I'm still wondering what sadist decided to program Ninja Gaiden? Whoever he is, he definitely hates customers and/or children by making a game so tough few ever beat it and to do so you have to spend hours, days, months, years to figure out the attack patterns and glitches to get through that stroke-inducing nightmare.
In 2016 when I was 16, it took about a month to figure everything out. I even developed some of my own methods to get through hard parts. The game isn't really so hard now once you figure everything out and run forward most of time

The people who made old 80s games were really sick in the head. Imagine those meetings? Let's make the game so hard people will have high blood pressure.
He totally is. Too bad I don't have video evidence that I beat Castlevania but I did. I did use restore points on the Wii U but I don't care, I still beat it.
The Count My favorite Castlevania is the fourth edition on the SNES. I play it on my RetroPie often. Its one of my fave 2d side-scrollers of all time... :D
I've beaten Ninja Gaiden 1 today at work on my PSP. Used like 50 maybe even 100 continues but man, I've never felt such satisfaction in a long time. Not a single modern game or even PS1 era game gave me this feeling. It's crazy.
Sal S well I didn't use save states because it's like cheating, but it has it's benefits. Back in the days when I actually had NES I didn't turn it off when I went to sleep so I can continue my game in the morning, save stats removes that problem. Also it's a lot more compact to play it on psp, I can't bring a TV and console to my work :D
The "Battletoads" episode is my all-time favorite AVGN episode. It's one episode that he can't possibly be acting angry! Still a great game, but still incredibly hard!
I would argue that the Grim Reaper is actually harder than Dracula in Castlevania. Man the number of times we died either in that room before the Grim Reaper or on the Grim Reaper himself... that is until we learned about the fire bomb trick. That made the whole game easy. But before that, it was death after death after death after death after death...
How the hell could I have forgotten about Castlevania! I never got the one on the original NES, but the rerelease they put on Gameboy advance. I wanted to throw that thing like a brick 80 million times until I finally got lucky and beat it. I haven't touched or even looked at that game since. It's been so long ago I can't remember at one particular point I would call "the most difficult". From what I can remember all of that game made me want to pull my hair out after Madusa.
TooMany Gamez I could never get past the Grim Reaper. I would use the boomerang. I remember once, I thought I had defeated him and he went up in flames, but one of his scythes hit me at the last moment and I had to start over. So frustrating!
I kid you not. The grim reaper is the most frustrating boss in every Castlevania games. Luckily if you own the Wii U, you can use the save states feature. Just save the spot BEFORE meeting the grim reaper. That way, if you die, just load up the save state and try again.
How have I missed all these clip collections? They are amazing...and that electric seaweed part...I remember trying to break my controller in half as a kid and wanting to kick a hole in the TV because it literally took 17 hours to beat the fucking part.
thank you for ghosts and goblins. I had forgotten that damn thing, I played the arcade version. and omg the quarters I pumped into that bitch. love your channel
Glad that TMNT is on here... makes me feel like a gaming god for beating it as a kid. Makes me feel better for not being able to finish Super Mario Bros as a kid.
Most games today have adjustable difficulty setting, they can either be laughable easy or hellishly difficult (for example try beating Far Cry Primal on the highest difficulty, all difficulty settings are maxxed and death is permanent, you fuck up once and the save is deleted). This is a lot better than just one option: hellishly difficult
Contra 3 on Easy mode is definitely a cakewalk. Meanwhile, Dark Souls fucks you in the mouth against a stove. Back then, games had to be hard so that they couldn’t be beaten in a rental period. Newer games are hard just because they CAN be!
Uhhh, commentators? I think we forgot that this is HIS opinion, not ours. If he finds Street Fighter 2010 to be harder than Castlevania III, he finds it harder.
I've been collecting the games I had as a kid, one of which I couldn't remember the name of, but was featured here: #5, Street Fighter 2010. Thank you, AVGN!
I remember my cousin and I playing Castlevania for a whole day and finally got to Dracula. Took us about 5 hours to get there. We tried to beat Dracula for another 4 hours, but to no avail. Then the game heated up and froze on us and I never played that game again! Ah... the good ol days.
snappy happy I remember playing a game for hours and getting really far and everybody in the room had to be really careful not to touch or move the console. Like don’t even breathe on that thing. 3 ft buffer around the console.
Seeing the difficulty of these games unfold reminds me of the fictional retro games that appeared in cartoons. They were always portrayed with this nigh-invincible boss/enemy.
I beat that game. Man I must have died a thousand times each level until something happened. I just got up one day and wrecked that game. Beat it without taking a hit.
I got as far as hearing the wedding music by leaving my system on for a week straight as a kid on Dr. Jekyll and Hyde.. I knew it had to be number one lol
Gray-z I think it's just that James was super traumatized by it as a kid and then it sort of became a running joke that AVGN hates it so much so they ran with it. As for difficulty I can't testify for it myself but if Bootsy can't beat it it has to be pretty hard. I mean Bootsy has beaten Battletoads and Silver Surfer...
+Gray-z Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde isn't even the most difficult, if you consider that Ghosts 'n Goblins requires extreme precision and skill, and that you have to finish it twice with the right combination of weapons (in the right order to advance better). Dr. J and Mr. H. is a matter of understanding how the game works (mechanisms) and to try to master it. It's less unfair than Ghosts 'n Goblins, which in the arcade version was even worse, making you restart from the beginning of the level (instead than in the middle) whenever you died and had to continue. The game that must go second in this list, after Ghosts n' Goblins, is Ninja Gaiden, probably one of the hardest games I've ever seen.
i beat all of these games, but silver surfer gave me the most problems. that damn game made me punch the tv so many times and throwing the nes system down the street.
I recently beat Ninja Gaiden! No savestates, no emulators, no game genie. I beat it on an actual NES hooked up to a CRT. It feel good to finally watch those credits roll.
Ninja Gaiden 3, the return of Foster (his boss battle is laughable, he can't do anything most of the time), a BS scene where Ryu tells Irene he must go alone to the dimensional fortress because of "some super human power" or something, a final battle with a guy that has 3 forms (super armor guy, guy sticked to the wall and a giant mech with a face made of glass that casually shows his weak point: a heart). I haven't played the NG3 for newer consoles, and will probably never do unless I find it for... 5 USD.
TWO QUESTIONS. 1. You managed to beat 'Street Fighter 2010' and 'Ghosts n' Goblins' but consider those two games harder than 'Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse' when you couldn't beat it. That is a contradiction. I'm assuming you beat Castlevania III after the video and we just aren't aware of it. (yeah it's not a question). 2. Where's 'Dragon's Lair' on NES? You had a very hard time just getting past the first screen of the game. You didn't get very far in this game and gave up in aggressive anger. How did 'Dragon's Lair' not make this list? I think 'Dragon's Lair' is harder than 'Silver Surfer' because Dirk is so slow and has a weak weapon, Silver Surfer can move much faster and uses a more powerful and faster weapon at least.
Castlevania is not that hard TBH. It's hard, yes. But it's far from being among the hardest. Why? Because I beat it. And I suck. Once you figure out that Holy Water = easy mode, you've got the game nailed.
Believe me, for Castlevania to be in 7th place... that's near being a fucking joke, cuz that game deserves a 5 or 4. People did not create that game, demons did! Its really hard! (I honestly don't know how you guys find it easy, its a nerve-racking game.)
richard more It's easy. Holy Water. Get to know the Holy Water, especially for the bosses. Keep a triple shot Holy Water and take it one section at a time.
@@kilvasify play japanese version, it is easer. And there are not oroblems with stairs. If you stand on stair and you are hit, than you will not be thrown to down. Just believe me, it is easer.
Am I the only one here who has actually beat Jekyll and hyde? The bombs arent too hard to dodge once you get the hang of it, and you have unlimited continues.
+djancak well here's the thing with FF1, you gotta be willing to 1) Grind and 2) talk to people in towns to know where to go and what to do. Once you defeat the Earth Fiend, the Lich, the game gets easy. Or you can play the GBA port which gave it some more modern FF updates.
+Turnabout In the NES version the level cap was 50, so there couldn't be a level 99 master. If you're talking about the gba version, grinding isn't really a requirement since the devs toned down the difficulty.
Yeah, I don't know what this guy is talking about... Castlevania, Ghosts & Goblins, Ninja Gaiden, TMNT, I beat all of them, but I never figured out Gauntlet.
Got a few letters to that stupid long code...got to like level 70 or 80 something...what the hell are you even supposed to be doing? Start questioning youre whole life

Edward Finley lmfao
It works haha 😄

Isn't there a glitch in the orig version of the game that makes it technically impossible to finish with two players or something?
I forgot how bad two player was in Battletoads. This comment made me laugh so hard I cried.

Fun Fact that mechanic in Ninja Gaiden that sends you back to 6-1 if you die on the boss in 6-3 is actually a glitch that they left in on purpose.
Lol that Silver Surfer death pose was so great.
Ninja Gaiden was hard to beat USING SAVE STATES!
So true especially on a 3ds
Is it as hard as ghosts n goblins?
Yeah about the same but does not make you repeat the story twice.
in both games you have infinite continues, but Ninja Gaiden when you continue you start at the beginning of the Act instead of the last stage you died on.... however there is a stage (5-3) where you can get an extra life then go back down the ladder you came from and come back up and get the life again... you can do this over and over as many times as you want for mutiple lives, it makes the game a bit easier for the last act

That Fester game was legendary when I was a little kid.
Milon's secret castle should be up there too lol
The Adventures of Bayou Billy was the hardest game ever played on a NES, I always wondered why james has never mentioned it
What, no Blaster Master?! Never beat that until I got a Game Genie.
Double Dragon 3 was crazy too
i beat all of these games, but silver surfer gave me the most problems. that damn game made me punch the tv so many times and throwing the nes system down the street.
was I the only person that was laughing my ass off when this guy talka
lol
haha i found his 8-bit misery humorous as well, we've all been there hahaha
i laugh everytime he says son of a fuck or what the fuck man and when he complained about the knight on castlevania.
AVGN is my new hero. I hate 99% of all video game walkthroughs/reviews but this shit is pure GOLD.
Because we've said the same exact thing playing these games!
"You can even wake him up by throwing a knife in its direction"
Well,I'd be pissed too if somebody threw a fucking knife right in my face
Always imagined my last day on earth would be to the tune of the Ninja Gaiden death song. What a nightmare of a game.
"Are you MAD!?!?" That's the best line.
Surprised you didn't include Batman. That game was stupid hard, especially at the end when you fight the Joker.
dude, i'm playing it again...i thought it was gonna be easier... it's harder as fuck... >_
Raschid Alonso I've played it not long ago. Felt like a god just for reaching the end and died lot's of time for the Joker.
I just picked that game up again, and yeah, it's tougher than I remember. One of the best Batman games, though.
Great list. I would add Punch-Out since beating Mike Tyson is impossible.
1.21 gigawatts it's not impossible you just need practice and skills
I’ve beaten about half the games on the list. Sorry to say, Tyson’s Punchout is a cake walk compared to these.
The battletoads segment was hilarious!
I recently beat Ninja Gaiden!
No savestates, no emulators, no game genie.
I beat it on an actual NES hooked up to a CRT.
It feel good to finally watch those credits roll.
nobody cares
These games make dark souls look easy
I felt so good when i beat ninja gaiden 1 and 2 but 3 its impossible f that game
2 not that hard compare to ninja gaiden 1 but ninja gaiden 3 i could even beat the 3rd level and no unlimited continue whyyyyy
What NG3 is the easiest of them
hardest thing is the fight with Clancy.
Lol 3 was easy with game genuine maybe
Maybe you beat ninja gaiden 3 razor edge
Ninja Gaiden 3, the return of Foster (his boss battle is laughable, he can't do anything most of the time), a BS scene where Ryu tells Irene he must go alone to the dimensional fortress because of "some super human power" or something, a final battle with a guy that has 3 forms (super armor guy, guy sticked to the wall and a giant mech with a face made of glass that casually shows his weak point: a heart).
I haven't played the NG3 for newer consoles, and will probably never do unless I find it for... 5 USD.
when he was talking about silver surfer, it reminded me of the GG Allin song, 'Die when you die'
#1 Doesn't even need words. XD
Surprised Dick Tracy didn't come up... XD
This takes me back.
Still can't believe I finished battletoads
LIES.
ya man, never ever got passed the fucking jet ski part, ,fuck that game
jamerian ive never passed the 6th level.
Me too! On 2 player as well. My daycare had a NES and the only playable game they had was Battletoads. I probably logged over a thousand hours on it.
Weeb monster 😄
Castlevania is not that hard TBH. It's hard, yes. But it's far from being among the hardest. Why?
Because I beat it. And I suck.
Once you figure out that Holy Water = easy mode, you've got the game nailed.
Hell yes!
Castlevania 3 though...I gave up on that
Believe me, for Castlevania to be in 7th place... that's near being a fucking joke, cuz that game deserves a 5 or 4.
"Am I the only one here who has actually beat Jekyll and hyde?"
i credit you!
Cool. What Game Genie code did you use?
The silver surfer pose LOL
This Dude funny as hell! I was Lmao! Through the whole video...
lol same here. I remembered how many weird games I actually played back in the day haha.
It was funny as shit. I actually got frustrated watching (going back to my childhood, swearing and crying).
Kinda surprised Ikari Warriors didn't make the list.
A B B A
That game still haunts me to this day.
Abba when u get to the end boss they only let you abba about 2x lol
without ABBA, that game would be impossible
I beat Battletoads when I was 7...
MarkDeMort - based on your apparently age, when you were 7, battletoad wasn't even an idea.
Enrique Rafael Gómez Got him.
I beat Ivan Drago when I was 5
Those Ninja Gaden eagles oh man
I wonder if AVGN played FF1 for the NES.
i play it, its ok
+Katie He play it I think
I remember I talk about FF before, but since It not bad game so no ep for it
+djancak well here's the thing with FF1, you gotta be willing to 1) Grind and 2) talk to people in towns to know where to go and what to do.
+Itachi Uchiha Sup itachi san
0:26-0:50 Close your eyes and just listen to the audio only.
So the worst NES game is also the hardest?
AWESOME!!!
specially da Castlevania one....memories...
what no gauntlet? lol that game was stupid hard
Start questioning youre whole life
This is old, but the games have to be reviewed by AVGN to make the list
Give Bionic Commando a run.
SchmidttyGames - grin entertainment made a version for the xbox360. the most underrated game in history. better than the original.
"We're like your NES games cause we can't be beat!"
Anyone? Anyone... no?
ERB lol, that's one of my fav eps
calvcoolidge YAAAAAAAAS!
TMNT totally won tho.
+Imogen Lamplugh TMNT were shit, artists kicked ass.
Hashtagyolo Swaggins Yeah, I know. Still.
Castlevania III I LOVE IT!! Yes it did drive me insane! Beat it with Sypha and Trevor.
