I was donated a broken XBOX 360 Slim. The main component that wasn’t working was the DVD drive but since this is a restoration project I fully dissasemble the whole console and give it a deep clean. Additionally, I show how to remove the heat sink and re-apply brand new thermal paste. So the question is, can I make this XBOX 360 Slim look and work like new?! Full XBOX 360 Slim TEARDOWN, step by step!

I got into modding consoles by fixing old broken ones too - my childhood gameboy suffered from pretty bad battery corrosion, but I was able to fix it after watching some YT videos, which then led me to seeing how relatively easy modding was, and here I am, thousands of dollars later lol. Great video as always, Tito!
Thanks buddy! We gotta stretch that dollar as much as we can. This hobby can get expensive if we don’t 😅 cheers buddy!!
wow this is perfect, ive been finding these discarded 360 Slims at a local record shop for less than $10, and they are all very similar to this one. just needs a bit of love and most of them will work!
Nice dude! Yeah they’re pretty robust machines, I’m sure you could fix them up nice
I'm about to try this in a couple weeks saw one for around $5 where it only doesn't read disks
There exists insulation foam tape for insulating doors and whatnot at any home improvement store. Should work fine for this. Just measure your width and foam depth and buy a roll of it.
Yeah, I thought about doing that. I’ll need to get some thing foam
You call it a metal spudger, I call it a dab tool 🌿💨🤣
4:14 an easy way to access this tab is removing the sticker. It has a hole near the Dolby Digital logo, just put something like a paper clip and it releases the latch. Doing as shown works too but it can scratch the plastic
There is something therapeutic about watching you disassemble, clean, and reassemble the 360 back to working condition.
Disassembling, cleaning and repairing consoles is super satisfying. Totally agree!
Man I did this like two months ago and I really struggled with those tabs on the back lol I wish I had waited for this. Great video as always, I'd love to see a RGH vid in the future or a PS3 Slim restoration.
Thank you! Ill have to go an rgb for sure 👍
Very timely, I just acquired one of these slim consoles. Very nice that I don't have to go searching for a good tear down video.
I hope it helps you 👍
11:13 No one but TronicsFix can apply the Perfect Amount of Thermal Paste™
This is true!
It was really satisfying to watch you clean and patch up this 360, and was a good reminder for me to give some love to my older consoles as well.
Thanks for another great video, even if I was a little sad that you didn't say T 10 Torx screw another fifteen times during reassembly! 😂
Thank you Nathan! Haha, yeah there are certainly a lot of t10 torx screws on the console 😅
Hey. Just be glad he didn't say Torx SECURITY screws. The PS3 Slim has those and they're a right pain in the tuchus.
Great video Tito. Brings back memories of the 3 xbox 360s i went through with RRoD. Sadly they are deep in my family garage 9000km away. I am trying to gift them to a friend who will do a restoration and repair. Long live the 360. Please do a 360 controller repair and upgrade in future videos.
I’ll definitely have to look into doing some controller repair videos for sure since those tend to fail often 👍
Found the video and the channel out today, because RUclips recommended this one to me.
Great video, subscribed.
Though I have to disagree when you say "a 360 without a disc tray may as well be a massive paperweight" lol
Thank you so much 🙏 I hope you enjoy some of my other videos 😁
Watching this halfway through 2023 after I got ripped off buying a 360 slim... Doesn't even have a hard drive.. I could resell it for what I paid for but I'm not a pos. So I''m gunna try to refurbish it myself now thanks to this video.
Good video, I do what you do and look for broken consoles, mainly when the disc drives don't work as that's the easiest fix for me at the moment as I learn more and more. Plus if something has a USB port or memory card slot, you can pretty much make anything work again one way or another.
I begin to watch your vídeos just a few days and I'm loving the quality and how patient you are.
Thank you Ednaldo! I’m glad that you found my channel and that you’re enjoying the videos! Cheers!
The honor was all mine. If anything I want to thank you for helping me clear out my garage. Sometimes I feel like I am drowning in broken consoles over here! 🤣
That sounds like a good problem to have 😁👍
Great video! I have a 360 Slim that quit connecting to controllers. I also have one with a stuck disk tray. Looks like it’s time to tear them down and do a refurb. I can see you take your time and do it the right way. So I will be following this video to tear them down.
To fix the connection issue you could probably replace the Rf board. I’m sure you can buy one for cheap on eBay👍 and replace it while doing the refurb 😁
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks for the tip.
I own a Japanese X360 launch model, and I bought a PAL version of the slim (looked exactly like this one) to play games that were locked to the PAL region.
Many of the X360 games were region free so I survived on my Japanese console. But Gears of War 3 was locked so bought my slim to play that.
Unfortunately I was burgled and they took the slim console, but left the older fat console which I still have to this day. Had to disassemble it a couple of years ago due to the same issue - the drive didn't eject. Turned out to be the rubber eject belt that needed boiling and the drive itself needed cleaning (especially where the belt touched; it gets dusty and oily over time).
Enjoyed the video!
Dude, sorry to hear about your slim, but glad you were able to fix your other one. Happy you enjoyed the video buddy 🙏
@@MachoNachoProductions Cheers fella!
One of the things you can do with a finicky DVD is to remove the belt and boil it for a couple of minutes keeping it off the bottom of the pan, this restores some of the elasticity so that it doesn't slip, or you can simply find replacements as the belt is often time one of the biggest issues with these. I RGH'd 2 then converted to RGH 3 on mine. I put a 2 TB drive in it and no longer have to switch disks and since I don't play it online as I have a Series X for that it makes for a better experience.
Yes! Thank you for mentioning that. It can be a great solution if you can’t get a replacement
Lowes sells garage door foam. It’s the same style of foam but sold in rolls. Make sure to get the correct height when purchasing. I’m certain there’s a way to get that foam in sheet form as well for the other gaskets.
Another great video. Of note, what is the grease that you applied to the rails on the optical drive? I think I have a 360 that is heading towards becoming prone to failure with opening. For jrpgs, you might consider the system exclusive, Magna Carta 2; and one of my favorites, Lost Odyssey.
Thank you so much for the shout out! Lots of love from our channel to yours!
Absolutely brother! I should be thanking you though 🙏😁! Cheers buddy!!
The thought of disassembling things makes me so nervous but I'd love to be able to give some tlc to my older consoles like this 💖
Find the cheapest broken console you can and give it a try 😁
are you planning on revisiting the original 360 versions? i'd love to know about replacing the stock fans with something quieter, or maybe even if it's possible to upgrade the disc drive to something that is better and quieter, stuff like that. great video!
RGH mod next? You don't need a glitch chip anymore, just a raspberry pi pico to overwrite de nand (some models) and a postfix (some models)
We’ll have to see 😉
this video got me wanting to take apart my brothers Xbox One Slim to clean it and give it new thermal paste. it runs HOT and it’s probably nasty on the inside
I feel exactly the same and got into retro games in the same way. Great work Tito!
That’s awesome Scruffy! Glad you had a similar start to me getting into retro games! I absolutely love making old beat up console look new 😁. Cheers buddy!
I’d love to see a tear down and clean of a 360 E. Been thinking about getting me one.
Nice video, what IPA are you using? Looking to breakdown my first 360 and seen conflicting opinions on the % to use and so on
I used to mod my old 360s with electrical tape to make matte black disc drives, I enjoyed the video by the way, I’m now going to watch all of your videos since this one was so entertaining lol
Thank you! Hope you enjoy the other videos in the channel
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks man have a great day/night
I can't believe how good it looks after cleaning! Good job Tito!
Thanks Ricky! I really love the results too 🙏☺️
When you put the heatsink block back onto the CPU and I saw the copper bit, I had thought you put it back on upside down. WAs very confused until I went back and realized that it was suppose to be that way. So used to the copper being placed on top of the CPU, lol
Love the content! Also I really appreciate all of the work you put into the production value of your videos, they’re a joy to watch.
Thank you so much Tyler! So glad you’re enjoying the videos
I just picked up a 360 slim off of eBay. I think it's in a good spot, price wise, for somebody looking to buy. I saw a bunch of examples that people weren't even bidding on and was able to grab a 256gb Holiday Bundle model with 12 games and 2 controllers for $39 + shipping. Yeah I couldn't believe it either especially as it was verified working. I would like to clean and re-paste it, though since it is getting on for a decade old. I think I need to get myself one of those metal spudgers first though.
Great instructions on disassembling the system. This system definitely requires more patience and coaxing to open up.
Great video! Just learned about 303 Aerospace Protectant.
I've restored a couple of the fat model Xbox 360's and will be restoring one of this same model slim one soon. The disc tray issue could have been the rubber band is slipping. Easy fix by cleaning it or reducing resistance of the tray (like you did).
Check out the 360 game Ninja Blade.
Just asking in case you could answer...
My old Xbox360 recently started having issues with the "disc tray open button" not responding properly when one slides over the button...
Do you know what the problem could be?
Would love to see more refurbishing videos like this from you…great video Tito
I am definitely planning on doing more 😁😉 I really enjoy cleaning up and repairing these consoles! Stay tuned Ethan!
May I ask you something?
If a 360slim tray button is sometimes responding, but mostly not...what could one do to fix the problem?
I re pasted my xbox 360 slim and cleaned everything when i turn it on i got a problem with my vid being frozen and its just stuck on the xbox logo or when i start playing a game it just suddenly gets frozen again. Do you by chance know why?
i've taken everything apart and thermal paste it comes sometimes today i can't wait to play online mw3 mw2 and bo1 again super happy
It's always a cool thing to see a console in sore shape getting a good refurbishing 👍I've been hoping to do something similar for an original model GBA, though the only ones I've come across are in too good of a condition for it to be necessary. That, and it would leave me with a lot of spare parts I'd feel guilty about throwing away lol 😆
Haha same! I have so many spare parts laying around. I need to organize them 😅
Great guide! One suggestion that I'm sure you did, but didn't mention on the video, is to check for leaky or bulged caps.
How are you pulling that fan connector out? I feel like I'm going to break mine getting it off? It just feels so stuck in place
You don't actually need foam to completely surround the fan. Some revisions only use three rectangular pieces of foam (about 1/2 inch long) to dampen the vibration of the shroud.
Its like a brand new xbox 360! Only things I've taken apart is Xbox controllers. When i have time ill try this. My Xbox 360 is fine but i did get it second hand and i bet it would love some thermal paste. Thank you for this video! RUclips and people like you are amazingly helpful!
I bought an S model like this from ebay for $100 recently it to needs some tlc also however pluging in to my hdtv I quickly noticed ugly red lines all over the screen should i try to get my money back or would I be better off trying to replace or reflow the southbridge?
Im having trouble putting the fourth bracket on the x clamp back. Any help, please? It doesn't go all the way thru.
i have a 360 slim and its original HDD is running out of space - i assume it's just a regular 2.5" SATA HDD, is it ?
if i put a bigger drive in there, what would i need to do to keep my downloaded games, savefiles and all that stuff ?
im having a issue with my xbox 360 slim, it keeps saying open tray and sounds as if the disc isn’t spinning, any idea what would cause this? and how to fix?
Hey, just an FYI, there is a small hole behind the sticker near the power port. Sim card eject size hole. Makes it pop easily.
Thanks again for yet another great video!
We see a lot of the older generations get love in regards to mods. But what about this gen? Are there optical emulators, video output mods etc like we see for older consoles?
I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
I think because these console are very modern by todays standards we don’t see too many mods, but there are definitely some! I’m planning on doing videos on them hopefully in the near future. Stay tuned 😁
Yo! I'm pretty sure whoever donated this xbox got it from my eBay store in February. If so, great job! Just found your channel a week ago and love the Gamboy mods. Cheers!
Haha! Nice!
I have a similar interest in fixing things like you. have you ever done any video tutorials on fixing broken PS Vitas?
I haven’t made any vita videos yet, but it is definitely on my to do 👍
@@MachoNachoProductions Good to know. Thanks. I've Subscribed.
I have a slim Xbox 360 slim that had a smashed usb port on the front. It will not turn on. Is it possible to just remove the broken usbport to get it to turn on again?
Pro tip for the foam gasket around the disc drive. Just cut it where the 2 halves of the drive meet. I've seen them be so crusty and dusty that they won't stick back on properly.
That’s a great tip, thank you 👍
I'm having the original ps4 the one with the light bar on top, is there any way to replace the wifi antenna so it can pick a 5ghz network
Great video. Love to see any hardware open to give life back
Glad you enjoyed it!
Did this with my working xbox to replace the fan now it won't green light. Any idea why?
Great vid Tito, as always. I'd love to see one on a PS3 restore, and some tips on fixing YLoD and replacing those NEC Tokin capacitors. I can use some guidance saving my PS3 😉😉😉
I would definitely love to make a video about that. I’ll be in the lookout for a YLOD ps3 😁
Love the videos. One thing that I’ve been trying to find is a noctua fan mod for the Xbox 360 slim.
That would be great! So far the slim is pretty quite. But noctuas are always great!
this cleaned up really nice, well done!
Thanks JuicyJake 🙏
Your 360 refurbishment experience went much better than mine did; I had to clean roaches out of one!
Oh no! I hate roaches 😅
I watch all of your videos. You just make high quality movies.
Amazing resto and editing. You earned a new sub. Cant wait for new content
Thank you for the sub Daimien 🙏 glad you enjoyed the video!
Ironically my experience with console repair started with the original 360. After having my day one get the red rings I wanted to save money so I’d look up common issues then I’d look up how to fix. Most of the time it just needed all dust removed new capacitor then It’d work again. I also would inspect the power brick.
Hey Tito,
Really enjoying your videos.
Some great exclusives are Fable (Anniversary for 360), Fable 2, and Fable 3. Those 3 games have been some of my favorite games of all time and to this day am disappointed that they have mostly been forgotten about.
If you end up trying them too, I really hope you like them.
Thank you John! 🙏! I’ll definitely have to check them out! I’ve heard good things about fable
Hi Macho Nacho. I've been a follower on your channel for a while now. I love your tutorials and videos. Can you do the new RGH 3 mod on this console? I would love to see this.
I’m definitely planning on doing future mods to the 360 now that I have a working one 👍😁
One year later. How is the 303 holding up? And do you still use it on more recent projects? Great video. Had to come back as I just found one for $13 at a thrift shop. Time to see what crazy things can be done with it!
McMaster carr sells various types of foam tape for industrial use. If you need a very specific thickness, you might have some luck browsing their catalog!
I love this type of video from you, you always have a great presentation when doing your videos you go slow and explain everything. 360 we can mark as check, I'd say do everything you want to do, I personally like PS3 videos like this, but skies the limit if I had to suggest directly maybe N64 so there you go good luck and keep up the great work!
Thank you! I definitely want to do a ps3 video 👍
@@MachoNachoProductions I'll be waiting and watching 👀😎
wait...Shouldnt that round cooper spot touch some sort of procesing unit and not be fliped over facing fans downward air stream?
There’s a round copper surface on both sides of the heat sink
Always loved the look of the slim 360, simple and elegant
Agreed! It’s a very tastefully designed console. I also really like the beeps it makes when turning the console on and opening the dvd drive
my 360 console can't sync , I try sync button on both controller and console , it won't sync, also try cable to connect to controller it won't work. Can you show a video how to fix this?? Please.
Awesome work, congratulations! 👍 I'll recommend you to play panzer dragoon orta from the original Xbox through backward compatibility :) Recently I also recovered an Xbox 360 with the no power issue. I found later the laser is also bad and I'm still waiting for the replacement to arrive. Hope that brings my console back to reading disks again. Keep up the good work and thank you for the great content.
Awesome dude! Thank you. Best of luck on the repair 👍😁
great work. akai katana looks great on the 360, marvel vs capcoms runs good , raiden iv, deathsmiles, otomedius are nice shmups!
I have a 360 slim that just took a shit on me and started freezing while loading the Xbox emblem. Worked just find for 6 hours the day before, would you consider checking it out???
hello I'm a new viewer to your channel great video on how you restored 360 Slim. I have 360 first model keep up the great work that you're doing watch love your future videos soon
Thank you Roberto! So glad you’re enjoying the channel!
@@MachoNachoProductions you're very welcome I have a question, I own the 360 the first model I just recently bought the Kinect for my girlfriend unfortunately since the system doesn't have Wi-Fi the camera cannot be updated is it possible you can do a an episode a how to troubleshoot the Kinect camera for my 360. keep up the great work look forward to seeing more of your episodes
This legit took me all night to do but thanks man.
hello again I wanted to ask a question I own a 360 the first model but I also have the Kinect is it possible you can do a small episode about how to get Wi-Fi on go360 so that the Kinect to work having issues with my retro console to get the Kinect camera up and running
The 360 is pretty new to me and I have a lot to learn 😅 I’m sure I’ll be doing more episodes on it in the future 👍
Just so you're aware. There's a pin sized hole under the sticker below the warranty seal. Unlocks the tab much easier than trying to pry it with a spludger 👍.
Oh nice! I didn’t even notice that. Thanks for the tip!
I have one of those with error 81 or something like that i think its an apu issue, i opened it up and the board looks brand new, its strange to see apu issues in a xbox 360 slim but can happen
Hmm Interesting. The slim seems like a well designed console with a good cooling system. Would stink if the APU was fried 😔
Can wel all appreciate the moment this guy saved a console on wich we all started and played Call of Duty on. 🎉🎉❤
Lost Odyssey was another 360-exclusive JRPG that was absolutely fantastic, and features Nobuo Uematsu's work as well.
Wow, nice! A lot of people have been recommending it. I will definitely be picking it up ☺️👍
Great channel Tito, love it, really well made videos and easy to follow instructions 👍🏽
Thank you Woody! So glad you’re enjoying the videos and the channel 😁
this is the best disassembly video on the 360
That thermal paste is just in the middle how does that work
It's alive! Great job. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you Kill-9 🙏☺️
I scored a 360 working but in horrible shape at a garage sale for $10 and restored it. I put the fan, all plastic parts in the diswasher and they came our perfect. Except of course the front panel which has the touch sensitive switch in it.
Dude 3M do felt or foam anti rattle tape you should make any replacement foam gasket with that stuff and the foam version comes in different thicknesses and both have a selection of widths
Will definitely look into that, thanks for the tip 👍
this is nice for the purposes of the video and all but curious what would you do had it not worked? eat the cost and buy another for the disc drive and swap those parts? if so, what then with the 360 leftover, sell it? can you talk about that?
Since the system was working expect for the drive, I probably would have purchased a replacement optical drive. I was actually looking online while making the video incase I couldn’t repair it.
ok cool, now how do i fix open tray error on my recently purchased slim?
Those adhesive window foam seals should work as a fan gasket.
Great video and I hope we get to see a RGH3 mod done to it some day 😉
Perhaps 😉
Love your videos, keep them coming
I like to slice that disk foam gasket with a razor blade right on the seam so you don’t have to remove and reapply it when opening up the drive.
Nice cleaning guide, Tito :)
Ever thought of RGH modding an XBOX 360?? In case of future failure of its disc drive. They are all going to fail eventually :(
Great video. One bummer with those 3rd party hard drives is they don’t support backwards compatibility. I learned that the hard way. If you’re looking for great 360 games, I’d suggest Prince of Persia and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. Neither are available on new gen consoles and they’re really great.
Oh man that stinks. Is it not backwards compatible with older 360 models? Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll definitely have to look into them!
@@MachoNachoProductions Sorry, what I mean is that you can’t play original Xbox games on the 360 unless you are using an official Microsoft hard drive. I don’t understand why, and there’s probably an exploit to fix that, but it’s annoying.
@@ScottBaker38 it's as easy as connecting it to a computer, running FATXplorer, and rebuilding the compatibility partition.
why not RGH3 your xbox 360? you can use hacked BC files that can play more OG xbox games than official ones from microsoft. loading them from the HDD is also better and faster as well.
@@ScottBaker38 I never knew about that? Glad I purchased a brand new 360 hard drive made by Microsoft before Target got rid of their last little Xbox 360 stuff a few years ago!
Appreciate it I have a Xbox one s that I don’t even play and a ps4 but now I will be having the 360 issue fix so that someone else could enjoy 👍
Hey, can you take a look at my E, it red dotted recently, and lack the tools to open, and would love your inside knowledge on the internals.
