I think I clicked through a half a dozen or so before coming to your video, no profanity, no dirty basement setting and you clearly have the expertise of a professional. Really appreciate your videos, thanks!
Single Point slings were first developed during the Civil War for calvary. They needed a way to not lose their rifles if they ever dropped it while on horseback. We still see the remainant of these on the Winchester model 1873 lever action rifles with the Saddle Ring. Basically, you would never hit your junk with your rifle while on horseback, so it made sense at the time.

I hope you're blessed in your business, your explanations of "why" and "how" are supper useful because you don't assume the listeners know (unmentioned by others) details. Blessings!
It has been helpful as I’ve gained back my arms while rifle training. No longer one handed while repairing steels, stapling papers, or loading mags away from a table. An intelligent video with choices and preferences not a sales pitch. Thank you good sir.
5:54 in Poland we were taught to get the sling under your left arm and swiftly move the barrel with your left hand to tuck the whole rifle on your left ass cheek with the barrel pointed upwards, it's really fast and your right hand can do anything in that time like pulling out your sidearm, plus you can get your rifle back quickly by pulling on the barrel. It works really well on AK-shaped rifles, haven't tried it on an AR yet.
Thank you sir. Your rabbit trails are usually great info for those needing more granular details for those in-the-moment questions that we didn't realize that we needed to ask (for newbies like me).

been watching the channel for a month or so now, John, and just wanted to say it's really refreshing to see a temperate, sane, learned man of faith in firearms instruction who still has the knowledge and skills to back it up. it's been my experience that even the seemingly level-headed instructors occasionally post a video or two showing their crazy. In that regard, can you recommend any instructors in the Southeast that you identify with? I have no interest in training with the unwise, however skilled they may be.
Steven Peterson Also check out T-Rex Arms channel. I highly recommend. One of the best channels which incorporates great articulation, demonstration and camera work. Best of luck with your training.
Another one I'd check out is Sage Dynamics. A lot of really solid information there. These two, Trex Arms, and good 'ole daddy Garand are the four youtubers I learn the most from.
andrewjfaas Cavalry. Calvary, aka Golgotha is where Christ was crucified. And it's reins. Okay, my spelling OCD has now been satisfied. Every depiction of rifle-bearing horse Cav I've ever seen; they often had no slings, or just 2 point ones. In the Armored Cav, we just had those plain, black, cotton webbing, 2 pt ones.
WOW! Tripped over this dandy by happenstance. Even in the early days, John, you have always been at the tip of the spear for teaching and mentoring! Good video! Because of you, I've learned all about the Vickers Sling, and the assortment of attachment methods. Semper Fi
I have a90’s SKS from my grandfather with a sling. Leather straps from the cloth sling to the gun. It’s not as ergonomic as yours, but after this video and a couple hundred rounds, it’s actually really nice now I know how to use it.
You may not like doing gear videos, but you just made me realize how useful a sling can be. Always hated them. But now I see what I’ve been doing wrong! So keep them up. Every little thing can make a huge difference.
If you havent decided on a single point sling or a two point sling, the Magpul MS3 Single QD Gen2 sling is great. You can run it as a single point or two point so long as you have the qd attachments. The magpul ASAP qd attachment is also fantastic for single point allowing for ambidextrous movement. Run whatever way works best for what your planning on doing.
I'm a little late to the party here, but I'll say it anyway. At 0:48 you started into what I consider the 2 points' best advantage: it pulls the rifle to the side when it's dropped, getting it out of the way while transitioning to a side arm when your rifle won't fire (mis-feed, out of ammo, etc). 'Course, a lot of folks chest carry their pistols now, so it all comes down to what you use and how you like to carry it. Good stuff in all your vids.
Loved the video! Personal gear is definitely an 'evolutionary process'. Both my wife's AR and mine utilize 2-point slings for the very reasons you demonstrated.
I've always been a single-point sling guy myself, I guess because I've assumed that two-point meant your sling was secured like most conventional rifle slings, with a point of contact too far forward, of which I've never been a fan as this is intended more for over-the-shoulder carry and not so easily accessible. However, I just moved my picatinny rail sling point back, almost directly in front of the receiver, and that works quite well, so you've converted me. The only complaint I have now, however (which is minimal), is that while the forward position is now greatly stabilized, there is no "slop" in directing the weapon to my right an extra 15°, past center, the way I could with the single-point (although this would not really be intended for aimed fire anyway) Again, not a major deal-breaker, but you never know if you have enough time to swing your body in that direction.
This video is great because I have had a hell of a time figuring out what kind of slings to get and how to use and attach them. Ugh... seems simple, but no one talks about slings so there are definitely a lot of us who needed this video. ;)
Try this: Run your two point sling with the back point at the End Plate and the forward point on the hand guard, as close to the upper receiver as possible. You will get the best aspects of a single point with the security of not hitting your junk with a 2 point. With your support hand you simply push the barrel down towards your hip and move your strong had to your handgun in one smooth motion. Grip and draw your handgun while moving your support hand along your belt line and follow your natural muscle memory for a pistol draw from there. Simple, simple.
I always used a 2 point sling, no other option in my day. Now, my current go to is a SIG716 DMR, 18" heavy barrel, with 1x8 PA Platinum scope, Spuhr scope mount and Atlas bipod, it weighs about 16 lbs, too much for a 1 point sling, plus I like to use the sling to tighten up and steady the rifle. I consider this paramount to other considerations. Nice video, appreciate the benefit of your experience. Thanks.
Thanks a lot: as usual your videos are clear, simple and without junk-words inside. I hate 30min videos about à sling with discussion about Mars, politics, motors, holydays etc when all I need to see is a professional opinion about that…so thank you so much.
Why did you get the four versus the three? Just curious cause I’d like some of his points about the One point really not having any purpose ever. Granted the MS4QDM is only five dollars more expensive than the two mount, but if I’m never going to use the single mount, why have the extra straps
If you like the Magpul MS1 but like the pull tab idea, you can drill a 1/4 hole in the end of the slider where the lined knurling is and run a paracord cow hitch through it with what ever kind of pattern you like. I basically just made a 4 inch blood red (color distinction) zipper pull with a turks head. Might put a basic step weave on it for a little more material to grab, but it works really well and I like how smooth the MS1 is. I tried a Vickers but you have to wrench the thing to get it to slide. Don’t get me wrong though, it seems like a solid sling. But my Magpul modification works really nicely.
I run a minimalist carrier, 2 on my carrier, 4 on my belt, 1 in the gun. I've always trained with a single point, and never had the testicle tapping problem, maybe because it's just how I was trained. I was curious you hadn't mentioned anything about vehicle ops. Thats where the single point shines. That, and switching shoulders without having to swim out of the sling. I recently just tried out a 2 point at training, and it just feels too wonky for my taste. It's all personal preference I guess. Great vid though. Keep up the great work John. Love your videos and your insights.
I spent three years on MSG duty, and loved using the Vicker"s Sling, but I have a single-point on my own rig and love it as well. I can easily push it to hang under the arm. If you are "dropping the weapon" and hitting yourself in the balls then you are not maintaining positive control, and that's on you. But I agree with everything else.
I think you're ON TO SOMETHING there brother....that is, "YOUR TAKE" on WHY a "SINGLE-POINT SLING" setup was ever crafted or created from the get-go. It really makes "PERFECT SENSE" now in thinking about all the times, like YOU, I went from an existing "BASS-to-a-TENOR" sound-off when barking orders to my squad when out in the field. Nonetheless, this was an awesome video explanation of the PROS and CONS of all three setups. I like you, prefer the "2-POINT" setup, as well.....Do carry-On, brother!!!
Atlanta. International airport there. Lot of crime there. But not in his neighborhood. He's always out patrolling with the AR. At least that's what the criminals think.
I just got the Blue Force 2 point sling with the swivel QD for the Magpul stock and the M-Lok swivel for the barrel guard. It is so nice to have a real combat sling. I was just using a short piece of nylon strap that was pretty much useless. This thing is so easy to shorten or lengthen with just a pull on the little strap.
We started mounting the sling on the outside of the buttstock to keep from strangling ourselves when we go to the off side shoulder. Also keeps the sling from getting between the shooter and the weapon with the proper tension like you have.
I work in a place that has a sewing room that makes slings for our machines. It has CNC controlled sewing machines that have dozens of stitching programs loaded. I make my measurements, go through the trash bins to find long pieces of straps, and bribe the operator with a muffin in the morning to make make me a custom sling for all my long guns. Very handy.
You had my wife and I laughing at the “angry feminist” line! I’ve watched this video numerous times. Very informative as always and funny too! Thanks John.
I agree with everything you say. There is one thing I want to say, which is from what getting is that the single point is best for ergonomics cqb and breaching. Where as the two point is best for security hands on task and comfortablilty. I could be wrong but that's what I got. You're the best though
That silent dig on the magpul sling though “Larry vickers makes a good one, Viking tactical is a good one, Haley Strategic has a good one, magpul.... has one”
@@seminolekilla personally I like Magpul slings, but most reviews I’ve found on them are not positive. I’m not sure why. Maybe because the webbing is so thin and slick? I’d consider that a feature, but it definitely would not hold up as well as something thick like a Vickers.
As a 13F, I just used a small 550chord loop to attached my M4 to a carabiner that was attached to the far left Molle Webbing, it always stay down my left side (as a lefty shooter) so I could use both hands for my F.O. equipment. With all that said, now I need to use John’s 2point style sling cause that just makes sense. Thanks John.
yea but his reasoning is legit. I mean how many guys would be designing anything for rifles and intentionally make it so you smack your own nuts every time?
So glad to find this. When I was in we didn't have anything but the stock M-16 slings, even though there were plenty of better things in the NSN catalog. Then again we were pretty much REMFs anyway. I was my first units armorer and finally got the okay to order some new single point ones but by the time we actually received them I was transferring out. As it turns out I probably would have been better off just working out a better way to attach and use our existing ones. Then everybody could just adapt their rifles and slings in whatever unit they found themselves in later. When I was in PLDC (2003) we had a Ranger, just back from Afghanistan, that told us they just attached their M-4s to the shoulder of their vests (strong side) via a short length of para chord and a D-ring. This allowed them to disconnect it easily but also gave them hands free ability and it was very quick to draw up to your stock weld. We mimicked that, as best we could, in the field with our slings folded up and taped and attached to our shoulder pad on the LBV. We couldn't disconnect it though, so we were stuck keeping our vests on constantly but that's okay. We got a lot of strange looks from everyone else but nobody told us to take them off. Anyway, one thing that did as well was keep the rifle from fraternizing with our own privates ;) (IOW knocking your junk), as you pointed out as a downside of a single point approach. Now I wonder if that was a consideration when they adopted that method. Well, when I arrived at my new unit I wasn't in charge of shit and that was just fine, haha. So no more trying to convert everyone to a more tactical approach with gear. Maybe if I had stayed in longer, who knows.
I have to say I really love this channel, fantastic, easy to understand, funny and CLEAN! Man great stuff, I am new to this world and I am appreciative of you and your great videos, thank you!
My man that hair is on point!..You should be in a shampoo commercial with that doo. Through every movement and shoulder transition it didn't budge an inch like it was ready for the fight too...Just wanted to stop by and bust your chops a little and say thanks for showing me this rifle/ sling combo..I just picked up a DDM4V7 and have a blue force Vickers sling on the way..I remembered seeing this setup awhile back when you first posted this video and figured we had the same taste, and similar experience so I should give this rifle a try...100% satisfied with its performance, handling and balance.....Now only if I could get that warrior poet hairdoo lol, take care John
It's like snap-on hair, from a Lego set, or Mr. Potato Head. I'll bet he never even gets helmet hair, or beret hair. I have a theory that his hair will NOT budge out of discipline and respect for the bad-assery that he exudes. We're all just a bit envious John.

Glad it wasn't just me. I never understood the single-point sling. Just made the weapon into a bludgeoning tool that ruined my day when I was working. I use a two-point on my personal rifle now. Thanks for the video.

After all these years it just occurred to me...
Is John just playing around with his AR on the side of the road? God bless America.
looks like the carolinas or florida
It looks more like a driveway or backyard patio I think.
God bless the free state of Georgia.
It’s in front of the Seattle police station
It makes a lot of sense and peers have harassed me to make the change. I didn't like it, but give 2 thumbs up to those who do. Rock on bro.
Yep, I agree with everything he had to say except that I run my sling outside the buttstock.
Same. I like to have my stock inside the loop with me.
Finally a no nonscence Vickers sling out to video. I say thank. Wish I had this before my tactical class yesterday.
I would be interested in a video where you show us the loadout of your load bearing vest and how you manipulate your rifle/sling around your gear.
I agree with everything you say. There is one thing I want to say, which is from what getting is that the single point is best for ergonomics cqb and breaching. Where as the two point is best for security hands on task and comfortablilty. I could be wrong but that's what I got. You're the best though
Proctor sling is my all time favorite
Same.
I have a Proctor as well. So far, so good.
I almost bought a Haley sling on sale, but still couldn't justify the $.
readyme The Haley sling really isnt worth it. I, unfortunately, paid full price and am almost entirely unsatisfied.
David England haley strategic is a terrible company. Good products, terrible company
We got the vickers sling for grass week back in basic. Man what a wonderful device
That silent dig on the magpul sling though
“Larry vickers makes a good one, Viking tactical is a good one, Haley Strategic has a good one, magpul.... has one”
What’s wrong with Magpul?
@@seminolekilla personally I like Magpul slings, but most reviews I’ve found on them are not positive. I’m not sure why. Maybe because the webbing is so thin and slick? I’d consider that a feature, but it definitely would not hold up as well as something thick like a Vickers.
@@nicklaustietje2749 I like mine, but I’m not an operator like some lol. It’s smooth on my skin and keeps the rifle on my back for hunting haha
@@seminolekilla same! It meets my needs, but I’ve never ran it hard.
'Swim' out & 'married' to my gun.........love the power of the right word to make it stick in your memory! simple quick and efficient!
just got my WPS sling love it, best ive used over a decade of experience
I am now a new subscriber.
👍🖖
+Thomas Schoon welcome! 🤙
many thanks. I haven't used a sling since ETS from the Army. We've come a very long way since.
"may have been invented as a practical joke" 😂😂😂 you are awesome man!!
I think for new shooters that is the one thing they never think about is a sling and I'm glad to see somebody explain how important they are
Im a simple man I hear a feminist joke I press like
yea but his reasoning is legit. I mean how many guys would be designing anything for rifles and intentionally make it so you smack your own nuts every time?
I got my junk removed so no worries 🤣
I've got a Vickers on my AR and love it. So easy to use and adjust.
Getting smacked right in the thot detector by your thot vaccine deployment tool is quite humbling.
@@kitblue3194 scary.
You had me dying of laughter at "racking the testicles"
Team Wha HAHAHAHAHA! AAAA HAHAHAHA! He’s so articulate with it. 🤣
It retails as tactihair.
@@nytrydr_z 😂😂😂😂
John I gotta say I really enjoy your clips, they are definitely educational and also usually good for a laugh or two at the same time...
When it's laced around your head the rifle really maneuvers more like a one-point sling
PVC o-ring and a spade bit you can make a very nice cheap muzzle cap. Thanks Jon love the stuff and keep the Faith brother we all need to pray a little harder.
"angry feminists" "who hate men". well that's just saying the same thing twice.
great sling vid, thanks for the info.
I was going to throw a single point sling on my most recent build but now I will be going for a two point because of this video. Thanks for the info!
"It was created by an angry feminist.." That shit had me rolling! :D
Me Too.
Oh no bro thanks for showing them accessories!
Makes me want to connect a swivel mount for my rail & hook it up in the same spot on the left side of the picatinny rail also.
Thanks John bro for taking your time showing us! 👍
The 'junk' and the 'boys', 'developed as a practical joke, buy a bunch of feminists'! 👍😂
great humor with a good concise factual easy to understand set of instructions good 'vid'!
I use the 3 point on my HK and don't mind it at all, but I just started using a 2 point on an AR and love it, really makes a difference.
How do you like that DD M4A1? I have the same rifle and luv it but, wish it had a mid-lenght gas system.
Love it. An MLOK or KeyMod would be better, but I'm rolling with this one for now.
318mxclutchin what kind of gas system does it have? I'm assuming a carbine?
The DDM4 V5s is essentially that gun, but with a mid-length gas system.
Love the setup what barrel length and rail length is that? Also what is the butt stock you are running
Barrel should be 14.5" w/pinned flash hider. Stock is stock DD
Thank you.. For a novice, this is great information. You’re descriptive video has helped me decide which might work for me.
1:24 angry feminist be like: "I see your bra invention men and I raise you a single point sling!"
Ran a modified 3 point my last 2 tours and I loved it.
"HITTEN UR BOYS!" -John Lovell, January 12, 2017
Thank you for talking about the nut tap issue with single points honestly happens to me whenever I shoot my buddies rifle or the one time I used my hamr sling in single point mode.
What's the model of your that grip and buttstock?
+Christopher Chu it comes on this Daniel Defense M4 - bit.ly/2qAHMdK
+Christopher Chu or just this - DD Stock & Pistol grip - bit.ly/2qQtfqL
Thank you, I have not gotten into slings yet but i was looking into the single point slings until i watch this.
I was thinking "just sling it on your back" and a nano second later you say " or sling it on your back or something goofier". Too funny.
Glad it wasn't just me. I never understood the single-point sling. Just made the weapon into a bludgeoning tool that ruined my day when I was working. I use a two-point on my personal rifle now. Thanks for the video.
"Go martial arts on somebody if you have to" lol. Good vid John
This brother can talk and talk! Good video by the way. Like his rifle and it setting!
if your running a single point sling and its hitting you in thr balls then eithet your running it too low or you have some big balls.

Thank you for advices. Greetings from CROATIA 🇭🇷
One point sling was the “tacticool” thing for the unit I was with in Afghanistan.
I'm new to AR-15 schtuff and this video helped me a lot. Thank you, sir!
"angry feminist who hated men" Hilarious, thumbs up.
😂
Thanks brother. I was looking at slings today for my DDM4V7 and the Blue Force was the one I liked. I'll be getting it tomorrow
I don't want anything around my neck.... I go strapless
:-)
I'm Your Huckleberry Insert "that's what she said" joke, here...
Just got a Troy t-sling after watching another one of your sling videos, having some trouble with qd mounts but watching your vids has given me a much clearer picture on setting these type of things up, lovin the content man!
