There's more story to this. The figure standing over Kirk's grave site is Spock. The woman getting the mind meld, in the room with the 'x-rays of Kirk's body and standing atop the structure with the ovalish opening (like the one in V'ger in ST: TMP) is Yeoman J.M. Colt from The Cage (The Menagerie) who time travelled and revealed her serial number to be 765874 in a Marvel Comic when they were licensed to do Star Trek content. The man standing behind Saavik is Sorak, her son by Spock due to the pon far incident in ST:TSFS. There are more clips of Colt and Spock (as he would have appeared at the time of Kirk's death and around the TMP era) on the OTOY site. It's not de-aging as we have seen it before - Witwer is in prosthetic make-up to make him look like Shatner - aided with whatever technology they're using. He has been able to look at the images in real time and adjust his expressions and movements to mimic Shatner.
Near death experiencers often describe scenes like this where you are guided by family and friends of the past into the spiritual realm. Here you feel intense love and joy until everyone you see becomes an intense shining light.
You are absolutely. People do describe having very similar experiences when a near death experience occurs. However, I wonder if it’s more than that. Is it Spock having a near death experience before he passes or something else entirely. That’s what is quite interesting about this story, there is room for thought and interpretation of what the filmmaker/s were trying to convey.
@@supermillennialbrothers I am open to any interruptation but I think Spock had just passed and hasn't awakened into the afterlife yet. That's why when Kirk takes his hand he looks confused until he recognizes his old friend and raises his right eyebrow a bit in aknowledgement.
It is a subtle attempt to "unify" the fandom by including elements from JJ Trek, Picard, and Discovery as the backdrop for Kirk and Spock's last bittersweet meeting. They're still trying to salvage the last 15 years. I considered this manipulation for days before coming to the conclusion of "No thank you." I wept in the car after seeing Generations. Did not feel one nose tickle or shed one tear over this, well done as it was.
One of the things that OTOY is seeking to do is to unify all of Star Trek: the TV, movies, comics and books. In one of the comics Lt. Colt was given a vision of the future, and to help her deal with it, Spock mind melded with her, and in the process saw Kirk's death among many other things. The thinking about this that I like best is that where ever Gary Mitchell is, that he was able to sue his power to take the part of Kirk that still resided in the time ribbon Nexus and send it to meet the gray alien Yor (the Vulcan woman Kirk sees is Saavik, and in one of the novels she and Spock had a son, which is the Vulcan behind her). Yor was from Discovery and is the only known character to have traveled from the Kelvin universe to the prime universe, and after he gives Kirk his badge he sends Kirk to the Kelvin universe. After a vision in a sort of world-between-worlds, Kirk arrives on New Vulcan just as Spock is about to die and Kirk holds his hand as they both go to their rest together.
Man, I didn’t know this! Thank you for enlightening us with this information, because I think they are moving in the right direction for sure. This was a beautiful, thoughtful and touching piece that I think every Trek fan should see
You should check out the interview with the OTOY production team for Unification they had some interesting details on what actually happened in this short. You are close in your description. They describe how how Kirk was 'resurrected' and the part Yeoman Colt played and how Gary Mitchell orchestrated the whole event.
Also they pointed out some major easter eggs in the gathering at the fountain. Agent Kovich was among crowd greeting Kirk . They displayed a magnified view of Kovich standing there. Also many of the people were descendants of various crew members of the ships known as Enterprise.
@@supermillennialbrothersmy guess is because they want people to visit the Roddenberry Archives website and see everything else they have put there. It makes no sense to me either why you'd want this unlisted. Might be a specific thing since this was made with Paramount's involvement in some capacity.
In just a short few years, CGI will improve to the point that you will not be able to tell the difference from a real actor. It means that we will be able to bring back actors from the past that have been long gone to history.
True. You can still see some differences here however, they are small at the most. We’ve seen what they could do in The Mandalorian with Luke Skywalker. I can’t wait to see what they can do with Star Trek!
@ The technology is not 100% just yet. In 10 years, Hollywood could electronically recreate a long-passed actor in a full budgeted film and you will not be able to tell that the actor wasn’t real.
@@jroar123 That will be neat!!!! We could all direct our own in VR and have our own Oscars: Uscars!!!!!!! We can finally flush Their useless propaganda. 😈
You are absolutely right about that. The whole “Kelvin timeline” has been an unmitigated, retconning nightmare. Resetting back to the “prime” or real timeline is the only path forward in my opinion. There isn’t a future for this alternate universe and the lack of any interest from either fans and the audience abroad shows this!
Oh yes….. this is right. Iam 42 yr old. Star trek fan from Germany since i was 8 years old. I love Ds9. But as child i saw all what comes in tv from star trek every time. Discovery season 5 is the only think what i canceled. I can not, no more power for this. The 3 new movies are not realy star trek. But its good sci fi
It left me with a couple of questions. Did all of this take place in Gary Mitchell's mind? Why did Spock mind meld with Lt. Colt and what did she actually do because of it?
There has been a few short Treks with this alien in it leading up to this but still many questions, Wot tells me there more to come the fact Kirk body is in Star fleet black site right next to genesis machine
None of the Star Treks are as good as the Original. They are Robotic, Cerebral and Not "Human." They make their characters more like Spock than Kirk. They needed heart not more techno.
Agreed! I think Rodanerry had an issue with the original series not being exactly as he wanted it to be. The first Trek movie was totally his vision and he become bitter after it and wanted TNG to have no conflicts between the characters, which is a hard thing to do and makes for sometimes robotic behavior and dialogue

@supermillennialbrothers I saw it on you tube a couple of days. My guess would be to search for Sam Witwer OTOY.
FYI YT channel the burnettwork has done an excellent decode named "how otoy and the roddenberry archive are saving star trek.."
It's unlisted, so you can't search for it on yt. But there are links to it everywhere.
