  • New Toyota Fortuner review, Well 2016 Fortuner review.
Back at the start of 2016 we purchased our brand new GX Fortuner. A lot has changed and been modified since then, but here we are 5years and 150,000 km along and still enjoying the Fortuner.
This isn’t a stats and figures review this is my (Caleb HGT) opinion from using my Fortuner nearly every day in the real world. Commuting, touring, tough 4wding and everything in-between.
The Toyota Fortuner is one of the most comfortable cars I’ve ever owned. We do a lot of decent length trips and even after a 1000 km 10 hour plus day I find I still get out of the Fortuner at the end feeling good.
    Space and versatility.
By no means is the Fortuner a massive 4wd, but yet its surprisingly roomy. The space has been well thought out. Up front you have a good roomy driving position. The second row can easily fit 3 children or two adults comfortably. With the third it is a little tight leg wise but good for children. The 2nd row can slide forward to even out the space.
When it comes to storage the Fortuner isn’t lacking. There are cup holders and bottle holders everywhere, two glove boxes, a centre console and little storage holes all throughout. The 3rd row seats store upswept so this give more storage height in the rear. Also the option to easily remove one or both to create you version of the ultimate rear tourer.
    Reliability
I’ve had a few things go wrong in my 5 years, but nothing that’s ever made me think this needs to go.
    • Clutch started to slip - After I chipped it, so probably my fault
    • Dropped a sway bar link and busted a CV boot - definitely my fault
    • Bent a rear trailing arm - possibly my fault. It was after 4.5 years of hard 4wding
    • Water pump started to leak - Toyota replaced out of warranty no questions
The dreaded Toyota DPF issues. This has been a talking point on Toyota reliability for the last few years. Me personally, I have had no issues with my DPF. Toyota did replace it under warranty, but I had had no issue leading up to or since replacement. I do think this Is because I only rarely do short trips, so the system always gets hot and goes through the cycles as intended.
    Modifiable & 4WD-able
As a capable 4wd there are now a million options available to make your Fortuner a tough 4wd. from bull bars to sliders and everything in-between there are plenty of aftermarket accessories available.
As a 4wd the Toyota Fortuner has a high /low range transfer case, has a factory rear diff lock. This paired with its short wheel base and decent clearances it is a very capable 4wd. it feels light and nimble and just seems to fit anywhere. From a simple drive on the beach to a hard technical 4wd track the Fortuner doesn’t feel out of place.
    Summary
    Is the Fortuner a good
    • Family car? - yes
    • Tourer? - yes
    • Tough 4wd? - With the right modifications, Yes
Is the Fortuner the best midsize 4wd on the market? Well that will all depend on what you’re looking for. Me personally, we’ve had a great 5 years and I’d definitely buy another one. The Fortuner constantly surprised me with how capable and comfortable it can be.

I took my 2013 Mitsubishi Challenger (bottom of the range) to Fraser Island last month. Only mod’s being A/T tyres and recovery points. Only a centre locker and made it both ways over Ngkala Rocks without bogging. I know what you mean about the fun of being the underdog.

The tuna ticked a lot of boxes for me for my first 4wd. I have driven some tracks with ease whilst others in more fancied vehicles have struggled. I have enjoyed folllowing your series because I am a fellow Tuna owner. But will stick to watching you post Tuna because I love the places you visit. :)

Damn.... you're finishing your Fortuner journey, while I am just considering starting one LOL. I currently have a Land Rover Discovery 4 and thinking about changing over from everything electronic (Air Suspension, Elec Parkbrake etc) to something more raw and easy to fix (Coils and Manual Handbrake). I've subscribed a month or two back and will watch your "back catalogue" of Videos. Good luck on your next car :) Cheers, Don (Perth, WA) (Dons Shed and Xplor Overland)

Hey mate great video's they are very helpful leading to my purchase. I'm about to pick up my 2022 gx 4tuna and want to put the rhino rack with the back bone mounts but not sure if the mounts line up with factory holes as the gx has no factory rails so therefore have no hole in the gutter? What was your experience like installing the rail system? Cheers

I would not consider any of the ute based 4x4 soccer mum cars. But I am curious how the fortuner drive experience on-road. I hear reviewers saying its real jerky and hard onroad, where you feel all the bumps etc. Is this true?? Is it just as rough as the ute?? Cos I drive a 2006 hilux, which I absolutely love but it messes up my back pretty bad.

    • @HappyGoTravel
