Oh my God. I am so glad that my curiosity brought me to watch this segment of the movie. The brutal honesty of the catastrophe that the Vietnam wrought on our young men is so perfectly shown. I feel the anguish of Ron Kevin as he struggles with his feelings -- denying them in th name of a patriotic duty. So beautifully told here. Tom does a fantastic job and bringing in the music from "Moon River" from the dramatic ending of the movie is brilliant.
This particular scene just shows how Oliver Stone is a genius. He portrayed, perfectly, the innocence of younghood and the subsequent lost of it by war and politics.
It is genius in this movie. But Oliver Stone has always viewed the real world as a cutthroat place of hostile people, cruelty, and indifference, whether it was Vietnam, Wall Street, a seriously flawed president, or talk radio host.
It's a beautiful yet heartbreaking kiss scene. How tragic it is that a young man carries such a first love in his heart as he heads to the battlefield... The music is also so beautiful.
This scene is a replay of my life as a teenager. I was a senior in high school getting ready to graduate in June of 65. Played sports, had a girlfriend and totally directionless regarding my future. Thought about college but my parents didn’t have two nickels to rub together. Did a couple of college tours but was overwhelmed by the facilities and the students. I felt kids like me from my background had no place in college. I was so insecure and shy. I still remember my friends getting their college acceptance letters andshowing them to their friends with such excitement. I came realize that I had to get out of town. I had my buddy drive me down to the Marine recruiter’s office. Signed up for a four year hitch. Didn’t tell my parent’s or my girlfriend. A week later I left for Parris Island for boot camp. First day at PI I realized I had made the biggest mistake of my life. While all my friends were either going to college or starting their careers I was a US Marine. Travelled the world and did a 13 month tour in Vietnam as a Scout Dog Handler in the 1st. MarDiv. Brutal 13 months. Came thru it with a Bronze Star w/V, and two Purple Hearts and the rank of Sergeant. Discharged in June of 69. Came back home with little money, and no real career. Somehow I got accepted to a state university. Those four years away and much more confidence allowed me to excel in school. Double majored, graduated at the top of my class and went into the corporate world. Achieved more success than I could ever imagine. I am blessed. Every time I view this scene it reminds of how insecure I was and how one rash decision can alter your life.
I read your speech from the Moving Wall in 2019. I know you don't want to hear this, but you epitomize the common American displaying uncommon valor, service, and sacrifice. Thank God for men like you.
Happy 60th Birthday Tom Cruise! Academy Award on its way or else...go to Europe where true talent is recognised and thank you for keeping cinema alive...you dont know how much this means...at least for me
Such an amazing talent. Cruise's acting range is so versatile. Born on the 4th of July is a perfect example of it. He went from an high school jock, loving his country, God fearing, awkward around the girls teenager to becoming an angry, shaking his fist at the system drunk and cussing out his own mother before it was all over with!!
Thought the same . Before he joined he wanted to go with that girl but didn’t. They both wanted to go with each other just couldn’t admit it . Then at last minute showed up wet and danced with his girl.,Then during war and when he came back . He was utterly lost 😢😢
I just watched this movie on some 80's channel. My god Tom Cruise was stunning when he was young. He's still beautiful but when he's asking her to the prom..... I could so feel his pain.
I saw this when I was 17… I think in January 1990 or December 1989… I was a senior in high school. I got stoned as shit, so I was really plugged into the movie emotionally. this scene here where he goes to the dance and then transitions right into the war, is one of the best directing and editing transition scenes I’ve ever seen Oliver Stone produce.. he goes from innocence, right into the brutality of war… I was so high when I saw this movie, it just made such an impression on me because I was of that age when war came calling my generation, and of course we would be going to war in eight months after this movie came out… Iraq in August 1990. A lot of my friends went and join the Marines.
Ron’s father Eli worked as a manager or assistant manager at a supermarket and supported a large family at a nice, comfortable small home in the suburbs. The good ole days! And he was a WW2 vet himself that probably didn’t receive any VA healthcare or disability of any kind. Only the wounded and 20+ year veterans got that.
Genius sequence / the music lining up perfectly the Kiss the acting and That fade to black as the camera Pulls back Through the Crowd is awesome and then 💥 Vietnam!
Was Ron Kovic misinformed about Vietnam? Or was he so eager to follow in his family’s footsteps? His father sure didn’t want him to join, but Ron was so determined. I wonder if its the pressures of being the son of a member of the Greatest Generation. I feel these boys wanted to emulate them, that they themselves became the greatest of their generation. Thank you for your service Ron and all Vietnam Vets who came home to boos and insults.
Nixon while having Parades for returning POW's vetoed a veterans benefit bill. Ron is an amazing Human Being, and as a 75 year old movie lover I believe that Tom Cruise in this movie gave the best acting performance EVER on Film.
The worship of war movies, desire to be a good American, his Catholic faith, and the military recruitment pamphlets he saw led him and his mate Richie to vow to each other that the day they turn 17, they will go to the local recruitment office and sign up for the Marine Corps. People like Ron at this time genuinely didn't know what they were getting into, they believed America was a savior bringing freedom and peace to Vietnam.
America was still proud and basking in the glow of their noble victory in World War II, America's finest hour. The following generation wanted to live up to the high bar that their fathers set. America hadn't yet lost a war. Even though just a many died in Korea during this period, but ended in a stalemate. The Vietnam War was in it's early stages with the US. The General on TV is overestimating the war and believes the US will handily win a conventional war. Not knowing that it is going to be a guerrilla war that America is oblivious too. Ron wants to join and fight because he wants to do his part in a noble war. Mr Kovic is skeptical as he already senses that this is not like previous wars. He is proud of his son, but doesn't think he should be rushing into this proxy war half a globe away.
Agreed. Tough decisions for him because you want to do right for your country, family and faith. I don’t think he made a bad decision. I think america made some bad decisions. Americans didn’t treat these boys right when they came home.
Tom Cruise has only made maybe 1 or 2 films I didn’t care for. Everything else he’s in has been amazing. And yes, even the Mission: Impossible films still wow me with all the insane stunts he takes on. But here? Man, talk about a brilliant performance
I’m 46 years old now and still think about this dance/prom scenic…a great romantic moment in cinematic history. All of this from the grocery store to his kiss at the dance captured so much perfectly
