Astrophysicist superstar Neil deGrasse Tyson pulls no punches. America's favorite scientist talks climate change, why he doesn't fear death, and whether he thinks Elon Musk's mission to Mars will succeed.

“You don’t have to be good at math. You have to WANT to be good at it.”
-Neil Degrasse Tyson
But if you want to be good it at it you first have to be able to want it
@@lovemattvids Very true
@@lovemattvids yeah but that's a little loose considering that could be interpreting for anything. You find the reasoning and the ambition for wanting to do it for yourself. Feynman explains the sensation of euphoria when discovering and learning and figuring out with imagination. Your own imagination.

That’s basically for everything.
Being a Math Educator - that is by far for the people who say "Algebra" is Hard!
"You're an amazing man"
"No, the universe is amazing. Im just revealing that fact"
This man is poetry personified.
I coulda said that :-)
I say that like all the time. Ha
Yes this is unbelievable if you think that it wasnt even planned. He is so spontaneus! A living legend and i think he is quite underestimated maybe because of his modesty. I want to hear him more often on TV and everywhere!
One can tell Larry is genuinely scarred of death, just the way he's inquiring about it, instead of looking at all his accomplishments in his life-time to be passed down to his kids. Neil is right, we're here for a relatively short amount of time, so we should use that opportunity to accomplish as much as possible for the betterment of humanity.
No, God is amazing. The universe is just revealing that fact. Dude can't even explain the most basic fundamental problem with our existence. Something cannot come from nothing. This truth traced back far enough reveals that there must be something that is eternal. An unmoved mover. Otherwise, the very laws of physics that Neil studies crash under the weight of their impossibility. After all, a law that governs nothing is no law at all. Yet, we are here. And we are here because of an amazing eternal God. Pretty simple, yet this "genius" is too prideful to state the obvious and therefore has to make a joke to divert attention off the fact that no worship of science will ever be able to solve or prove how something can come from nothing. Love his intellect and charm, and he's great at educating folks based off what he "knows", but when the simplest equation can't be solved I can't trust your deductive reasoning that follows.
Does anyone else just every so often need to hear Neil deGrasse Tyson talk
“I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.” - Mark Twain
One of my all time favorite quotes!
Best part is all the inconveniences Twain was thinking of having suffered while alive, probably including being asked dumb questions :D
Death is what gives life meaning.
well technically you didn't exist so i don't see how it counts as death

@Be Informed There you have it... Afterlife... Beyond life... When life has end it... So until here it's pretty much simple but let's take it further... Whatever the opinion is probably our doubt or believe isn't about afterlife but instead about "Can we keep our conscious?" Well that brings into play one of the most intrinsic anguish "Loss" ... To be alone... By the way we're people because we can relate with each other. If we were alone since we born we never had become people. The universe doesn't cares at all about us! It's we that cares about the universe... So instead of a egocentric eternity (history and science already show us many times how wrong we were about that) that steals our humanity maybe we start to appreciate life and all it's beauty understanding ending as part of a process... Springtime is near... What it will happen with the flowers!?
The argument of Uncaused cause: 1. “Something” exists. 2. 2. This “something” either:
A: Caused itself to exist.
B: Was caused to exist by another.
C: Has always existed
3. But nothing can cause itself to exist, so if it was caused to exist, then it was caused by another.
4. There cannot be an infinite series of causes because without a First Cause there would be no subsequent causes.
5. Therefore, there must be a First Cause which is Uncaused.

“Be ashamed to die until you have scored some victory for humanity” in other words humanity is better of for you having lived it in. I love that quote and I think if everybody kept that in mind we could certainly take a step closer to the utopia everybody dreams of.
Well Dr Degrasse probably thinks that we could make our own utopia while we’re still alive so that others can benefit from it. I’m not talking in the physical sense, but a utopia in knowledge.
Dr Degrasse has accomplished this by inspiring so many to follow in his footsteps in search of knowledge.

It couldn’t have escaped Larry that his own transition was near and it may well be why he slotted in a session with Tyson. But I have a nagging sense that the astrophysicist’s take on the whole thing, seeing that he - typical of the far majority of scientists - gives short shrift to consciousness, has proffered an incomplete view.
Dr. Tyson, you are down to earth and personable. There is an underserved population who like to hear honest, intelligent conversation.
One of the most amazing interviews I have ever seen and enjoyed.. but I admit to loving both of them, I grew up with Larry King on CNN (90s) and Neil is just a blessing to humanity 😍
Neil might just have the best speaking skills of all time, the poetic monologues he is able to construct in regular conversations are works of art in the form of soundwaves.
Hardly. But he is good at all of his jobs. Very good.
I can listen to him talk for hours without getting tired. His personality is so REFRESHING . I wish more of us could be as "frank" as Neil is and say it that you NEVER think he is talking DOWN to us.Isn't Chuck the prefect co-host for StarTalk?
Repetition helps being a great orator. I've been watching his videos by dozens, he does tend to repeat a certain number of pre-made sentences or constructs. It sounds like he's producing it live, but he actually knows he's going to use this or that 'wow' sentence one after the other. It has a wow effect but it's almost 'rehearsed'. Still love him and his work to pieces.
@Greg the truth doesn't change. It can only be rephrased in so many ways.
He's funky.
"I fear living a life where I could've accomplished something and didn't" ... damn ...
I love both of these men. Larry was the master of interviewing people. He could reach others on so many levels. Every time I hear Dr. Tyson speak I learn something. His brilliance is matched only by his passion to learn and to teach others what he's learned. Both of them were and are magnificent.
Maybe Larry had 60,000 favorite guests. I doubt it but he had a way of bringing out the best in his guests.
Neil is yummy
did Neil Graduate college ?
"JUST IN CASE i cant tell anyone after i die" .... after he just stressed how impossible any consciousness is after death.. he's a story teller with opinions. Noone. NOONE really knows until the time comes.
Scientists did brain scans on dead people after 24hr and found brain waves still active in the brains like they were still alive. Alot of question for sure but I truly believe when we die its extremely euphoric and relaxing because all of the chemicals in your brain get released, that's a rush in a half if you think of it and if it's like that, that's ok. I dont wanna die but if life set it up where death literally feels good, then death is ok.
When your cult leader says all these..then it's all fine..but when a scientist discuss this then you get pissed 😂😂😂
And won't know after, either. JS

I think it was Einstein said "If you can't explain something simply enough, you don't understand it enough". That's Mr. Tyson with just about any subject. He breaks it down so simply that even theoretical concepts make it seem like we should have known it all along.

4:49 - "..I remember opening a calculus book for the first time..." OMG is he right on. From 8th grade to my junior year in high school I loved algebra and trig. Then I was told for my senior year that if I wanted to take physics and AP chemistry I would have to take calculus. I do believe that was the longest school year of my life trying to understand calculus. Nothing in college ever came close in difficulty as my senior year deciphering calculus.
In the words of Homer Simpson ....Nerd. jk. Math is kool i guess but sometimes people's motivation far exceeds there talent but better to have both. To be good with numbers is a talent cuz when u think about it everything is numbers. Everyone and everything . We live in the Matrix .
That's because I have NEVER heard calculus explained properly. I could do it, but would have to prepare a long time.
I have a theory of how to teach. You should always start with a problem you're trying to solve. With calculus, I would start with an architect trying to make a building in a perfect circle. Eventually, you will realize you need to invent 'calculus' to get the circle exact.

I stand in awe of someone who can mangle the English language so badly, but still convey so clearly and accurately what needs to be said!
Rip Larry you still a legend
I'm with Larry. After knowing life and having consciousness I do not want to lose it. I do not want to stop being me.
Read "Autobiography of yogi" you will die happily 😊🙏
Good luck.
I wish I had him as a science teacher when I went to Alfred E. Smith HS in the Bronx.
Neil is awesome.....He speaks to his audience, in layman terms......so much fun to listen to
