If I could, I would love to go back to the 80's and relive it all! Such fond memories :) And Minty is right about todays movie quality; i feel today studios pour out junk because they (financially) can, back then it took a lot of convincing studios first..just for look for example how long it took to greenlight 1989 Batman in Minty's video on that screen gem.
@@mysticwolf007 id give almost anything to go back to 70s or 80s, just , minus the smoking. i never did get used to or like being around the smoking. but most other aspects of the past, i miss so much.
everyone is always gonna remember their generation's stuff as being the best. I bet 40 years from now, Alphas are gonna be like "remember Skibidi Toilet?" "yeah, that was the best! it was based, not cringe at all. . .not like the crap kids are listening to these days. . ."
I was stationed in San Diego in 1984 serving on USS Cape Cod AD 43. Sailed to Bremerton Naval Shipyard in Washington, stayed for a month. Then sailed to Alameda Naval Air Station for another month. In October, the ship sailed to Pearl Harbor HI for 2 weeks.
I don't remember my birth day in late January or anything after for a couple years. I imagine I cried and napped a lot with many a soiled cloth diaper for my parents to changeb😆😅🤣😂🤣
I can’t listen to “Do You Hear What I Hear?” at Christmas without thinking of Gremlins and laughing. THAT is how you use a soundtrack for a comedy/horror film!
I agree, it honestly sends shivers up my spine when I hear it. 😅 (I was a little kid the first time I saw Gremlins, had nightmares for weeks but I adored Gizmo. 💖)
It became my favorite Christmastime song because of Gremlins, and my 3rd grade class even sung it at the school concert. Only years later did I learn that it was written as a response to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
I know, right? Especially the Johnny Mathis version from the album Give Me Your Love For Christmas, which was featured in the movie. My parents had the said album and I heard the song many times before I even saw Gremlins for the first time. Then when I first watched it and heard the song featured, I was like “Hey, we have that album!” Ever since I made the aforementioned discovery, I always thought of Gremlins when we would play the record during Christmas time.
Growing up in Eastern Germany, I couldn't watch all those movies back in the 80s because this kind of movies weren't screened. After the wall came down I was finally able to watch everything from Star Wars to Ghostbusters and I was hooked. For me the 80s were happened beginning of the 90s. We bought a VHS player right after the wall came down. Amazing times
This is a fascinating story. I was born in the 90s but I love your content and many 80s films including both Gremlins and Ghostbusters! I love the cereal box covers!
In late July 1984, when I was 6 years old, my Mom took me to our nearest mall to spend the entire day watching movies. We saw The Never-Ending Story, Ghostbusters, The Karate Kid, and Gremlins.
I can remember going to see "Ghostbusters" in 1984 in Dublin, Ireland We were all 12/ 13 years old. A summer full of fun, first kisses and my first bike. And almost uniquely for rainy Ireland, the sun shone every day that summer.
I was 12 and saw both in the theater. I can tell you both were a blast. The audience laughed their asses off at Ghostbusters and were utterly charmed by Gizmo and the funny evil gremlins. The studio refused to let anyone see what Gizmo or the gremlins looked like till release day so curiosity and anticipation were very high. We weren't disappointed.
Now there's a sequel idea Ghostbusters vs Gremlins... Keep up the good work, Minty. It's always nice to take these little strolls through memory lane and see that others out there have love for the stuff that's been a big part of my own childhood.
We got both films in December 1984 here in the UK. I'll always remember the day my dad died, I went for a walk into town, dwelling on where my life would go, when I noticed newly placed posters of both Ghostbusters and Gremlins were coming soon to VHS that December. So that trivial bit of news cheered me up for rest of a hard day, as I loved both films
Great decade for film, indeed! Both of these were amazing. Buckaroo Banzai, is a personal favorite, as well! This era in film, is certainly unique. There are some great movies these days, but it's very different era.
The irony of the Bank manager lecturing Billy about being late getting his head bashed with a clock by the Gremlins was gold, too bad the deleted it. Also Ghostbusters was more about the characters fighting Ghosts and their personalities , Gremlins was all about following monsters wrecking looney tunes style havoc. Which is probably why the critics weren't so keen on the latter.
I love how they show the clueless critics 40 years later on an old video trashing classics like Fast Times at Ridgemont or Weekend at Bernies. Movie critics are the biggest clowns in media
Temple of Doom also came out in 1984 May 23, also the Terminator premiered on Oct. 26 1984 and Transformers animated series premiered on Sept. 17 1984.
Ghostbusters was the first movie I saw in a theater. With my dad, who was not a movie person at all. He took me as a surprise and we both had the best time, father and son. He ended up enjoying the movie and it created a strong positive memory for the both of us. "Ok, ok ... 1 ... 2 ... 3... GET HER!!"
I remember being 6 years old and my parents taking us to see Ghostbusters in theaters. The librarian scared the crap outta me of course but the scene with Akroyd's belt coming undone made me think 🤔 what's going on here?! 😂
Saw Ghostbusters at the theater with my mom, dad & sister in 1984... I had just turned 7... I loved it even though I had nightmares about ghosts for about a year.. haha.. actually the taxi driver ghost was one of the ghosts appearing in my dreams.
It's funny because the first time I saw the music video For Ghosbusters with Ray Parker Jr, never having seen the movie, I thought the shots of Zuul were Gremlins. I remember Gremlins being pushed to kids like there was no tomorrow. There were a commercial every 5 minutes on saturday morning cartoons, so I kind of understand the backlash
I wish I could remember which one I saw first. Part of me says Ghostbusters but that may be just because I like it more and have seen it so many times. It makes me mad I can't actually remember the experience of seeing so many movies for the first time!
Oh man, I was there 40 years ago (I was 15) and I did not remember that those films came out on the same day (let alone the same year)! Another great run down of a pair of fun classic films, great job Minty!
What happened to those days. Ghostbusters and Gremlins. Are both good movies. They are a part of my childhood. Still a big part of my life. What is wrong with the world today. Thank you Minty.
Part of me says the issue is corporations running movie studios. But part of me genuinely wonders if a certain group of people of a certain age (or generation, if you will) are just not that creative or motivated. Their music, design, fashion, art, and even lack of interesting subcultures have all been pretty disappointing as well. Yes, they'll blame absolutely everyone else, like no one else ever had difficulties except them. On brand. But I like to think we're ripe for a newer, younger group to revive movies/tv in another decade.
I think I saw Ghostbusters on the first day. I remember my brother and I got let into the theater before the previous screening was over, and the first thing we saw was Slimer flying at the screen in the last scene. So when it appeared in the hotel scene later, I already knew he was gonna escape. I also saw Gremlins in the theater, but I didn't realize it came out the same day! I missed Gremlins 2 in the movies, but I rented the VHS and loved it. I bought it after and watched it at least 20 times.
I remember when this came out of the movie theater. I was four years old and wanted to see this movie. I loved it. I even wanted that little remote patrol car that he drove and I just kept asking questions on how did they do that in the movie. What I liked is everybody in a family liked it even though it was kind of scary but it was still fun to the watch.
Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! vid man. Two of my all time favorites that I remember watching, for the first time, that summer. Little did we know Back to the Future and Goonies were not far up ahead. A perfect year later. It was a magical movie time. I still love going back there to the 80's best. You got a standing ovation from me for this one. 👏👏👏
I remember it well - I was a young kid at the time and I went to the multi-screen cinema, watched Ghostbusters and then went straight into the next screen to watch Gremlins - truly an awesome day! 80's movies totally rule :)
Ghostbusters is my favorite movie of all time! I was born in 1983, (as I'm writing this tomorrow is my birthday!! 6/15/83 baby! Absolutely love all things Ghostbusters. My favorite movie growing up, my favorite cartoon growing up... Gremlins is awesome too!
Very good video! Thank you! As for the GB, if you just fast forward through the "more than awkward" Bill Murray hitting on Dana scenes, Ghost Busters still holds up! John Belushi would have made it perfect! And Gremlins was so inventive back then!
I had toys from both franchises. My favourite Ghostbusters was the proton-pack and trap. My favourite Gremlins was a spike plush that it could fold out and zip up to be either the little fluffy one or the horror creature one. I bet some of you remember that ?
I remember seeing Gremlins in the theater, I'd just turned 5. Gremlins is among my earliest memories of life. I don't remember when I first saw Ghostbusters, probably whenever it hit cable. I can never remember now how long we waited back then between theater to home video to cable releases.
Summer '84, family trip in new '84 Plymouth Voyager, the OG minivan. Southern Oregon, Grants Pass we went to a drive in theater, and saw Ghostbusters and Gremlins back to back double feature. Top thing to do for us was the Movies, and the 80's were packed with great ones. I remember going to see Empire Strikes Back in 1980. I was probably 4.5 years old, and vividly remember being in the line, wrapping around the building for the largest theater in Portland. I don't have many memories going back that far, but that's one of the earliest. Eastgate Theater had 1300 seats in the main room, and a 500 seat second screen. It was the place to see movies. Our family went to Raiders there opening weekend when I was 6. ET opening day there, Jedi, Temple of Doom, on and on. Dad even took us to SpaceBalls opening weekend, because he's a Mel Brooks fan. Sadly, that theater closed, as multi plex theaters were built nearby with many more screens. Seeing a film with 1300 other people was amazing. Last few times I've been to the movies, it's a 250 seat room with maybe 40 people in it. Not the same.
I didn't get to see ghostbusters in the theatre but I did see gremlins while my older brother and mom went to go see purple rain. I was 10 getting ready to turn 11 in July.
I remember when Gremlins came out. My mom dropped me and my cousin at the movie theater and she got a ticket for parking on the curb even after the manager of the theater told the cop that she was dropping us off. I don't remember what happened after that, I not even 10 years old.
I was nine when these classic movies came. They were both in cinemas around Christmas of 1984; didn't get to see Gremlins until later because it was 15 rated but I remember being in a queue outside the Odeon on the Kingsway with my parents to see Ghostbusters. The room was packed and it was fantastic.
Great videi Minty. I was 9 years old when both Ghostbusters & Gremlins hit the big screen and was l8ving on Burke Road Balwyn here in Melbourne at the time and my mother dropped myself and my twi brother off at the cinema with my big older protective brother and sister to go see bith films. It was an incredible time to be alive and especially that age and with a mother who let us see scary naughty fun films. Only thos who were a kid or teen then will know how amazing it was. Thank you Minty😊
I found out from a Chinese friend that Mogwai in Mandarin means small monster. He didn't mean to tell me that specifically, I actually asked him how to say small monster in Chinese and that's what he told me😊
Because media companies want people to slowly start accepting poor quality films/music. They eventually want everything to be AI generated, to reduce costs, and hope that by flooding the market with crap the general population won’t tell the difference.
A little more context to the Ray Parker Jr vs Huey Lewis Ghostbuster theme fact. The studio WANTED Huey Lewis to do the soundtrack for Ghostbusters, but he was touring and then he committed to doing the music for Back to the Future, so he declined. The studio still wanted the Huey Lewis sound for their movie, so they asked Ray Parker Jr and he obliged by making the Ghostbuster song we all know and love sound just like a Huey Lewis song. Well, they got what they wanted...and the case was settled out of court, with Huey being compensated!
Well I wasn't old enough to see either one of those at the theaters seeing how I was about to turn one year old because today is my birthday. But I do remember the first movie I ever remember seeing at the theater was Honey I shrunk the kids but I remember that just as plain as day
I was born 2 months later in 1984! I have found I love both of these movies but, Ghostbusters I love quite a bit more. I am crazy about the science of the lay lines, etc behind it and I still crush hard on Harold Remis aka Egon Spangler. I love his grandkids, especiall the grand daughter and her friend, Podcast in Afterlife! I am still waiting to see Frozen Empire.
Yeah, the love for filmaking that existed on the 80s films really has to come back one day. Let's just have fun making them like they used to. Also, I didn't realized that this 2 classics were released the same day, that would defintely would have been an amazing excuse for a double feature, even if I admit I love seeing Gremlins as a more appropiate Christmas film and Ghostbusters as a fun summer release.
I really like this video style. They don't all need to be "10 things you didn't know..." This is great. Plus you covered Weird Al, and it doesn't get better than that!
14:58 Lolz, my parents thought that ninja turtles, power rangers, and Batman were too violent for kids.... But Gremlins 1 & 2, were my favorite films next to Disney's Aladdin, and home alone, growing up as a kid...
🎥Minty, albeit Back To The Future and The Goonies weren't released on the same day however "The Goonies" go underground on the exact same day- October 26, 1985- that Marty McFly travels back in time to 1955 in "Back To The Future".🏴☠🚗💥⛵
E.T. and Poltergeist was the summer of Spielberg in 1982 since those classics were released just weeks apart. But Ghostbusters and Gremlins on the same day is crazy. I'm so lucky to have grown up I the 1980's😊👍
In my humble opinion no decade was better for movies or music than the 80s. It was just hands down the best
I agree
cartoons and toys too
REAL. I’m from Gen Z and even I admit that you guys had the best stuff in general
That's just what it is, your opinion. Trust me, there are those out there who will disagree with you.
What a year 1984 was for movies and what a time to be a kid.
It really was the best!!
All that the NES, the Gamboy, Sega...it was a wonderful time.
If I could, I would love to go back to the 80's and relive it all! Such fond memories :)

Phoebe Cates was gorgeous in Gremlins !
You need to see her in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

😂 Kudos for NES Ghostbusters music 🎵.
Fun fact: at about 20:28 the town square was used in Back to the Future. You can see the building that would be the clock tower on the right.
YEAH..I SEE IT . TNX..☝️👌😉
That back lot town square is still used constantly. It's been in endless tv shows and movies.
Ghostbusters and Gremlins are both brilliant 40 years later. 😀👍
It will still be 100 years later
@@lutfimakarim8258 that is right. 😀👍
they dont have a woke progressive agenda ....so yeah
I know! The special effects in both movies still look good today!
1984 was one of the best years for movies. Besides these two classics,we had the karate kid, terminator, police academy, revenge of the nerds, etc.
Yes! It was a fantastic year!
Don't forget Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Nice use of the NES Ghostbusters game soundtrack at the end!
I remember going to see Ghostbusters, leaving the theater and walking right across the hall to watch Gremlins on another screen.
Almost 40 years since I sat outside one pleasant night at my local drive-in and watched Ghostbusters..yep, feeling old now..
ET was the most perfect movie to watch outside
In late July 1984, when I was 6 years old, my Mom took me to our nearest mall to spend the entire day watching movies. We saw The Never-Ending Story, Ghostbusters, The Karate Kid, and Gremlins.
Happy 😃 40th Anniversary to 👻 Ghostbusters ™️ and Gremlins ™️!
Great 👍 flicks of the ‘80s!
That’s right kids back in the day you could pay to see Ghostbusters and stay in the theater and then sneak into gremlins. It was the best.¥
Saw them for the first time as a double feature at a drive in theater. Doesn't get much better than that.
I was born in 1979 so this stuff is so special to me. Growing up in the 80’s & 90’s was a one in a lifetime opportunity 🙏🏾👊❤️
Good times... I was 10 and remember not being able to find tickets to buy and go watch Ghostbusters. I think both films stood the test of time well.

Ghostbusters still rules the world.
Didn’t like Gremlins at all

Childhood staples, and I'm so glad to have seen them on VHS during my formative years in the 80s.

Both are good movies and both are in the category that when there on I watch from where ever they are in there run. They never get old.
I remember seeing Gremlins in the theater before Ghostbusters. I had a Snuggles backpack that I carried a stuffed Gizmo in it. Both movies are great.

Both classic films. Very lucky to have two classic films that has influenced fans imagination and filmmakers.
Both brilliant films 1984 > commercially they were a big hit
June 8th, 1984. Not July. Thank you for covering Ghostbusters as it's my all-time favorite movie that's kept me entertained for decades.
I wondered about that; maybe these movies didn't make it to Australia til July..?
Oh man, I was there 40 years ago (I was 15) and I did not remember that those films came out on the same day (let alone the same year)! Another great run down of a pair of fun classic films, great job Minty!
Your Pad Looks Like "Pee Wee's Playhouse"! I Love It
Was 17 when it came out and actually worked at a movie theater the best years!!!
Ghostbusters NES music at the end...it triggered trauma on me.

There were people in 1984 saying the exact same thing about that era and comparing it to forty years prior, 1944.

Gremlins is awesome too!
Ghostbusters was one of the first movies I saw in theatres. Classic.
I remember going to the theater to see both movies, love both ! I miss the 80s!!
Makes me think of *Critters.*
The lesser of the two small-evil-animals-movies, yet very good too,.. ☺️
I love your outro Minty- I was born in 1982 and I feel absolutely everything you just said.
These Both Movies Were Great and Fun 80's Movies!! Yup Cinema Is Definitely Not The Same Anymore. Great Job Mr. MINTY!
I’m fortunate that I was a child whom experienced the golden area of movies 👍
Very good video! Thank you! As for the GB, if you just fast forward through the "more than awkward" Bill Murray hitting on Dana scenes, Ghost Busters still holds up! John Belushi would have made it perfect! And Gremlins was so inventive back then!
Really smart observation on the Slobs vs. Snobs archetypes of the era. Rings true.
Great vid!

Still love GREMLINS
If they ever do a remake, they should use original darker script as a guide

I didn't get to see ghostbusters in the theatre but I did see gremlins while my older brother and mom went to go see purple rain. I was 10 getting ready to turn 11 in July.
I was 12, I passed on Purple Rain for Gremlins and Ghostbusters.
@Me4-gc8qs I saw all 3 in the theater, don't remember what order. I did not remember that Purple Rain came then too.
@Me4-gc8qs .
84 was a good year. Maybe it is the nostalgia but nothing feels like the 80's
I call my fanbase Gremlins. I love the movies
I remember when Gremlins came out. My mom dropped me and my cousin at the movie theater and she got a ticket for parking on the curb even after the manager of the theater told the cop that she was dropping us off. I don't remember what happened after that, I not even 10 years old.
The Comedi Cart rolls on.
The mom in Gremlins is one of the most badass, albeit lesser known, female action heroes of the 80s, right along side Ripley and Sarah Conner :D
Happy 40th anniversary to both films.
I saw both those movies two days apart from each other in Louisiana while visiting my dad. What a year 1984 was.
Transformers started in 1984 as well. What a great year.
I found out from a Chinese friend that Mogwai in Mandarin means small monster.
He didn't mean to tell me that specifically, I actually asked him how to say small monster in Chinese and that's what he told me😊
Loved the editorial at the end Minty. Totally agree with you!
Ghostbusters, Gremlins, and Terminator all released the same year. Why can't cinema be as good as it was in the 1900's?
He means 1980's I think
Nightmare on elm Street and karate kid also
BEAT STREET was released on the same weekend as Gremlins and Ghostbusters.
Because media companies want people to slowly start accepting poor quality films/music. They eventually want everything to be AI generated, to reduce costs, and hope that by flooding the market with crap the general population won’t tell the difference.
Friday the 13th part 4 also, a lot argue that’s the best in the series
I have both U.S. movie releases on VHS and Ghostbusters on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K. I need to upgrade my Gremlins movies.❤
Gremlins 🎶 is Brilliant.I want a crossover between Ghostbusters,Beetlejuice& Gremlins even if it has to be in graphic novel form in NYC 🥵
20:18 that Atari box art looks like a Garbage pail kids sticker.❤
Good morning, Minty!!
At this point I guess any reason to keep mentioning ghostbusters or back to the future just makes Monty’s day
1984 spoiled us in the cinemas with The Terminator, The Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, Gremlins etc
I really like this video style. They don't all need to be "10 things you didn't know..." This is great. Plus you covered Weird Al, and it doesn't get better than that!

Lolz, my parents thought that ninja turtles, power rangers, and Batman were too violent for kids.... But Gremlins 1 & 2, were my favorite films next to Disney's Aladdin, and home alone, growing up as a kid...
lol when you flashed the ghostbusters sequels you intentionally left out the 2016. I salute you sir.
🎥Minty, albeit Back To The Future and The Goonies weren't released on the same day however "The Goonies" go underground on the exact same day- October 26, 1985- that Marty McFly travels back in time to 1955 in "Back To The Future".🏴☠🚗💥⛵
Thank you for your positivity!
Can I just say how much I love the light up display behind you that says
"Minty Comedi
C Arts"
Outstanding.... Truly a chef's kiss!
E.T. and Poltergeist was the summer of Spielberg in 1982 since those classics were released just weeks apart. But Ghostbusters and Gremlins on the same day is crazy. I'm so lucky to have grown up I the 1980's😊👍
