If you want an example of how humble Demme was the acceptance speech, from his clear nervousness to his praise of the then crumbling Orion Pictures, is a perfect example. A well deserved win.RIP.
A year later Orion was re-opened to make great movies starting with 1993's Posse. Four years later, it was now purchased by both Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Sony Pictures Entertainment in 1997.
I agree, but his performance was quite short, in terms of on-screen time. Still managed to create one of the most iconic film characters, though, Ted Levine is a hugely underrated actor.
To everyone who's criticizing this speech, he didn't expect to win. And when he did win, he was nervous. He thanked those who came to his head, probably just had a vague idea of who he'd thank if he did win, but when he got up there, he didn't know how to say it, especially since he wanted to think not just the actors, but the people behind the film and the studio, which was going through bankruptcy, so he wanted to say something about them, and then to mention the new directors that came onto the seen just recently. As a result he says "Uh... um.... uh... oh..." a lot. He said a lot more than he anticipated as he didn't think he'd win.
It did after Orion Pictures was re-folded & re-named into Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1997 under Sony Pictures Entertainment and then to mention the new group of filmmakers such as Jodie Foster, Julie Dash, Ernest R. Dickerson, John Singleton, Christine Lahti, Jeff Goldblum, Peter Weller among others that came onto seen recently.
This guy made history in cinema. The first and only horror movie to win Oscars so far, and one of the few movies to sweep the Oscar on the 5 main categories. Gonna miss you Jonathan❤️ R.I.P
Possibly my favorite movie of all time. And I was just watching "Philadelphia" for the umpteenth time a few days ago. I also love "Married to the Mob" and "Rachel Getting Married". Never actually saw this speech. Adorable. R.I.P. Jonathan Demme. A great loss for cinema and humanity.
What an AMAZING year for directing! John Singleton, Oliver Stone, Ridley Scott, and of course, the best of them all, Jonathan Demme (I'm not familiar with Barry Levinson, but I'm sure he's great). So outstanding!
I have to say: the best acceptance speech ever, because I have been in Mr. Demme's shoes in terms of speaking in front of an audience and feeling nervous. Watching him was like watching myself perform, so I identify with his nerves at the time.
Only acceptance speech I have ever seen by a director where he manages to thank all of the important people on a film without a miss and also acknowledges his fellow nominees. Great speech. Nowadays music will be played regularly in an attempt to bleep his words out...
Agreed. Rachel Getting Married was absolutely wonderful. One of my all-time favorite American family dramas. Anne Hathaway deserved the Oscar,. Rosemarie Dewitt, Debra Winger ( nice comeback role ) and Bill Irwin deserved Oscar nominations.
One of the few people at Disney was Miss Elaine Wilkes. And joining her were the real life Grammy winning married couple Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo who wrote the best song from October 1982: "Get Nervous" as well as the real life husband and wife married couple Philip Charles MacKenzie and Alison MacKenzie who wrote some books about giving people need a big break from all of those situations. For example, take a break from the US to live in Italy for years to come. That's what Alison MacKenzie and her son, Wil Harris did leave the US and enjoy traveling to Italy in their spare time like playing classical orchestras and instruments from around the world.
The fact that he mentioned Ted Levine (whose remarkable performance as Buffalo Bill always gets overshadowed by Anthony's) and Brooke Smith (who played Catherine Martin and was NOT an actress) shows just the amount of respect and admiration he had for his co workers. He left us too early. RIP mr. Demme, who made us love the word "lamb" a little more.
What an amazing director. I can't think of a movie he's made that I don't love in some way. Even when he fumbled, his love of movies was right there onscreen.
There were some great nominees in this year for Best Director. After seeing "Silence..." take the Oscar for Best Actress, Actor, (and later Picture); there was no doubt that it was going to win Best Director.
To one of the greatest in film making, Jonathan Demme greatest strength is capturing the personalities of their characters and gave them body and soul. I frankly don't remember any directors who had this type of skill that could pull the right strings whether being fear or sorrow. Thank you John...you are still one of my favorite directors from the 20th century. We shall meet again. RIP
1991 to 1995 was the peak of movies directing acting look at the nominees those years demme did back to back amazing films he made Philadelphia a year later where he had two men win best actor in a row great director who used to make comedies he's a cool guy in he casts always the sane supporting character actors
Demme was a great director. He did good in Something Wild and Married to the Mob as well. Not just Silence of the Lambs or Philadelphia but The Manchurian Candidate as well
The IMDB trivia page said John Singleton looked visibly angry when he lost, but it really doesn't look that way. It looks like he's giving him the "Ada-boy!" as they announced Jonathan Demme.
Kevin Costner received his nominations for Dances With Wolves less than a week before The Silence of the Lambs was released. There hasn't been a Best Picture winner since to have been released that early
RIP Jonathan Demme and John Singleton.
Legit the two front runners IMHO

my theory .. his work was too much too scary , like andrew robinson dirty harry
Ted's performance is one for the books. He was too good.
Would you nominate me? I'd nominate me. I'd nominate me SO HARD.

SOTL is more of a psychological thriller
Poor guy, seems really nervous. He really deserved it though. I have found his direction to be very influential.
The way he uses the camera and framing in Silence of the Lambs is just second-to-none.

They don't give this much time for acceptance speech nowadays, do they?
Nope they only give you 60 seconds, unless you want to make political statements a virtue signaling, in which case you get all the time you need.
