Tom's performance on Born was his best ever. So dificult to play that role. It was surprising at that time to see how good he could be. That movie is a punch on your stomach. But the competition was superb. Daniel was incredible and so was Robin.

@@aldrichdeguzman8771 Interview with the Vampire, to me, was his best. That performance blew me away. I couldn't even believe that was Tom, to be honest. Still shocks me to this day.
I go with Collateral as his best performance. Cruise played what felt like a very realistic version of a hitman. I think it's a lot harder to create a character from nothing like Cruise did in that movie. At least in Born, he had the advantage of taking notes and advice from Ron Kovic. I think this is why so many performances based on real people tend to win Oscars because the actors have a lot of automatic material to work from and a lot of it is just mimicking them or studying their life.

Great films in 1989. Tom as a paralysed man, robin as a inspirational teacher and Daniel as a guy with one working limb, all great movies. Great way to end the decade

I think the academy was a bit biased towards Tom (scientology/pretty boy image/media darling of the time) and that's why DDL won. But I have to say that this is Tom's best performance to this very day. I'm really happy that Kovic's recognition got this far.
Tom was amazing in Born on the Fourth of July. But I am gonna be honest though Daniel Day-Lewis did give a better performance in My Left Foot.
He was amazing but truly that year was a very tight race and giving the Oscar to DDL covered both artists (in a way)

Tom deserved this award. Born on the Fourth of July was a brilliant & very powerful movie & his best performance, in my opinion. I suppose he was unlucky to be up against Daniel Day Lewis for the Oscar, but at least Oliver Stone won best director. Great tribute to Ron Kovac too.

Daniel Day Lewis took his Oscar. Obviously both performances were great. I give the nod to Tom Cruise because I felt more emotion from his performance.
