You may disagree with Oliver Stone's political views, however, in Born On The 4th Of July, he elicited a career best performance from Tom Cruise, and he dramatized the horror of war and the degrading and demoralizing treatment of Vetrans like Kovic, who believed in serving their Country, came home maimed or paralyzed, and were marginalized or treated poorly at hospitals during the Vietnam era. He richly deserved this Oscar.

Oliver himself won the year before that, so of course he couldn't present. They chose Scorsese because he was Oliver's teacher at NYU Film School, and they expected Oliver to win. Spike was a student at the same school where Scorsese and Stone studied, the New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. And he was a classmate of Ang Lee.

Would have preferred Jim Sheridan to win. My Left Foot should have won Best Picture as well.

Give cruise his due. He considered being temporarily paralysed for the role if it weren't for insurance issues.
      He earns his money.

daz samuels I wasn't talking about Cruise. Where in my comment did I say I was talking about Cruise. But from what you said, Cruise would've been a moron if he actually tried to paralyze himself for his role.

***** Being a method actor isn't always the best route to take for acting. It's called ACTING for a reason. Trust me, I know all about the tremendous lengths actors like DDL and DeNiro put themselves through in order to give great performance, but there are other times when an actor does go too far and will probably do something stupid to themsleves if they don't realize it yet.

It was a crime that Tom Cruise did not win the Oscar for best actor here. Whatever you think of him, his performance was a masterpiece.

As Ebert & Siskel said in their "1990 Oscars picks" here on youtube,
Tom Cruise should've won over Day Lewis
