No trip to NYC is complete for me without a visit to City Island. As a Bronx expat, I visit relatives in NYC one or two times a year. Lunch at either Sea Shore or Crab Shanty followed by browsing the various shops is our regular routine, a Great Time!!!
I spent a lot of time in City Island as a child, visiting cousins. There are private beaches at the end of the streets for residents and their guests--charming little cove-like beaches.
I’m 62. Grew up in Canarsie, Brooklyn...lived in Forest Hills, Queens as an adult...and moved to Florida in 1994, when I was 37. Went to City Island for the FIRST time a week before I moved south, and I was kicking myself in the ass for not knowing about it sooner. I just heard “Bronx” my entire life and thought “Uh oh.” Best meal I ever had...BEST MEAL I EVER HAD!...and I freaking loved the vibe. I can’t overemphasize how much I’ve been kicking myself in the ass since 1994 for not making this place a big part of my NYC life.
@@joshdznyc If you remember the winters of 1993 and 1994…the two most miserable winters the northeast had in decades… You’ll better understand why I moved in June 1994. The morning after they were chasing OJ on the freeway!
Great as usual. I’ve been going to City island for 30 years regularly. Some of my favorite restaurants; Lobster house, ($$$) sit outside on the water in the summer. Crab Shanty ($$) look for there sometimes lobster dinner special. Black Whale, super Sunday brunch buffet. And the Fried lobster at the Pier is to die for. Traffic getting into the island on summer weekends is tough. But I like to go the rest of the year as well. My wife tought in the school there briefly. You should check out another very different neighborhood. Sea gate at the end of Coney Island in Brooklyn. It’s a private community at the end of the peninsula. It even has a light house. Maybe you can get in as “press”.
City Island is not a secret to those us who grew up here in New York.I used to go there all the time as a child. We always went to the very last restaurant on the end and sat outside to eat.And you forgot to show him Sammie’s perhaps the most famous restaurant of them all.
I lived there in one of the summer cottages on the water year round. It was before all the private fencing going out into the water. I used to walk the island in the water from one end to the other. Only one main street and in the summer it was bumper to bumper and hardly moved at all.
Very nice vid. Very nostalgic for me. I grew up in the Bronx. Used to go to City Island all the time. Rented row boats at Jack's Bait & Tackle (we're talkin the 60's) Went out on the fishing party boats. There used to be a public fishing pier at the end of City Island Ave. The only thing that remains of it are some pilings. You used to be able to fish off of the Fordam Street pier but entrance all locked up now. And oh yeah, the seafood. Lobster Box, Sammy's. Wonderful place back then. Went there a couple years ago and zero parking unfortunately. Side streets as well.
City Island is soooooo beautiful, there is also the city island new york.public library, so many nice houses, feels like you're on a vacation as you said. I love this vlog. Take the # 12 bus ( but check first the schedule).
The “neighborhood” reminds of Breezy Point, which was seriously damaged during Hurricane Sandy, except Breezy Point doesn’t have the stores/restaurants for visitors. It’s more isolated and doesn’t WELCOME visitors.
Good for you! A very different City Island than I experienced-I think the private boat tour and having a car made the difference. The cemetery was definitely neat.
I have great memories of City Island from when I was a kid back In the 1980’s. My Aunts’ Vinny and Colette had a nice house on Hawkins St. that I used to visit from nearby Mount Vernon. Another relative had a boat on the Island that we used to go fishing on. We had great times at the nearby Turtle Cove driving range and miniature golf place. I still visit the Island every now and then to get ice cream at Lickety Split and breakfast at the City Island Diner. You definitely don’t feel like you are in the Bronx when there. More of a New England feel. Thanks for the video 👍

The dh and I were just there a couple of weeks ago. We stopped to grab a bite to eat on our way back to NJ from LI. Seafood City"s fried baby lobster tails were awesome! Loved the laid back waterfront vibes. City Island is very quaint and a hidden gem!
This looks very similar to a small town we have right off of downtown San Diego called Coronado, which is one of the nicest parts of Southern California, so this is a big compliment from me (you might have heard of the classic Hotel Del Coronado which is located here)
I was born and raised in the Bronx. We used to go to City Island after swimming at nearby Orchard Beach. Most people go to City Island for the dozens of restaurants on the island. You should have covered a few more restaurants to give your viewers more of a feel of what's on the island.
I'm a fourth generation islander, but haven't lived there now for 30 years.... the food has slipped a bit and the weekend traffic is nuts... best story from my dad's days was that he couldn't go past a certain street unless he put shoes on... otherwise his summer was all barefoot. That, and that 4 generations in guys in my family all went to Louis the Barber....
Only been to City Island once, def a really cool lowkey spot. Most New Yorkers i feel like dont even really know it like that, unless theyre from Uptown or the Bronx
From Pelham Bay Park.. I'm a stones throw from City Island.. Definitely a hidden gem. Pro Tip: AVOID city Island on Mother's Day .. Just about impossible to get on the Island unless you're willing to wait an hour or so just to get over the bridge. Father's Day?? 1 min ride.

My mother was embarrassed…the cop was Bronx gruff…and i got fined $50 for driving without a license, for which in those days You had to go to court in person. I thought it was cool. About 45 min from midtown east to the last subway stop then either Uber (10 min) or Bus prob a little longer . Punch it into google maps

New York city is the my all time favourite city in the world bro
wow, and Michael's got a good vibe as well!
