Well, a chance is given, as the Nerd seeks out the help of a sensei master. Q-tips will drop, thumbs will slice - it's AVGN: Ninja Gaiden!

Yeah I'm 40 years old , it's 12:00am, have to wake up early for work but I'm watching my new favorite RUclipsr playing 30 year old games. I love my life.

I highly doubt you love your life when your in your frigging 40s. The only way to really love life is to have significant other and have sex with him and/or her on a daily basis.

The game is only over, when you make it over.
That made me emotional
You know, it’s actually kinda true :)
Actually, you're right. The game has to beat you so that you can learn your mistakes and become better. The game controlling you is the game angering you, allowing yourself to accept the loss.

Jakub Gdaniec that's deep
It is actually possible to have true random in computers, and even when they don't use true random, the outcome is actually much better than the numbers chosen by humans. “If you set a course for the moon and merely follow the stars, then you will miss that which you have set forth”
🤣😂🤣😂 i laugh so hard every time i watch this and see James’ reaction after he says that. And then the ninja kinda shrugs b/c he knew it made absolutely no fkn sense lmao. Great AVGN moment.
I think it actually makes a bit of sense. If you look at the words, it's basically saying "If you set a destination by what's around it, you miss the point of the original destination."
I think it's meant to harken back to something Bruce Lee said. "It is like a finger pointing a way to the moon. Don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss out on all that heavenly glory."
@George Kafiridis I don't think it's meant to reference that. Especially as James is a huge movie buff.
@George Kafiridis, so am I. Amazing how that works, no? I think the ninja's line was referencing the old Bruce Lee line, not the older proverb. You disagree. Neither of us has any evidence to support our opinions. Perhaps if James does an AMA someone can ask him.
@George Kafiridis, if it was as "obvious" as you say it is, than I wouldn't be disagreeing with you. Now, quit trying to save face on an old internet argument, accept that until there's official word from the content creator, my answer is just as valid as yours.
Much Respect to Kevin Finn. What a Great Character Performance.
I remember years ago I made it my life goal to beat all three of these games. I have to admit Ninja Gaiden 3 was the hardest. You loose way too much life from being hit by the bad guys in that one. Then you have to beat it with only 5 continues. Amazing games! Then I made it my life goal to beat Battletoads. With that goal I failed in life. I could only get to level 8 In Battlefrogs. That game is insane.
Should be Level 9 - Terra Tubes. And f*ck that game!
I managed to complete Battletoads. It took me just under two months. That game is BRUTAL.
you my friend are the game god
Beating Battletoads' Turbo Tunnel Level is as massive an accomplishment as completing the game itself.
InuYugiHakusho Yeah, it's fairly easy now, but still.. those later levels are not that forgiving. It only gets harder from there. 'Volkmire's Inferno' (Level 7) is like the 2nd turbo tunnel. The Ice Cavern is harder in my opinion in the original version of the game and is slightly easier in the Japanese. If you've played the Japanese version of Battletoads, you will notice just how many improvements there are, like difficulty-wise. The 'Clinger Winger' level (11) is the one that you can't beat if you're emulating the game, which means that even if I want to beat it, I gotta be playing on a real NES and on an old CRT TV. Input lag has to be decreased to it's minimal.
So high, I never noticed the ninja sitting next to him at 13:07. When he popped up it scared the shit out of me
Nick Barrett Well, ninjas are masters of stealth after all...
When I was a kid I made it to the final boss once and proceeded to get steam rolled. I don’t think I’ve touched it since. Such an unfair amount of difficulty.

This is pure art.
Street Fighter and Ninja Gaiden both have the characters named Ryu and Ken, but they have different meanings in Japanese.
In Street Fighter, Ryu means Prosperity or Abundant (隆) and Ken means Fist (拳).
In Ninja Gaiden, Ryu means Dragon (龍) and Ken means Sword (剣).
but his name is just ケン?
I feel your frustration James, it took me nearly twenty years and I was able to beat Ninja Gaiden myself. The game was relentless back then and it is relentless now.
Me and my brothers loved this game so much we made it a passion to make Ryu the perfect hero because we wanted him to succeed through his revenge. We do speed runs, the key is maintaining the Cyclone spin skill which can 1 shot or 2 shot all bosses including the hardest one.
Scrolled through the comments to see if anyone brought this up, or if I wasn't remembering the game correctly. This is definitely how I beat the game when I was a kid. I just remember jumping into the bosses with a spinning blade attack and taking them out pretty easily.

this game is so stupidly easy once you figure it out. it only took me like 20 years, but i finally mastered it. lol
Lol, me too. The key is you have to keep moving. If you move back the enemies will spawn indefinitely. You have to move and strike.
yup. that's the whole trick. never stop moving, and be as quick with your sword as you are on your feet. there are very few spots were i will ever stop and stand still for 1 second.
There are some great techniques for beating tough spots, bosses, etc. if you look up speed runs for the game.
It's all about memorization. I'm telling you, guys ;).
I don't need anything by my sword.

2:07 No, it's not the same Ryu from Street Fighter... But it's the same Ryu from Dead or Alive!
however, Ryu (SF) met Akira from Virtua Fighter in Namco x Capcom and its sequels, while Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden) met Akira in DoA5. This means that while they're not the same person and all, they do have a friend in common.
haha cool
how the hell did Akira meet Ryu from the VF series when thats a sega property? Sega isn''t going to release a Virtura Fighter 6 or 7 so they just let their fan favorites go on the latest DOA last round.

This game was before the 'everyone a winner' nonsense came about. Being relentlessly hard, it sharpened your skills which made the reward of beating it that much better. Games today pale in comparison to this one which is merciless and will beat you down.
James Robert It was only hard because of money.
I can honestly say these are the hardest games on the NES in my opinion. Worse than Ghosts n' Goblins, worse than Castlevania or Megaman or anything else.
Having just beaten Ninja Gaiden, I can safely say that I feel at least Castlevania III and SMB2 JPN (Lost Levels) are harder. As well as Ghosts 'n' Goblins, which I've yet to beat.
Maybe Ninja Gaiden 2 or 3 will surpass them though.
Agreed. For me, the fun of playing a video game is the idea that you might not beat it -- that it's a challenge (hopefully a thoughtfully designed one). Newer games don't appeal to me much, as the trend has been them to make them interactive experiences rather than tight, efficiently designed challenges.
That's actually an interesting way to look at games like this. Huh.
Watching in 2024. This is still his greatest episode yet. Pure genius.
