Since Parmount + seems to be switching to Trek movies directly to stream, I would love if they gave OTOY and the Rodenberry Foundation a shot at a 2 hour film.
This is got to be the most Trekian thing I ever seen! Nothing is said but so much yet is so! And themes were there! The scene that showed the bushes and the stream was an awesome callback to time travel sequence from ST:The voyage Home, great Job to those who made it.
Hi Robert, great show and great news about Star trek archives. I was dumbfounded at the recent short, the care and detail was fantastic I feel my Star Trek still lives.
That was great Rob. For me STD had choked all interest and hope I had for Trek to continue. Seeing the Otoy shorts put into the perspective of canon is exciting as it shows that there are many great Trek stories still to tell. The only stumbling block is the incompetent people that have been repeatedly allowed to produce the drivel we've been seeing. Hopefully someone cares enough to start making money again and put Trek back in the hands of talented people. Your video gives me reason to hope Rob, Thank you.
I'm glad you have focused so much on this in the last couple of weeks. I'm as taken as you by how well done this is. This is the Star Trek I want, and how they've tapped into the deep lore is incredible.
I agree. Unfortunately, there was so much backlash towards TMP that we'll probably never get a mature sci-fi story like that in Star Trek again. I could be wrong, but it's unlikely. For better, or for worse, Star Trek II paved the way for future Trek.
With this technology they should be allowed to make the Star Trek movies that did not get made prior to the motion picture. Planet of the Titans would be a masterpiece made now.
Hi Robert, my name is Carlos. I was involved directing on all these 765874 films. Just watched now this video you posted last year on 'Regeneration' and made my day to watch it, especially coming from another filmmaker. So thank you.
Major Wood for General Enjoyment! (I'll see myself out...) On a more mature note, the work OTOY have created feels just like that: mature. On the same level that TMP felt, I now come to realize.
I don't know if you mention it, im halfway through. Dave Cullen mentioned that they are considering or working on remaking the animated series in "live action" to make it align with TOS. I think that would be amazing to see.
Rob, ty for highlighting the great analysis by Stephan Duignan and tying the treads of these shorts together. It does seem to be a huge project to take on and I hope they can bring it to fruition. Also, would breed with Yeoman Colt (ala The Cage), a cutie to be sure. ;D I didn't realize that Roddenberry himself wrote the novelization for TMP. Just seeing Alan Dean Foster's name anywhere on a project, I assumed he wrote the adapation. Sounds interesting. The only criticism about Otoy's Spock is that his neck is too short for Nimoy. Phenomenal work with Spock's face. From what I understand they applied "Spock/Nimoy" prosthetics to an actor's face, it seems a little ghoulish to me. I supposed maybe because with digital works, the actor isn't putting anything on. For some reason I get a Michael Myers/Kirk mask -feeling from the application. But it works for Mission Impossible, so who am I to say? Otoy is doing a much better job with Star Trek's legacy than anything Abrams/Kurtzman has put out since 2009.
Good day Robert, thank you for showcasing the excellent connectives. There is some scary good orchestration here of such deep thought, one may wonder how right now it is humanly possible to conceive this level of imagination & intellect. It is genius level work that is otherworldly. It is really great to be at this point in time where this has happened and is happening and just absorb the implications. It's a time machine for us imaginatively and in our own personal memories how we the audience are being engaged quite profoundly. Your enthusiasm & energy is rightly placed and refreshing to see. Great post! Warm regards from the Cape of Good Hope peninsula South Africa.
Thanks for explaining those films. I watched them and didn't understand what was going on. I thought I knew a lot about Star Trek, but man, this is some Deep inside stuff.
The otoy footage is stunning. It .akes me really want to see a full on movie in this style. I have been out of star trek for so long but Picard season 3 reignited my love for trek. I need to find some good videos that can catch me up. I have forgotten so much.
There is so much room in the Star Trek universe for writing new stories and developing new characters. The only reason I can think of for them to “ reimagine “ the original series characters is because they lack imagination.
I am a few years older than you Robert. I was 19 years old and remember reading the novel ST-TMP after the movie was released in Australia in 1979 but it was released with Alan Dean Foster as the author. I must buy a copy of Gene's version. The Memory Wall episodes are stunningly visual food for all Trekkies.
I also bought the novelization just as the movie came out and remember it as being authored by Foster. I’m going to have to dig around to find Roddenberry’s version.😊
A Star Trek film with the motifs and themes of ARRIVAL is something I've wanted ever since ARRIVAL was released. Hell, a Denis Villeneuve Star Trek film could be incredible. Something impactful, atmospheric, emotional, and universal.
There's a shuttlecraft from the original series that was restored and is in a museum somewhere. I believe it was used in DS9 episode. I hope they have a scan of it on file.
I hope that folks in charge share your enthusiasm for this. I would love to see a surreal Star Trek project like this for the theater. The musical in Strange New Worlds among other things have pretty much killed it for me.
I was unaware of the previous OTOY work until I found out about the most recent short, “Unification”. I agree, the Roddenberry Archive work has been amazing. I would have preferred they ignore recent Star Drek like “Discovery” and “Lower Decks” but I appreciate how they’ve made it all fit. Their short films are clearly a labor of love but I hadn’t really appreciated how deep they went into various lore until seeing this vidcast. Thanks for bringing it all up - I just ordered copies of the Early Voyages comics (I stopped reading Star Trek comics shortly after Marvel got the license because I hated their stories and their take).
Thanks for posting this, Rob. I am saddened that jar jar abrams has his name associated with it. He doesn't deserve it. I'm really hoping that kurtzman is turned away at the door. I kept putting off looking into OTOY, but that changes NOW.
Great video. It has me thinking, what if Spock, along with the crash of the Enterprise also saw his own death? Remember the crash happens after his "death" so what he may be seeing "but not realize" is what McCoy saw and what Spock experienced via the Katka meld. This would also tie in with Strange New Worlds and his conversations with Captain Pike about HIS premonitions of death. Could it be that when Spock paused in the scene from Wrath of Khan right before he went to the turbolift to save the ship, he was thinking, "As fortold, this is my time."?
That’s a great thought. It also backs up what Robert is saying. By making content that ties a wider IP together you give added meaning to moments in previous content that not even the filmmakers at the time intended. The contrast with Star Wars is marked. They dumped the EU as soon as they could, but have now backtracked to introduce Thrawn because they are out of ideas!
Ok….that is amazing. My identification rating of Semi-normie, with level 2 Nerd, just went up to level 3 nerd. Glad I started collecting and visiting comic stores again. Even with Picard season 3 and Otoy, it’s pretty dismal out there…. Never getting rid of my blue ray player. Thanks RMB.
The videos are amazing, feel like real Trek again. The big difference between what Discovery did with the Guardian and what OTOY is doing is that OTOY is adding to canon, Discovery doesn't. That applies to every in the Kurtzman era, they are not trying to add to and enhance canon, they look for old ideas and abandoned ideas that they can use for their own needs and then claim it was from canon even though it totally goes against canon. OTOY isn't doing that, nothing in these videos ruins or damages canon in any way , it actuality kind of adds to it because it helps explain the difference in Spock between TMP and Wrath of Khan as he understands what is to come and that he has a role to play in it, he accepts his destiny. You can't say that abour any of the stuff from Discovery, Picard or SNW, none of their references to prior events add to canon, it just weakens that prior event. Like you said, this is what happens when peopl3 who care sre involved.
Thanks Rob, such a great breakdown. I forgot about Colt, another Ginger forgotten, yet saved by the Roddenberrys' A movie about her and this story, I would go see!
Alex Ross renders IP to 'indelible standard,' whatever he touches. ILM has a potential competitor in future creations of the lore, cinematically. Print polymers are likely to grace the desks of the domestic geek, capable in 3D acquisition, with modeled favourites. Packaging waste should be reduced, so get your carbon credits where they're available.🇨🇦 Can't wait to watch you print something Trek soon(ian) than later. Unboxing transformed.
Robert do you think that thay could or would link V'ger with the Enterprise-D AI Entity from “Emergence”? That AI/She would sound like Majel Barrett Roddenberry. Also in trek cannon, was it Una/Number One, that provided the voice profile for the Enterprise-D/Starfleet computers? (Joke don't tell Picard, about Lwaxana Troi becoming an AI. lol)
Thank you Robert for this great breakdown. I was hoping you were going to weigh in on this project. I’ve heard conflicting reports on how they rendered Spock. Some say it’s deep fake on an actor and some say it’s physical appliances worn by an actor. My guess is it’s both. Do you have insight on this?
When you love, respect and honour the existing lore magic happens. When you don't you get an ST:D. JarJar, Bad Reboot and co will never understand this.
I do agree it has the elegance and maturity to trek that we haven't got for a modern trek film it's how i want a new trek film to be made like. But we won't get this look for a trek show as it will cost to much to make and will take to much time. Yes it does look better than strange new worlds and looks better than picard and discovery even the new trek films because like we said we haven't got that elegance and maturity to trek yet and even looks better than the original trek films lol
"I want the ship to go....now!" NuSpock whose apparently developmentally challenged. People wonder about resurrectling actors like Nimoy and someday Shatner but if they are done with love and the families approve, its a damn sight better than Kurtzman is shitting out.😮😮😮
These recreations are great, but what's made Star Trek special is that fans keep it alive -- there are any number of fan stories, ship recreations, props, games and too many other homages which keep Star Trek alive. A centralized, corporatized repository can be good, but the fans have and will keep Star Trek going.
Not gonna lie, hearing JJ involved with OTOY gave me pause. I am well aware they're moving when it comes to their rendering engines. We need to push for live rendering though. The cloud is nice, but you're still using rendering farms in the end which means it still takes time. Brigade is not the only engine out there that is doing life rendering though. Epic has been pretty much doing this for a while with Unreal Engine and they are pushing the development of live rendering by using another Raytracing methodology called Lumen. They have Raytracing and Path Tracer, but the latter often requires denoiser. Lumen does not. I am also wondering how their use of actors is essential to this. I'd hope it would be, capturing their expressions and such to render on a mesh much like Hellblade 2 I haven't tried Brigade yet, but I've tried Oktane plugging for UE. It's still very slow... Would love to give Brigade a try though. Anyways, I can nerd about this stuff for ages lol
Seeing the innovations in AI is super cool for me right now. I'm currently doing a fan fiction audio drama with "the real voices" of the original series generated with AI. The first part of which is available on my You Tube channel for those interested in TOS content. Being a fanfiction author for many years I never thought I'd get to hear the actors actually read my stuff. And it's breathtaking how well it captures Shatner and Nimoy. It's really bought what I wrote to life and I am very excited to write and then produce more AI driven content. It's so empowering to the fans and I can't wait to see what people do with all this tech.
Your point about everyone wanting to put their own stamp on something instead of honoring the source material is why many franchises meet their end. You mention the Rings of Power and rightly so. You can count so many others too. What happened to the Witcher. The last 3 Star Wars movies (I know, risky mentioning in a Star Trek conversation) ST Discovery I can't bring myself to using the letters only. In the book the Fountainhead, the whole idea of others, dead set on putting their mark on something truly unique leads to the destruction of the public housing construction site. Others that don't understand or appreciate something special, somehow believing that they can make that something better by smearing their mark on it, in reality, make it less special by changing it to something else.
Thank you Rob being an actual fan who loves Star Trek and not just willingly accepting everything they're doing at Paramount especially with Discovery. That's not Star Trek to me. This stuff is. Still need to finish Picard and I'll admit I'm somewhat liking certain aspects of Strange New Worlds despite having a few grievances but none as much as I have with Discovery except for Saru. He's the only character there that feels like Star Trek.
I think you really hit the nail on the head with the moment about the ‘maturity’ that OTOYs short clips bring back. And really, when you think about it, everything Abrams’/kurtsman related (Star Trek 09 onwards) has been immature juvenile hormonal stupidity. Along with heavy doses of woke liberal ideology. It’s mind numbing really....And that’s why I hate modern Trek.... Sucks cause I woulda rather seen Anson Mount in a series produced by OTOY as Pike. With the vibes their shorts are putting off, that would have been downright epic. Oh well, that ship has sailed...
The 'Cloud'. A misleading term for Remote Servers and Terminal Access. What a tragedy that most people don't understand the trap this model is. Taking control AWAY from the User and putting in all in the hands of the Corpos. We are being taken back to the 1970's, but with prettier graphics. This time will be worse though, as we are so used to and dependent on, these Shiny Beads. As I've said for decades, convienence will be our undoing.
SNW breaks too much canon for me to watch. It would have been easy enough to give a character a new name, since they are actually a totally different character.
Canon is lovely. And as an OG (9/8/66) Trek fan, I appreciate it when I see or hear it. But I also know that Trek should not feel completely confined by it. The reality is that most new Trek fans don't go back to watch TOS. It's a product of it's time, budget constraints and other issues that leave it feeling slow and cheesy. (But it will always be my favorite.) And, like it or not, the same will happen to TNG, DS9 and VOY down the road. So, I applaud both avenues here, the work that OTOY and the Roddenberry Archives is doing, plus the things SNW, LDS and PRO are bringing us now.
I just want things made following the rules Roddenberry put on making the show fully as he was overridden at times. In short of Mankind actually matured no longer immature like now. Writers disliked this as lots of traditional plots not possible and many writers want their fiction to mirror modern times to make a statement against them.
Maybe this is unethical of me. But I dream that we will one day have more Original Series adventures with the likenesses and voices of the entire original cast of TOS recreated with AI. Which great writers can use to make new and interesting stories.
Na, if that kind of things happen, what keeps the originals special? If we can make 100s of new seasons indistinguishable from the originals. Imagine having another hundred Star Wars films with the original cast, the original trilogy isn't special anymore, just part of a never ending library. Things are special because they die/end.
The short they did of Spock was mind-blowing!
Which one? Virtually all the shorts feature Spock in one way or another.
We know the one, we’re intelligent and respectful thinkers.
It also honors Laurel Goodwin who played Yeoman Colt and was the last surviving performer from the original pilot.
Since Parmount + seems to be switching to Trek movies directly to stream, I would love if they gave OTOY and the Rodenberry Foundation a shot at a 2 hour film.
No way. I want to see a whole season of 10 episodes each over one hour long.
Are they filming a Star Trek movie for Paramount+?
Start the petition!
unfortunately no, no actors or screenwriter or production team
@@ZulcanPrime wouldn't we all TOS only
Yeah, if they would make Star Trek movies like that! That would be amazing!
You hit the nail on the head. Maturity. Sorely missing in the new Kid-Trek, as I call it. This has a solemn dignity about it that is very alluring.
Solemn dignity. Man, you NAILED it.
The legacy of CLASSIC/CANON Trek must be carried on (certainly not forgotten). Kudos to this awesome endeavour!
just dont preserve STD
@@purefoldnz3070 STD, what a deliciously appropriate acronym for that dumpster fire.

@bonghunezhou5051 , correct, Discovery and Strange New Worlds are set in an alternative universe.

Sounds very interesting, will check it out !
Give us the Shatnerverse movies. Pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaase! 🤲🏻
The downside of web based tech is someone can more easily take it away from you.
I still don't understand how they made Spock ...
What does OTOY stand for?
Thank you Rob being an actual fan who loves Star Trek and not just willingly accepting everything they're doing at Paramount especially with Discovery. That's not Star Trek to me. This stuff is. Still need to finish Picard and I'll admit I'm somewhat liking certain aspects of Strange New Worlds despite having a few grievances but none as much as I have with Discovery except for Saru. He's the only character there that feels like Star Trek.
It's all about passion for an IP. Sadly lacking today.
Whenever I hear NFT, I just check out.
It would have been easy enough to give a character a new name, since they are actually a totally different character.
ahh.. what the new star wars could have been....
blue milk and a garbage failed hotel hits kinda different..
Spock is shot pratically, it's silicon prosthetics on an actor. It's not digital 🤷♂ ...everyone thinks it's digital though 🤨
Its both, they talked about it in an interview.
Yeah, that's great. Are they going to try and erase Shatner's Kirk the way Paramount is doing?
Sadly, the Archive is still down for portal upgrades.
Rob has wood... middle aged wood.... lol
I have TEEN AGED WOOD. Even now.
Big trek fan but I really don’t get how the short film was all they great. Good deep fake and no talking.
I love everything but those damn NFTs.
Maybe this is unethical of me. But I dream that we will one day have more Original Series adventures with the likenesses and voices of the entire original cast of TOS recreated with AI. Which great writers can use to make new and interesting stories.
I would not mind as long as the people or estates of the actors portrayed are properly compensated for their likenesses.
Na, if that kind of things happen, what keeps the originals special? If we can make 100s of new seasons indistinguishable from the originals. Imagine having another hundred Star Wars films with the original cast, the original trilogy isn't special anymore, just part of a never ending library.
Things are special because they die/end.
Maybe they can speak to Vic Mignogna and recreate the Star Trek Continues episodes using the TOS actor's likenesses...
@@FVD Not a good idea. Besides, Vic is too controversial for Studios to associate with him.
So basically a real life Holo deck???
