- Castlevania was a game that spawned an entire franchise of vampire-hunting escapades and was also one of the most classic NES game of all time. Up there with Super Mario Bros, Ninja Gaiden, Legend of Zelda and Megaman. Castlevania brings that classic NES charm and a fear of the night as you battle all kinds of monsters.
Castlevania was released by Konami in 1987 in America and received critically acclaiming reception. It was ranked 19 among IGNs favorite NES games. You play as Simon Belmont who armed with his whip the Vampire Killer must venture the dark corridors and staircases to kill the legendary vampire himself Dracula. Following Castlevania were of games for all different consoles from NES to the Xbox 360. Castlevania remains to be on the most classic franchises of out time.

An easy way to beat the Knights and Medusa heads in the hall before the Grim Reaper is having the Holy Water subweapon. The technique is to keep throwing Holy Water, it paralyses the knights and also stops the medusa heads from getting near you.
The cross also works very well
Holy water is ridiculously overpowered, it destroys any enemy with ease, even bosses!
It even paralyzes Dracula Phase II
The hard part is that you only get Holy Water in the begining of that stage. If you lose a life in the middle of it, you'll respawn in an area where is impossible to get that item back. It's infuriating lol
I recently found that you don't even need to KEEP throwing the water, too. For me, the trick is to lunge at the knight and throw the water in the air so that the knight can't retreat fast enough to avoid the water.
"Would you eat an old pork chop you found in a wall?!"
Every Belmont: *Yes.*
It's just a family thing! 😆
Cast iron stomachs must be a Belmont family trait 💪
Over 12 years later and Steven Jeilberg is still funny
surprised he didn't say "Steelturd" 😂
Aliens don't find that funny
Surprised he didn't mention Fred Fuchs
thats what i thought he was gonna say too@@CameronBrtnik
IF THERE'S A FUCKIN PORK CHOP IN THIS WALL, I WOULD SO EAT IT!
- my favorite part
I would fuck it myself but to each their own i guess.
I didn't know you like this stuff too
@@XAbbeldydooX well, then The Belmonts have a way of getting food quickly. Pretty Convenient
@@XAbbeldydooX
Pork the Chop? Haha
🍖
Christopher Bee is right up there with Fred Fucks...but no spotlight on James Banana? Who the hell is that a reference to, anyway?
***** I guess but that's not a horror movie reference
James Banana is a reference to James Bernard, the film composer of Dracula (1958)
TheGaminWeasel Hmm...James Banaado, James Banaana...makes sense from a Japanese pronounciation standpoint, what a pun.
James Bernard did the music for the Dracula film of the 1950s. James Banana, on the game, refers to Kinuyo Yamashita who did the music on the game.
RedHairdo
"Baanado?" Don't give SyFy any ideas, now... ;)
Anybody else come back to this series of videos every Halloween?
Here I am baby 🙌🙌🙌
laughted so hard when the dialog WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT... appeared.
This videos never get old :)
"What a horrible night to have a curse" is a running gag in Castlevania 2.
Rest In Peace
Christopher Bee
(1922-2015)
I truly believe Sakurai and his team watched these AVGN episodes, and we're inspired to put Simon and Richter Belmont in Smah Bros.
These classic avgn videos in a real basement are the best
Who else is here to watch this beautiful series again for 2019 Halloween?
Love rewatching all these avgn videos and seeing all the new comments since I came last time.
I do this all the time.
6:55: "What in the unholy name of ASS is this fuckness!?
...wait, that's not a real word? Well it should be."
-AVGN
I guess it could be a word if you can say it :P
I actually like Simon's quest.
If you hit the mummies when they overlap eachother they take massive damage and if you hit a boss when they hit you, like the exact frame, they take critical damage which is I believe 6x the damage
The reason why hearts are ammo is because most weapons in castlevania take soul power to use. Like the vampire killer and how it kills those who aren’t Belmonts
god i fucking love Castlevania themes
Can’t believe it’s been ten years since this aired. I come back to these episodes every once in a while.
Ahh yes, there is no better way to spend a night off than to sit with a vodka and coke, Wii U, and a classic episode of AVGN :).
Yeah I'm great fun at parties.
I wish more people would understand that it's a legiitimate lifestyle.
Direnaar one day they will, we may even get representation in government one day :). It's just that awesome.
This Quadrilogy of Castlevania videos are among my favorite AVGN videos. When I feel down, I check it up. Chills every time I hear the music.
Every october I come back to this. love it so much!
Is it wrong I actually laughed at Steven Geilberg?
Monk 0 same😄
Me too
James himself laughed at it afterwards
I think it's his delivery, that's always been a strong suit for James.
Its like if I tool the name Keifer Sutherland and called him Keifer Motherland.
happy 30th anniversary Castlevania!!!! :)
30!! Thirty yearssszzz counted since then indeed !!!! Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ahh !! (lighting strikes all of a sudden and bats appear from nowhere)
Simon the Monster Hunter lmao
Castlevania actually has an Anime and Manga that has a similar story to castlevania, the anime I speak of is....................JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOJO!!!!!
(Jojo's Bizarre adventure)
is Christopher Bee funny? well i laughed when a bee with Christopher Lee's head on came in so i guess YES
9:33-My Favourite Part🤣👏👏👏👍
This was peak AVGN
Peak childhood here 🖤
_the soundtrack, the visuals, the whole lore and the Belmont family, everything in this game and this franchise is so fascinating._
the lore is horrible
If there was a pork chop in this wall I would so eat it right now!
Lol best line ever
Back again for my annual Halloween watch XD
7:18 bro, those little montages with the gameplay and the 16 bit music are just timeless, that’s the embodiment of AVGN nostalgia
To be honest these 4 Castlevania review videos are my favorite of his. I really wish he would go back to this style of reviews instead of all the special effects and acting in between the review. These are always a joy to watch
The Castlevania AVGN series is my favourite work James has done, along with Board James.
Still some of the best work in the entire Nerd series. The deep respect and love for the material really shines through and inevitably wants to me make me play through these games yet again every time.
8:19
Sounds like Wormy from SpongeBob SquarePants
I remember watching this every Saturday morning during highschool in 2010-11.
I'm glad you are enjoying the success of AVGN James. Thank you.
I love the last part it goes "music" "no I already reveiwed that one" "music" "no" music" "stop" "music" stop" "music" "stop!" "more music."
My Halloween tradition continues! Another year and here I am! Thanks james!
1:35 - James' reaction to the opening scene was my exact reaction when I played the game when I was a kid.
Was it really? What's scary about it?
Jonathan Unger Well, you have to consider that fact that, at the time, there weren't a lot of horror video games available that were trying to be scary. The atmosphere of Super Castlevania IV was serious and dark throughout, unlike Ghosts N' Goblins with its knight running around in boxer shorts when he'd take a hit. For kids like James and I, and others of our generation, this was a horror game unlike anything else at the time. Maybe it's not scary after four console generations have passed since, with all the Silent Hills, Fatal Frames, and PT demos that have followed, but for those who remember when SC IV was new and exciting, the tombstone opening scene will always remain a cherished (and frightening) memory for us.
Gorilla Monsoon
You get the fuck around the Tube don't you? Been seeing your comments all over 'ole?
Lol for me it was "Simon the Monster Hunter" (AAAAHH!!! Real Monsters reference)
1:30 As silly looking as it is, that skeleton actually kind of freaks me out... o_o
Bought the castlevania collection on switch for $3 , never played any of the games but have been watching the nerd for years
Wish me luck boys !
If find it funny how when you were a kid, Dracula and Skeletons were creepy... Now adays we have SlenderMan, Jeff the Killer, and Smile dog.
Dylan Rogers To be fair, Slender Man, in the way he's presented in the Slenderverse ARGs (Marble Hornets, TribeTwelve, DarkHarvest, EverymanHYBRID etc.), is fairly creepy and well executed as a mysterious horror figure. And I personally find those ARGs to be better than the horror films I've seen nowadays. If you're going off the Slender game or badly written Creepypastas, then Slender Man is not going to come off as all that creepy.
Dylan Rogers I really enjoyed Outlast, Very scary & very fun
Dylan Rogers Sorry to say this but you don't know what you are talking about, sure there are a lot great influential and awesome horror movies from the 70's like Dawn of The Dead, The Exocist, Carrie, Halloween, Black Christmas, Phantasm, and Jaws. But there were still amazing horror movies in the 80's and 90's. For the 80's there are movies like The Shining, Evil Dead 1 & 2, Re-Animator, American Werewolf in London, The Thing, Return Of The Living Dead. In the 90's there is From Dusk Till Dawn, Jacob's Ladder, Blair Witch Project. Today, yes you are half right there are some god awful movies that are nothing more than jump scares, bad and recycled plots, movies that were good till there a dozen sequels that just re-use what we have already seen (Saw, Paranormal Activity) and that's what most horror movies are like today, but again there are some modern gems that you have been missing. Watch American Psycho, V.H.S 1 and 2, The Descent, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Dead Snow, And The Host. What I'm really trying to say is that you should actually try to find some good horror movies without just summing up that the films in the 70's were the only good horror movies, and I know it is Your opinion, and i'm rambling on but hey, I just gave you (and who ever else is reading this) a list on what I think are some good movies, So Dylan it's up to you, either Ignore this or get some popcorn go on Netflix or Amazon and study up.
[Nightlock] I couldn't agree with you more.
Dylan Rogers I accept your opinion, and the only reason I said you don't know what you are talking about is that you said "nowadays", then you referred back to the 70's. So I didn't know if you thought movies from the 80's could really be considered 'modern'. P.S. what movie/movies were you referring to from the 70's that were the last "good" horror movies? P.P.S- Do you really think Evil Dead, The Thing plus a few other ones are action horror/phsycological horror? If you do, I think that's just a wee on the silly side. Again it's just my opinion, and i'm not trying to change your opinion. It's just im interested in what someone else who has a different opinion than me has to say on the subject.
You wanna know what scares me? Stock screams. I don't know why, but they're so grating to me.
Halloween season = Time to get cozy in the chair with a hot cup of cocoa and watch some Castlevania reviews!

It's not THAT bad...
"It's like in Castlevania..."
I'd just like to point out that there's a typo in the description:
"Following Castlevania were of games for all different consoles from NES to the Xbox 260."
Unless there is an Xbox260 I'm not aware of that is.
still a better name than xbox one ha ha(though i'll never own a xbox to save my life anything but that >_>)
Im gonna frame that still image of James at 1:45.
Every October, I come here, armed with a vampire hunter, a screen, and a pair of headphones. These three videos are like tradition for me.
We should do money with this face 9:51 printed on.
I always find myself coming back to this video series and binge watching it, Always a good time.
4:40 If all Pork Chops were perfect, we wouldn’t have Hotdogs
Steven universe references???
Steven Universe? In my AVGN review?
It's more likely than it seems.
Ah, the time for my yearly October tradition has returned. Anyone else watch all these ever October? Best AVGN to me
It's Halloween time! Here for my annual watching of this.
I downloaded Castlevania on the 3ds and GOD DAMN was it harder than a zombie witch's tit.
😂😂😂
+Chris Westergaard I don't wanna know how you know how hard a zombie witch's tit is, do I? -_-
Chozo Hunter You know, its not as gross as you think
Chris Westergaard LUKE!! USE THE SAVE POINTS!
I’m rewatching this series for the 3rd time still 1 of my favorite nerd episodes in the series
Every year 1 or 2 times I came back and rewatch this Castlevania Marathon. Still my favorite episodes, even thou I love all other AVGN episodes too. You should do it a second time, maybe play more Super Castlevania 4 or the original Rondo of Blood for PC Engine or even add some spinoffs like the Game Boy games or Kid Dracula for example.
The Stephen Gielberg joke always makes me laugh 😂
A big inspiration for me finishing this game with my best bud!
Now to eventually take this adventure with my son.
how come 12 years old video pops up on my recommendation
Lost count of the number of times I've binge watched all the AVGN episodes. Usually I just do the seasons for convenience. Howeverr, every now and then you've gotta come back to the original uncut episodes with all the original uncut material.
Rewatching these and there are still lines in this episode that kill me so hard. That entire Steven Geilberg section is my all time favorite avgn moment, makes me laugh to tears every time! Best series of episodes ever!
Mine too! Ahhh man, he is so adamant at how unfunny it is, but hearing him say 'Steven Gielberg' is just gut busting!
James is not kidding about the knockback thing. I died so many times because there was a pit behind me and I got hit the face by a bat or Medusa.
The Castlevania thumbnail's better not be changed.
It's changed...
They changed it
Its that time of the year again. Happy Halloween, time to watch all 4 episodes.
As much as i love the old castlevania games to this day Symphony of the Night is my favorite.
I don’t always watch a lot of AVGN nowadays but when I start I always go back to the collection of Castlevania games as they are classics
yeah I really miss the old castlevania 2D ..all ere getting is the 3D ones ...they should bring it back were's IGA?
I can't remember how many times I wanted to throw the controller though the tv set playing this game! ! ! This game, double dragon, and a few other ones.
Here we are again! Another Halloween Season - time for some AVGN Castlevania-thon!
6:59 1. Your spoiling what we’re about to say, 2. your kinda breaking the fourth wall
I don't know why, but I love this video a lot.
I bought a six pack of rolling rock, it’s a decent beer.
No other game gives me that nostalgia like Castlevania 2 music
Still the best of the NES series
I'm here in 2023 still loving this and all his videos. Thanks James!
"From the NES to the Xbox 260." Ummmmmmm Nerd you gotta fix that
I still can't get over how he calls True Dracula "Cookie Monster" because the NES had inspired great Designs, but they were so Goofy on paper that if you only played the NES, you'd think Castlevania is a Comedy.
BORIS KARLOFFICE
FUN FACT! AVGN MADE THIS VIDEO 2 YEARS AFTER THE MOST RECENT MAINLINE CASTLEVANIA GAME RELEASED (order of ecclysia) AND SINCE
THERE HAS NOT BEEN A SINGLE NEW MAINLINE, CANON, CASTLEVANIA GAME!
Best game franchise ever
Except for the N64 games
Also the two newest releases castlevania lords of shadow 1 & 2 were amazing and the add on, i think mirror of fate is the title, was so tragic
What i love most about castlevania is the storyline
Although it mainly only repeats itself, every game is unique in its own way and i always love the story
One of the best reviews by AVGN
Fun fact: It also took me 20 years to beat Castlevania.
The Christopher Bee animation always gets me no matter how many times I have watched it already 😂
I work in a theme park, and I run the spook house ride, "Dracula's Castle." Nearly got fired for swapping out the house soundtrack with the ost from Castlevania. Worth it.
Now THAT is fan dedication!
Sorry to hear that you almost got the pink slip. Would have been cool if you could put in he soundtrack from Super Castlevania,
So worth it

I dare to disagree, these videos do age.
They age like wine, only getting better with the passing years.

Listening to AVGN Castlevania and listening to 8 bit soundtracks. Heaven.
@Keith Seymour That's pretty cool! I do something similar around Halloween myself except with me, I would always play Monster Party on the NES every Halloween.
I do the exact same thing! Here we are approaching Halloween 2021 and I'm watching the whole Castlevania series review once again.
