I can't believe I spent thousands of hours on my life staring at a GBC screen with no back light.
I can bet it's more beautiful memory than the ones your making now tho? Gaming wise ofcourse
@@shanewright2213 I have to agree it is ... but why??
@@braves4life25 add it to the list of lifes questions. Don't worry as an adult you'll get use to it. Sequels are games that's trying to capture that feeling that once was. I think it has to do with our innocence or scientifically Dopamine production was off the charts I don't know why people want to seperate the word "innocence" and the ability to finally explain it.
Me too but on a gba (1st one)
I COULD do this, but I would have to use my backlit GBA-SP to retain any sanity. I do have a lot of GB/GBC games though, so it could be a fun month.
Did it an entire summer in the 90's; interesting purposely recreating the experience today.
Lmfao word me too wish I recorded it
Same. That, with Super Mario Bros Deluxe. I also had blue, my older brother, Red. We had to share the same Gameboy Color. Definitely had hardships back then haha.

Gameboy was my childhood... That and game gear.

"The idea of limiting myself to only playing one console has always interested me"
*laughs in only having one console*
Get a pc and you have all
*playing only 1 console
*Having only 1
Put "only" in the right spot in the sentence!
@@theannoyedmrfloyd3998 Still makes sense in that order since you are in fact "only playing" one console and none other
Who wants to play Gameboy games on their PC isn’t their appeal being Portable???
@@MrTenInHell Get a laptop then
The idea of using a supposedly torturous challenge to introduce the younger generations to the old games and hopefully make them enjoy some of these classics is absolutelly brilliant.
Torturous challenge? Only one system to play, oh noes!?! lol. When I was a little kid, one point after our NES broke in early 90's, all I had was Sonic The Hedgehog Tiger handheld for a while. That's real torture.
Games aren't re-released because they've "aged better", they're re-released because they were popular.
There are a lot of otherwise good games that won't get that treatment due to being overshadowed, licensing, or the company going under, so there is merit in being 'forced' to explore a system's library.
I’m only 14 and I have always respected the older things in life especially things from the 1900s-2000s, and not gonna lie I like older games more than newer games because of the feeling of nostalgia and it feels nice to play games that impacted the pop culture community and gaming community
@Default Man idk man all he said was that the prospect of digging into an older library such as the game boy should be viewed with an open mind rather than as an ultimately challenging experience. I think that's like the opposite of gatekeeping man
@Default Man r/ihavereddit
I'm telling Nintendo you used a save state
If they come after me I’m coming after YOU
Wait for real?!?

Older Pokémon games are hard to get into?
It’s the only ones I can get into 😲
Yeah Gen 1 and 2 are the ones I find myself playing the most and I never owned then until the VC releases on 3DS
Cant relate, all the pokemon game are op lol even rom hacks... injustice downloaded Light Platinum two days ago great rom hack I say.
The older ones are the best. A lot of people complain about the restricted technology of the Gameboy but I really loved the games
How about that
I tried a new Pokémon game and it was so ridiculously easy that I got bored and stopped playing
Young millenials really making challenges out of my everyday life as a child. Wild.
I still play game boy games on a 3ds (since a game boy is so expensive and the limited cartridge batteries) they released a bunch of game boy games on the 3ds eshop so theyre much easier to play now
These challenge things just sound so silly
I mean he explicitly said it’s not a child because he grew up with it, he just wanted to go back to it
Literally said he bought the games new and the Gameboy, he isn't a kid lol
Truth. I was born in 89. I pretty much had a Game Boy since I was born. I spent large chunks of my time doing nothing but playing Game Boy. Even more when you add in Game Boy Color and Advance.
I STILL play Game Boy games all the time. I either do it on my re-shelled GBA SP 101 with a flash cart, or my emulation handheld. I still have my original grey brick and Pokemon Gold GBC, but playing on them without a backlit screen is just annoying more than fun. And I somehow don't have any of the the millions of worm lights I used to have.
One day I'll have the money to buy myself a pre-modded GBC with a nice screen on it. Maybe even get one with a rechargeable battery because why not?
sounds like a damn good month
For 2022 I set myself the challenge of only playing 3DS games to try and clear my backlog. Here we are at the start of November and not only have I stuck to that challenge, but I have managed to finish 30 games on my 3DS! Gonna have one final push in the next two months to finish as many more as I can before opening up my options again and playing on whatever platform I feel like.
Most impressive part of this video is how you’ve managed to keep all of your games/ gameboy and everything so immaculate. Beautiful.
It is so nostalgic. Gameboy was the first one my father used to play that I played.
07:09 "Mi-SING-no" is certainly an odd way of saying it, I'll give you that.
Thats how i say it too
@@elijah1110 I called it Missing No. Because I knew it meant "missing number"
@@TofuCate that's like old runescape players using "lobbys" or "skellys" IRL. That always made me angry. Just say the word! Lol
@@SPITZtheGOD but seriously lobbys were THE food in runescape. Wish I had enough fishing and cooking level.
Loved seeing your pets in the video! So cute
Haha I’m glad you enjoyed them! I plan on doing more live action stuff in the future so maybe you’ll get to see more of them
I liked how the puppies looked at your Gameboy like "what's that?"
I will never feel like 10 year old me playing Super Mario Land again. That enthusiasm for most thing is gone.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
2DS virtual console has reconnected me with that feeling.
Damn this comment got me in the feels
I'm 32 years old. I still play through and beat Super Mario Land at least a couple times a year.
Just putting out there: you can change the color palette in the super gameboy. There's a array of color combos and even the gameboy palettes.
Love how youtube recommends this for me 10 months later
RUclips suck
Nice video, I can totally relate with the need to focus on media. My backlog is super messy and I often find myself playing dozens of games at once. I've also been meaning to get into Game Boy collecting, I think it would be pretty fun.
This might actually be the push I needed, so thanks for that.
Nice I’m glad more & more are doing that one month Challenge, it really gives you a different perspective when your playing as a child & now where your slightly more developed.
Idk why, but those original art for pokemon made me really miss my grandparents
Me too
Thanks for this video you actually unlocked a deep memory i havent thought about in probably 20 years with that Donkey Kong 94 footage. It was one of the first games i ever had. I was 6 years old when that game came out and was one of my first on gameboy I must have played the first few levels hundreds of times but must have lost or gotten rid of that cartridge long long ago. As soon as i saw that footage i got so nostalgic and my brain just started resurfacing a ton of memories at my grandmas house in the early 90s and i just pulled out my 3DS and brought the virtual console version. Thanks again!!
bro i remember when i had my gameboy color and it was finessed by my cousin that i just met the same day he stole it ;-;
damn....
bro my neighbor looked through her closet and found an original never opened game boy.
@@bobross613 If that still ain't open, that is worth a pretty penny 💲
Bro where he at let's square up
Did u get it back!?
Love your in depth and commentary for this video. Im doing this myself after I watched this. For gba for two weeks straight no other games. Great video
This is the first video that I’ve seen from you. It’s insightful with relatable perspectives, and comedic perspective I can relate to. Def giving you a follow
Awesome stuff man. I can see the amount of work you've put into your vids. Love it!
Great video man, really entertaining! I love GBC! GBA was always my favorite though lol
Your cat is so adorable! 🥰
This video has a very nice mellow vibe. Enjoyed the Gameboy music in the background.
Really good video. I loved my Gameboy growing up, such a fantastic library
ngl seeing you have maltese dogs kept me watching the video ❤️ (they're very special to me)
and i kept watching because this is a cool video and a fun idea!! i have a hard time focusing on media, too, just because there are so many choices now; i ought to try something like this
I didn't have a Game Boy when I was a kid but somehow this still triggers some serious nostalgia.
I want to try this myself someday.
First time running into any of your vids. I liked this one.
I just found this video, I’ve had the same trouble, I see myself buying game after game for all of my consoles start it, play it for about an hour and drop it forever.
I’m not finished watching the video but I’m going to try something similar to this, so far great video. Subscribed !
I’m the same way
I enjoyed the video, so much I spent 4 hours looking for a modded Gameboy color and pulled the trigger. I usually deal with same problem on finishing things and attention span so I figured why not try it as well, got myself a GBC in that awesome atomic purple with Pokémon Crystal! thank you for the content, it really does inspire.
I want to get a modded GBC one day. I have an original GBC actually, but I don't want to mod it since it's one of those fancy Pokemon Gold ones. But money is keeping me from getting one. I did recently spend a chunk of money on an emulation handheld (the Retroid Pocket 2+), but I felt like in the long run, the Retroid would be a better value for the price. It was still cheaper than a pre-modded GBC, and I can play anything from Atari 2600 to Dreamcast (even PS1, PSP, and DS).
But I'm definitely gonna get one one day. For now, if I want to play on real hardware, I have a GBA SP 101 and some flash carts.
Nobody defending Yoshi? When I was a soldier, even 25 years after the game came out, we used to have tournaments on that game in our dorms. Say what you want but it’s an absolute classic.
Yoshi is evil
7:14 The "Missingno" actually stood for missing number, just a little fun fact there lol.
Lol everyone knows that
@@Shmeve0 I don't know if the uploader knew judging by how he pronounced the name (Mis-ING-no)

I just bought dragon quest 1 and 2. I've heard great things. I also love how clean your game boy looks!
Great vid. Great gb colorway. Nice cat n dogos
Hey thanks so much!
Yeah do it again I love Gameboy and wish there was more video of people using them in modern times rather than just straight review of the actual Gameboy
I'm really enjoying these videos. Wish you could do one for Gameboy Advance! So many fun and colorful games on there.
This vid deserves a lot more views
Thank you🥺
@Airock the Great ROFL
@Airock the Atheist being Amish isn't a challenge, literally
I love the game boy
Love watch this kind of stuff, nice video!
This should be a challenge.
I growed up with the Game Boy line of consoles.
Tecnically speaking i never stopped to play Game Boy games since the early 90's.
The Game Boy consoles was my nearly only way to play games until the early 2000's.
And until now i never really stopped to play Game Boy games also thanks to a flash Game Boy Advance cartridge called EZ-Flash IV Omega.
You inspire me to do the same with various different consoles!
I'm gonna have a month of Game Boy too, as well as a month of SNES, a month of Gamecube etc. Not back to back of course, but some time. :)
Aah! So much memories! I remember being 6 when i got the gameboy color and Link's awakening as a birthday gift. Btw, where did you get that case? It looks cool!
I got the case at a garage sale when I was a kid! I'm sure you could find one on ebay today though :)
Some of the music has been heard in little snippets in later games, for example: Winning the roshambo games in Paper Mario: Color Splash will play a short melody inspired by the ending theme of Super Mario Land, specifically when it picks up and goes faster.
this seems like a really fun and cool concept. i might try this with gba or nds
3:20 bro, the secret platform is on the other side :D there are two of these secret areas, one has the block where you were looking for it, and the other has it under the leftmost gap :)
I haven't played Mario Land in almost 30 years, and I was shouting this at my screen. The weird parts of old games you remember...
I was trying to tell him under the far left gap but he didn't hear me. 😅
This was such a great, silly, self aware video. Made me wanna get my GBC back out. 100% subbing can’t wait to see more from u!
Overstatement
@@yuvyx3288 lol someone says “I like this” and you respond “nah you don’t” 🤔
Nice video! I would totally play the Super Nintendo for one month! So many great games.

I had a game boy pocket growing up and I absolutely loved it. Kind of a shame it’s considered a “challenge” to play for just a month lol great vid man 👍🏽✌🏽
Great video! You should do the Gameboy Advance now!
Oh man. That brings back memories. Hundreds of hours on Pokémon gen 1 and 2, Megaman Xtreme and Wario Land and Golden Sun ❤️
that final fantasy adventure music at the end hit my soul!
That's the kind of video I appreciate!
5:24 one of your dogs looks at the other dog for reassurance that the game boy was harmless haha awesome
Oh, that weird case with the clear front! 😳 I forgot about that thing. This and my caselogic cd player holder were crucial
I love this so much. Nostalgia is a fantastic feeling. 😍
This is a nostalgia trip
I am current watching the video, only saw 3 min by now i already know i wont regret watching it completely xD
Like for the sound that the GB made when he turned it on!!

Amazing video!
"the Gameboy is a portable that can easily fit in your pocket!"
OMG dude that thing always have been huge, unless you still have cargo pants there's not many pockets that would fit it nicely.
depends which model u have the older ones were huge but when the gb color came out they were all smaller
@@marshall1556 I remember more the GB Color, GB Pocket, OG Advance and SP, and I dare to say the only pocketable one is the SP!
TBH from every portable that I can remember IMO the only real pocketables were the GBA SP, GBA Micro, DS Lite and PSP Go.
@@andremalerba5281 I mean we were all younger so our clothes and pockets were smaller like just the other I put my gba in my pocket and it fit like a phone in ur pocket
JNCO Jeans were a thing.
Remember Southpole and Fubu Jeans etc...?! With those, not that big Problem 😂👍🏼
That barrel mini game in superstar saga was the best, i still boot up my gba sp to play it from time to time
Great video. You should try lock and chase. It's the definitive version in my opinion. Love that game.
It's a cool thing to experience to recreate simplier times
Thank you Guts with his grasses on
Glad you enjoyed :) I’m also always happy when people get my profile picture haha
The barrel game in Superstar Saga. I did know what you were talking about! We're officially friends!
Great and fun video. I wanted to try out a challenge like this but Everytime I thought about it I realized I don’t have the balls to do it lol
I remember when I was young I only had a game boy for like a year. I actually remember those times fondly
11:18 Didn't expect to see Mario chasing Yoshi with a hammer.
My dad gave me his old Gameboy Color, and I absolutely love it. Been playing Pokémon on it, fun time.
I sold my Retron 5 but man was it great, definitely recommend.
new title for a video i spent my whole summer living in the 80s or the 90s
After 20 years my gameboy color still works (although you have to flip the power switch slowly now)
Its been dropped, thrown, drowned, stolen 2x’s, confiscated, and left in a basement for years, but its still here
Gameboys were built like tanks my gba sp has been droped and peed on by cats ( I gave it a huge dis infecting treatment) and it still works no screen rot or anything but my ds is not so lucky the hinges on it doesn't work as well and it has screen rot.
I remember using the Missingno. Glitch in Blue but it was in Cinnabar Island (?) And I would always try to get x999 rare candies 😅
Yea my cousin introduced me to that also.... it how I got my pokemon ready for the pokemon league back then.. then I used his level 80 mewtwo to wipe the the whole league lol
I know it’s 11 month later but I’d love to see another one of these
Is ti just me, or does he sound exactly like Shia LaBeouf? Love the video!
Aaah,what a breeze t watch. Thank you!
That's the exact Gameboy I got for Christmas back in 99' with the pikachu yellow version!!! Oh the nostalgia!!! 😂😂😂
Interesting. I might do it myself sometimes!
Damn, I remember doing that almost a full year when out tv blew out back in the 90s.
So much nostalgia in this video... I remember Super Mario Land... in fact I hate it the first time I played it because I ordered a a Christmas gift but I was expecting Mario Land 2. And for me Donkey Kong Land was perfect, but the things that you’re saying are true,
I started another spring semester of college yesterday, and I'm already out of it. I might pick up my sister's gameboy games she has somewhere in the house. Just to have some simpler games to play, and just to take my mind off my studies for a bit each day.
What I love about the GameBoy Color right now is the fact that it doesn’t have a backlight which makes it easy on the eyes as opposed to backlight on the GameBoy Light/SP or modded systems. In retrospect, the worm light for the GameBoy Color was useful for car rides although I only played it when under a lamp or in the sun and I was never given a worm light as a kid because my parents were concerned I’d be up at night playing. GameBoy Color aside, I picked up reading books again as well especially since it’s so easy on the eyes compared to anything else in today’s standards.
Having just gotten my first Game Boy, I'm tempted to try this out too.
Not exactly the same but I finally got a custom GBA with backlight, also tempted to go a full month just on it
@@PSNMyfoot I have the GBA IPS screen coming in the mail 😁
I spends years on one as grew up with them. I was so happy once the SP came out as finally a backlight.
Bro I have the exact same cat toy as you as soon as I heard that noise I knew it haha
Good vid man. Have you thought about installing an IPS screen on this? I highly recommend it. Your eyesight will thank you lol. Another good option is to play on a GBA SP AGS OO1 or even better, 101. ✌🏾
Neat video!
Really awesome. Final Fantasy Adventure is a good one to try in the future.
Playing through Superstar Saga right now and I think I played that barrel game for over an hour when I found it. Sick reference
I love Yoshi!!! But that's ok. It's just really simple, and fun for a short burst playing
This video is so good!!!
Really feel like this didn’t cover enough ground for a month. Maybe a revisit to cover some more would be in order.
The GB screen drove me crazy as a kid it was only until years later when the DS came out that I actually enjoy portable games
Within August to now, I picked up a Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance SP, and I'm having one of the best gaming moments of my life. Also adorable cat ❤
I still cherish my first Gameboy classic... Did not have any handheld after this. But last year I got 2 gbc from Japan and refurbished them.
Yoshi's Cookie was one of my favorite games as a kid! :) Kirby's Dreamland too! Awesome bosses!
Same Donkey Kong story for me. The surprise of it becoming a giant game blew me away, played it every day till I beat it. The 64 moveset works stupidly well in 2D.
Extra kudos for ending your video with the opening theme to The Final Fantasy Adventure aka Seiken Densetsu
