If you understand what happened, you know just how bad most astronomers are. At the conference where they demoted Pluto, a committee with planetary scientists defined a planet as something large enough to have gravity making it round and small enough not to have fusion. Simple, clear, logical. At the end of the conference, after most people left, a bunch of astronomers ignored the planetary scientist and made a decision that, while dwarf stars are stars, dwarf planets aren't planets. Nonsensical and non-scientific.
I love chuck and Neil together man. It’s really great. Chucks comedic relief yet his clear understanding of what they’re speaking of and Neil for being this inquisitive genius that he is. Asking all the perfect questions, both of them.
Chuck should have 10% humour, 15% being humbled, appreciative, supportive, and thankful of having such privileged lessons. (As his 25% part of a 4 parts group.)
So much of our path is determined by our teachers. In high school I had a chemistry teacher who told me I was just not capable of understanding science, for many years after I truly hated science…however I have recently been reading a lot on physics. I am an English teacher and I love my job, but who knows what would have happened if that teacher back then had more patience and passion and inspired me.

one thing i have never got my head around is as you approach a black hole time becomes slower and slower until it becomes an infintely long time from an outside observor. so how does a black hole continue growing? from our viewpoint it takes an infinite amount of time for it to gain more mass. people have tried to explain it to me before but i never got it.

Beautiful and insightful. I thought I knew all I wanted to know about black holes, but that thing about it being a bunch of quantum wormholes or the small black holes in the early universe made me want to hear so much more!
@@user-jy6ur8gb1c Just because you don't understand what is being said, that doesn't make it wrong, lies or a word salada. With all respect, it just means you are ignorant about the subject and need to learn more about it to understand. Is like you talking about something you know deeply about, and someone else just calls you a liar, because they don't know or understand what you are talking about, but aren't humble enough to admite it, so they attack you and your knowledge, or worse, they really think all what they know, is everything they need to know or is all what exists to know, and because other people said something, they didn't knew or understand, therefore they can only be wrong and saying bs. Don't be that people.
@@TravelWithBradley I take that is directed at me, if so why?! Are you afraid of words? Of reading? Didn't you stop to think that, perhaps those that write big sentences, just have more to say? Perhaps they are more educated individuals (thou this is not always the case...) that think more words, are best to convey a idea properly or perhaps, they just like to write, train their written English? Not my main language btw... I don't know why you would think such a thing, perhaps you don't and are just being obnoxious, because you didn't like what I wrote to the other guy and that's fine. But if you really think, those that write big sentences are "insane" somehow, that is very strange indeed... or insane... So a friendly word of advice (if you are still reading this...) instead of assuming on the mental health of others, based on the numbers of words they write, perhaps you should based it on what they say instead... Btw sorry for writing big sentences again, I know you don't like that.

Forever grateful that you do this! 😃❤️👍🏽
They said a black hole is not an object but just a place, but I thought I understood a black hole to be a "thing" in the sense that it was all the quantum material that got broken down past its atomic structure, and all of the ripped apart atoms were crammed together in the center by gravity, and it was the sheer density that produced it's insane amount of gravity? So essentially I thought a black hole was the stuff that got crammed together in the center, and the density of it causes all the distorted physics. Am I missing something here?
When Janna says that once you're inside a black hole, the singularity is no longer a "place" that you could possibly avoid, it becomes time, your future which is unavailable.... (I did paraphrase) Did anyone else think to themselves... that's just like death. It's a point in time that is inevitable to everyone one of us amd everything in our universe will eventually die.... so with what she said and Neil's suggestion about us in a black hole.... couldn't the two possibilities co exist?? Just a thought I had. ❤
This StarTalk has a rating of five Chuck's. How many times Chuck's mind was blown! Lol a beautiful blend on stage great job guys and girls SCIENCE! 👏👏👏🤩🖖🏽♾️
I love that so many people enjoyed this video and learned something.. I am definitely one of the few who thinks the abrupt and seldomly humorous “comedic” interruptions from Chuck were far too frequent. And Neil butting in often appeared patronizing to the guest speakers. I mean.. The two of them together still don’t add up to a Howard Stern level of bad interviewers.. but they’re getting close. Overall it was clearly enjoyable to the masses; however, I think I’ll stick with Brian Cox’s lectures.
Thanks for uploading these talks and for the podcast. Just a correction in Interstellar the name of the main robot is TARS not KIPP. KIPP is one of the other robots which operates the shuttle autonomously on Mann's planet.

Wow! Science and comedy together is the recipe for the most entertainment moments in life
The two ladies shine like beautiful stars because they conduct themselves with the humility of scientists. Scientists are by far a higher stature than the showmen. I love Neil deGrass because of his intellectt and knowledge.
Love this so far. Janna explains great, and she's so inspiring ✨️
Isn't she?!! Her husband is also inspiring, an amazing singer/musician/songwriter as is their son Gibson.
Janna's awesome and gotta say I love Jenny's shirt: a eulogy for Pluto the planet.😊
I'd love to be her grad student
It's never too late to expand one's vocabulary!! 😇
startalk is the very best channel on youtube!
StarTalk normally is fine, but StarTalk like this is amazing!
I just listened to your podcast of two years ago with Malcolm Gladwell and Chuck Nice. Three towering, brilliant minds in the bodies of regular doods with a sense of humor that had me rolling on the floor. MORE of that, please!
Watching this discussion was better than watching a movie in a cinema ❤
one thing i have never got my head around is as you approach a black hole time becomes slower and slower until it becomes an infintely long time from an outside observor. so how does a black hole continue growing? from our viewpoint it takes an infinite amount of time for it to gain more mass. people have tried to explain it to me before but i never got it.
I've got a question that is a bit strange. What size would a star have to be to create a black hole the size of our solar system
Good to see an in person event. Reminds me of the old days when Startalk was on National Geographic.
I love it when you do live shows in front of an audience. It's so much more fun.
Wish I could go to one of them
This talk was great, can't wait for more. Love Chuck! You can tell he is honestly curious about these subjects just by how he sits and watches the other speakers. And I friggin love that.
My point here is that so much of what is on television & radio is often overblown or just plain false - this is such a breath of fresh air.
Thank you everybody for the brilliant, engaging time! I never get tired of hearing Janna speak about these things... For me, (a non-physicist) it's like listening to Spock, at a meeting in a Star Trek scene. And, I mean that in the most complimentary way. :)
As much as I love how well NDT and chuck nice work together, the rate at which they'd cut off their guests just seconds into trying to answer a complex question wasn't just rude but beyond unprofessional as members of the science community
What a great event! This shows completely new approach on how to talk about science and educate people in a digestible way. You kept attention for more than an hour and half and I still feel that I am ready for more :-) I wish I was there on live but so far away, I hope you will visit Poland in Europe some time. It would be great! All the best to you all!
Fun, Educative, Comic, and above all KNOWLEDGE gained!!!. Chuck and Neil are the best duo💯❤
Damn, I love this man! And Chuck!
Cute ending 😅. Watching this made me realise I need some more science friends. I love hearing people talk about science, even though I wouldn't say I'm a science guy. Its just really interesting and always gets my mind moving and questioning.
I like startalk always educating in a fun way
The world needs more of these conversations
Minus the world's worst comedian.
@@joeh9009 you've clearly never been to a comedy club for a spot show. There are hundreds of comics worse than Chuck.
@@kylecarter1599 Every comedy show i have been to is in the UK and every comedian was hilarious. It must be my British sense of humour that doesn't get his so called humour.
@joeh9009 Yeah, there's a major disconnect between US and UK comedy. I've never been able to figure out why.
I'm glad to live in a era where girls are no longer put in the second row or kept in the shadow of mans. Janna and Jenny are amasing and I hope they can inspire young woman to go full geek.
Loving the professors Tshirt trolling Neil. PLUTO never forget 1930-2006. 😂 Fascinating show. Inspirational women of science.
She's a legend for that t shirt! 😅
Such a great panel, thank you!! The women were awesome, the comedian enjoyable, Neil rocked the role of facilitator and all in all, totally engaging. I can't get enough of this stuff and always appreciate it being put in layperson's terms. Thank you!!
love the talk thank you
Wow! Just incredible!! No other words! The guests are amazing, Neil’s ability to decipher and explain things is amazing, the way the astro community is working together is amazing!! I'm just blown out!! Why did we not learn even 0.1% of this in school!!! It would have made so many people go for astronomy!!
It's an ever growing field. Most of this wasn't known a few decades ago.
yes i believe i really might have then followed the passion I didn't know I had yet in astronomy....now my life is in shambles
Beautiful and insightful. I thought I knew all I wanted to know about black holes, but that thing about it being a bunch of quantum wormholes or the small black holes in the early universe made me want to hear so much more!
Never disappointed listening to Neil and his guests and star talk. What a thought provoking and educational episodes
No. It's a word salad.
You can't respond that much to a sentence. It makes you look insane.
@@Argoon1981 Does it actually dawn on you? You cooked another word salad. O succus. I don't need "lessons" from a chap who cannot even use basic punctuation.
Are you sure you are as smart as you think you are? Because everything you accuse me of (even though you do not know me at all) is a massive twist of irony.
How old are you son?
OH BOY i cant even begin to explain how excited i am to fall asleep to this
So thankful for Neil and Chuck and the guests that join them. Inspiring and hilarious at the same time. I finally attended a live talk with Neil a couple months ago and it was wonderful! This is why I became an engineer…because I was so in awe of these kinds of discussions when I was just five years old. Keep up the great work guys! I listen to you every day. Forever grateful that you do this! 😃❤️👍🏽
Janna's laugh is the most contagius I've heard in a very long time! Loved it!!
More. We need more of this sort of thing. This is engaging even if you are new to Science. Excellent!
I was at this show and it was so much fun. We love you Neil and Chuck!
No, you weren’t.
@@jamesb6857 I beg your pardon, but I was. What’s your problem?
@@GordoFunk555you can tell he's not a dog person cause he didn't apologize.
(I did paraphrase)
Did anyone else think to themselves... that's just like death. It's a point in time that is inevitable to everyone one of us amd everything in our universe will eventually die.... so with what she said and Neil's suggestion about us in a black hole.... couldn't the two possibilities co exist?? Just a thought I had. ❤
More live startalks please, it is absolutely dope. Cheers from Brazil!!
This was amazing!!! Thank you all so very much❤❤❤
These four need to come on stage once a month and chit chat. Love it! Need it!
Fun watch 😊... Good thing they've discussed the new discoveries found by janes webb.
I could listen to this all day! Chuck should lay off the caffeine though lol. I didn’t understand a lot BUT, I did learn a great deal.
Love Neal & Chuck. You guys are awesome!
Hi
Neil is such a poet :) these shows are great and inspirational, keep em comin!
Not a poet. That would mean skillful use of language and the man speaks horrid english. If you don t catch this then....
It was a pleasure attending at the Keswick again ! This show was absolutely amazing!
Great talk, fantastic panel. Well done, extremely entertaining and informative!
If from watching back of ypur phone, youll see light pass from the dark side of it based on ones perspective. Good job! Tysm
Thanks for uploading these talks and for the podcast.
Just a correction in Interstellar the name of the main robot is TARS not KIPP. KIPP is one of the other robots which operates the shuttle autonomously on Mann's planet.
@24:10 Niel acting like an embarrassed dad but Chuck was absolutely crushing it stealing the show😂
It is so satisfying to see that an "American way" of a presentation actually CAN be a GREAT way to share important things with the people.I think It is the second best thing America gave to humanity after jazz music. Actually it is the same. Jazz science I will call it!
Chuck and Neil -you guys make this so entertaining and informative- amazing stuff
