It's a solid show for newcomers and monster fans alike, sure it may break some canon stuff, but it's not that bad. Despite it having little action and some episodes dragging a bit. I like the overall story even the slow ones as well. Great review dman!!!
I don't know about newcomers though. Nowadays people want something engaging and active and the slow burn effect with the irritating modern elements might kinda prevent people from watching it, especially if they're waiting weekly.
Great characters in the past with Lee shaw bridging everything while the stuff in modern 2015 is effy to weak to say the least. And at times can be very slow. But when things kick off they kick off. I hope the second season can learn from this season flaws and improve them. 6:22 I'm surprised that she didn't know her sister was a agent working for a organization that hunts giant monsters
I loved the mystery overtones for the first half of the series I wish they had continued the military conspiracy atmosphere for longer it fits the monster verse so well!
I loved Monarch: legacy of the monsters and I hope and wish they do a second season of it. But if you haven’t pointed out the continuity issues with the main movies in the most Monsterverse I wouldn’t have figured it out. So really good and detailed analysis overall!!!
It sagged in the middle and I found a lot of the stuff with the sorta-hollow earth they visit to be overly convoluted buuuut when Monarch hits, it hits hard.
@@DMan1954 I concur that place feels muchore mysterious and unique compared to the mostly regular jungles of Hollow Earth. Axis really feels like an alien planet.
Great review man! I agree I enjoyed the past story a lot more too but liked how it all came full circle towards the end. I also really liked the axis mundi and its time skipping effects which gave the world and kaiju a supernatural attribute that is found in Biblical and other ancient cosmologists. Hopefully a season 2 can patch up some things and they avoid world building errors
I do like that this doesnt de-canonize Godzilla: Aftershock, given the use of both the GareGoji and Doughe Goji, and given Aftershock takes place only a couple months after G14, and most of MLOM's present storyline takes place in 2015, it still works!!
I have no idea where the rumor came from that this erased that comic. It’s just people clickbaiting. Even if the show runners admitted they didn’t read the comic, as you said, they completely avoided it. So it works just fine
@@DMan1954 yeah I honestly don't know where it came from either they said there was evidence that Aftershock was decanonized but the "evidence" they gave contradicted the argument
Didn´t See That many episodes of this but Honestly wish it was A Whole Movie, this would had been amazing that way and it honestly feels like what would happene if Toho made a Monsterverse Movie.
I really loved this series. And honestly, I'm glad you don't need to watch it to understand movies. A series in a cinematic universe should work like this, filling the gaps between movies and expand its universe where the movies can't.
I completely agree. Although I do wish it had a little more inner connectivity. There’s no mention of any of these characters, Axis Mundi, time dilation, or Hollow Earth portals all over the Earth in any of the films. That makes this show feel like it exists in a bubble and makes it disconnected from the films
@@DMan1954 we'll see how they'll continue with the axis mundi story in the second season. Who knows... maybe it will be destroyed, or else, or maybe in future movies it will be aknowledged.
I think the problem people have with this show is their confusing of moralizing with criticism. They seem to think that because Cate was unfaithful to her girlfriend, closed off and snappy towards other people, and opened herself up to connecting with her half-brother's ex-girlfriend, that all makes her a bad character because in their mind, the protagonist of a story is supposed to be likable and someone the audience identifies with. And they think because the show depicts things like unfaithfulness, that means it endorses them - which is media illiteracy. I've seen people done it with another show called Terriers: ruclips.net/video/gwNCJ07ZNHk/видео.html Other than that, I'll admit Episode 7 is the most inconsistent one, but that Apex reveal at the end did make it worth sitting through. And I'll admit Kentaro should have given more to do, but the show seems to be more biased towards Cate.
I watched and didn't care for this series, tried caring for the modern characters, wasn't as invested in them as the ones in the past, at least its last episodes were kinda fun. All in all, even without the woke crap, this series is not something I'll likely rewatch
Had this show just been in the 50s it would’ve been great, but it’s weighed down by an extremely concerning lack of continuity and attention to detail, along with the main cast of the modern plot line being so insufferable
I like the main cast in the modern day but agree it can weigh the past story down. And I really hope next season they have a better understanding of canon and continuity
I think a problem with the monsterverse is that the films feel too american. I understand american-ism will seep into any work created in america, but for a character/series based out of Japan, it never felt right to me. These films felt more like something in line with michael bay's transformers films or your typical MCU film, not Japanese Tokusatsu films. I'd say the only american kaiju film to come (somewhat) close to a more Japanese feel was Pacific Rim. It's the only american kaiju film of recent times I like, since it knows how to handle monster action and not focus on bland human characters, unlike the disappointing monsterverse.
@@Godzilla-jr5gi Those were originally American, so an American feel is natural. But when it comes to Godzilla or Ultraman, it's a different story. The way Japanese stories are structured and expressed is quite different from American ones. I say American because Hollywood is different from European story telling. American storytelling - more specifically Hollywood - has gotten quite predictable with its three act structure and same few plotlines/character archetypes they seem to do for every film now.
Let's see an anime profile picture of an underage minor in a bra yep that is some serious red flags and I think the police and fbi need to check your hard drive
I still don't understand why we didn't just focus on Monarch or in the past entirely for the story. The elements it had were engaging and gave what fans wanted even when Godzilla wasn't on screen. I'm also hoping, though not expecting, that we get a LOT more kaiju screentime because Apple TV made an entire dinosaur cgi documentary series in the same year as LOM so I don't see why we can't have that for the Monsterverse.
What if the ancient Scandinavians saw the Frost Vark as Nidhoggr. The dragon who chewed on the roots of the world tree. Titanus Nidhoggr. While the Ion Dragon would be seen as ancient dragon bird from Filipino mythology called the Minokawa. I have the idea of a giant polar bear titan called Titanus Nanuk and a skeletal titan called Titanus Gashadokoro.
Dude if it was called Nidhoggr I would love the lil guy. As it stands I don’t feel any kaiju has too much personality, most of that having to do with a lackluster and boring name.
ruclips.net/video/JGDu6x6rKsw/видео.htmlsi=_z1nsr1Dp7xW8D8T Awakening and Aftershock are no longer canon. Well pretty much all comics aren't canon since none matters anymore
Aftershock is canon as they have always been. It is never mentioned in a single film and wasn’t addressed in Legacy of Monsters. It doesn’t matter if the Monarch showrunners read the comic because they didn’t address any of its events within the show itself. So their out of show statements don’t hold much weight. Especially when Legendary and Michael Dougherty hold Aftershock as canon.

That is based on the notion that every piece of MV content would be part of the official canon. The way I see it is akin to how George Lucas treated the Old EU: he shrewdly left the EU up in the air in terms of it being canonical to the star wars mythology because there were so many different artists and writers and stories coming into the effort, which meant that by any law of averages, there were going to be stories that absolutely suck. So Lucas Film calling the expanded universe a harmless buffet that had no bearing on the main star wars films allowed fans to breathe easier when a comic or book completely sucked.
