I love how you broke this all down! Just in case this helps anyone reading through the comments I have straight fine but thick hair and I highly recommend only using rip and twist to start your dreads. I ended up removing my first set because of the crochet method!!! It looks great at first but within two to three months became my biggest regret. The ones that were only rip and twisted annoyed me at first but were doing wonderfully at the 6 month mark. I am going to start another set after my hair grows back a few inches from where I cut it (the crochet method also made it a major headache to remove them). Happy dreading everyone!!!

I have very straight hair and used the crochet hook method. I'm coming up on a year and couldn't be happier with the result.
The only thing that was even slightly an issue was that for the first couple months, they looked unnatural and they were very tight.
After the first few months though I got through the "ugly" phase and now almost a year later I'm so happy with them and would recommend this method for straight hair any day!

Hey I think you are great! I’m glad I found you. I had dreads in my 20’s, before RUclips. 😂 we did lots of stuff to try and make them happen. Ultimately I bought some beer an had friends over. They helped me section it off and twist/ripped my way into dread-dom. I had to chop them for personal reasons.
I have 4 kids now 20 years later and I’m watching your channel enjoying the great info and positivity!

I know this video is older. I have a weird combo of hair types, but overall I'd say I'm maybe 2A, and most of my hair has zero texture!! Not owned a brush in over 10 years, and barely need to comb it because it just stays so smooth! It took me over 50 hours (over the course of 2 weeks) to get through all of my hair. I did twist&rip with crochet and interlocking, and I killed my shoulders back-combing too. Each dread took nearly an hour; longer if I had to pause to do anything else. Never been one to wash my hair often, so my scalp is used to me going long period without washing (like you talked about in a different video). I lightly washed and dried my hair in the afternoon and allowed it to dry mostly in the sun. The next morning, almost all of my dreads were half unlocked! Took me another 4 days just to get them retwisted. My husband has been picking at me because I went from doing nearly zero maintenance on my hair to spending all my downtime to maintain dreads lol.

Hey! I think from his diagram, I might have 3c or 4a as well. My plan is to freeform. I would like to ask, if you could explain what you meant about locing and long hair. Ninti 999 they seem to get much thicker when you start with longer hair most of the time. Twist and rip doesn't JUST work for straight hair. It works for afrocentric and biracial hair as well.

Just to add something nobody ever seems to mention: Dread locks are like sponges, if they are soaked, it can take days for them to dry properly, depending on how fat they are.. Ok, maybe not multiple days, but 1

Hey Gunter, as someone who's about to start locking his hair (white Scottish person btw with type 1 hair) would you be able to go through the "washing process" when you have newly t&w+ch dreads. In your last vid you said "the more you wash the quicker it locks" but how do I wash without my hair opening up and going straight again? Help would be appreciated

You could just section it up and put it in a few buns that way it won't become undone

I have 4b hair and I’m thinking of interlocking the roots of the two strand twist I currently got in but I also plan to pull it out in a couple years. What’s the best method to use so that I’m able to pull it out?

Just keep the 2 strands in and let them lock

sup man. this video was great.
started my locs in jan w the sponge rub method and they're looking pretty dope.
i've got a question: you mentioned that one could start dreadlocks by braiding the hair and leaving it braided. wouldn't this be an effective method for straight hair as well seeing as the braids loc up and muture naturally over time?
    love your content.
    stay blessed x

I mean technically, but straight hair is (typically) very elastic so with that in mind it is braided tether but may come out becaue it isnt locked up
