    Sergey- Here is a little more information about the northeast Bronx where I lived many years ago as a child. You might be surprised to learn that very close to Co-op City is a another "green zone" that consists of two golf courses, a boat basin and a large public beach along with walking trails, a garden club and even a horse path in the good old days! Not far away is City Island where you can go in the evening for a nice fish dinner and look out at the Long Island sound. New York City is a very diverse place!

    I've lived in co-op city for most of my life. It's a very nice area,clean and quiet. It is a little far from Manhattan but I wouldn't want to live in the actual city. It's too dirty and noisy. It looked a little dead on the streets when you came, was it during the afternoon during the week? Also which train did you take? It looks like you might have taken the 5 to gun hill road, going towards 241st. That was one of the longer ways to get to co-op. If you come again take the 6 train or take the 5 train towards drye Ave. and if you come back again, let me know and I can show you around.

    $75,000- $100,000 seems like high income for "Low income" housing/rent control. In many American States $100,000/yr income would have you among the top income bracket and afford you a $300,000 home. But I'm led to believe that in NY $100,000 is chump change. Nice reporting Sergey ! спаси́бо!

    I've lived in apartments all my life but nothing like that. I wonder what that would be like to live in buildings the size of those. And 50,000 people in that small of an area. That's the population of my entire town! It would be great to see what one of the apartments is like.
    Thanks for this! It was a great tour of that area.

      Hi Brent...As I told Sergey, I grew up in Co-op City, and my mother still lives there. We grew up in one of the "tower" buildings, on the 29th floor, with a terrace and a helluva view. it was a three bedroom apartment, and for my brother and I, it was a good place to grow up. Not perfect, but still much better than other area of the Bronx.
      My mother moved to a smaller, one bedroom apartment in the complex, following the death of my father in 1988. She still lives there today.

    The reason they put a cap on the max income is because these housing are heavily subsidized . they want to make sure only those who really need it gets the chance to stay in them. Same as most Singapore government housing.

    when you buy apartment here you don't buy property, you buy shares of co-op. Do they give a deed as evidence you have bought an apartment? can you sell it to the other person?

    • @dackwarb
      @dackwarb 2 года назад +1

      You get a stock certificate for the shares you have purchased and no you cannot sell it to another person. Once you leave, it goes back to the management company (Riverbay) and you will receive the price you originally paid for the apartment, minus 3 months rent and any damages identified in the apartment.

      Stalin - As I grew up there, I can tell you that it this video was probably shot early in the day, probably on a Sunday morning, when things are quieter there. Also, it's not like being in Manhattan. Co-op City is in the farthest northeast section of NYC, in the borough of the Bronx. Again, as you can see from the video, there is a lot of green space, and people are not crowded in, like in other parts of the city.

      No. The exterior of the buildings usually give way to that assumption, but it's not at all like the projects (especially its interior). It's for true middle class, blue collar workers (rent controlled). It actually had a majority of Jewish residents back then.

      It is absolutely a middle class neighborhood. It is very well maintained and has incredible views of the neighboring waterways and even Manhattan if you live on a high floor in some buildings. Do not mix it up with regular "projects" you may see on TV about poor areas in NYC.

      Co-op City, as it was originally conceived and still is, is for lower middle, and middle income families.It was built and funded in part by a piece of legislation back in the 60's in New York State known as the Mitchell-Lama Act. There are other housing developments in NYC that were built under the same act, but none as big as Co-op City. As I told Sergey, I grew up in Co-op City, and my mother still lives there.
