  • I walk Co-op City, Bronx. This city within a city is huge! Unfortunately, I had to end this video short because of the blood-thirsty mosquitoes!
    Google Maps Route: goo.gl/maps/Tw...
    From Wikipedia:
"Co-op City (short for Cooperative City) is a cooperative housing development located in the northeast section of the borough of the Bronx in New York City. It is bounded by Interstate 95 to the southwest, west, and north and the Hutchinson River Parkway to the east and southeast, and is partially in the Baychester and Eastchester neighborhoods. With 43,752 residents as of the 2010 United States Census, it is the largest housing cooperative in the world.
Co-op City was formerly marshland before being occupied by an amusement park called Freedomland U.S.A. from 1960 to 1964. Construction began in 1966 and the first residents moved in two years later, though the project was not completed until 1973. The construction of the community was sponsored by the United Housing Foundation and financed with a mortgage loan from New York State Housing Finance Agency.
The community is part of Bronx Community District 10 and its ZIP Code is 10475. Nearby attractions include Pelham Bay Park, Orchard Beach and City Island."

I lived there from 1977 until 1997. I had such a great childhood. I still have friends that live there and visit from time to time. It’s not a war zone at all. Most of it is very well maintained. When I moved to other neighborhoods, It was hard. I was used to cleaned lobbies and elevators, central AC, 24 hour maintenance friendly neighbors just to name a few. Not easily found in a lot of apartments building. Btw the area that she called a war zone are called town houses. They are very nice and peaceful.

You got that right its far, Lol!! Especially if you don't own a car. When I lived in the Bronx many yrs ago I remember people buying those co ops up 70's/80's but I thought to myself was too far up in the Bronx. #6 train then a bus- no thank you!! I ended up moving to NC. But now have a friend that lives there, but he has a car. I always like visiting, very nice area. Now that I am older, I could absolutely live there. 😁

I had gone to freedom land as a kid, wasn’t old enough to appreciate it. Closed when I was 5 years old. Last area to be developed was Bay Plaza in the 80s . There was a Barnes and noble, Kmart , a few years back a mall containing a Macy’s was constructed , that’s the last undeveloped useable land . I’ve never been in it, pass it on the Hutchinson river parkway..

I wish I knew you were coming to my area, I would have been your tour guide. You passed my section first. It isn't a warzone she's being extra because they are renovating the outside of the buildings and even our elevators are being replaced. Yes, the bike path is our greenway where we hold most of our festivities. There are playgrounds in every section. You did a fabulous job. 650 credit score is for 1 bedroom. Co-OP city is subsidized making it affordable for the working class. It is based on income. I left Flushing, Queens 20 years ago due to gentrification. This place has allowed me to still live in NY. I am sorry you got caught by the mosquitoes. We also have River run where folks are nursing a community garden. Thanks again for stopping by i wish I could have helped. I would have taken you all over! You rock! Stay safe and blessed.

    • @user-ob3nt2mi4k
      @user-ob3nt2mi4k 4 года назад +1

@@jaysan6908 The prices range depending on floor, view and the last person. I believe the down payment for a 1 bedroom ranges from 12k ro 16k and 2 bedroom range is 18k to low 20k and then your monthly maintenance range 1 bedroom $800 to 1200 depending on your salary, 2 bedroom maintenance ranges from 1200 and up depends. If you make more than the maximum income they give you a surcharge. So if you make over 100k you would pay more but its its still a bargain. Google Riverbay Corporation co-op city the webpage should have up to date information.

Thank you for the video. I grew up in co-op city. It was nice to see my old digs.
This is the first video of yours that I have ever seen and I would like to offer you one bit of constructive criticism.
I would’ve preferred it if this video had started as you entered Co-op City rather than as you were approaching Co-op City. I think it was about eight minutes into the video before you actually entered Co-op City. Because I live 800 miles away from Co-op City and will almost certainly never be back there, I would rather have seen eight additional minutes of footage from inside Co-op City rather than eight minutes of footage approaching co-op city. There’s a lot more of Co-op City that didn’t make it into the video and eight additional minutes filmed from inside could’ve covered a lot of what was missing.
As I said, this is the first video of yours that I’ve ever watched and maybe this is just how you shoot your videos, a lengthy approach to a neighborhood and then entry. If that is a deliberate, intentional choice, then feel free to disregard my advice. But, if you are open to suggestions, please consider mine.

It’s probably one of most affordable places to live in NYC with great shopping and a middle class lifestyle. Please disregard the people that say it’s a war zone and unsafe. I doubt they know this area well.

Hope everything works out. Glad to hear that otherwise you're okay. Double bummer on your favorite running event being cancelled this year. You might want to keep an eye on the NYC situation. Right now it seems that more people are moving out than moving in. I guess the upside to that is that rents and property values will probably be coming down if the trend continues. I stayed in co op city many years ago to attend a convention. I liked it back then. It had a large Jewish population back then. I don’t know if they are still there.

Why was she saying that it's a war zone? Do people hang out there too much?

I lived there in the 70's-80's (Alcott Place). It was pretty nice. No gangs and public safety wasn't even armed. The demographics were different... it was about half white and half black with some Hispanic.

Just for some perspective, @ActionKid - my family did find it necessary to flee Co-Op City back in 1979 because of the crime we had been exposed to and targeted for. There were some young people in our Section 5 building, and in neighboring buildings, which really had it in for us - and for me in particular.

Back in the 70 s they said CoOp City was sinking into the swamp

Yes, it’s actually built on a swamp. When you walk outside of some of the buildings you can see huge gaps between the building and the ground where it’s sinking. They modeled it after Left Rack City.

I lived in Section 5 during the 70s. OK place but bland, boring, soulless and remote. Great views from the bldg terraces tho' lol. When I was there it was mostly Jews and Blacks, and retirees. Lots of controversy and scandal during those days with walls within apartments frequently splitting open and lots of basement flooding. It is, after all, built on top of a swamp. And there was talk about extending the #6 line into Co-op City back then but that eventually went nowhere. No dogs allowed is perhaps the best policy they have.
