Powerful scene especially the end when his father breaks down. He is so overwhelmed with so many emotions. He is haunted by the past and what was, as he looks at the new reality facing his son. As a father he holds himself responsible for Ronnies condition even though he had nothing to do with it. It's his son and his life is part of him, and in this case it's gone horribly wrong. He feels helpless and would give anything to go back in time. Powerful stuff that only a parent can truly understand.

Its easy with 50 years of hindsight to be critical of the mother. But in reality, this is how lots of parents and wives reacted when their men came back from the Vietnam War.
They came back broken, wounded, in mental anguish and torment. The mom tried to cope but she just couldnt deal with it. The men that fought the War were not the same ones that the familes knew. Let the rich send their kids, let the poor become educated so they can see through the bs.

After 35 years, this is still the finest film I’ve ever seen. I’m not generally a Tom Cruise fan, but his performance is astounding. Cruise did extensive research and treated the role with the respect it deserves. I’ve never served in combat, but this film more than any other brings home the feelings of loss, pain, regret, disillusionment, alienation and shame at how many like Kovic were treated upon return from the war. As if the horror of the war wasn’t enough, many veterans had to find their place again and somehow go on. I can’t even listen to the score by John Williams without tears. The innocence and hope of Massapequa is gone when Ron returns home, and he spent years trying to find peace again. Heartbreaking.

I think at 2:30 minutes when his mom leaves, is a key scene.
She comes across as a vile woman who only thinks of herself and projecting a certain image. I don’t think she is overcome with sorrow for Ronnie, it seems like she’s embarrassed that all the neighbors will think of her son as a freak, and that it will somehow reflect badly on her.
Contrast at 2:50 his dad is beaming, only because his son is alive and still with them.
For the Mom, that’s not enough.

Even though I think he understands whats going through Ron’s head - regardless, he’s just so please to have his son back.
