Happy 10th Anniversary of Godzilla (2014). The movie that not only brought the Godzilla franchise back from hibernation, but also started the Monsterverse. I remember seeing the movie in theaters when it came out and I loved it.

If the next Monsterverse movie does focus on Godzilla then I hope it will have a more serious tone than it's predecessors.
Godzilla 2014 is my all time favorite Monsterverse movie and I can't believe it's 10 years old!

Even though it's a Godzilla movie, I also watch it as a three different movie genres in one. A Godzilla version (nature balance) , a human version (disaster adversity) and a MUTO version (tragic love story). It is my favorite movie of the Monsterverse.

Thank you so, _so_ much for mentioning both the color problems and the Takarada scene. The former is just stupid to have never been fixed and the latter (though honestly completely inconsequential) is insulting to Takarada, Edwards, and fans to have not even released the scene as a bonus feature or on RUclips.

Glad you mentioned the god awful home release. Maybe the reason why I’ve never been able to appreciate this movie like the other is due to rewatches being impossible thanks to the horrendous colour grading. If there was one thing the monsterverse community should band together for, it would be the Takarada cut of G14 with the restored colour grading. I may not love the film but this is the introduction to the monsterverse. New fans should be able to watch the film in its proper form. Not the butchered release we have currently

Happy 10th anniversary to this very flawed but solid start to the Monsterverse ( still hate those cutaways)🥳🎊🎉 1:02 as grounded as you can be with a concept like Godzilla. 3:06 how do you "accidently cause a tsunami? It's Godzilla he doesn't care if humans are in the way or not he's on a mission he's not here to save people. This isn't the 70s Godzilla. 8:48 that works when the franchise has been established. Not in the start of your cinematic universe. This is movie one so it comes off as Godzilla being a supportive character then the main focus. 10:55 I say good

What a wonderful review of Godzilla 2014!
As always, thank you so very much for the videos.
I started thinking about favorite" movies, best movies, best scenes, (worst scenes,) and the ones I watch the most.
The ones I've watched the most are: Original Godzilla, Shin Godzilla (sub-titled), Shin Godzilla (dubbed), and soon (I hope) Godzilla Minus one.
Favorite scenes: Ending of "Son of Godzilla" (1967) (always reaching for the tissue). Final Wars the final Battle.
Favorite Music: Godzilla's Theme, Godzilla's entrance with roar (best might be "Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla" (1974), Blue Öyster Cult "Godzilla" (1977).
Favorite Godzilla-Verse Movie… All of them. (Thanks dad for your company making the VHS (Ampex).) (And thanks to my biological father for getting nuked! (U.S. Sailor exposed to Castle Bravo, and recently told by doctors he was 30 years beyond "life expectancy" and still going!)

I love the cinematography of this movie, its scale and its Jaws/Jurassic Park approach. But yeah, Brody was a boring protagonist, and the movie focused much more on the MUTO, leaving Godzilla as a side character in his own movie. I didn't mind his little screen time, but he's never the protagonist of the plot like in KOTM or even GvK, more a deuse ex machina (that I can accept in a crossover movie like GxK, but not in its own story). Still, one of my favorite Godzilla movie.

Honestly my favorite film in the Monsterverse still upon rewatch. Its an excellent disaster film that absolutely immerses its audience and makes the concept of giant kaiju fighting somehow incredibly believeable. It has its flaws but honestly its highs are outstandly high, and the movie really has stood the test of time so far.

@@DMan1954 The connection between the two remaining protagonist. The Muto's took from both. Ford's parents as well as Godzilla's last ancestor(s). One fighting to avenge and the other protect. In the end, Godzilla was losing and it was Ford who saved him with the nest explosion. In return, Godzilla saved him on the boat. The realism hurt the ability to build that human bond, but the scene between them looking at each other in the street, as the dust envelops Godzilla, was a great nod

I was cautiously optimistic going into this. I was not going to set my hopes high after what happened in 1998. But thankfully, Gareth Edwards brought back my faith that Hollywood can indeed do a very good G movie. And while others lament on the early death of Bryan Cranston’s character, I was disappointed that Juliette Binoche, acclaimed international actress & Oscar winner, gets an even earlier demise! (her character basically had nothing else to do but die early!).
And hell yes, Legendary try to bring back the theatrical color grading!

  • @Firedrake-SP

I liked the tone of this film. But the film had bad writing in it:
The writer killed off Joe Brody to soon. Joe Brody should have lived throughout the film.
Godzilla could have just dive underneath the Golden Gate Bridge instead of crashing into it.
This film didn't show enough Godzilla in it.
The film was too dark to see the kaiju fight.
The shows too much on the human characters.

Happy 10th year Anniversary of the Monsterverse and of Godzilla 2014! 🥳
I'll never forget the day that I first saw Godzilla on my Wii U baffled by that ear piercing roar and terrified from that fearsome design. I could not stop replaying every scene he was in just to embrace how immensely epic he was to me. I wish I saw this movie in theaters cause back then I was not really into loving a particular franchise. Superheroes seemed to be the most interesting theme but I was still not fully invested when everyone else was. I was more into cartoons and didn't like realism, so I wanted something that was more fantasy based, something that would grab my attention, and scream that is cool no matter what and Godzilla was that figure.
The movie itself is also amazing and what a performance it brought after Godzilla's retirement/embarrassment. Nearly every shot with Godzilla is iconic and memorable, the cgi was incredible given the time it was made in and holds up to what current films wish they had, the score was unique, and the sound design made it were it felt like these things would actually exist.

I was lucky to get an advanced screening when I was stationed at Camp Lejeune North Carolina when I was in the Marine Corps. It was a small theater and the sound wasn’t insanely great but I will never ever forget that initial reveal at the Honolulu airport. I was blown away and the audience cheered and roared with the exact same emotion. This, along with king of the monsters, are the only movies that I can easily rewatch. I’m begging for a more grounded movie like this as the monster verse continues.

I really like this film, and I love realistic Godzilla, but it is so dull and boring to me. It’s not because there’s not enough Godzilla, Im glad Minus One has proved that Godzilla dosen’t need to be there so often but because the characters and plot are just so uninspired. It attempts to harken back to 1954 but without the interesting characters and themes of that film. It dosen’t say anything important, and not every Godzilla film needs to have an important message but when attempting to go back to the grounded and realistic style I think it really goes a long way. But like you said, the cinematography and sound design of this film is really great, probably the best in the franchise, I just wish the characters and story could have been interesting. As it is right now this movie feels more spectacle than substance, which, and this may be a hot take, I feel is most Gareth Edwards films.
All that said, I thought the film was pretty good, and for its revitalization of the Godzilla brand i’m very thankful for it. And this video was good as well, im really liking this series, keep up the good work

I like to headcanon that despite his species originating from the Permian Period, Godzilla is only 2 Million Years old. In the original Godzilla film from 1954, Dr. Yamene stated that Godzilla is 2 million years old. Plus Dagon could have been his father, gives him a solid reason for his hatred of the MUTOs.

@@DMan1954 Him being born 2 million years ago would make sense because Dagon was described to be way older according to Serizawa. He managed to outgrow Dagon in size due to being the pinnacle of his race. Think of Dagon as Bardock and Godzilla as Goku.

this was the Best experience i had watching a movie on the big screen back in 2014, the Popcorn were Great, the excitement was at it´s hight after a long LOONG wait for a movie and of coruse it was Godzilla, the First REAL AMERICAN MADE Godzilla movie for me and honestly Alot of New and Old fans alike and i can say, it wasn´t disappointing in the slightest,
alot of People got introduced to the king of the monsters via this movie in Recent memory and i never Thought we would get a whole MCU like Cinematic universe out of this one movie 10 years later, while it Dose have it´s Flaws and indeed lately i have Said Ford Bordy is someone Godzilla could just Step on and nobody would batter an Eye, the Movie still got a special in my heart and the Whole Hype for this Movie was Worth it back in the day and i think I can also thank this movie for getting more into 3D Animation alongside the Hobbit, i do Remember recreateing the Kiss of Death Move on Yossi(Back then called Yoshi Cupcrake) vs The Weegee Monster 2, i also used the movie for that project too as well as haveing a Model i did of this Godzilla that´s Still sketchfab and i Posted it on November 14 in 2014 to that site too,
Happy to share the link to that one here then, it´s an older model of mine so not as good as i can do things now BTW
    sketchfab.com/3d-models/godzilla-2014-rig-bfe50cf143f647ef802a3736ad4893e5
It´s Also Worth noteing while not useing THIS model, The 2014 version of Godzilla also made a cameo in Quoll Alone where is Skittles To celebarte the Anime Godzilla movie planet of the Monsters and help hype up Godzilla King of the Monsters. A Funny thing to consider tho is that the Studio MPC have given us the most realstic Take on Godzilla in edition to the best Dinosaurs in prehistoric planet 8 years later too, i would not be surprised it that played a part in why legacy of monsters ended up on apple TV.
I Have Seeing your Review of it was something i was looking forwards to ALOT because of the nostalgia and memories i had for this Hidden Gem of a Movie and This comment would be long enough if i had said everything but Wanna cut it short here but saying this, It´s hoenstly Kinda Funny How this Movie might have Agedd Better Then the fellowing Year´s Jurassic World and Star Wars the Force Awakens and might even Prove how strong a franchise Godzilla.
the Best soundtrack of the Monsterverse without doubt comes from this movie and it would only be Topped by king of the monsters,
Happy 10 Years to Godzilla 2014, a special movie that holds a special place in my heart.

Fantastic work! While I have my own issues with this film, I too think of it as almost a stand alone picture. My biggest gripe was the sound efx when Kaiju would crash into a building, I could only hear faint whispers of glass breaking, or the footfalls of G not being loud and thunderous , explosions were not as loud as I like. But these are petty complaints.
