Oliver Stone Wins Best Director: 59th Oscars (1987)
#BestDirector #Platoon #academyawards #oliverstone Развлечения
People seem to be forgetting that the creator Oliver Stone was Im the Vietnam war itself so I don't care what anyone says no one can make a better film about it then like a person who was really there
Who's forgetting exactly?
I hope that people commenting on here hateful things, know that Oliver is a decorated Vietnam veteran. Platoon really help breakthrough to America what Vietnam was like, and what hell our soldiers went through. America never supported our Vietnam vets, they were looked down upon. This film deserved to win. You should always support a movie that helps tell the stories of the veterans who can't.
Say what you will but Blue Velvet was a better movie.
zachary goodwin in your opinion.
+zachary goodwin
no it wasn't
David Lynch is a hack.
@@AudieHolland agreed Lynch=Hack
Great speech. He criticized America's involvement in Vietnam without exploiting the occasion of the Awards.
Yeah he got good subtle jabs in. Can't say it's too weird either he was competing with Lynch.
What an honor to get an Oscar from the hands of Dame Elizabeth Taylor who looked gorgeous in here.
Platoon won, and it deserved it. It really helped alot of people understand Vietnam. My father served 3 tours in the 198th Infantry and seen a hell of alot of combat. When he and thousands of others came home, they couldn't tell their story. They didn't know how. They weren't accepted and were not appreciated. Platoon shared some of the heartbreak that our guys went through. Oliver Stone, also is a Vietnam veteran and did his share of combat. He really did great job with Platoon.
The greatest war movie of all time in my humble opinion. And I've seen em all.
Mahesh Walatara Black Hawk Down is my favorite war movie, however I do agree that Platoon is the best of all time.
@@offspringfan1288 Black Hawk Down was very inaccurate. They didn't even cast REAL Somalians in the film. Disrespectful. And it was very exaggerated. A friend of my stepdad's actually faught in that conflict in 1993, and he said the real events weren't anything like it showed in the film. It all happened very quickly.
@@evanpeltier how is it disrespectful to not cast real somalians? You’re not complaining about the fact that eric bana is cast as an american.
@@charliehancock2280 First off, people don't give a shit about that because English and Australian actors have been playing Americans for years, and they pull it off really well. It's disrespectful to the people of Somalia, because if you're trying to depict an actual WAR that happened, you should at least use REAL Somalians to represent their country. It's important to them.
What is the second best?
One of the greatest and most inteligent film makers of all time. Platoon and Born on 4th of July just hit America so bad. But those who love war like puppets probably didnt like it.
he hited America the most with his masterpiece JFK...this man deserves Oscar for couragge
'JFK'. This one has hit not only America, but the entire world.
..and heaven and earth.. the oliver stone vietnam trilogy
Don't forget he wrote the screenplay for Scarface which has become iconic. Directed and wrote Wall Street too!
Legendary Director Wall Street, Platoon,Nixon,Born On The 4th Of July,The Doors, And JFK WOW!
And he was also the writer of Midnight Express
natural born killers
Well you can definitely tell that he’s a patriot. Or at least a history buff. Such a stunning track record.
One of the best ever!
And Alexander The Great, yes?
He was also involved with McMartin Trial(TV Movie that won the Golden Globe for best picture in 1995), Any Given Sunday, Wild Palms(1993 TV miniseries), The People vs. Larry Flynt, and the Legendary film Scarface. Oliver Stone was HUGE in the 1990s.
Is Lynch holding a piece of blue velvet in his hand? Hands down, my favorite film. Blue Velvet.
Yes, he was!
It's in my top 50, Mulholland Drive is in my top 10.
@Super guilher boom absolutely not. I adore platoon but it is no where near as thought provoking as blue velvet. It stays with you for years after seeing. It’s truly impossible to compare works of art against each other though. It’s all about what the viewer prefers
@Super guilher boom I’ll give you the cinematography and story of Platoon are top notch but is it that much more impactful than say Apocalypse Now? I actually prefer apocalypse now but that’s just me. I’ve never seen anything like Blue Velvet then and since. It’s truly one of a kind. I guess it’s about your particular preference.
Wicked movie and Wild at Heart was a great follow up
Platoon one of the best film all times.
Stone had a direct experience as a soldier in Vietnam. He was able to draw on his own Vietnam experience and observations of the insanity of war.
What's more, he found Captain Dale Dye, also a Vietnam veteran, who had just started his company that provided 'hands on' training experience for the grunts/actors in "Platoon."
Unfortunately it would happen again two decades later in Iraq.
I know
at least the losses were smaller
Uhh, no it didnt. Ur dumb.
It's happening all the time. The US has been invading and bombing foreign countries into the stone age for ever
Gulf War(1991) & Irag(2001).
This was a prophetic speech from Oliver Stone. As a Vietnam vet.
Oliver Stone=Genius! I love his speech, so true, just like Platoon was.
That soundtrack made that movie even more profound.
This is truly one of the greatest American films ever made.. The characters are so real and vivid, which is why it's so heartbreaking to watch them die, one by one.. Jr, Barnes, Elias, Bunny, Manny.. Others made it out, like King and Taylor.. A must see for anyone film buff, it will break your heart..
2:38 It was nice of Willem to bring his twin sister to the Oscars.
Absolutely good deserve, a masterpiece of movie and directing!!!
He did a masterful job on Platoon.
That movie more than holds up 22+ years later.
My favor American film maker, he doesn’t compromise.... he’s the real deal👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
"it should never ever happen again"
"the americans died for nothing"
OLIVER IS THE BEST........ever !!! One of the most courageous and honorable men to walk the earth. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Is nobody talking about how the camera was not focused in on Oliver Stone.
Elizabeth Taylor was stunning even then.
You mean that decaying piece of old leather?
@@PJV1990
You mean that decaying piece of old leather that we're all destined to be?
One of the best looking women in show business.
"it should never happen again."
WHAT ABOUT IRAQ...
Not only Iraq...
Iraq. Same thing. A false premise. I guess the Gulf of Tolkin, the USS Liberty, and Desert Shield/Storm were not better examples?
Oliver Stone was an infantryman in Vietnam, Platoon was loosely based on his experiences.
everytime i hear that song i think about willem dafoe dying in that field and i start crying
why spoil?
It drives me insane when people say Full Metal Jacket was the most realistic Vietnam war movie. Oliver imported the red stand from Vietnam just for Platoon.
Full Metal Jacket looks exactly like it was shot under grey London skies with a couple of palm trees stuck in the ground.
Platoon really shows what it is like to be in an infantry platoon, the interaction between the different races, the junior enlisted, the senior enlisted, and the officers.
David Lynch really deserved to win Best Director, and his film deserved Picture, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Screenplay and Editing wins.
He should have released it a year later
Platoon has great directing.
Замечательный режиссёр! И очень порядочный, честный человек. Долгих вам лет жизни, мистер Стоун!
I guess all the nominated movies that year are so great... but I really love the Platoon... so realistic..
Its not hypocrisy. Oliver wrote this movie about his experiences as a soldier. It was authentic.
This film is an incredible, raw account of a human tragic event. It evokes such sadness when human beings especially on the same side, are pitted against each other. Fellow man vs Fellow man. Oliver's award is rightly deserved.
Now that's how you do an acceptance speech, a little message in the beginning, what the movie meant to you and yours and then your thank-yous. Don't rant on and on and on. Show 'em how it's done Stone!
That's a great speech!
It was between Stone and Lynch to me. I loved Blue Velvet, and Platoon is still a classic to this day! Why can’t we just give everyone the award?!
oliver is a 'nam' vet. and remembers what every soldier's physical and emotional suffering his going through in vietnam...one of my fav.war film.
He won best director again a few years later for another Vietnam war movie, Born on the Fourth of July.
Platoon is my favorite war movie ever made. AMAZING cast, great acting, great director. It had everything.
she begin and see: I am Elizabeth Tayor, aplauses. no annunciated.
Stone and Uwe Boll are very similar ...Physically.
Great film and deserved. Elizabeth Taylor still looking gorgeous in the mid 1980s.
Met Stone recently. Great guy and cares deeply about his films so far after the box office...
If you have been light infantry you will understand that Platoon represents the typical experience for line infantry in Vietnam. Apocalypse Now is a very, very, pin point view of what could have happened to a select group of people in a large scale war. Full Metal Jacket offers perspective of it all, but it isn't the grunts story.
this movie is so much better than Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket - I guess it takes a true combat veteran to get it right
Well he is also a much better story teller! Realism without a great story and drama makes for a boring movie!
Indeed. I heard many Vietnam veterans had a hard time watching that movie.
Oliver Stone is a person who made an incredible influence on my life trough his movies...
Rare Hollywood justice.
What a list! I've watched the movies made this year by these directors many many times. Platoon, Blue Velvet, A Room With a View, The Mission and Hanna and Her Sisters are masterpieces on their own.
Who was the guy they showed in Oliver Stone's square?
Andy Kuehn. He reimagined the modern-day movie trailer.
Excellent speech by the great Oliver Stone both thanking those who helped him win, but also and more importantly, emphasizing the negligence of our politicians regarding Vietnam, which was akin to a failed experiment with young American lives that should never occur again, but if it does, it is because of their ignorance and failure to acknowledge their past mistakes in Vietnam. Kudos, Oliver. You deserve that Academy Award and have never made or written a bad film. You’re brilliant.🎬❤️🎬
Elizabeth looked breath-taking this night. I'm sure that's a Nolan Miller gown.
Defoe, Berenger, Sheen & Oliver Stone...... class act 👏 👌 💯🇺🇸 🇺🇲
His was deserved an Oscar
Platoon is a Masterpiece
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi great reply....11 months later, it never gets old!
Absolute legend....and more importantly a truth teller
What an incredible year for movies. I don’t know if I could make that call.
don't get me wrong blue was amazing, but Platoon is a heartbreak though.
He picked the best song for a soundtrack
Im here for david lynch hair
Stone did a helluva job, but David Lynch should have won for "Blue Velvet."
Best war movie hands down
Stone and Sheen !! ❤❤
Great cast.....good that they selected mostly young unknowns as most grunts were 19 or 20 .
My favorite was King, played by David Keith.
Gotta love that he took this Oscar and the the one 3 years later for Born on the Fourth of July. I probably would have gave Director to Lynch ('Blue Velvet" was insanely good), but gave Picture to Platoon. It's hard to choose between them.
Don't you think Willem Dafoe should've got also have got an oscar for his part as Elias? Come on guys.. think about it.
Does the Oscar channel have Oliver Stones speech for Midnight Express? I can't find it
the greatest filmmaker of his generation. Oliver has the balls to make movies on subjects that are close to his heart yet controversial. He should have bagged another one for JFK.
I, for one, think that Elizabeth looked out of this world! A goddess in that Nolan Miller gown!!
Totally disagree.. Platoon is a timeless classic, that IMO is not only the best war movie ever made, but it's also the best anti war movie ever filmed, without question.. I love Blue Velvet, and i still quote it to this day, but IMO it's not even close to the best picture of 1986.. The Academy got it right, this time..
They are two completely different stories about the same war. They can no be compared, because they show different aspects of the conflict. Platoon is much more accurate.
This had to be the most serious Oscar speech ever...
truly one of the best directors of all time, one of the few that everytime i watch there movies i am sucked in
Platoon is a great war film because it makes you CARE about the characters. That's the secret.
this is a guy who knows what the fuck he's doing, he fought for his country
Wonderful speech by Stone. And I realize how LONG ago 1987 was by looking at the shockingly young face of Dafoe, one of our best actors ever. 2:36
William Defoe looked like he needed a snickers bar… 😂
Goddamn, he was right. Vietnam was fubar.
Liz looked great that year!
I'll never forget this movie.
The mission was amazing too
Stone was going in for the kiss with Liz Taylor. He didnt even bothering offering a handshake.
What a strong line-up of nominees, but this award was for David Lynch or Oliver Stone, and Stone won!!!!
Tom Berenger shoulda won an oscar. he was the best thing in the film
"America learn nothing from Vietnam..."
very good speech by oliver stone platoon is one of the best movies i ever saw
david lynch should've won. blue velvet was beautiful
Elizabeth Taylor was quite the beauty back in the day.
wow 3 of my favorite directors nominated
God, Elizabeth looked exquisite in this Nolan Miler gown.
I was 10 years old when Platoon came out, my father dragged me to the theater 3 times to watch this. Pretty devastating stuff for a 10 year old but my father just kept saying "this is the real war"
Platoon deserved an Oscar for best picture, but David Lynch should have won it for best director
Lynch should've won
did you know that Oliver Stone wrote Scarface? This guy is one great director.
A thrilling storyteller !
For me this list should have been:
David Lynch
Woody Allen
Rob Reiner
Oliver Stone
James Cameron
Who asked, douche?
Oliver Stone is the reason I started watching epic dramas.
0:32 - 0:50 LOL the cameraman did not know who Oliver Stone was when they mention his name.
Blue Velvet is a masterpiece.
