But what about modern cinema like: Birdman, 3 billboards outside ebbing missouri, a serious man, no country for old men, the lobster, prisoners, the shape of water, you were never really here, the master, there will be blood, get out etc etc. Either you've never seen those films and therefore don't really deserve an opinion on modern cinema or you don't like those movies and that's sad...

Best acceptance speech I've seen, hands down, anywhere! The guy kept churning out those powerhouse, award-winning movie roles over six decades - he's a machine! And never more magnetic and charismatic than playing himself. Jack Nicholson is the ultimate movie star.
It's based on a wonderful book. If you haven't read it I highly suggest you do. If you like that book I suggest Birdy written by William Wharton which was made into a film as well but the novel is so much better.
Jack Nicholson nominated for "Chinatown" and "The Last Detail" both, is a feat in itself and receiving it on a set of a film for which he'll win again.

link004, One reason that Finney might seem less successful than the others is that Finney was (and is) a classically trained British stage actor. Unlike the others, the focus of his career was not on being an American movie star. So, he'd stop doing movies for a while and do Shakespeare and Chekov and the great authors on stage in England.
Adam Redfield Yes, very true. Finney could’ve been a bigger star in America but just didn’t have the desire, he turned down the lead in Lawrence of Arabia because he didn’t want to sign a long term contract with the producers. He nearly won an Oscar for Erin Brockovich but didn’t go to the ceremony because he couldn’t smoke there
