  • The Guardian has been working with a group of community reporters in Rochdale and Oldham who wanted to highlight the realities for women in the asylum system across Greater Manchester.
Subscribe to The Guardian on RUclips ► bit.ly/subscribegdn
Supported by the Elephants Trail the group met women stuck in the asylum backlog, women traumatised by detention and women struggling to find housing. They were all volunteering in their communities, while reckoning with a hostile climate towards refugees and asylum seekers. This film is part of a collaborative video series called Made in Britain.

I mean who should fix this? Where are they educating themselves to be able to do something? To have a nice house you need to be able to do stuff - paint the walls, do the proper conservation, be able to check heating and pipes. Who should do that work? Social housing is great as long as people know how to do their part.

‘No recourse to public funds’🤦🏾 Free house, free gas, free electrics and one wants more🤷🏾‍♀️ I’m a tad bit unsympathetic... But I do agree it’s not fair keeping people in limbo for so long. You cannot plan your life in that state.
Keep people in a detention centre until their decision has been made and all decisions must be made within 12 months.

It’s true that asylum seekers shouldn’t have to wait in limbo for their cases to be resolved. The UK has to just close their borders for now. There are other safe countries they’ve passed through in Europe on their way to Britain.

There is a really painful question we have to face though..and it's absolutely not bourne of racism. As the standard of living here is plummeting and ordinary people are being failed. We have no natural resources left, our standards of education are dismal and we cannot take every person in the world who is eligible to come. The world has become a really small place in the last 20 years and people are able to get across the world much easier than before. Now, I love being in London & being able to travel the world for the price of a tube ticket. My daughter is half African. I know that a lot of migrants start their own businesses and pay taxes and contribute. But we have to face the other side. The one that the racists latch onto. The Romanian women begging on tube trains, the people trafficking, the child exploitation and prostitution. How the violence exploded in Bristol in the 90's when a large number of Somali refugees were housed in st.pauls..those teenagers came straight from an horrific civil war to the streets of Bristol and within a short time were king of the gang culture. We have to face up to the negative side and ask ourselves, sensibly, calmly, how much we need and how much we can do. I'm not Brexiteering, saying all foreigners are bad.. but I do wonder if people like me are starting to wonder if I there isn't a problem to address?

9:16 This is what we need, for people to forget racial and ethnic biases and stereotypes and try to help them integrate. It's a little difficult for them to get started if they can't even speak our language and feed alienated from society. Brits have to understand that a lot for these people are here to stay and it would be better if we could just help one another and learn from each other to bring back a sense of community.
I've been noticing far too many people take in everything media companies make stories about which are all paid for by the government to support their own political views and brainwash the masses into voting for them. What we need is to actually ask people themselves and not rely on biased media outlets who make you afraid of foreigners, we're all the same species.
