- This is the video of the drums on the master take, from the project 'Play' by Dave Grohl.

He’s not even playing to a ghost track or with a metronome. The melodies, accents, the changes and timing. It’s all in his head! That’s incredible!
I’ve listened to the first Foos album again recently and I’m still amazed that he played everything on it. He has to be one of the greatest rock musicians ever. A legend for sure.
Dave grolh is an average drummer
@@82manginiL
@@82manginiand ur a below average human being guaranteed. Muppet
@@82mangini that's what he'd say.
He us the metronome. Such amazing talent. I'd love to see him work with Reznor or Maynard for sure.
After 3 years, we want this masterpiece in 4k now please haha
This is what you get the when the drummer writes the music. Every note means something. Every snare crash and bass drum has a meaning. It's glorious to watch.
Absolutely! It’s beyond belief
I really have to work harder on my weaknesses ! Man ,I am still in 8th grade and Dave is through university, if you know what I mean ? I have so much trouble getting all of my limbs doing something different at the same time .
exactly.... each note tugs at specific fraction of an emotion
i was gonna like your comment but nice
It's almost as if he hears the music as drums first, and then uses the guitar as a drum with more range and notes. His guitar is so rhythmic and the accents are perfect.
Many drummers can physically play this but nobody on this planet can do it the way Dave does. The combination of subtlety, clarity, precision and power he plays with is unbelievable. I'm glad he is who inspired me to play drums. I feel blessed to have learned how to play by watching him because the bar couldn't be any higher.
Ummmm....ever hear of Danny Carey....pfffft.
@@jamesjaneczek8256 That's kind of my point. Danny Carey can play anything but alot of drummers sound like him.
@@jamesjaneczek8256 A classy guy that can keep great rhythm. The world's best drummer is very subjective , it's all in what style people like
@@MdhLV no one sound like Danny Carey, those polyrhythm cant copy at all
What about Danny Carey from Tool he's my favorite drummer of all time but Dave is badass 🤘🖤🤘
Dave Grohl is the perfect rock drummer. Solid, hits hard, never over plays, locks right in to the music and propels it forward while staying in the pocket. He knows exactly where to accent to make rock just that much harder. He's definitely one of the the greats.
ditto!!
best rock drummer? Probably
The amount of talent this man posses is absolutely insane
Indeed
I bet you he also practiced a bit :)
Due to him being FF front man, you forget how much this guy loves playing drums - he definitely plays with heart and soul - loved it!!
I'm back again. There are times when I just have to spend a good half hour listening to Dave playing the drums. Next to Neil Peart, Dave Grohl is just incredibly awesome... could listen to him for hours.
Never thought he recorded it in one take. That's even more impressive than playing all the instruments and the composition itself. I don't think people understand how hard that is.
Iszil Most folks who play all the instruments are able to do it in one take. While I don't write as well as he does, I play all the instruments on my recordings and I usually do them no problem in one take.
@@TempoDrift1480 Show us!
@@TempoDrift1480 badly, probably.
And we are talking about a 23 minute take here
I mean it’s his original so we wouldn’t know if Dave made a mistake lmao
He said he has never had a single drum lesson & that he just plays them how he "thinks" they are supposed to be played,I just love this guy,as a drummer & a person!
Most great musicians who write their own music don't know how to read it. Example: the Beatles.
@@messygamez5675 But prolly the circle of 5ths....
@gdubsie4 At a Foos show I saw some years back, they did an acoustic set including a violin player and some additional percussion. At some point, they pointed out that only the violin player and the triangle player could read music. It did make me feel so much better! And the triangle guy did a kick-ass rock triangle solo.
No rules ! Just play the darn things ,hahaha. WOOOH!
@@DaveHaynie think that’s now changed with the permanent addition of Shiflett, Dave said recently "he's the only proper musician in the band" or something along those lines, as he can read music and understands the technical structure
In my opinion, Dave sounds really good here. I had a random playlist that started with Sonny Emory, then went to Weckl, then Buddy, Charly, Gadd, Vinnie etc. I wasn't watching the video (I was working and had my phone in my pocket playing to a Bluetooth speaker) When this clip started it caught my ear. Never would've guessed it was Grohl. He is forever a student of the art. Love it!
it's amazing how he instantly looks like he's in nirvana again when he sits at a kit! so much energy!! fantastic!
I Know this guy is loved by almost everyone. But I still think he doesn´t get enough credit as the master drummer he is. This is insanely good.
What drummer ever does. Some only get that credit after they've stopped playing
Guys......really? Its ok when you like what he plays, but he is NOT a "master" drummer at all.
Thìs is just slightly beyond generic kit bashing.
Hitting hard doesn t make him a master.
Not even in hitting hard.
Pep - In this video is metric modulation, odd-time signatures, numerous different rudiments, and lots of dynamics. Are we even watching the same video?
Same thing happened to Collins. As soon as he stepped up to sing, people forgot how masterful he was on the drums
you're right!
This dude has evolved so freaking much further than his peers. Just continues to improve his skill sets. I'm not a huge fan of FF, but I have tremendous respect for Mr. Grohl. Awesome post!
Un batero rockero con mucho groove... Maneja a la perfección el estilo
zeeeOgre he says he never practices drums.
I would argue that Taylor Hawkins is every bit as good a drummer as Dave Grohl, and I dont say that lightly. Dave is a bit more powerful though.
@@foskco87 Taylor is the Fill Master...and yeah, Dave is definitely a huger basher...but otherwise pretty similar...think Dave helped get Taylor to where he is today...just mho...shit amateur drummer here...lol
zeeOgre I agree with u 1000%. Dave loves music and it shows as he, IMHO, is an extremely talented drummer as well as a very good guitarist. Dedication, persistence, patience, and most of all thousands of hours practice is the only way to get where he is at.
Downloaded before I could even finish this video. This is some of the best music I’ve heard in a long time.
Nope. Just hearing, he's never leaving us
Food for a drummer’s soul...nice work, Dave.
This dude is a phenomenon, he can pretty much play any instrument and plays it with utter conviction.
@David Elgin great back handed compliment lol
@@bak1386 No one can master everything but very few are extremely good at so many.
And can't read a musical note simply mother nature's masterpiece musician
Any chance you guys could check out remix of this song using Dave's drums? I added my own new parts over his tracks. Just click my name to see it on my page. I"d really appreciate it!
Dave Grohl is average in ALL instruments
Seeing this makes me want to show it to all students of the instrument as a study in groove and subtlety. Yes he goes balls to the wall at times but it all fits. The groove is not lost during the flashy parts, instead it’s reinforced. Too many drummers are all speed during a solo and it sounds like a car accident, or they don’t know when to lay back, be in the pocket, then lead when needed. Just super tasty fills on here that fit fine. A driving rhythm without monotony. Every roll or fill propels the music forward, fitting together like a super glued Jenga puzzle. Learning, evolving, growing. Two thumbs way up!
Well said
Exactly!
Being a bass player for many many years the problem with most drummers that can't distinguish play with power yet remain clean, distinctive and supportive to root the foundation. There's simply few drummers that ebb and flow without losing feel, power, and dynamics of the music. I have almost took my bass off and slammed it over a drummer's head because of overplaying and chaotic playing!
Show them!!
I think that's a great idea that would help your students tremendously. I'm a guitar player wanted some wonder pieces of this caliber but I'm not a drummer and logic drum don't have this groove and feel. Makes me want to learn to count.
I could watch this on repeat all day
The open/close high hat snare riff equates to the sexiest sound waves my ear drums have ever been blessed to vibrate to.
True lover of music, life, family and people! Don’t ever stop Dave! 👍🤘🏻🇺🇸🎸🎶
No Fresh Pots were harmed in the making of this video
You dare to put Grohl in 360p
Dave’s 2112. All of his influences are represented. Rush, Motörhead, NIN, Scream, obsessed, Killing Joke, Bad Brains, Minor threat, Led Zeppelin, Beatles etc.
I'm SO GLAD I listened to the isolated drums first. This just made it a million times better.
Have listened to this many times already and keep hearing new subtle things I didn’t catch before. It’s really an amazing piece. It’s incredible that after so many years and all his success that Dave still has this level of drive for music and the creative process.
Man that kit is solid, and so is Dave!!! I love how his face plays along - so into it.
Dave Grohl is the man! He made a huge impact in the drumming world till to this day! Such a musical human being.Thank you Dave!!
I don't think most people understand this song was a masterpiece.
Is* a masterpiece, but i get what you're trying to say and I agree!
@@DrumMaster1498 still don't know the difference of those words.. because my country doesn't use english.. would you explain it to me?
It is a huge freaking masterpiece!
hanif fadhillah “was” means it is past, “is” the present (today).
@@artfulstories oh okay, i got it. Thankyou so much
hats off to the engineers! and of course to Dave for writing the song and providing the opportunity for the sound to be captured in the way that it was. Fantastic!
WOW! hearing Dave with fresh ears, every time i see him and hear him my respect grows for his talent. nice chops and touch where needed.
He's so musical to playing along with the other instruments
Such a pleasure to watch this man on the drums. Just brilliant.
i miss him on drums...
@@StevenJamesBurks Of course, Steve J. Burks aka the gospel drummer would obviously do a better job.... His playing is quite complex at time and very creative, you should try to play the whole thing in one take without any mistakes, then you come back and say whatever you want...
Gospel? really? Lmfao!!!!
*why won't you post one of your own video so we can compare a bit?
Steven James Burks I don't get the hype. He's an awesome person but he's nothing special on the drums.
Kids under 40 (45?) may forget that when Dave first appeared on the scene in Nirvana circa 1991 he took indie rock music to a whole new level with his drumming precision and power. No one else imho does triplets on the toms like Dave. Always makes me smile! You can tell he studied John Bonham hard.
dave also played in a band called scream out of DC ( check out the lp "no more censorship) and really shined on drums. he was doing stuff with 1 pedal and triplets on toms that was just so inspirational at the time for me.
spz martin nice bro, I never really heard Scream will check em out. Awesome he’s got punk rock roots!
Dave will always be my favourite person on earth, true legend
It’s like Dave is actually playing the drum set with the audio! He’s in his own world, a world full of rock solid drum set solos and good looks!
He just has musical talent flowing through his veins.
Was just going to check it out and watch a couple of minutes....but....Watched it all!! Very impressive!!!
Same story here lol
I watch this once every few weeks.. I am amazed every time..Dave is so incredibly talented. And drug free too. Much respect. Inspiring to say the least.
The raw pure talent of this man is amazing. My all time favorite song.
The sound of that kit is insane -
Marc Eckstein which one?? Lollll
..some Soundgarden-esque licks in there too! Takin it back to Seattle!
Smooth, tasteful, raunchy, pocket perfection!
Love this.. The last 5 minutes BLOW THE MIND. All the subtle changes to the riffs alone deserves a trophy. Albums with "movements' need to make a comeback. I hear vocals ALL OVER THIS
It's really interesting that he sits at such different heights behind the kits.
It’s a life’s goal to get to share a stage with this guy someday. Or even just sit down and jam with him. Seriously has been one of my favorite musicians since 1991.
Sometimes it's good to see things like this. To remind us just how incredible of a drummer Dave is. And artist. Just amazing work. I get so caught up in the Foo I forget sometimes.
It's been a joy watching Dave evolve into a truly fantastic drummer.
Who Doesn't Love Grohl ? Rarely do we have a chance to see a "living" legend in Rock & Roll !
What about Ozzy?
Dave once said in a interview that he hated click tracks but was forced by the producer or record company to record the album with click tracks felt it hugely improved his drumming.
You can see that he is having fun
I'm 61 years old, this is what I grew up listening to.
Really good stuff
What an amazing display of talent Dave can really rock the drums one of the best ever! 🤘
No words . Just legend !!! Thankyou Dave
Okay but wait, he doesn't wear headphones. So that means he recorded the drums first, without click track or guide track. The whole thing was in his head, including all metric modulations, accents, dynamics, tempo's....etc. Really insane.
Someday people will realize the genius of this man... born to create music!
@BennnitoMr He probably created the music to go with the drums. He was just jamming on drums, then composed the music to the result.
Sorry, he has ear pieces in dude.
@@scottmedford3263 Check 6:20 I can't see them there man, would be the most logical explanation of course.
@@paulvandecalseijde5629 I believe I can see a small black inner ear monitor in his left ear between 7:00 and 7:15, but I could be mistaken.
Just amazing just completely stunning and gorgeous playing. Rocks Rocks Rocks!!!!
Drums reunited to see this guy drumming. They all agreed to be hit. All said Thanks! Come back again!
incredible drumming... Dave is such a legend. On a side note, I cant even fathom how much those kits and vintage mics are worth. Drool.
you ain't lying dude !
This is pure magic!
The first 10ish minutes are so pleasing to my ears. I mean the WHOLE thing is pleasing but man that first 10ish minutes are so impressive with the range in aggressive and soft tones, makes for such a damn great jazzy/hazey, blues/rock sound with that hint of punk in there! Overall just my favorite type of sound and Dave executes it the best!!!
Master drummer, and a master musician at that!
Drum track from memory - no music - no click - TALENT!!!!!!!
Many drummers were highly skilled, but Dave had a strong spirit, great energy, and an explosive desire... 👍👍👍
I like the RUSH vibe . Great job Dave . Hats off to another great musician
What a friggen killer first tune. I could listen to this all day.
Pure Genius! Mr Grohl, thank you for what you do....amazing!
Accurate timing of insanely skillful musician and excellent audio recording
The drums sound amazing...
I was just about to give up my dream of being a rock and roll drummer, sell my kit and throw in the towel... until I saw this. The dream survives!
Those cymbals have a beautifully warm sound to them. I like...
Dave's awesome on drums Thanks for sharing!
When the atomic clock needs adjusting they call in Dave. He ain’t no drummer.... He is the metronome.
That s what they say about drummers in general and then treat them like shit
I think that woody one is much more cheaper
They call for that Gavin Harrison for sure :)
Doesn't need a click track no more lol
or Neil Pert
This guy does everything at an ultra high level. Unbelievable talent and we're really lucky.
That's music! He still has it! Beautiful sounds!
Qué gran baterista, un MAESTRO. Impresionante trabajo. No me canso de escucharlo
A wonderful instrumental crossing so many boundaries and so smoothly. This is the kind of stuff that proves progressive rock will never die.
*well said*
It's like an odisey. Outstanding. Mindblowing. Love that.
Goosebumps watching dave play this is amazing
That ride sounds like it costs more than my college expenses
Damien Cray fun fact. It’s a ZHT ride. They were the affordable line for zildjian, but I think it has the best bell out of all the Z cymbals.
which of all?
fact is Dave could make a tin trash can lid sound good. he's the exception.
It isn’t just a typical ZHT ride though. It’s a special soundlab prototype that they made the same year Them Crooked Vultures came to be. They might have made it specifically for Dave, which I also believe he played a hand in the K FX crash.
This s an K ride for shure
The final boss vibe of that 26'' is unreal
That... was... EPIC!
Hats off, hands down. Dave has now left the building.
F**kin deep in the groove...as always.love that syncopated comfort zone.
Dave, thanks a lot for your great music. It's not only doing the thing you feel: it's much more than that. It helpes my being inspired and "learn to fly" ...
Undoubtedly American favourites, legends of alternative rock, hard rock.
Boys in general good fellows!
9:37 i know this whole video is absolutely insane, but this genuinely left me baffled.
That second transition is so badass
Dave is one of the few that you hear playing from his heart. I love it, he plays with inspiration that inspires me to grab my sticks!
You can admire the feeling and mastery of music only with visual: amazing!
The sound is so controled too, not very complex compositions but what control in sound and feeling especially with no big mistakes, in one shot (that's not how studio works in general!)!
That's really how good rock works: not very complex but very mastered gestures, a bit like dance: it's very obvious when you look at this performance, EVEN IN A STUDIO!
Here I can remember Bonham, Paice, Appice, Krupa: it is this high family of soul drummers.
By the way very well composed.
23 minute instrumental.
Thanks Dave. We'll have this forever now. Just like that.
Old Guy.
Man seeing him drum is fantastic!
Have always enjoyed his music, but this really opened up my eyes to talent I hadn't noticed before. Definitely have a new level of respect for Dave.
Do you remember that he was the Nirvana's drummer ? He's an amazing artist.
@@ldiegosousa Some people never followed Nirvana back in the day so they may not know who he is and only got to know him from Foo Fighters. I was like, what the hell, is he now going to play ''guitar and sing?'' after I knew him as an amazing punk and later grunge rock drummer. Also some millenials may not even know there was a Nirvana group that literally made history and created the whole generation of musicians coming from the nineties.

i probably do not listen to gold b/c i can not remember any of his work since Nirvana. He is with another band now.
