yo i started mine bac in dec 2016 after watching your vids. now they are to my chest. even did two 4 dread congos, and put every other 2 together. man thanks. the journey has been awesome.
Started mine back in nov of 21 with jamaican castor oil, rip twist method( worked really well with my adhd lmao I would do this for hours a day), and using rosewater with cinnamon mint loc spray to help with the itch and dandruff. I also only washed my hair once a month but put water on my hair every other day. After 4-5months I went to a local loc artist and have been going for once a month she said for how thin/straight my hair is, they loc'd up pretty well within 6months but like they always say you gotta look ugly before you look beautiful.
ordered the loc bundle a few days ago and i’m ecstatic! really appreciate the videos, because of you i’m finally ready to start my locs!! thank you Gunther!
A tip for anyone who likes the crochet but there’s a big spot you’re having trouble with locking or you have bigger locs; use a 3 pronged crochet needle!!!! Changed my life😅😂😂
My son is a 3b hair type & he wants to start locs. I'm super excited cuz I've had mine since 2018 & I love mine! We're waiting until his hair gets a little bit longer, but thank you for sharing your journey! I was nervous at first when he told me cuz Idk how I would be able to start locs on his hair type 😅
I’m glad to say I’m getting dreads in 2 days and I’ve been waiting so long for them I’m going with that crochet method and interlocking at the root cause I feel like that’s better for more active people yk so ya :)
@@nasceer9038 yes I’ve had them for almost 3 months love them all I have to do is wash them maybe once or twice a week but still let it get wet every time I take a shower sleep with a Bonet and ya it’s all said and done and I don’t regret one bit 👍💯💪🏾
I started with crochet hooks but I started freeforming around a year into my locks and I have my locks since 4 years now. And my hair is super straight so there is no hair type restriction to freeforming
How did you do it? I also have super straight hair I got my dreads 10 months ago with crochet hook too but they doesn't look as I would like and I can't wash my hair as much I would like
Ive wanted to have dreadlocks since i was in 9th standard......Right now im in the first year of college and I've finally started my dreads journey on march went from an inch long hair (crown area only) to hairs as long as they almost were to my chin in almost 6months.... I sure have to say onr thing, that is, though i had a dream of getting dreads for the past 4 years but watching your videos was the only boost to my urge to get dreads. I am 2c hairtype and i used twist and rip along with crochet hooking for a clear looking head and i think the perfect hair length to start dreads would be if your hairs from your crown area reach your nose. Any more length than that is perfect for starter locks and Personally i would suggest crochet hooking only.....no gel, no product just wet hairs and within a day you can get dreads at home.
can you do a video about best ways to retwist/gain length from new growth for ur locs, for example what’s better retwisting with gel or using the interlock tool
best way is rub-n-rip. u take a section, rub the strands together between ur fingers, then pull the strands apart, allowing the tangles to be pushed down towards the scalp. instant locs. only need to tie the ends off for the thinnest straightest hair. given so many friends locs like this thatve lasted years
So over the course of maybe 8 months I just washed my hair, did a rough dry with a towel and over time... my hair just started to lock up. I am half Dominican (I look white) and my hair is extremely curly and frizzy, when I used to maintain my hair it would just stick up like an afro in all directions. But not nearly 2 years later my hair is pretty much just naturally locked up except in the front. I am glad I found this video because I am gonna buy a crochet hook and see if I can help the front out a bit. The issue that I am having is since its really just naturally locked, the sections are pretty much set, some are THICK and some are thinner :/ alot of them are surprisingly even.. I feel like all the odd shapes looks unique but also kinda dumb, I feel like I am gonna be judged.
I feel like hair textures in between loose curls and tight curls (3b-3a) are the most versatile. I love ur hair cuz it has more of that curly look when it's not mature which looks awesome, with mine (4b-4c) it's kinda boring and predictable. Ur locs now with ur 3c hair look different different to your last set, mine would look the same. I fw ur dreads Gunther keep growing ✊🏾
I see the two strand twists are a lot similar to rope braids except a lot tighter, I’m obsessed with doing rope braids for some reason I felt I had to mention this.
Yea. I’m completely white. My hair is super straight. And I’m 38 and my hair is starting to thin compared to what it was when I was younger. I keep trying everything from free form to back combing and my hair just does not dread. At one point I had someone use a crochet hook to make dreads in my hair but instead of looking like yours did in the video mine looked much thinner and had really long whispy undressed ends. If I’d tried to blunt the tips but tucking those ends in my hair would have lost half its length. Already as it was my hair went from down my back to chin length just from the crochet hook. I ended up shaving my head last year and growing it back out. It’s around 6 or 7 inches now but I feel like it would need to be at least double that to get decent dreads. There’s this guy on RUclips named Fabian Pacheco and his hair went from being down to like his waist to barely chin length just from back combing. Doesn’t give me much hope at 6-7 inches
Your videos are extremely helpful I wanted dreads now for the past three years, I bought myself a starter kit and everything I need to get started a lot of people have been telling me that I should go to a professional but I feel confident enough to do it myself I also practised on synthetic hair what is your thoughts of someone doing dreads on themselves for the first time ? ( I only want 6-8 dreads)
Also straight hair has a chance of ending up one massive dirty lock so free form for us may not be the best but hey do what you want and cut it if it dose not work out then start again.
That's what I was thinking, I remember as a teenager struggling with my hair matting at the nape of my neck due to my brushing technique being bad, and there was no question of it forming into nice separate locks, just a big knotty ball of pain. If I left it unbrushed it would not form into anything that would be wearable or healthy for my scalp. I have mostly straight, slightly wavy hair. I think the freeform thing must only work with specific hair types.
If I do finger coils with gel and then crochet hook it a little later (I just don’t have the time to instant lock it right now 😂) would that also be fine?
Need at free form tutorial I have like either 3a to 3c curl/coil pattern. I think idk tbh I need help. That’s why I come here my guy, fw the content btw
My man has wanted to start his loc journey since I met him almost 4 years ago, but it’s just to damn expensive but I’ve been trying to learn how to loc so I can do it for him, he also has a mixture of 3b/3c hair but in the front of his head his hair has the texture of about 4a/4b, he’s mixed and so is his hair, but personally I think the comb twist would look really neat and clean, especially if the sections are clean. For someone with mixed hair like him, how long would you advise he wait to wash his hair after getting the gel comb twists?
one week. think of the OLD ways of people..they lived near water so they I deed touched water every day almost. so...honestly using gel and his type hair..just twist, gel, wash every 3 or 4 days and retwist.after abkut a week the hair will be so used to beinf twisted that it'll try to stay that way
Good stuff. Thanks for all the tips. I'm a natural red head and I'm going to try your methods on my beard and mohawk. Also going to be putting in some Celtics/ viking style beads. I'll send you a pictures if it's all works out the way I want lol
Itsssss lookin like the twist out method is gonna be the most predictable for my 8 nation mixed hair type 😂 all my grandparents parents were mixed we go from Czechoslovakia to China crossing over Africa and pitstopping around the Islands chile 🤌🏼😂😂😂
Hello, I want to start dreading my hair and it is about 5 to 5 1/2 inch. I have already ordered the crochet needle and it is the same one you use. And I was wondering if you should twist your hair while you are poking your hair with the needle. Thank you
Thank you for this lol, i just moved to Alaska alone & i have no experience with dreads, very informal video. Currently looking into how to ship myself the hook & gel. (3c hair, 15/16” long) Do you think a person can do this alone? Or should I ask someone to help?
Quick question I have thin hair but I want instant locks. I also want that "full" look. If I instant lock, can I make really small parts to make the illusion of more hair? Also, will the dreads swell with instant locking?? I'm open to all wise advise because ya girl is confused....
Thanks, the only well explained video about dread was the question if I could freeform my hair, can you explain more about the freeform method please, hugs from Brazil 🇧🇷
