@Diego Pisfil Absolutely!, and for a while it seemed that the only award it was going to get was Best Actress for the one and only Glenn Close...But Cher ...You know the story..
"The last emperor" is too monotonous and too boring and not energical. One of the worst movies I ever watched. But I am sad for have said that, because I am Italian like Bernardo Bertolucci. I'm sorry Bernardo, but it is true for me.
Isn't he also the same guy who had Marlon Brando shove a stick of butter up a woman's vagina? Wouldn't exactly call that the behavior of a fine and gentle person.
Man Eddie Murphy you were close on that prediction, both in the year predicted and you saying you'd never win an oscar. You ALMOST had it for Dreamgirls.... almost....
The movie was fantastic, I watched when I was 12 years old at the theatre. Now I watch it often, but I don’t understand why John Lone (the main character’s actor) didn’t win the academy award for the best actor: he was amazing.
The Last Emperor is a colossal masterpiece, a myriad of international talents led by the best Italian direction of his generation; and better yet, not hugely popular; hipsters have not tainted its legacy. A movie for true moviegoers.
4:43. Robin Williams: And the winner is, and the Academy, along with the Oscar this year, is giving out a green card. BTW, big props to the people in the front rows of the audience at 5:13, who start the standing ovation.

I would replace Chariots of Fire with either On Golden Pond or Reds. I'd replace Crash with either Brokeback Mountain or Good Night and Good Luck. I'd replace How Green Was My Valley with Citizen Kane (or maybe The Maltese Falcon).
Nah..."On Golden Pond" was great but it came after a streak of two family dramas winning Best Picture ("Kramer" and "Ordinary People") so it didn't bring anything fresh or impacting like "Chariots of Fire" did... "Reds" was epic but ask yourself which one was more memorable on the long term? "Chariots" or "Reds", give me an iconic moment from both, which one is the most memorable? "Raiders" was the closest contender but I'm glad "Chariots" won ... (I agree with the others by the way)
Sdk ElMaruecan Reds was a brilliant film that surely deserved to win, neither Chariots of Fire or Reds are as talked about much today as they were at the time of their release but none of that matters, what matters is how good the film is on its own.
Reds was by far better but it was against the little engine that could, Chariots. Different movies but David vs Goliath syndrome all of the time. Ordinary People vs Raging Bull, Fargo vs The English Patient, The Hurt Locker vs Avatar. Sometimes my fave wins, The Last Emperor. Sometimes it does not. Its a crap shoot. Its a rarity that something or someone wins because of the art of it All and not just plain ole Marketing and/or Campaigning.
My friend whilst Out of Africa was good but didn't deserve it, Chariots of Fire is a whole different ball game. It did deserve Best Picture because if you look at the techniques employed in that film such as cinematography, music, sound etc.. it is truly groundbreaking and it means a lot to my country. But it's your opinion sir and I respect it.
I saw the original cut of the film (2 hrs 42 mins) on video back then and didn't really think it was all that great. Then, in 2003, I saw the full-length 3-hour-48-minute director's cut and I was like HOLY SHIT. 😳 THAT cut of the film is one of the greatest films ever made. It tells the story in a much more linear, easy-to-follow fashion. Certain parts of history that were only hinted at or referenced are explored completely, and the result is an extremely cohesive, nearly 4-hour film that not only never gets boring, but remains riveting throughout and seems to go a lot faster than it's running time would govern. THAT version of the film is an absolute masterpiece and I couldn't recommend it more.
It's weird but also amazing to see a fellow citizen winning an Oscar! And it's funny to notice also how our Parmesan guttural R - which we inherited from the French - quietly pops out in his speech, even if he speaks a decent English!
