    D-mile is a great musician and even better person. I know the Octapad is not everyone's cup of tea, but those are the tools given to him and every competitor. I didn't own an Octapad and had to learn it by reading the manual and going to Guitar Center to mess around with it. At the end of the day he played the game and won. For those who have never done the competition, it is very stressful and not as easy as it seems. The pressure, the set-up time (or lack their of), the spotlight, drums that you have never played on, the time restrictions, the categories that need to be fulfilled are the things that most won't understand or cannot relate to. However, just enjoy the performance and let's be positive forces in the drumming world. There's so much negativity in this world, why keep adding more filth? God Bless everyone and have an AWESOME DAY!!! Much respect to D-Mile and everyone who competes.

      Stephen Valente thank you so much! I will be posting up a video soon with some tips that might help you and others out. Also, I will be holding some drum camps (4 students per camp) and I can help you there as well! For more details check out www.carlitomendoza.com/drumcamps

    I look at a guy like this and watch how he has adapted to his surroundings. Watch his older videos and you see nothing but solid drumming. ALMOST making it for a few years....and then he caught on to the fact that you have to use the octapad and the cute little tricks to win this thing. He adapted....and it worked. Amazing drummer.

    This guy is great, not as good at last year or the year before but i can tell he prepared and worked as hard as he could to be creative.
    Contrary to what people are saying, holding a solo with non-linear chops at that tempo with Octopad orchestration and multiple styles takes a lot of skill!
    Seems like he deserves the win to me. It's gonna be tough to beat this kind of solo, but either way, he has a new fan for sure!

    yo d-miles, keep doin your thing. We live in a world now where people with less talent than you try to kill u with negativity in hopes that you'll give up and stop growing because that's the only way to close the gap between your ability and theirs. Dont fall for it. Keep doin your thing. I'm more convinced that social media forums just expose a world full of bitter people who hate themselves and can't stomach the sight of other people taking advantage of opportunities when presented...and succeeding, while "they" sit on the couch eatin fritos and sour straws as "their" opportunities pass by the window. definition of pathetic.

    IDK, I've shedded with a few drum off winners(3 to be exact) and in all honesty i kinda had their heads spinning. So much so that they were asking me to show them what i was doing or playing. Conversely i didn't see anything they were playing that impressed me. They kind of had the same pseudo-gospel\R&B style. Outside of phrasing or whatever there was nothing different. I think there's so much focus on the visual\entertainment aspect of it that drummers don't realize you can't hear a stick twirl in a recording. Not to slight everyone who has won because there are genuinely talented cats who have won but in many of the cases its like American Idol for the drum world in that the best don't necessarily win but the most entertaining.

    • @tyasteele
      @tyasteele 10 лет назад

      Just in all honesty, I really did not get much out of this winner. As you said, there is nothing different. Each of the contestants pretty much used the same "chops" (slang for skillsets). The showmanship is great, but I'm really getting a little worn-out on it. The drumoff competition should be about drumming. Anyone can stand on their drum-throne and yell like an animal, or spin sticks, or whatever. Who can't learn fives and triplets using quads or triplets combinations? There needs to be a bit more soul in these winners. The 2012 winner rocked. I loved his work.

    I've been a musician for 40 years, believe there is nothing wrong with the recent introduction of the Octapad in the Drum-off, really appreciate D-Mile's talent, but wish Guitar Center would calm the f&%k down with all the different camera shot edits. I'm not as ADHD as the editor apparently.
    Seriously, guys, look at your product and explain why you need so many cuts when the guy is sitting in one place the entire time. Complete crap recording from a video standpoint. Review what you spent on video recording this performance and divide by fifteen. That is your budget for next year.

So I practiced without it and designed my solos without one. Me and the other two guys who didn't use an octopad just couldn't make it through because they dinged us SO harshly for not using one. It sucked.

    I love the idea of the octopad, but if your whole performance revolves around it than you shouldn't have won. Take last years winner for example. Juan Carlos Mendoza utilized the octopad well, but his whole performance didn't revolve around it. What I mean by this is that if you take all the octopad parts from his performance you still have a solid performance and some awesome drumming. If you take away the octopad from D Miles performance then all you have are blast beats and "How fast and confusing can i make this" fills. Hopefully the 2014 winner doesn't follow D-Mile's example.

      d-mile looks like a typical fergerson rioter to me. if it wasn't his great skills on the drums, I wouldn't want to be his friend. Juan Carlos Mendoza to me is still number one winner in history because he was simply the best drummer thus far. he improved since his 08' run off, and conqured later with authority. I haven't seen the other winners, and I probably don't need to. Mendoza's performance can never be topped unless a new genius comes up with something different and fresh. I wish I could play and sound like carlos.

    Clearly being the best drummer in the competition is not what wins these guitar center drum offs. I have been told that I play to fast or that I play to much metal and double bass at these competitions....what kind of advice is that to give a drummer? You figure if you display that you can play at 230 + bpm and then slow it down to a very natural heart felt jazz groove and then throw in some r&b grooves that they would understand how versatile you are...they are more concerned if you can twirl your drum sticks or what kind of T shirt you are wearing while you're playing than how good your technique is or the actual technicality of your drum solo.

    • @TheSquareOnes
      @TheSquareOnes 9 лет назад +2

      Why is only the jazz groove "heartfelt"? Because that cliche is used to describe that style of drumming and not others? Seems like a red flag.
      Also, I doubt you're as proficient as this guy. If you are, congratulations on being in the top percent of drummers worldwide, I'd love to hear your music sometime. Yes, he twirled his sticks and encouraged audience participation. Yes, that's pretty obnoxious. No, that isn't all he did. If you're just going to gloss over everything else he put into this solo and focus on what you don't like you're just as bad as the people that dismissed you.

    What bothers me about the Drum Off now, is with the Roland Octopad, there's hardly any actual 'soloing', it's all beats and fills based around some artificial sound from that pad. I wish some spunky drummer just came and blew everyone away with an old-fashioned solo.

    Excellent performance. GC, please get rid of the darn Octapads for these contests. Sure it's newer technology that drummers need to know about or use, but it takes away from actually entertaining with just the drums.

      *****
      I bet Roland is a large sponsor of this contest. Therefore dumping money in for advertising, that Guitar Center is not going to pass up. I'm not even a drummer and I think the Octapood is lame and annoying in these contests. I wanna hear stick technique, dynamics and overall groove not some dumb samples.

      ***** not a drummer, but you sure know your stuff! I'm thinking of entering next year, but I'm kinda turned off by the octapad being a requirement. Does that mean Bernard Purdie would lose this contest?? It's all about the groove!!

  • @ManleyReviews
    @ManleyReviews 10 лет назад +1

    Ahahahaha!
    Remember when these used to be drum solos? Good times.
    But in every contestants defense, I don't look down on the octopad that much. Sure, I wasn't thrilled it was used the way it was in this particular solo, but in reality.. it gives a whole new (potential) spectrum of musicality to be included into the solo.
    When I competed, I "bought" an octopad (only to conveniently return it before the 30 day return policy and after my second performance;) This gave me a lot of time to just sit down and woodshed over some song-like parts that the audience just loves when you whip them out in the middle of a drum solo.
    And that's just it. It supposed to be a drum solo enhancer, having the octopad revolving around the drummer... Instead of the inverse, which, according to what I just listened to, is where it's heading. Looking at the past, there were some astounding performances that didn't lean too much on the octapad, yet used it just enough that it took their solos to the next level, and beyond!
    Carlos Mendoza absolutely blew me away with his implication of the octopad, not to mention his amazing drumming chops and how tight everything had been worked out. You could tell he just sat down, and thought the parts out, and just practiced the hell out of them. It was the perfect balance between
    1. complicated octopad riffs
    2. Musicality
    3. drumming chops
    4... and some other 4th thing. I don't know, I'm probably missing something.
    And I could say the same exact thing about JP! The issue here isn't the octopad, it's the drummers. It's how YOU incorporate it into your solo. I'm talking to the round 1-5 competitors! If you don't like what you hear..
    Make something better. Bam! and maybe I'll be watching YOU on one of these videos going, "holy crap, that was amazing! I loved the way he (she) added those octopad parts too!" :)
    Yeah, I wouldn't mind it if Guitar Center would drop the octopad product placement in the GCDO but I guess when Guitar center gives you lemons... haha!

    Hating on the octapad:
    Just imagine that the octapad is a rototom or any other percussion instrument.
    Not musical?"
    The beginning of his solo in my mind is a song.

    • @JaydonTobler
      @JaydonTobler 10 лет назад

      the pad is the best thing to happen to the competition. it allows players with chops to have something extra that really helps expand what they play. it takes just as much skill to play the Octapad effectively as it does the instrument itself. Musically, drummers today are being asked to do more, and remaining a purist will just leave you in the dust behind everyone else.

    I really like this guy. He's a beast for sure. But I really hate the Octopad. That's like playing two instruments at once. Those are synths! Why not just have a keyboard in the background or something? That's like kinda messed up. I feel like it's just completely wrong to be in a drum competition. Yea your hitting it and it's percussion, but its making synth sounds. It's just not right with drums. They shouldn't go together, at least in this competition.

    Just ran across this video. I feel a little different about the use of the Octapad. While his drumming skils are really sharp, it's nice to see another challenge thrown at all of them and see how they integrate this into their solo. Either you like it, or you don't. I enjoyed it.

    It's fun playing drums But why do people bash a guy who's an artist. Why the whole MMA fighting mentality? I believe a lot of these whining ask drummers are just plain jealous. The solo was FOR drummers and who attacks ? Drummers.Half these haters don't know a quarter note from a golf club .Can't even sing a C major scale or stay with a band. Haters! Leave -people- alone!

    All of you'll that's talking about these drummers using the octapad, you'll are putting these drummer's down. Part of making music is using technology. Even if some of these player's didn't use the pad every drummer did a great job.
    I like how D-mile played that Chris Brown cover. D-mile was phenomenal.

      PrizeFighter exactly. its not right. so wrong. this is not drums. this is technology. it enhances the performance added more groove to it with tunes. this sounds more appealing to the listener which gives them huge edge to the judges. if they can use it, they will beat any other drummer who doesn't use it.
