As a professional hairdresser I have to mention, you can go back to black after bleaching hair, you need to dye your hair red first before you apply the black dye. The reason for this is because all hair has 2 melanins called eumelanin (Blue, purple, cold pigments) and pheomelanin (red, orange, yellow, warm pigments) and so when you do have bleached hair and then go straight for dying it black you're missing a lot of warm pigment in black hair so it ends up coming off as blue or green. I can get more into detail about it but that's essentially the gist of it, sometimes this method is called "prepping" the hair. This doesn't just apply to black dyes, whenever you want to go darker, always add varying degrees of red, if you want to go from blonde to medium brown, add some less intense red pigment like a pastel red (heavily diluted), if you wanna go black, add straight up red dye before the black.
Also for the girl with the blonde locs… she should’ve canceled her yellow tone out with RED before going straight to black… this will help get rid of the green hues!

There's a technique for taking blonde hair back to light brown, med brown, and dark brown, etc. The trick is filling the hair shaft with another color first. It sounds crazy, but it prevents your hair from turning greenish or blueish brown. When you bleach hair, you're leaving the shaft hollow from pulling the pigment out. You need to refill the shaft with a base color before going brown. At least that's how it was explained to me when I made that exact mistake and ended up with greenish brown hair. It was heartbreaking to see my hair like that. Lesson learned. Years later when I decided to go from blonde back to light brown I did it correctly. The color was a beautiful light brown. The process of going dark brown from blonde requires that you dye the blonde hair RED first. Yes, red. If you're going light brown use a golden or light auburn color. It fills the shaft with a base color for the brown to lay on. First you dye with the filler color, rinse, and dry. Second you apply the brown color of your choice over the red/golden/auburn color. I promise, it works. Anyone who needed this information.. You're welcome and happy hair coloring! Ps: Brad Mondo has some great videos explaining the mechanics in detail on his RUclips. There's also great articles online by searching Google.
I don't know who you are but you're doing the Lord's work with this comment. Let the people know! I do hair consultations and let me tell you (although you already know haha)- the amount of people who've messed up their hair through DIY coloring is insane.
@@karmakameleon113 Unfortunately I'm one of those hair disaster stories. Lesson learned a little late, but better late than never. I don't wish my hair disaster on anyone. It looked brown in low light, but in the sun in looked this sickly, nasty, greenish color. What a nightmare! I paid big $$ to a colorist to get it fixed. Thankfully this wonderful professional explained everything I did wrong & how to avoid this happening in the future. It worked beautifully too when I finally felt comfortable doing my own hair years & years later. Best of luck to those brave enough to experiment on their hair. Sometimes it's a wonderful experience, sometimes you end up with muddy, green, ugly, splotchy hair. If you are left with any hair at all! Oh boy, I've seen that too. Watched a close friend ignore my advice & TRIPLE PROCESSED her already damaged hair. Total ramen noodles for hair. Falling out everywhere. It's a science & an art. Sometimes ppl forget that.
i combed my locs out two years ago and it’s the best decision i’ve ever made. But with this process you have to be patient. You have to use a rat tail comb and water and conditioner ( A LOT ). It took me 8 days also.
I combed mine out summer of 2014/15? Water conditioner mix and a rat tail comb. Took a month and that fro looked so good and kinky 😍 loccing my hair up again I’m so excited
Were you in the third segment? loved your look after you cut them as well as with your locs!!! I have cut my locs four times because i have tricholilomania, but i do miss it at times... I was one who trimmed them first before cutting as well, it is easier that way, methinks...
I did it and I’m currently in the process to restart my loc process. My hair is too thick and I don’t want to fight with it. Reminded me all too well why I loc’d my hair in the first place. Lesson learned.
I had locs for 9 years then I combed them out. I had 120 locs it took me a month. PROCESS: I cut the ends off. I used a conditioner and water mix. I dipped my loc into the water mixture, squeezed out the excess water and used a rat tail comb (the one with the metal at the end) and took my time to detangle my hair. My hair was bra strap length after I was finished. Just take your time. I still have my hair so if I decide to loc it back I will use my own hair to do it.
I had mine from when I was 5-about 14 when I went to HS. They were mid back length. I tried combing them out first but then I realized how much hair I was losing and cut them to about that point then finished. With the help of my sister it took about a week of constant work, a rat tail comb, and VO5 conditioner! I’ll loc back up when I get older but I enjoy the versatility I have for right now.
I did it few years ago. I had to use a pastry fork because i broke 3 combs on the process. My head was horrible after that and my natural curl never recovered, it looked like steelwool, so a year later I cut my hair so short to let it grow healthy.
I cut and combed my locs 5 years ago and it was a very heartbreaking decision. Unfortunately, they were simply too heavy and long for my head (they were down to my waist). I have rocked my natural type 3a/b hair even since, but damn i miss my locs! Might consider getting them again some day..
My parents loc my hair as a baby and I combed it out when I turned 18, took me 1 whole yr and got really short… I’m 26 now and my natural hair is under my boob now, never went bk to locs and I’m happy with that❤

I combed out my locs. Put sisterlocs in and no regrets. Mind you they were comb coils and budding at 6 months. The loctitian at the time used a rat comb and kept breaking my hair, then wanted to cut ✂️ it to even it out. I was upset understandably. Took my mom my aunt plus friend at the salon 3 hours lots of conditioner too. Mind you in Africa 🌍 tooo.. I am happy the sisterlocs I got. I am on 1 year 4 months and will never ever comb em out.
I combed out my dreadlocks 14 years ago. They were beautiful. I had bad dreams about not having my locks. It took me 3 years before I put them back in. I did it dry and only used a thin comb. I've had my new locks for 11 years now .
I thought about it when I had locks. After 14 years of having them, I simply let my roots grow out a bit and cut them off. I rocked a curly ‘fro for awhile, then started going to a barber again. Now, I keep my hair short, curly, and platinum blonde.
I wore locs for the year of 2020 and then combed them out in 2021. In March of this year I installed microlocs and then combed them out micro locs for knotless braids in August only to get loc’d up again in October.
I combed all my locs out a around Christmas 2021. I had 200 locs, they had been in for over 2 years, and it took me 1-2 hours per loc. I'm really happy I did it. I ended up with hip length hair, but I cut it back to armpit length. I nourashed it back to health, and now it's waist length again. I was shocked at the state of my hair after combing them out. My hair just didn't want to hold a curl. I had crazy shrinkage and frizzy hair. It took a few months before it behaved like normal again. I made the right decision for me 100%
I combed out my locs last year. I used a rat tail comb(metal tipped) and conditioner; during the process, I would spritz my hair with water just so it could absorb the conditioner a little better. Overall, it took me a good couple of weeks to comb them out of my hair entirely.
It took a week. It can be done. Pace yourself. Have a plan. I lost alot of hair..but refused to cut them. Water & (affordable) Detangler Conditioner..use the RIGHT comb. 40-50 locs via gel & wax.
I combed out my almost three year old locs in Jan. 2022. I was going thru a lot and decided to comb them out. I don’t know how people get theirs out so fast, took me about 2 months on and off. I will definitely be getting my second set of locs soon, I can’t wait because I truly miss them
I've combed out my locs on 2 separate occasions, but I regretted it within a year both times. It was like a 3 day long process taking my locs out both times.
I remember being at a burger restaurant directly after my wash and set. And the young lady who served me admired my hair. I told her about my journey and she said ‘I was thinking about getting locs to comb them out for the hair growth.’ And I was like 😵💫🙅🏾♀️ nah chill. I told her that I was blessed to not have damaged my hair too much and retained my length. But I was like don’t go into with that mindset. You’ll hate them. And then there’s no guarantee that once combed out it will be the ‘hair you dreamed it would.’ Combing them out is a difficult decision…at least it was with me. It took me 3 weeks to comb out my 77 locs. I liked my locs A LOT. But I didn’t love them. I didn’t really get the style I wanted, so I figured I should comb them out and try again. But my pre-loc shoulder length hair is now half way down my back. The locs might lose this fight. I’ll try again when I hit 40. 😂
Hairdresser here, I take care of lots of mats Because I am curl focused! Hair gets tighter when you wet it, having straight conditioner is best but the real product to use is definitely a comb, a bag, and a brush. Braid each free section as well. I wouldn't actually recommend straight conditioner either btw, just Incase anyone reads my comment. I would recommend detangler, it isn't going to over soften your hair or make it brittle from to much keratin. If you are healthy haired individual and not color/ chemically altered you can get away with a bit to much moisture or keratin products but for those who have lightened their hair specifically, be very very careful with those pieces of hair as they are much more brittle and cannot have to much or to little of each, so having high end products (not expensive, just ingredient wise very clean and straight to the point like she's moisture and Cantu, or the new clean beauty line from Paul Mitchell) if you have blond-i-fied yourself then I would very much recommend gentler shampoos and shampooing twice as well as using a conditioner that is also a leave in so you don't have to fully rinse your hair at the end, great for the curly folks
Combed out my locks twice. The first time was a breeze. The second one was 😭😭. I ended up cutting them off. The first set of locks didn't have any build up. I only used oils. The second one I used gel , oils and different products. I think that had something to do with the takedown.
I would rather keep mine. We go through too much to cultivate them into what we want them to be. Definitely not knocking anyone that wants to comb them out. I had to cut my first set for work purposes years ago. Now that I'm on my second set, I want to keep them as long as possible.
I had em for 3+ years. It took me a few commitmted weeks.. but I used a pen. I miss em, but I was done. I had nearly knee length, locks took it up it to shoulder, but after it was mid back, I like it being short now.
After 7.5 years, I combed my locs out back in 2018. Took me 5 full days. I pretty much stuck my locs in a bottle of conditioner and combed them out with a rat tail comb. It is not for the weak or impatient, but it is possible.
I've cut off a few before in order to split larger ones into two but I actually just cut my hair about half to 3 qrtrs off to lose old, dead hair/energy. Locs grow so fast, so im not afraid to. It's like getting a new style and let it start fresh.

I cant explain how much I've missed my locs since I combed them out last year
I think we need to remember that locs or not, we always have days and phases where our hair is just annoying us or not cooperating. We just need to be think thoroughly about our next steps. 😅
I TRIED to comb mine out after about maybe 8 years, gave up & grab the scissors real quick. 😅🤣
😂
2022 was the year I realised you could comb dreads out. When I had mine more than 20 years ago, I just shaved it all off.
You're a badass ❤❤❤
I combed mine out summer of 2014/15? Water conditioner mix and a rat tail comb. Took a month and that fro looked so good and kinky 😍 loccing my hair up again I’m so excited
never saw Gunther laugh so much.. Tay is hilarious tho
13 YEARS LATER I'M SO GLAD THAT I NEVER WENT THROUGH WITH THIS
Thank you for including me in your video! I had around 500+ in total before starting the combing out process and it was a challenge for real! 😂
It looks like a challenge, your locs were so beautiful long and small. I can only imagine pulling out so much! You were dedicated!
Were you in the third segment? loved your look after you cut them as well as with your locs!!!
I have cut my locs four times because i have tricholilomania, but i do miss it at times...
I was one who trimmed them first before cutting as well, it is easier that way, methinks...
@@fedoramcclaren4294 I was the last one. And I’m sorry about that ! 💗
@@mahoganiej
I thank you kindly dear, and yes, you looked stunning with both styles!!!... 💜
I appreciate the look bruh fr 🙏🏾‼️
I definitely combed my hair out dry. It was way more easier than wet. It took me 4 days to take out 43 locs. Now I’m 8 months locd again
I cut mine because I lost one and saw how much build up and instantly wanted to cut em and start over.
@Cameo I was putting too many products in my hair and not cleansing my hair correctly
I did it few years ago. I had to use a pastry fork because i broke 3 combs on the process. My head was horrible after that and my natural curl never recovered, it looked like steelwool, so a year later I cut my hair so short to let it grow healthy.
Yes! It's wanting the natural curls and the fro! Boom!
My sister combed her locs out and it took her a few days. Hers were long but, she still had soo much hair on her head afterwards.
5:48 I’m from south Florida and back in middle school like 2006-2009 the original “wicks “ was what she got on her head no cap .. looks 🔥🔥🔥
I cut and combed my locs 5 years ago and it was a very heartbreaking decision. Unfortunately, they were simply too heavy and long for my head (they were down to my waist). I have rocked my natural type 3a/b hair even since, but damn i miss my locs! Might consider getting them again some day..
I’ve done it, best decision ever cuz I have started them over and now I love them even more ❤
My parents loc my hair as a baby and I combed it out when I turned 18, took me 1 whole yr and got really short… I’m 26 now and my natural hair is under my boob now, never went bk to locs and I’m happy with that❤
im obsessed with his hair, if I would have locs like that I would make that life-long commitment
Me too, his look light and fluffy
I’m white. Never had dreads. Never will. (Don’t know if it’s even possible lol) But it was soooo satisfying to watch. All people in this video have such cool hairstyles.
It is possible it's literally just matted hair in different sections and styles it'll just take longer for you since you have fine hair but it can be done. Ive seen many white guys with locs.
@@Im.A.Potatoe Oh thank you for clarifying. But I think when you try to comb it out they will break much much more than thick hair?!
Don't get them, it don't look right. Don't care how it's done.
@@nishiaboo7583 bruh 🤦🏾♂️
@@Pissbaby991 just being honest. It doesn't. 🤣
"Goldie Locks" was Adorable and Hilarious 😂 Love her ❤️ !!!
I had the thought of doing it.
BUT i realized i only wanted to do that bc i had writers block. So i stopped working on the book i was working on. Finished writing a children’s book and interlocked my hair lol.
Sorry for this being so long winded
You felt that cutting ur hair would bring forth new creativity?
@@woodenxyz8688 lol no. But doing something different or drastic with my hair has been my go to when i either feel out of control or need clarity.. Ig in a way yeah 🤦🏽♀️
@@woodenxyz8688 see when you say it out loud it sounds very silly
@@nytashakay8994 it may sound a bit silly but I understand, sometime it takes a big change to clear ones mind, most people are scared of change, so to have done it many time over, I give you props.
@@woodenxyz8688 lol well thanks. It helps most of the time. Though I’m trying to get out of being that drastic
I just combed my locs out and it turn out good 😊 and I had them in for 9 months
Her sister locks were really cute. I wonder why she wanted to comb them out
I tried to comb out my 15yr old locs. I gave up 4hrs later and shaved my head instead.
Starting over for thicker jumbo locs in 6 months.
I combed mines out in one day 🙌🏾🙌🏾 I started mines myself and I didn’t have any clean/straight parts 🤦🏾♀️ I started my loc journey in May..I was 8 months in but imma get them re-started by someone else..I also wanted mines to be a lil bigger than what i had
Coming it out with conditioner prevents a lot of tearing the hair out and damaging it so I recommend the conditioner it makes it slippery so the knots come out easier I try to do my daughter's dry and it it was just tearing half the lock off so I recommend conditioner
They are called locs.. not dread locs because the hair is not dreadful and the word dread locs was use by slave master to describe our hair as dreadful..so no they are beautiful locs in there own way
lol this ppl got dem "i wanna be cool and sexy locs" that's why they can comb it out. my wick damn near a decade and a half, only thing am combing out dem locs is lint😂
Been locking over 20 years. Now, I like them cut into a style. Wearing a long bob. Love it!! It was a big decision.
i thought about it at 3 months locked ended up doing it about 6 months ago it was surprisingly easy cuz my hair is thicker i guess
Your hair wasn’t even really fully locked then lol that’s why it was easy
6:53 365x50=18250 pieces of hair falling out each year
I did this year. Lol Took me 3 days. I had issues with conditioner and water. Dry was the way to go. I only had about 30 locs. But Jesus. Lol
Yoo, any tips? I got about 30 too and i wanna comb em out next week
@@jamieguapoStart with your thickest ones first or start back to front. Energy is gonna drastically go down having your arms up for ever. So starting with the though ones and or ones you can see is easiest. Do your absolute best to not tug on any. I ended up loosing 3 locs from that. Dry worked best for me but experiment with conditioner and or water. Oh this which is obvious, but take brakes often because your arm is gonna feel like it's about to fall off! 🤣 Don't over do it. 💜
@@blahquinnyblah thank you sooo much!!❤❤❤ ill take notes😂
If you bleach your hair, you have to dye it red before going back to brown/back. It won’t turn green or blue that way.
I was stunned to learn that this was even a thing. I just assumed you'd have to just buzz & start again!
THe girly with the blonde tips is so freaking PRETTY omg
*Took me about a week to comb mine out (2 years loc'd). I wanted to grow my Mohawk sides out. I'll be restarting my locs this Spring/Summer once my sides are the length I want.*
My grandma combed out mine when i was younger
I combed out my dreadlocks 14 years ago. They were beautiful. I had bad dreams about not having my locks. It took me 3 years before I put them back in. I did it dry and only used a thin comb. I've had my new locks for 11 years now .
I thought about it when I had locks. After 14 years of having them, I simply let my roots grow out a bit and cut them off. I rocked a curly ‘fro for awhile, then started going to a barber again. Now, I keep my hair short, curly, and platinum blonde.
You have to do what is right for you ❤
I wore locs for the year of 2020 and then combed them out in 2021. In March of this year I installed microlocs and then combed them out micro locs for knotless braids in August only to get loc’d up again in October.
I never knew you could comb your locs out. With that being said, I’m dying with my locs.
I recently combed out my locs since they were uneven. Went from 42 to at least 100. Gonna wait until they lock to count them.
I've combed out my locs twice. now on my 3rd set of locs and idk if i'll comb them out again. It's SO MUCH WORK!
Combed my 7 year locs out. I actually loved them but missed my loose natural hair.
I combed mine out and it took forever! I'm getting another set with smaller locs this month.
I will definitely be getting my second set of locs soon, I can’t wait because I truly miss them
Combing out sister locs is psychotic
I've combed out my locs on 2 separate occasions, but I regretted it within a year both times. It was like a 3 day long process taking my locs out both times.
After shanty cut her hair, she looked like the little white doll that Maggie played with on the Simpsons
I really miss just rocking hairstyles sometimes so the thought crosses at least once a day
Bra why you not at a mill yet. U deserve it gang. Been my mr miyagi for my whole journey my G. Stay up🙏🏾
Good observation! Cosmetology school teaches to manipulate hair at 80% dry bc wet hair is too pliable and very easy to break👏🏽
A+
I'ma comb out my free form locks
I'm in the process of coming my locks out now. I got all the front done working on the back now.
Oh man not to cook sis, i immediately though of the angelica doll from rugrats😂😂😂
I had em for 3+ years. It took me a few commitmted weeks.. but I used a pen. I miss em, but I was done. I had nearly knee length, locks took it up it to shoulder, but after it was mid back, I like it being short now.
Took 2 weeks to comb mines out, just did the last one on 11/26/22 back to my natural hair and I had a lot of growth.
After 7.5 years, I combed my locs out back in 2018. Took me 5 full days. I pretty much stuck my locs in a bottle of conditioner and combed them out with a rat tail comb. It is not for the weak or impatient, but it is possible.
yo, its time for another self reflection of your journey. your locs are looking better than ever in this video.
I've cut off a few before in order to split larger ones into two but I actually just cut my hair about half to 3 qrtrs off to lose old, dead hair/energy. Locs grow so fast, so im not afraid to. It's like getting a new style and let it start fresh.
I used two aloe plants to comb my locs out. It took a week. That was my third time combing my locs out. Enjoyed the journey but I prefer big full hair
