This, 100%. I spent 8 years in the Army, but I've learned quite a few "new" tricks from this channel. Completely flipped how I sling my weapons, too... My two closest friends down south appreciate the increased retention.
This is great, answered quite a few of my uncertainties about best practices for attaching slings. Less "right and wrong" and more "here's what to think about and why". Good stuff fellow Warrior Poets, carry on!
The best advice is simple try a few things out, figure out what feels the most natural, comfortable & what works best. Then practice practice practice 🤔
I prefer my sling mounted like John at the end, I attach at the rear of the receiver and first mlok slot closest to receiver. 100% it bumps the knee when not wearing armor. Now, my hunting rifles are generally set like Paul's specifically for the wrapping of the sling as an extra contact point. Great video and great points all the way around. Thanks for the content!
So much has changed since my Army days. These modern combat slings were not invented yet. If I ever had to re-enlist they better drop me off at the Post museum to get fitted out. Last time I had a helmet on my head it was that old steel pot with a helmet liner.
AR platform user since 1984, LEO since 1987, and was firearms instructor for 16 years. Currently running the WPS sling on duty weapon and loving it. Will be on next build also.
Oh John, that was a shameless plug for the WPS sling(s). I have one of each, but I prefer the MagPul MS4. The MagPul sling is a little heavier and I like the slider for adjustment. I personally don't care for the bungy portion of your slings. The wrinkled portion of the sling can get caught on my kit. As to where to connect the sling on the rifle, I always connect the rear QD like you do on the right side of the stock. As for the forward connection a lot of that depends on the gun. My guns run from a braced 9" Sig MCX Spear LT , which is the gun I used when I took Rifle 1-3, to a 24" AR Precision Rifle. It is pretty obvious that these guns and all the guns in between need to be slung differently for how they will be carried and used. Before I close, I really want to put a shout out for WPS Rifle 1, 2, and 3 courses. I took them in Garrettsville, OH. It was great training. Paul was the lead instructor. Rifle 1 goes over the basics including how to properly setup your sling. Rifle 2 & 3 are how to move and shoot, use barricades, etc. The courses are physically demanding. Something I really appreciated were the instructors never asked us do something in training that they didn't fully demonstrate first. This is truly advanced training. Paul and his crew were some of the best instructors I have ever seen.
You had a new customer at Fudd Factor. Thanks guys. My best friend Max turned me on to you guys and taught me how to train with my rifle from one of your classes.
I'm a big fan of the Warrior Poet Sling. Way back in 87s while in the Army I improvised a similar sling. I used the issue M16A2 sling looped and duct taped to the back of the M16A2 stock and connected with a bungie cord to the front sight post. I did this mostly because I hated carrying the rifle at port arms for hours at a time during long marches. But it fulfilled most of the same Warrior Poet Sling functionality. (This wasn't my idea BTW - other soldiers did it before me. John doesn't have to worry about a frivolous patent claim.) The crucial differences are the Warrior Poet Sling has the elastic at the rear and is much more easy to attach/detach and adjust. Well, that and it has good build quality. It doesn't look like something bodged together by a junior enlisted soldier out of random stuff and duct tape.
Attaching to the back of the receiver gives you much more manouverabilitie and the sling doesnt have to "slide" across your back to have that manouverability to do reloads and clearances in your "workspace" !
You guys are cracking me up! This video is perfect for me since I've been experimenting with sling position. I don't have body armor and have gravitated to what Paul has set up. But, like Paul said, i need to now spend a bunch of time working through and repeating the mode transitions. Thanks guys!!
Excellent points all around, guys. I have multiple options on my rifles, I love that about QD sling attachments. I can run what's going to work best in a given scenario, and if a situation arises, I'm aware in advance of any compromises that may come from each possible configuration. My typical bedside gun setup is rear of the receiver and receiver end of the handguard, loosey goosey, easy to get in and out of with room to manipulate, but that's a very specific condition. Also, thanks for reminding me to practice my manipulations and transitions!
Paul is right about the foreard sling mount position for all the reasons stated plus is is easier to swim in and out of. I'm not completely convinced the rear outside mounting point is the way to go but I'm willing to try it again.
Thanks for the sling tips, not all of us are battle hardened. Thanks for the great sling, it came a few weeks ago for my 1st AR. It did allow me to take a range day even though I’m still waiting on a brace to arrive.
Thank you for the sling tips. I bought the sling from your site after watching this video. I hunted with an AR for the first time last week. The sling worked out perfectly for me and I have venison in the freezer as a bonus.
Thanks for explaining why on all the options. Makes it so much easier to evaluate sling setup for myself. This is the most useful sling setup video I have seen.
Thank you for that instruction. I’ve never used this approach in training for trigger control. I love it. I’ve used it a few days now and I’m getting better.
I ran a 1-point/2-point custom sling setup in Afghanistan that was sick, and still what I use today. enabled seamless ambidextrous shooting, and could be front, side or back sung equally well (patrol, chow line, carrying stuff...), and I even could run it with a dual slung shotgun with neither sling (rifle and shotgun) interfering with one another. And worked great for vehicles too as the sling came on/off the rifle in an instant. In the 2-point configuration, it worked very similar to what is shown here (John's setup), but it was a little different. But worked just as well (was even better for an ambidextrous transition than what is shown here). 4:50 my sling setup worked just as well with body armor, in both the 1-point and 2-point configs.
No Shade at you John Because I love you man and I listen to your book on Audible at least once a month but you don't have the chest and arms that Paul has so its probably easier for you to stow your rifle lol. In all honesty I love your videos and you guys have gotten me through some rough times. Thank you
I love the back and forth, getting two perspectives. Lets talk plate carriers...I can see that John is wearing the RAC plate carrier, but what kind of plate carrier is Paul wearing? I don't see it on the site.
I am glad to see this content coming back. I saw this video and finally pulled the trigger on a WPS sling. Mine did not come with a quick tab like in the video and I would like to know why. That’s what finally got me to order it.

If I run a front sling swivel far out I find it gets in the way of my hand. Closer in my hand is free to be anywhere on the rail without being imeaded by the sling.
My only point of contention is the rear mointing point... This is great if you're exclusively using a 2 point configuration, but is a no go for folding stocks/braces and those who swap between single and dual point configuration. I absolutely love that you properly sling the weapon beneath the non-firing arm, however! I'm always blown away when people sling it beneath their firing arm. Just got my first AR and trying to figure out a sling solition, since i will be going to an outdoor complex a lot and generally want to get used to using one. That bungee section looks like a game changer enough to have me to right to the website and order one. Will be experimenting with different mounting points to see what feels right. Thanks homies 🤙

Awesome content, Thank you very much!!! Recently went shooting with my AR for the first time not at a range with a bench and sandbags and found my ability to use the sling completely horrible. I agree with Paul. Run the front Qd mount farther down the hand guard . You can brace it with your arm in the front similar to a classic hasty sling. Paul is correct
John hit the nail on the head! Sliding is a problem with the bungie system; your neck feels raw after a few repetitions. Yes, it can be mitigated with thicker collared shirt, but having to get change clothes so you can dry fire is an unnecessary training impediment; go with the near -reciever attachment point.
Great ideas and points well taken. I like my ARs, AKs and HKs, so the slings all mount differently so I just need to get used to each platform. Thanks for the vid!
As a civilian and 57 years old and a little tummy. Not Gravy Seal but deff Dad Bod I like the point in the rear under reviver/buffer attachment when running kit. I don’t run armor as a civilian due to my age and physical condition. Instead of that much weight in armor I’m taking mags. Lots of them. My thoughts are as a civilian and I’m kitted up things have gone very wrong and there will be no logistics bringing me supplies. So my kits is double stacked on the chest and I need the clearance to keep muzzle straight down as possible when in a group setting. Good video though and I’d love to try your sling.
Moral of the video: just because you see alot of people running a sling one way, try a couple different ways and find out what you prefer. The butt stock should always be away from the shooter but play with different positions for the front of the sling. If you utilize QD attachments, make sure you clean them with non chlorinated brake cleaner and then a couple drops of lube. I've seen them get rusty and get stuck, or they just drop loose. It's a moving part so keep it clean. I use brake cleaner bc oil traps dust and dirt, brake cleaner cleans all that crap out of there but you need to lube it immediately after it dries
When i was in the army i favored the single point sling from the buttstock, keeps from fumbling with the tension on your barrel from the sling and easy enough to keep out of the way down your side or across your back (i was field artillery so we usually swung our m4s out of the way durring fire missons)
Thanks for this video, it's given me something to think about and try. I'm sporting DMR rifle with a bit more length, and have struggled with getting the right setup for me.
I found when running around in classes the rear mounting is better on rear end plate. It's comfy on the right side of the stock yes, but it tends to fall off your shoulder when your pumping your arms. Front is good near the barrel nut, YMMV
Thank You gentleman. Love the 'tec talk' Great points by both. I run mine out towards the muzzle. That is how I was instructed, and it just "feels right" to this day. Take care
Amateur user, but I mount to the receiver end-plate and near along the handguard as my predominant use is hunting/stalking in winter and I find that such a setup allows me more maneuverability - I can sling the the stock higher behind me to keep the barrel higher as I cross over obstacles and then rotate it back in front with ease, also makes it easy to adjust length-of-pull for different situations or different users.
Far forward is the way to go as demonstrated. Also using the sling as added tension for stability. But instead of using the QD on the butt stock I hardpoint the rear sling with about a 5" loop on the end where the stock hits my body. I can transition shoulders without choking myself out. Keeping it close to my body by my neck doesn't matter and is irritating like hell.
Another factor to consider for the forward mounting point is if a man has real shoulders, delts, and arms he needs a broader circle to get around him. Whereas if they are more toothpick size then attaching at the closer mid point would work well.
I like my sling at the rear of the receiver so I can take my stock over my shoulder to clear a threshold or a corner without getting the sling caught on my back or armor or chestrig depending on context. I will run my forward attachment all the way forward right behind my light which I feel allows me the most control and the ability to use sling tension to stabilize. The only con I will say to running at the rear of the receiver is running the charging handle for reloads and malfunction clearances which for me was a small thing I had to train around mainly through dry practice.
This is why I use the McLean sling. Single point is better for shooting, 2 point is better for admin and when your not shooting. It combines the 2 and is really easy to keep on the gun without getting in the way or having to attach a bunch or rubber bands.
Got slings for my tools a few years back and I had no clue! I had maybe 1 or 2- then realized how would I work and carry my tools at same time? Got dual point but now I’m going to revisit my setups to get prepared
We’re all happy this content is returning.

John and Battle Gnome!!!! Today is a good day!!
John and Paul content is the best
I really like the 75% hard and fast must do, and 25% art. I can see the advantages of both setups, and its fun watching them pick on each other!

I agree with Mr. battle gnome, that is exactly how I run my slings. Good content, God bless you WPS.
This is an amazing video for all skill levels, very in depth. Thank you
