue and a bandaid.

    Excellent video. Made the process pretty damn easy. For those struggling due to lack of tools.....just buy an electronics precision screwdriver set. $20-$30 and it'll make life way easier when opening almost all your electronics. Really pays for itself.

    I have that same xbox 360 that needs a serious cleaning what type of tools would you recommend? Also would a container of forced air be safe to clean out the difficult to reach areas?

    Awesome tutorial, very clear directions, thank you! After failing to troubleshoot an apparent power supply issue with my console, it turned out there was a spider living on the motherboard! Now I can get back to trying to beat Akumu mode on The Evil Within (with far less background noise, too).
    P.S. For the tiny tabs at 4:51, I used one of those little SIM card tools.

    5:42 With the same exact tools here, prying popped it apart, actually needed to, after pushing all the tabs through with the little ended circle thing. Got nervous and stared praying and it came apart easy

    If you have an old unit like this and have never cleaned it, its a good idea to replace the thermal paste while you are in there. But note, the X-Clamps for the heat sinks are a nightmare to remove.

    • @winlover37
      @winlover37 7 месяцев назад

      I actually found a technique here that helped me out with the xclamps. With a small enough screwdriver I just placed it in a hole between the standoff and the clamp, and gently pulled the screwdriver towards me. This popped the opposite end off, rinse repeat for the others.

    I'm surprised you didn't go a few steps further by pulling the motherboard and giving it an alcohol scrub along with a new thermal paste application. Then soaking the plastics in warm water before scrubbing.
