I so enjoy Neil's curiosity, enthusiasm and intelligence. You know when Neil feels the need to retire - hopefully he'll consider producing a children's science program. I can easily imagine Neil would receive joy and many of our children - inspiration.
I hope and really doubt he would ever truly retire. He may someday relinquish his title as director of the Hayden Planetarium to someone else. Science communication isn’t a job to him, explaining the universe is his oxygen.

How fascinating when I thought that they were both challenging each other and that one was the favourite; whereas if you kept watching, you see that they are working with the minus and positive. A few times where there were a sense of fear in terms of “If they know what you were thinking about like speech bubble,” then that’s inferior. For example; there were 5 Ice Ages and in-between it became habitable again. Then there were times when the earth was too hot. So our current history and evolution as we know it could have happened many times before starting again over billions of years. There literally could have been technological advances, buildings and vehicles. Just over all that time there would be no evidence of it left behind.

I mean, to be fair the interviewer is being very dense at times to the point it annoyed me. As someone who's trying to get him to understand I imagine it was more so!
I'm gonna defend the interviewer here. It's not his job to be all cuddly and friendly. Tyson (whom I am a big fan of btw) is a very influential, and therefore powerful, person. When he speaks, people listen. When he writes a book, people read it. Hence, it's the interviewer's damned duty to ask tough questions and yes, be critical and challenging at times. That's the whole point of interviews like this. You want a preacher and a choir boy, you go to church. But a scientist who prides himself in valuing facts, logic and the scientific method, should be asked tough and critical questions. That tends to lead to the best answers too.

If the interviewer had not been there then there would be no direction to the discussion. I don't know if you have read the book that prompted the discussion but the point of any book of this nature is to provoke questions, as much as answer some. Books that don't do this are usually referred to as "text books" simply stating purported facts, some of which will be proven wrong in future generations.
The problem with the "why" question is that it is actually two distinct questions. One asks for a cause, and is answerable an "how" a thing came to be. The other asks for a goal, and is not answerable with out a plan and a knowledge of it. "Why did the toronado happen?" Because the interaction between two air masses resulted in an intense, localized vortex to form and propagate. "Why did the tornado happen?" Because the air resented the existence of the trailer park. Or it was a punishment from an angry god. Or the Vogons needed a clear space to fly through. Or ... well, I don't know, and I don't believe there is an answer to that "why" question.

I wanted to ask why the fusion of iron in stars is endothermic. I thought I'd look it up on Wikipedia but I got lost and ended up at pulse oximetry. There should be a "Neil" version of Alexa.
Imagine fusing atoms to get a bigger one as if you make a rubber band ball out of the same sizes of rubberbands. At the point of iron, when you try to add more rubberbands, they snap. The forces and energy at play, that keep the ball together, aren't enough anymore to sustain a bigger ball. More energy input is needed to force that, hence endothermic. Hope this made enough sense.

I like and respect Dr.DeGrasse Tyson very much. He is a fellow NYer and a marvelous communicator of VERY complex scientific principles. I wonder what he thinks of the "MUTI-VERSE" theory. Sci-Fi has used this as a storyline MANY, MANY, MANY times.

I have to add an argument on his view of visibale galaxies. If we were on the oposite side of the big bang, then the galaxies that are moving faster than light with the universal expansion would never be visible to us. Our cosmic horizon is limited to a narrowing 180 degree perspective. Still love this man and hope to meet him some day

Loved all the information in this video. I really enjoyed it. Couple of thoughts however, what is his obsession with people from the upper east side? Secondly, for someone that says we should avoid hubris can come off as being condescending at times? Perhaps it is more comedic sarcasm then condescension. Just a couple of questions/thoughts. When I was 9, I was stood on a football pitch and a craft that was flying around 30/40mph at a height of 150/300ft up. The size of half the pitch flew over my head silently. It was circular in shape, I could see all the ducting and ventilation on its under belly, it was dark gun metal in colour with deep red light scattered randomly on its under belly. To hear these experts talk about life not existing else where. I just think back to that moment and think, my god you are so wrong, I just can't prove it. I admit, sure it could be a top secret craft. But it wasn't. It wasn't something we can grasp. It flew directly over my head. Since 97 then I have had 3 other encounters. The second one in 04/05, I was laying in bed around midnight, a voice that still seems odd to me randomly popped into my head "You should look out of the window" which I did. Between the houses, about 1/4 mile away was a silent green silver disc. The green light was pulsating around it and it just hovered there. I ran down stairs, called my dad. He caught just the tail end of it as it disappeared behind the houses. I have another memory which isn't so clear and it involves missing time. My first memory around 3 years old i was laying in bed, a grey woman standing on the banister (what I assumed was Victorian clothing, I was wrong). I remember I felt like I was being judged. A about a decade ago my family did a family tree, we found out that we had an ancestor disappear at Roanoke. A few months ago did a Google search. Searched women's fashion around the year 1580. Guess what. The grey woman I saw was wearing that fashion from that period. My father lost his sister when he was young. He had to have medical help because after she died, he repeatedly told my nan and grandfather that people from the clouds kept on visiting. Telling him his sister will be okay. He described these beings as small in size. He also saw a craft similar to the one I saw in 97. How ever the one he saw was like a cereal box in design. But the ducting and ventilation type fixtures remained the same in design. Am not saying these events are linked. All that I'm saying is. Something is up there. That I am 100% sure of and I don't need an IQ of 160 to know it. Of course I expect you to laugh it off and call me an idiot. But what ever. That's half my story and I'm sticking to it.

The distance to the next nearest star makes it impossible to have been visited by other life forms and thus we have no proof they actually exist or ever have existed, perhaps we're the first and only to have existed - the earth as a whole, including all the species that exist and, have ever existed that is. Our bodies can not withstand the speed that it is needed to travel to star, ever. Not even remotely close. At least that is what we were taught in college but some say humans could withstand those speeds close to the speed of light. I would argue this is possible but the body can not accelerate hard enough and survive to utilize this speed and the same can be said with slowing down. There would need to be a substantial amount of ramp-up time to those speeds and the same with slowing down which would be the same distance and time it took to accelerate. So, once again, travel to the nearest start is beyond our lifespan or even thousands of generations. There would have to be some sort of dimensional transit system, think portals but even then it would have taken 40-70k years or longer at our current technology and we would need to travel faster than the speed of light to really make that work. Others stars are even further away. Of course, some say the physiology of aliens may not be the same and their tech higher. Time and the laws of physics are constant so there would be limitations on their bodies too. I've always said from the images of our past, the manuscripts, and all texts about crafts, including what is in the bible shows in my opinion that there are multi-dimensions found within the light and the human eye can only see less than .0035% of the electromagnetic spectrum. Some creatures can see more than we can and testing has proven this without being able to describe what the color is, since we can not see it, we can not remotely describe it. Now, with that, I would like to mention testing has been done on the light spectrum and being able to see beyond what is physically possible. I do not have the articles because this was read long ago. I believe that what is unknown is the waging war described in the bible. The war between the fallen and angles and there are times that evidence comes through or gets left behind unintentionally. What we can describe as UFOs or machines in relation to what we have, ancient man would have not been able to describe in such a manner and therefore we have the descriptions of what they were able to comprehend on their known knowledge at the time. Remember man is not any smarter now than they were several thousand years ago. We only have what we know because of the collective contributive knowledge and we 'modern' humans are taking advantage of that knowledge that was written down and added to over the years.

I so enjoy Neil's curiosity, enthusiasm and intelligence. You know when Neil feels the need to retire - hopefully he'll consider producing a children's science program. I can easily imagine Neil would receive joy and many of our children - inspiration.
I hope and really doubt he would ever truly retire. He may someday relinquish his title as director of the Hayden Planetarium to someone else. Science communication isn’t a job to him, explaining the universe is his oxygen.

Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.
Neil does not know BASIC science. Not only can't we have creation without God, Neil does not know that we also can't have science without God. The laws of nature can only come from a Lawgiver, God.

Yeah, I’ve been dreaming about this stuff. My legs were propped up by 2 pillows when I fell asleep listening so my legs felt light. Part of my dream I was in space just floating around. It was a trip for sure. I was bummed when I woke!

I'm gonna defend the interviewer here. It's not his job to be all cuddly and friendly. Tyson (whom I am a big fan of btw) is a very influential, and therefore powerful, person. When he speaks, people listen. When he writes a book, people read it. Hence, it's the interviewer's damned duty to ask tough questions and yes, be critical and challenging at times. That's the whole point of interviews like this. You want a preacher and a choir boy, you go to church. But a scientist who prides himself in valuing facts, logic and the scientific method, should be asked tough and critical questions. That tends to lead to the best answers too.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson was great. The interviewer was distracting and frustrating to be as polite as I can be about it.
If the interviewer had not been there then there would be no direction to the discussion. I don't know if you have read the book that prompted the discussion but the point of any book of this nature is to provoke questions, as much as answer some. Books that don't do this are usually referred to as "text books" simply stating purported facts, some of which will be proven wrong in future generations.

The problem with the "why" question is that it is actually two distinct questions. One asks for a cause, and is answerable an "how" a thing came to be. The other asks for a goal, and is not answerable with out a plan and a knowledge of it. "Why did the toronado happen?" Because the interaction between two air masses resulted in an intense, localized vortex to form and propagate. "Why did the tornado happen?" Because the air resented the existence of the trailer park. Or it was a punishment from an angry god. Or the Vogons needed a clear space to fly through. Or ... well, I don't know, and I don't believe there is an answer to that "why" question.
If a scientist asks why I think he is really asking how. Why is too hard a question. And to your point it implies intent, reason, or a goal.

I have to add an argument on his view of visibale galaxies. If we were on the oposite side of the big bang, then the galaxies that are moving faster than light with the universal expansion would never be visible to us. Our cosmic horizon is limited to a narrowing 180 degree perspective. Still love this man and hope to meet him some day

Tyson makes a lot of sense. I disagree with a quarter of what he said but he knows how to teach his principles without appearing condescending. The way he puts the universe helps you to marvel about its beauty. That's why I listen to him

Loved all the information in this video. I really enjoyed it. Couple of thoughts however, what is his obsession with people from the upper east side? Secondly, for someone that says we should avoid hubris can come off as being condescending at times? Perhaps it is more comedic sarcasm then condescension. Just a couple of questions/thoughts. Really enjoyed the video however love to learn.

When I was 9, I was stood on a football pitch and a craft that was flying around 30/40mph at a height of 150/300ft up. The size of half the pitch flew over my head silently. It was circular in shape, I could see all the ducting and ventilation on its under belly, it was dark gun metal in colour with deep red light scattered randomly on its under belly.
To hear these experts talk about life not existing else where. I just think back to that moment and think, my god you are so wrong, I just can't prove it.
I admit, sure it could be a top secret craft. But it wasn't. It wasn't something we can grasp.
It flew directly over my head. Since 97 then I have had 3 other encounters.
The second one in 04/05, I was laying in bed around midnight, a voice that still seems odd to me randomly popped into my head "You should look out of the window" which I did. Between the houses, about 1/4 mile away was a silent green silver disc. The green light was pulsating around it and it just hovered there. I ran down stairs, called my dad. He caught just the tail end of it as it disappeared behind the houses.
I have another memory which isn't so clear and it involves missing time.
My first memory around 3 years old i was laying in bed, a grey woman standing on the banister (what I assumed was Victorian clothing, I was wrong). I remember I felt like I was being judged.
A about a decade ago my family did a family tree, we found out that we had an ancestor disappear at Roanoke.
A few months ago did a Google search. Searched women's fashion around the year 1580. Guess what. The grey woman I saw was wearing that fashion from that period.
My father lost his sister when he was young. He had to have medical help because after she died, he repeatedly told my nan and grandfather that people from the clouds kept on visiting. Telling him his sister will be okay. He described these beings as small in size.
He also saw a craft similar to the one I saw in 97. How ever the one he saw was like a cereal box in design. But the ducting and ventilation type fixtures remained the same in design.
Am not saying these events are linked. All that I'm saying is. Something is up there. That I am 100% sure of and I don't need an IQ of 160 to know it.

oh, it's demons. It's just that you don't want to look at some sin in your family background. there is abuse going on in your family. some sort. Sinister demons are haunting you. So it's not like you didn't do anything bad to others.
The distance to the next nearest star makes it impossible to have been visited by other life forms and thus we have no proof they actually exist or ever have existed, perhaps we're the first and only to have existed - the earth as a whole, including all the species that exist and, have ever existed that is.
Our bodies can not withstand the speed that it is needed to travel to star, ever. Not even remotely close. At least that is what we were taught in college but some say humans could withstand those speeds close to the speed of light. I would argue this is possible but the body can not accelerate hard enough and survive to utilize this speed and the same can be said with slowing down. There would need to be a substantial amount of ramp-up time to those speeds and the same with slowing down which would be the same distance and time it took to accelerate. So, once again, travel to the nearest start is beyond our lifespan or even thousands of generations.
There would have to be some sort of dimensional transit system, think portals but even then it would have taken 40-70k years or longer at our current technology and we would need to travel faster than the speed of light to really make that work. Others stars are even further away.
Of course, some say the physiology of aliens may not be the same and their tech higher. Time and the laws of physics are constant so there would be limitations on their bodies too.
I've always said from the images of our past, the manuscripts, and all texts about crafts, including what is in the bible shows in my opinion that there are multi-dimensions found within the light and the human eye can only see less than .0035% of the electromagnetic spectrum. Some creatures can see more than we can and testing has proven this without being able to describe what the color is, since we can not see it, we can not remotely describe it.
Now, with that, I would like to mention testing has been done on the light spectrum and being able to see beyond what is physically possible. I do not have the articles because this was read long ago. I believe that what is unknown is the waging war described in the bible. The war between the fallen and angles and there are times that evidence comes through or gets left behind unintentionally. What we can describe as UFOs or machines in relation to what we have, ancient man would have not been able to describe in such a manner and therefore we have the descriptions of what they were able to comprehend on their known knowledge at the time. Remember man is not any smarter now than they were several thousand years ago. We only have what we know because of the collective contributive knowledge and we 'modern' humans are taking advantage of that knowledge that was written down and added to over the years.
