@@matthewbeasley7765 Odd that you mention that. I saw a guy in the '80s make a pair of Ruger 10/22 rifles into a sort of Gatling gun, minus the rotating barrels. So it really wasn't a Gatling, just in the spirit of the rate of fire, lol. Later in the '90s I machined a few mounts and a some of the guys I worked with lent our 10/22s to the project for a 6 rifle array in the shape of a sunflower with a cam firing trigger actuator that was made from of all things, old bevel geared egg beaters, lol. Driven with a 7.2V Makita drill, the cyclic rate was insane and could empty 180 rds. in just under 30 seconds. Barring a jam that is. Accuracy was not of importance to us, we were just mucking about as my British friend put it. But after that we stacked a few of our Mini-14s together and used a chain driven cam system that was reminiscent of the 10/22 cam firing mechanism I saw way back when and it was definitely something to be feared. This was hand cranked and could empty 80 rds. as fast as you could move your wrist. And we used an old barn for target practice to see what target pattern we could follow. It was impressive to say the least as to how many rounds met the intended targets. Either setup could hold off any number of ne'er-do-wells with ease, lol!! Cheers.

As a Marine I fired the old M-16-A1. The internal functions have not changed since the rifle was first introduced way back around the time I was born (almost 65 years ago). When you've got something that works, you keep it. It's also nice to have these videos available to show people who don't know anything about guns that an AR-15 doesn't fire anything at a higher velocity just because it looks different than other rifles. It's the AMMO that determines velocity, not the gun.
Barrel length can affect velocity. 26 inch barrel to a 16 inch barrel can drop velocity 200 to 300 FPS in the .223/5.56 depending on the ammo. Dead on that looks don't affect velocity.
@@sgdadfgdfgadbdfbd nope. The combination of barrel length, barrel tightness, number of turns in the rifleing, bullet weight, mass and type of powder are determinating the velocity. A longer barrel can increase or decrease the bullets velocity, depending on the other factors. More spin helps to stabilize the flight path, but the more turns the rifleing has, the more it brakes the bullet while traveling through the barrel. Rifleing can't add energy, it consumpts it while using it to rotate the bullet.

It's like watching one of those educational videos from the Army made in the 30's and 40's crossed with a How It's Made style narration. It also continues to amaze me how such tiny pieces of metal control the rather violent movements of a gun. Little flat pieces of metal with even smaller cuts and notches control the combustion engine that is a firearm to a rather exact degree. Machines that seem so complicated from the outside but this animation makes the simplicity of their function quite apparent and I love it. Thank you very much for making this!
Yup, all the precision fitting of parts, and even more impressive the dynamic balance of forces, vibration and harmonics all have to be right for it to work reliably. Then throw in having to account for different pressure and weights of cartridges. All in the details.
There’s no moving parts in a suppressor lol. It’s the same thing as a muffler. The hot gasses are just cooled and slowed by baffles and it takes out that supersonic crack
I dont think anyone said a suppressor had any moving parts.. What I meant and I should have clarified to avoid responses like this is how do the mechanics of a suppressor work. Mechanics does not mean there are moving parts either. It means “ the details of the way something works or is done.” I know how a suppressor works but seeing a video explanation like this would be awesome to watch and would be cool for people who do not understand how a suppressor works. Thats all.
I guess for people who have a low IQ or were dropped on their head, a simple explanation like that is all you can understand and I should have taken people like you into account. Sorry for my lack of insight into your deteriorated mental capacity. Seeing a video explanation would show the movement of the gasses through the firearm and through the baffles of the suppressor showing When a trigger is pulled and the striker ignites a primer and sends a bullet down the firearm barrel, it’s trailed by hot and expanding gases from the combustion of the primer and powder. Suppressors collect, cool, and reroute those expanding gases. Seeing the movement of the gasses and effects of the suppressor would be cool to see and would be nice for people who actually have a brain to watch. Maybe SpongeBob square pants is more down your alley? Sorry for over estimating your mental capabilities. I wont make the same mistake twice. =)

It’s also important to point out that the AR-15 (semi auto) is NOT an assault rifle… because it does not possess the ability to selectively go from semi auto to full auto, as the M-16 variant can.
@@nigel900 it is not an M16, however it does look like one. This causes trouble from both sides of firearm opinion. For the gun abolitionist or escalating control, the 15 is frightening primarily because it looks like military infantry rifles they have seen in movie...and their complete education on the equipment is watching Rambo, Apocalypse Now or Die Hard. They get a visceral response of an exaggeration of an M16 movie prop and believe the difference gun owners discuss is just esoteric. For those crack brain psychopaths that want to hunt people in various gun free zones before getting suicide by cop...they want to instill blind fear and overwhelming panic. So they often select what looks like what terrifies the gun averse population. Of course there are very effective, semiautomatic wooden stock rifles that are just as deadly as this....but they don't often elicit as much fear.
The brain child of Eugene Stoner. His first major rifle of this general pattern was for Armelite company, in .308. the AR10. ( the AR is Armelite Rifle, not some other scary 'automatic' thing the Demoncrats made up ) Later, he joined Knight's and they produced another .308 known as the SR25. It always surprises me just how much of this mechanism you can "feel" when you fire the gun. I especially love shooting my AK because of how mechanical the recoil impulse feels. It's hard to explain what it's like without having shot these firearms for yourself. It's a very satisfying feeling made even better by landing the shot on target. And despite how violent and fast these mechanical movements are being made everything just works as intended and is perfectly safe for the user. Videos like these however don't get across just how loud firearms can be for those who've never heard or fired one. Movies, games, etc don't do it justice. You can easily hear someone shooting 5.56 for miles. My friend works at a gas station in town about 1.5 miles away and he messages me every time I go out and take a couple shots with a handgun asking if it was me shooting. I live surrounded by trees and hills but gunshots don't care whatsoever. At the end of the day you're essentially setting off explosives in a controlled manner. It's way louder than many think.
Which is why my friends, is that it’s always necessary to either use subsonic ammunition or sound canceling headphones whilst firing the bigger stuff so you don’t harm your hearing. A suppressor works, just have a threaded barrel so it does work. Of course, don’t be afraid of noise if you are in a panic situation which could potentially get you harmed.
This is an awesome resource for those who are interested in rifles but don’t have access to them. If you can get one and want one, I would highly recommend putting one together yourself! It gives you the upmost intimate knowledge of your rifle and the only critical parts are torquing the barrel nut. Everything else can be done fairly simply.

There is really is not much of point to add electronics to a firearm (unless used for optics which are rarely used inside the military) as when making a firearm reliability is important that is why you don't see the army using many things that need batteries for infantrymen, as a battery can only last so long.
from the way you animate the moving part to how you explained each mechanism of the gun is immaculately easy to watch and learn from while still being mesmerizing and elegant, this is a level of quality i expect from a large education organisation yet i can watch this for free! not even large media conglomerate could do anything educational nearly as good as this! all types of learners, visual, audio and text (through the provided subtitle that thankfully wasn't the automatically generated ones by youtube) could absolutely understood how an AR works in one sitting! back then you either had to read the manual and roughly figure out how it worked and what are the roles of each parts, screws and springs and where they go. now? you can just watch a free video on the internet and in 8 and a half minutes you'll get it! you don't even need a rewatch! you'll just get it immediately, how awesome is that?

Dead on that looks don't affect velocity.
barrel length also impacts velocity
edit. removed last part, i remebered wrong
Velocity depends on both - Bullet and rifle
@@sgdadfgdfgadbdfbd nope. The combination of barrel length, barrel tightness, number of turns in the rifleing, bullet weight, mass and type of powder are determinating the velocity. A longer barrel can increase or decrease the bullets velocity, depending on the other factors. More spin helps to stabilize the flight path, but the more turns the rifleing has, the more it brakes the bullet while traveling through the barrel. Rifleing can't add energy, it consumpts it while using it to rotate the bullet.

( SR for Stoner Rifle)
After the AR10, a smaller scaled down version was developed in Nato 556, with a .22 cal projectile. These small frame rifles became immensely popular for sporting use as well. The AR15 concept has appeared with several name prefixes denoting military or law enforcement applications with features not available on consumer sporting rifles.

It's way louder than many think.
ruclips.net/video/OJhdbJV2FWs/видео.html
Which is why my friends, is that it’s always necessary to either use subsonic ammunition or sound canceling headphones whilst firing the bigger stuff so you don’t harm your hearing. A suppressor works, just have a threaded barrel so it does work. Of course, don’t be afraid of noise if you are in a panic situation which could potentially get you harmed.

It gives you the upmost intimate knowledge of your rifle and the only critical parts are torquing the barrel nut. Everything else can be done fairly simply.
It’s all so complicated, yet when’re you go piece by piece, it’s all very simple mechanics
Many things, that are broken down, part by part... becomes easier to learn how something operates.

I’m an Army veteran, and I absolutely LOVED the full auto weapon system while serving. I currently own the civilian version as it’s just a fun weapon to fire, and to teach my girls what our soldiers, marines, naval spec ops, and combat airmen are using. Thank you for this awesome animation. I’m also going to use this as a teaching tool for them.
dont spec op guys use an hk?

I just finished my first AR15 5.56/.223 build and I'm looking to start another in 300 blk. This is super helpful in learning more about the hows and whys of assembly as I go and even how I can better care for the parts of my rifle. Its helpful to know where the contact parts are and what i should be looking for during maintenance and cleaning.
Finally, a video that clearly and concisely explains how every piece of the AR-15 functions. Amazing content
He even explained the extendable stock and the scope rail. Its great
As a 30+ year retired Automotive CAD Designer kudos on this modeling! 🥳
I have a couple programs running at my home office but this gives me a new direction! 😎
Thanks so much man, I really appreciate that! Haha yes, finally someone who understands the amount of modeling that goes into these!
@@mattrittman I know! 🤣
I still have Catia and ICEMsurf and that's enough to keep me busy. 😎
File size gets crazy sometimes but it all works.
@@Harley.Davidson Yeah that's great you're still doing some stuff though!
@@mattrittman Any chance you can do one for other platforms? I personally have a Stribog Gen2 PCC with a "direct blowback" system. I know it's similar to more popular/familiar makers with the same kind of system like the Scorpion/B&T/MP5 etc but it would really be cool to see how the internals of those function.
This is your coolest animation yet! The music, the narration, the detailed breakdowns of each assembly and how they all work is mind blowing! Can't believe the video is only eight minutes long! Could you please do one for the M1 Garand? Or the 1911! Heck, the list of guns I'd love two see covered in your vids is waaaay too long lol! Appreciate the time and effort put into this!
Dude thank you so much Jonah! That really means a lot man. I’m working on a revolver next, but the 1911 and M1 are both on my list to do eventually :)
He did it! (the 1911)
Your explanation is excellent, along with diagrams. Answered questions that I had. The moving diagrams really clear things up very easy to understand and see how the are functions🎉🎉
The AR15 is a piece of art.
The AR15 will always be a beautiful piece of engineering art. No one can convince me otherwise.
Hk G11
The details on the models are on another level.
The edges have lost paint and you can see bare metal.
Agreed. When I was watching the locking splines for the first time I noticed the chipped surfaces. Surface textures are top shelf on this one.
Just picked up my first AR-15 today. I've been studying the videos online and spoke with the people at the store about it but this presentation really drilled home many of the concepts I wanted to understand, and I learned a bunch more. Thanks for this quality work!
Matt is back with another masterpiece!
The guy who first figured out how to get all the components to interact properly definitely had some skill.
That would be the legendary Eugene Stoner who came up with this design among others. You’re correct, he certainly had some skill.
Genius is the word
This is beyond perfect. I watched a few videos that also had animations, and some that showed the actual parts in motion on a rifle, but this is a beautiful, comprehensive animation that shows everything. This would answer any of the questions I had about how they work. The 3 round burst in particular was something I could never understand until I saw it animated.
Thank you so much for the nice comment!
Glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful 🙂
Weapons are like wrist watches mechanisms but they work in a stressful and explosive environment on the inside. It’s almost perfect design is meant to work as hard and with no failures as possible making it so impressive
So much of mechanics go it a gun/rifle and you never seize to amaze me how detailed your explanation is. Can you show your research process behind this? Do you consult guides/experts or you straight up dismantle a weapon for this? Its alright if you are no comfortable discussing the details. Either way I am just genuinely impressed and curious! 👏
Thanks so much man! I actually wrote a blog post about it when I did an animation on a Kar98k:

Matt Rittman is the gold standard for gun animations. Please keep on posting more videos.
I admire the animation as much as I admire the engineering. Modern life just wouldn't be what it is without people who can do this stuff.
Finally, it’s out, it does not disappoint 😊
I served a year at the Greek Spacial Forces military and we had M4s. I know some of this stuff but this video was soo educational and soo well animated and I think everybody that uses this gun (or others on other videos) should see this video

In the army, we learned more about how weapons work and breaking them down for cleaning and putting them all back together. The bolt itself has very small parts you don't want to lose so when cleaning make sure you lay all the pieces out on a handkerchief or thin towel.
Oh yeah? What did you serve them? Lamb?
Lots of trolls here, but seriously man: thank you for your service. No matter what country you served for, you selflessly stepped up! Props to you, my man! ;)
It's really cool that the engineers were able to design this without incorporating any electronics.
people did wonders without electronics for at least 5500 years
@@ogladaczr.t.3168 well over a million
There is really is not much of point to add electronics to a firearm (unless used for optics which are rarely used inside the military) as when making a firearm reliability is important that is why you don't see the army using many things that need batteries for infantrymen, as a battery can only last so long.
@keonyang3332 the game has changed! There are very reliable optics now days that the U.S Military use! Perfect example is the ACOG
Most of the credit goes to Eugene Stoner
from the way you animate the moving part to how you explained each mechanism of the gun is immaculately easy to watch and learn from while still being mesmerizing and elegant, this is a level of quality i expect from a large education organisation yet i can watch this for free! not even large media conglomerate could do anything educational nearly as good as this!
all types of learners, visual, audio and text (through the provided subtitle that thankfully wasn't the automatically generated ones by youtube) could absolutely understood how an AR works in one sitting! back then you either had to read the manual and roughly figure out how it worked and what are the roles of each parts, screws and springs and where they go. now? you can just watch a free video on the internet and in 8 and a half minutes you'll get it! you don't even need a rewatch! you'll just get it immediately, how awesome is that?
Thank you so much :)

awesome! been using m16/ m203 for 12 years during my time in military, finally understood clearly how it works.. the animation are really good.
This was absolutely perfect. Just bought my first AR. This made a lot of things very clear
The genius is always in the details. Crazy what the human brain can do to achieve something that it really wants to happen whether it is creating a weapon or this majestic animation.
Beautiful Freedom Stick.
Outstanding, I cannot imagine the work that went into making this.
I love the narrators personality. So addictive.
The engineering needed for the burst fire mode is particularly impressive
This is probably the best gun animation I've ever seen in my life. Perfectly explaining everything at the same time. Marvelous work!
Bro your work is INCREDIBLE! As the daughter of a graphics designer I can only imagine how much work is put into to something this deatailed.
If you're up for the challenge I would love to see you do an animation on the Kel-Tec Sub 2000.
Thank you so much Sydney, that really means a lot 🙌🏼. Here’s a short breakdown: www.mattrittman.com/how-an-ar15-works/
Unfortunately I’m not sure how many more animations I’ll be doing 😞. It’s becoming increasingly more difficult to make this a full-time gig as RUclips changes its algorithm. The time invested is becoming less and less profitable. Probably more so because of the fact it takes me so long, but I digress.
machinery like this should be considered art
