After I've been watching the Bob Fosse Gwen Verdon movie series she was the mother of his daughter and she also helped him with a lot of his work and he just says my good friend Gwen Verdon if you see this series you'll know he would never been able to finish Cabaret without her,as always the woman is in that back seat,not in today's world 👍
He was a freaking genius, he totally deserved the oscar for directing Cabaret, his camera work and editing is impressive and way more creative than the classic approach of Coppola with The Godfather. DAMN I LOVE BOTH FILMS

Yep, two of my favourite pictures, perfect. Honourable mentions to boorman who did a superb job with deliverance, a film I admire more than love but it’s a real achievement, and Mankiewicz for sleuth, which is a superb piece of work, and underrated, lovely two hander and the interplay between Olivier and Caine is mesmeric. Over all though, fosse was a deserved winner, he brought something to the screen that was fresh, new and thoroughly innovative. He pushed it out even further with all that jazz, which is probably - outside of Von trier’s dancer in the dark - the darkest film musical ever

What a great year for directors. I love The Godfather. But... Cabaret is my favourite musical of all time, and that has to put at the feet of Fosse's direction.
I love Fosse's work just as much as i love his brilliance. But the least he could do was give a special shout out to his ex wife Gwen Verdon who helped him A LOT with his films even after their separation/his extramarital affairs. He said her name in such a hurried manner not giving her the proper credit she deserves. The woman had balls of steel for sticking up with him till the day he died. Truly the unsung hero.
I just read on Wikipedia and found out that Bob Fosse won two Tony, an Oscar and an Emmy in the same year for direction in plays, movies and television respectively.. No other director has achieved this feat..

Oscar got this right. Bob Fosse got the Oscar, and Coppola eventually earned his two years later. It would've been very unfair if Coppola won for both parts.
at the time there was no indication that godfather part 2 would be made. so the unfair question is irrelevant. this was a major upset. coppola won golden globe, and most importantly dga, and ended up losing to fosse at the oscars.
I love how there was no applause while reading the nominees, so none of them felt bad because they didn't get as much applause as another. The Oscars should go back to that tradition.

I haven't seen a lot of Bob Fosse Movies. I did see Cabaret years ago on Broadcast TV and I would love to see it again. I also thought "All That Jazz" was a great Movie. I think that is an Autobiographical Movie of Bob Fosse's Life. Am I correct about that?

Cabaret is my favorite Fosse musical, and I was able to bypass the R-rating and get into the movie theatre to take it all in more than once, when it was released. I wish we had a Fosse now and the kind of music that is right for the choreagraphy. What a genius he was, and so sensual and hot!

What many don´t know about the Godfather was that Frances Ford Coppola was under a very strict rules from the producers of that film. He did a remarkable job but I don´t think it was his directing that made the film as good as it was. Bob Fosee and co. pretty much did whatever they wanted when they did Cabaret. It was stunning, bad ass and ahead of its time even though it took place in the early 30s
Actually, Fosse did not do whatever he wanted. You heard him mention having disputes and one involved another Oscar recipient on that very evening. . .Fosse called the producers and informed them that he did not want Joel Grey in the film! Apparently, he did not wish to recast performers who'd done it on Broadway. When the producers refused to budge Fosse told them that it would either be Bob Fosse or Joel Grey but not the two of them. The producers replied: "Well, we're sorry but it will be Joel Grey, then!" There's more and I invite you to look it up!
Fosse had major issues with Cy Feuer. Manny Wolf, the ABC Pictures chair, was in LA and much more supportive. Feuer, who had worked with Fosse on Broadway before successfully (which makes it weirder), really gave him a hard time. Disputes over D.P., locations, lighting, etc. Really ugly. The people in LA, however, were more tolerant and supportive, which is also strange.
An amazing & fascinating man! All great things are always plucked away from this garden of humans. Next year will be 30 years since he crossed over. I hope there will b a Bob Fosse retrospective or marathon somewhere.

EARLY Fosse and he's as glorious as ever. The character he plays is so charming and sweet. His remarkable talent shines through as ever-and the story is light-hearted, funny, and very well-done. He choreographed all of the dance numbers- complete with the ever-present hat and jazz hands! If you haven't seen it, treat yourself to this one, it's amazing. I love his early work. I do hope you'll love it as much as I do! The *death* sequence in All That Jazz alone should have won a separate award! =)

'And a good friend of mine Gwen Verdon"....Fosse/Verdon brought me here. After watching that new show this year in 2019 (about the lives of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon) and hearing him thank Verdon as his "friend" made me cringe just a teeny bit.
Fosse must have been elated; he is winning over Coppola for The Godfather, Mankewicz for Sleuth, Boorman for Deliverance and other high caliber directorial work. He is receiving the award from George Stevens, the director of Shane, Giant, Gunga Din and A Place In The Sun.His life and career ended much too soon.
As far as being elated, Fosse checked himself into a mental hospital within two months of this, his third jewel in the triple crown of the entertainment industry. He spent his whole life battling depression, and he couldn't deal with the overwhelming and unprecedented success. His demons ended his life and career 14 years later.
I think Coppola and Fosse has a big rivalry. They would do battle again in 1979, with Apocalypse Now and All That Jazz going into battle with one another.

Meanwhile I’m just elated that Yan Troell was recognized for his brilliant The Emigrants (and her overlooked sister The New Land!). People mostly remember Ingmar from Sweden for a good reason yes but Yan also did such a magnificent job directing the movie. What a brilliant year for film.
Bob Fosse owed much of his success to Gwen Verdon. Her contributions to many of his projects are now well known. Gwen died in 2000 and Fosse in 1987. They were married from 1960 to 1987. His extramarital affairs put a strain on their marriage, and by 1971, Verdon and Fosse were separated, but never divorced.
That miniseries _Fosse/Verdon_ (2019) was history revisionism and exaggerated her contributions, reimagining her as the superwoman behind the man. After its release, several of their former colleagues came forward and refuted this.
Maybe most people nowadays believe that Francis should have won, but that doesn't mean that Bob didn't deserve it either, not by a long shot, 'cause his directing in that movie is truly truly brilliant and he also created an icon of cinema!!
Idk what is more shocking, Cabaret winning over Godfather or Kramer vs. Kramer winning over Apocalypse Now.... it Deer Hunter hadn’t come out the year before in 1978, Coppola, as we all know, would’ve won. ‘Cabaret” was an excellent film.But Fosse’s magnum opus as a director was “All That Jazz.”

Fosse must have been elated; he is winning over Coppola for The Godfather, Mankewicz for Sleuth, Boorman for Deliverance and other high caliber directorial work. He is receiving the award from George Stevens, the director of Shane, Giant, Gunga Din and A Place In The Sun.His life and career ended much too soon.
As far as being elated, Fosse checked himself into a mental hospital within two months of this, his third jewel in the triple crown of the entertainment industry. He spent his whole life battling depression, and he couldn't deal with the overwhelming and unprecedented success. His demons ended his life and career 14 years later.

I think Coppola and Fosse has a big rivalry. They would do battle again in 1979, with Apocalypse Now and All That Jazz going into battle with one another.
I must tell you i LOVE your headshot! You're so reminiscent of the 40s, absolutely one of my favorite periods in art! How fabulous to have seen Cabaret (the film) several times. Don't you agree it only becomes better the second time around? He was so driven, so humble, and SO BRILLIANT. His work was profoundly sensual yet never garish. Every move expressed a thought that drove the story forward. A suggestion: 'My Sister Eileen' w/Fosse, Janet Leigh, Jack Lemmon & Betty Garrett from 1955. (more)

LOL have u seen that year's Oscars? Sacheen Littlefeather accepted the award for Brando causing an outrage from the whites. The following year, a naked man ran across the stage. Vanessa Redgrave had a long POLITCAL acceptance speech from when she won Best Actress in '78. Jane Fonda's speech was interpreted in sign language HERSELF because the academy refused to have subtitles for the deaf. It was the 70's!
Coppola deserved the best director only because he changed the way mafia movies are made till date. Just for this new perception and courage he deserved it. Nothing against Bob fosse and the wonderful movie caberet.

Meanwhile I’m just elated that Yan Troell was recognized for his brilliant The Emigrants (and her overlooked sister The New Land!). People mostly remember Ingmar from Sweden for a good reason yes but Yan also did such a magnificent job directing the movie. What a brilliant year for film.
I love the film The Godfather but! I am glad Bob Fosse won in this category.. FFC won too many oscars... :-)
Bob Fosse owed much of his success to Gwen Verdon. Her contributions to many of his projects are now well known. Gwen died in 2000 and Fosse in 1987. They were married from 1960 to 1987. His extramarital affairs put a strain on their marriage, and by 1971, Verdon and Fosse were separated, but never divorced.
That miniseries _Fosse/Verdon_ (2019) was history revisionism and exaggerated her contributions, reimagining her as the superwoman behind the man. After its release, several of their former colleagues came forward and refuted this.
Maybe most people nowadays believe that Francis should have won, but that doesn't mean that Bob didn't deserve it either, not by a long shot, 'cause his directing in that movie is truly truly brilliant and he also created an icon of cinema!!

Idk what is more shocking, Cabaret winning over Godfather or Kramer vs. Kramer winning over Apocalypse Now.... it Deer Hunter hadn’t come out the year before in 1978, Coppola, as we all know, would’ve won. Academy just preferred musicals over gangster films back then. Today, Coppola would’ve easily gotten the Oscar. Still sad to see Fosse win though...
