- David Perrett spent his career working on human faces -- how they are processed in our brain and what cues we use to judge attractiveness, health, trust and leadership. He has developed state-of-the-art image analysis and transformation techniques to define facial shape and colour cues, and 3-D computer graphics for testing the attributions we make to faces. He is the author of "In Your Face: The New Science of Human Attraction".
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
when you're giving a Ted Talk at 8 but playing Laser Tag at 9
sean houlihan
Or going to the seniors rave @ the nursing home
hi yes hahaha
Hilarious ahaha
I replied above to Tobia Apolloni’s post, “came to the video, stayed for the pants” with this:
“Love the comment. I’m concerned that a 10 year old girl somewhere is missing a purple shirt, but I can’t figure out where he got the pants.”
I’d like to thank you for letting me know that it’s laser tag apparel. I could have spent a significant amount of time (~18m50s) thinking about this. Thank you for sparing me the agony. I can now pay full attention to the “facial profiling” of shady folks. 🖖
Seán Houlihan 😂😂😂😂😂
Came for the talk, stayed for the pants
Thank you for my one hard laugh today.
Considering the color of... half of his hair, it looks like he goes to raves.
Liv P i know its wtong but i read that as 'thanks for my first hard -on of thr day'
i reread qnd thought well thats a fine way to compliment something
Exactly the opposite for me! I wanna leave but the talk seems interesting!
Tobia Apolloni lol totally!
This guy is dressed like a random character generator
Underratec comment
😂🤣
Sims townies be like
mahchymk93 no lies
I thaught he was going to a rave after
this guy is a Pokémon trainer for sure.
hahahahaha u made my day
I knew I saw him from somewhere.
Professor Oak
Gym Leader* give the guy some credit.
Scientist electric type.
After the presentation, David got back into his time machine and went home to the 80's.
I was thinking of him looking more like a late 90’s raver
i've always wondered what happens to people who dont change their style as they grow older.
+Miranda George Young or old, those pants scream lack of taste with a pocket full of cash.
jimprjayp several pockets in fact
Miranda George lmao 😂
Miranda George 😂😂😂😂😂
celtic tree I'm not sure if he's attempting to make a statement with his clothing? According to own theories he'd be dismissed as untrustworthy with his clownish appearance. Not just his clothing but his hair style.Seems stuck in his teen year's along with his T-shirt.
Oh wow, just noticed half of his hair is bright red. He's got a groovy style.
Sigmund Freud 😂😂
Solaris Baby i thought it was just the lighting.........
no hes an anime fan hes todoroki shouto
@@sigmundfreud1808 "🤣
Y. Readman unfortunately... he’s really this goofy.
Tbh I don’t care how he’s dressed and what pants he’s wearing, he’s got his unique style and I respect that. What’s important here is how interesting this topic is and what a good public speaker he is, explaining everything in a very simple language for people who haven’t studied perception/evolutionary psychology to be able to understand it, hence the “fruit & veggies” chat.
Did he dye one side of his hair red to signal good health? False advertising.
hahaha
Sarah Trachtenberg 😂😂😂👏👏
Lol I see I wasn't the only one thinking it XD
I think its just he was looking too much like a target and shot by a paintball gun on his way in for the lecture.
It’s actually flamingo pink.
Ok, at first I thought his clothes were part of the lecture, and later on he would talk about how your clothes affect your "trustworthability", but...that never happened. So I thought: why the hell would someone go to a TED dressed like that?
Such things are probably all academic for an Appearance and Embodiment lecturer / expert.
Ramon Oliveira he also has rad hair on the left of his head
It's the right of his head.
True also you get extra points for your White Pony icon
When you go to a RAVE and remember at the last minute you've to do a talk on phrenology.
His clothing and hair choices are FABULOUS
Gabriella Piazza Umberger not even a little bit
john martin Someone didn't get the joke
Gabriella Piazza Umberger
As a gay guy. That is NOT fabulous
Where the hell did this guy buy his pants?
cgreg Lenfound Thrift Shop😂
hell
+cgreg Lenfound - He is an eccentric person. Generally, eccentric people want to get your attention because they are shy and have a lack of confidence.
Rubbish what about a huge lean faced bodybuilders,
cgreg Lenfound *CYBERDOG*
Did he say something about fruit and veg?
yes yes he did
Samuel Blues I outa here
This guy is so fascinating. I never wanted to speech to end. I hope he is a professor of Psychology!
He is a professor at St Andrews
He’s teaching me this semester!
I did a research paper on cues trust and dominance for a senior project, we looked at face width a bit too but other reliable cues to indicate trust are eyeglasses, smiles, Duchenne smile is slightly better but really doesn't matter, and also the most interesting, being pictured in an affluent background. Overall interesting stuff with huge implications for how we perceive people in court cases, public figures, potential dates, strangers etc.
comments are better than the video. 😃😆😅😂
Tampatec you are so right😂😂
I thought the same
nah
My 1995 self needs the raver pants back, please! Thanks! =)
hahaha this is actually one fashion style I could see myself wearing.
forget hipster... this is what it is about.
1995. 1995 was more fun I am sure than the late 1800's were anyway.
This guy is obviously a free thinker, and the interesting research that he does is a reflection of that. I wish there were more outside of the box thinking creative types in positions to do these types of studies...
Every time this man says fruit and veg I lose a year of my life.
Goodbye
Charlie Jupiter LMAO XD!
Charlie Jupiter rip
Every time you fail to eat fruit and veg, you actually do lose time off your life.
Postprandial oxidative stress is mediated by a diet high in antioxidant rich foods. Google it -- there are some excellent randomized controlled trials on the subject.
I seriously lost it after this comment. My dog is not happy. Thanks Charlie Jupiter !!
i think his outfit was specifically chosen for his talk. he IS talking about appearances and judgement, people.
People don't get it though. Read the comments.
Wow - mind blown
His attire is smart because you're all talking about it and will remember him and what he spoke about. I will remember him as the man who probably fell asleep against a newly painted wall. I will also remember this odd facial distinction stuff, a friend once told me that men with more protruding chins and heavy brow bones were more likely to cheat and be unfaithful etc. which I found strange but this face reading thing has some interesting points.
This professor who works on human faces does literally everything he can to distract us from looking at his FACE. (Those pants, that hair, like WTF is going on?)
Ravyn Skye I think he thinks that if he goes to the extreme of wearing clothes of someone decades younger than him that it will change our perception of his age to him being younger than he is. However I’m it only draws attention to his age and his insecurities around it.
Casperian you’re way off the mark loool
Thanks for your comment. You make my blood circulate and I look 10 years younger at a moment because I laugh so much. What you say is hilarious and true. LOL
Guys talking about how people judge appearances and here you all are doing the exact same thing. It's like irony doesn't get you.
AwesoMESS I think the fact that guy studies impact of looks and chooses heavily distracting outfit is even more ironical. Like, he is not trustworthy as a specialist or he wants to be perceived as not trustworthy as a specialist.
Interesting. And for some reason I loved how he is dressed. Like you need a really daring n confident person to be dressed like him and give a presentation. ~
I love how much attention someone who looks a little bit different than the rest is given, it's an interesting human behaviour
since incorporating 15+ raw fruit and vegetables in my diet I get asked in the middle of winter have you been on holiday and I get so much more interest so It's so right that it increases your attractiveness! If that isn't motivation to get healthy what Is!? Eat your greens Ladies and Gentlemen and preferably raw!
Melanie Howes I've been vegan for a while, so I obviously eats tons of fruits and veggies. I honestly have never thought to check my pallid and compare it. I'll have to look at old photos in similar lighting and let ya know how much of a change I've seen. I'm curious to see if some people see a much subtler skin coloration difference than others.
Melanie Howes can you give advice on how to do that ? I try really hard but i can't seem to be able to integrate any more than maybe five portions of fruits and vegetables.... and that's on a good day
I would say the single best way to get a good portion of fruit and veg is to juice it ...one green juice a day does more then keep the doctor away and check out FullyRawKristina and JohnRose you tube channels Raw is the healthiest way too!
Wesley you gotta get a lot greens for the colour though! I have it all from dandelion and all the wild greens i can eat and my home grown stuff is unbeatable!
Melanie Howes i ate raw bacon does that count?
I can't keep my eyes off his pants!
His wardrobe don't love him no more. (aye)
Man,I also thought he did Look At Me Joke, then I found it to be from 2015
DáŇa Great Scott you're right
That guy was ahead of his time
who wants to live a few years longer my body still has so many years in it
This man needs to be on television
The club wont be able to handle me once I've finished eating these 13 kilos of carrots. #lit #swag #100%
This presentation was really helpful..Thank you for sharing this
how much is a "portion" of fruit and veg? i feel like i don't even eat 8 "portions" of anything in a day o_o
Portion = size of your fist
Honest Signalz That can't possibly be true. Some people eat 13 times the size of their fist in "fruit and veg"? My fist is the size of a large apple. I don't think I could physically eat 13 portions of anything.
If you eat almost no animal products, you will find no trouble packing in 13 servings of fruit and veg each day. I get about ten servings of veggies alone and a variable amount of fruit.
I'm in the U.S. and I find the term "veg" to be strange. We usually say the whole word. "Vag" on the other hand is our shorthand for vagina.. so when I wasn't completely distracted by his ridiculous pants, I was giggling when he said "veg" ( I hear "Vag")
Mark Youneva omg me too!! He kept saying it over and over.... just sounds wrong and extremely distracting.
Only makes me hungry for some vag now.
Same
in the UK we say 'veg' a lot :)
you mean 'vege'
I couldn't take this guy seriously with his hair and clothes...But damn, now I want some fruit and veg.
MValdez1984 o
Everything in this presentation is amazing...
I love this guys style.
HIs research and talk inspired me to blend myself a berry smoothie. More fruits and veg from now on!
That was wonderful, very fascinating!
The example that stands out in my mind is the JFK vs. Nixon debate.
Well it's not the best example since it wasn't in color but I think that debate says more about camera etiquette and posturing. People who listened on the radio thought Nixon won, but people who watched saw an uncomfortable, sweaty candidate who didn't make eye contact.
Oh shit, I'm short and wide face. 😢😢😢
🤦♀️🤦♀️ you are more than a body ❤
He looks kinky.
lol wtf lol
Amis Stiti yeah I got those vibes from him as well
his extremely low amount of body fat despite his age and all the talk about visuality and healty lifestyle ... you can clearly see that he is kinda obsessed with this theme, i would even say a bit mad...
Egon Gone aren't we all
True, but most of us live out his or her obsession withihn themselves in the mind. He has the urge to share it with other people.
when you get in from a rave and remember you have to do a tedx talk
The message in a nutshell: "being orange is sexy, eat your veg to go orange"
Hocu tako cu i ja
I think you missed the real message. Don't make yourself look like a target or you might get shot with a paintball on one side of your head.
Gota love this guy
Interesting talk. i appreciate it so much! don't mind all those comments about your looks... Amazing talk!
His clothes and style you guys, that’s just him being him. S’all good! 👍🏻
Very interesting, this is my favorite tedx talk
Robbie Rotten has the longest chin. He is the most trustworthy.
great video for great mind
this makes me cry
LOVE this!
fascinating topic!
I was waiting for a juggling act..
I like his outfit. Cheers to individuality!
I love how he probably ran an experiment with how many viewers took him not as seriously vs if he wore “sciencey stuff”. Don’t judge people !
This man is a genius! 🤔How to keep the audience engaged ? 🙆💁♂️Pull this little number out and slap on,bright pink hair color.
He looked in his wardrobe that morning, wondering what to wear, and then decided to wear everything
his pants are very interesting
Instranet my small faced compatriot
Drinking game: take a shot whenever you hear "fruit and veg"
Alain Wirth brooo.
Don't do that. Alcohol poisoning kills!
One of those instances where different studiess seem to give opposite results on the same question. I remember distinctly having heard about a study (or even several ones) where slim or long faces where the ones that were judged less trustworthy and round ones were rated trustworthier. Now, I know that " I've heard of a study" is not an exact reference. But it points me to believe that findings might not be without strong contradictions in this field of research and people shouldn't adopt these theses into their everyday life.
nanu1980 how they define round may be different than how this study defined wide.
Yes! He’s in a direct opposition to what Dr. Mike Mew is preaching and the whole concept of mewing, which literally states the opposite
Very informative video.
those pants are amazing where can I buy a pair?
In the trash
I think you have to get them from the future.
dammm... the internet has sure brought about all the crazies and their ideas for everyone to see and hear that is for sure.
Guys outfit is simply breathtaking
those pants are really healthy, just look at the colors
im attracted to pale people though.
Gregory Masters Same. This video is a western percepective. They think the yellow and tan skin is more attractive.
Gregory Masters pale people also have undertones
Someone who has very pale and a bit peachy shin looks healthy and better than someone with pale grayish skin.
Japans people don't have grayish pale skin. They have milky pale skin. That's why red lips look move pleasing.
tan is not the same as carotenoid pigmented skin
I love pale skin with that slightly light purple/light red cheeks, and just tan when it looks like bronze👌, not this yellow or solarium orange tan 🤢
he makes me proud of Ghent ! 💅
For me the one from right seems more brighter therefore healthy.
Pants more exiting than my life
How does this guy account for cultures that value very pale white skin... Like my husband's culture (he's East Asian). They literally like women who have "milk-skin".
Ravyn Skye I was wondering that too because I'm Irish and no matter what I eat my skin would never, ever get a tan or look yellow. It's blue toned skin. Nothing is gonna change that.
Its mentioned in the talk. They found the same outcome when they showed Asian faces to Asian participants. They also found a difference between tanned skin and skin with yellow undertones. Tanned skin didn't reach the same results.
All skin has an undertone, even pale white skin. Anyone can have a skin color preference but mostly everyone will prefer a "healthy" undertone to said skin tone. It's not about the presence of melanin, it's about the carotinoids. He talked about this @6:27 to @8:46.
I like my white skin
It's a cultural sign that you are wealthy and don't have to work. It's 100% cultural and not based on health
Very interesting and guess that explains why many people use filters and editing.
His outfit is life
I just scroll down to c if any one commented on his outfit .... Sure you did
well done.well done
i was looking for this video but all i could remember was the weird old guy with the crazy pants. i randomly clicked on this video thinking the title was interesting and BAM HERE YOU ARE! those pants!
Very interesting!
Really interesting
Good quality information, I'm going to have a portion of vegetables, caratonoids. Celery raises testosterone & focus of attention, time to grow more vegetables.
Bro this guy dress like an extra from Blade Runner
Those pants...
The part about wider (more masculine) faces making you less trustworthy surprised me the most. Especially since everyone since "everyone" accuse women of being the deceitful ones, so you would think more feminine looking people were seen as less trustworty.
Then again I think nobody should be jugded that much on their face alone (or their gender for that sake) as there are many individual varieties and its just not fair to jugde someone for something out of their control
I think it’s becomes of evolution, mothers from our childhood where the ones protecting us, hence we think women are “more” caring. And men who topically went hunting or working, where the ones “fighting”. Plus high testosterone usually correlates with impulsivity.
This man is a genius. He purposely wore those pants to increase the amount of comments in his videos which feeds the algorithm and gives the video more views.
100% of the comments are talking about his choice of outfit
I jog a mile every day, I have a strict and well-tested washing regiment, and my diet is great. And yet, I have more acne than most everyone around me. I'm more healthy than most teens, but look less so. It's fucking frustrating. I use face wash, salicylic acid, and lotion twice a day, at moderate water temp, I've cut out dairy and processed food almost entirely, I drink enough water, and I eat loads of vegetables in a widely varied and regular diet. I'm 17, and male, so I can only surmise it's hormones and genetics at work, but I'm considering medication now.
Try only taking freezing showers (Comes with boatloads of benefits, clear skin being one of them). Stop eating sugar. Its a test of willpower, Good luck
Seth R.C let me give you what worked for me. Cut out red meat, dont take creatine supplements, drink freshly squeases red juice from naturally red fruits, if none of that works use the most light antibiotic monocycline. Its not about hormones its about metabolic chages that coincide with puberty and you not adjusting diet to reduce the sudden change.
Seth R.C gotta say man, I took roaccutane for six months, best decision of my life. I used to be so acne ridden, all over me, now I only get the rare sole spot. Shit has its problems, but it helped me out so so much, worth a go imo.
Seth R.C Maybe the chemicals in the face wash are causing your skin to react? Perhaps look at more natural options. Also, at 17 we all look weird and awkward and break out often, don't sweat it! Look into intermittent fasting, some people report better skin. As another commenter suggested, reduce sugar intake and stay away from processed sugars. Avoid medication, it might fix your skin but will tax your body in other ways.
Seth R.C While at your age, with all the effort you're putting in, genetics is probably a major factor, you can probably reduce the acne a little more:
-The cold shower suggestion works wonders. Just blast your face with full cold water for a minute before you leave the shower, and you will have overall healthier skin (and hair too probably,) no BS.
- Possibly cut down on your product use. I've actually gotten better results from salicylic acid by only applying it once a day and cleansing with cold water at the other end of the day. Something about the self-produced oils, methinks; moisturizer lotion never seemed to work very well.
Came straight here after the rave.
His outfit looks like it's going to transform him into a mad scientist
You know exactly that he went on a rave after holding this Ted talk.
I wish I could pull off a pair of pants like that
Yeah...he doesn't pull it off either
Now that's why you buy TWO packs of that hair color, just in case the first pack finishes halfway through the project and the shop's closed...or moved.
His legs move in a strange unbalanced way, I think he's cyborg
when 99% of the comments are about his outfit
And the rest is about fruit and veg 😂
I love body dysmorphia.
Super interesting
This video doesn't even require reading the comments, you can see the people in the audience looking to their left and snickering.
I keep hearing that height is a good thing in society but I don't think this is true. I'm 6'5" and I feel like people treat me as an outsider as a result instead of embracing me for it. I think people may be intimidated by it as well so they don't want to talk to me. I have never felt like my height was a good thing.
I think probably after about 6'3'' you reach diminishing returns on the height advantage.
Yeah. Like 6'3" puts you at the high end of normal, and 6'5" puts you in the "abnormally tall" bracket and it's just too much.
I’ll switch with bro I’m 5’4
People in my country are short(5'4-5'5) and one of my 6'4 friends is basically in depression and gave up all hope of getting a girl just because how tall he is.
I reckon thats hott.. wanna have tall babies?
this is really odd to me because I really prefer pale skin. I mean by an enormous margin.
Yeah but there is a difference in hue and thats the important part: is it a grayish, yellow pale or a more toned pale (like red cheeks)
Prefer ur own raCe
that pink flamingo to pink hair jumpcut.
Wide faces are correlated to testosterone levels, too, which are correlated to agressivness.
So as a guy, if you’re face isn’t wife you have low testosterone?
@@gm836 no that's not a guarantee. It's just a correlation
which one better leader? left or right?
i chose'd the unhealthy style, cus she looked more happy on the eyes (therefor i thought the other person where more depressed, and thereof living a less healthy lifestyle). i never thought of being more pale, that to me doesn't have to do with health.
-to me i think the pale version looks more healthy :)
-a more read face to me looks more like a stressed person :)
-i see a calm/peace person with the more so called pale skin :), thereof i think they where/are more healthy, :)
How much do you save for deleting "tables"?
