I'm 42. I got the NES in 1986, possibly 1987. My neighbor up the street was a couple years older than me and had already had a very nice game collection. Blades of Steel was one of those games, and he and I would play for hours.
💯
Almost the same for me, it was the older kid who would come play with me though. Haha
By far one of the best sports games on the NES. Pure joy as a kid.
*is your friend dead now?*
You stopped talking to him so long ago, you probably don't even know the answer to that question.
At the very least 87 if blades of steel was out
I was never a fan of hockey, but I loved this game. One of the very best sports titles on the NES.
A lot of people preferred Ice Hockey (1988) on the NES, wherein you could create your own team by choosing your own combination of Fat Guys, Skinny Guys, and Normal Guys who each had the logical speed / toughness tradeoffs.
But I loved Blades. Of. Steel. Iconic game.
Always chose 2 Fat guys, one skinny and one normal.
that was the ultimate lineup
I remember that one, but Blades played better.
I still play this till this day on my original NES
This game was so much fun. It had the gameplay, graphics, fighting, and great voice over.
Played this as a kid, and still have the cartridge all these years later.
Same
I don't even like Hockey but I loved this game as a kid, even though 80% of the time it was me and my buddies checking each other until the fight sequence kicked in!
I remember doing tournaments at our buds house playing this game all the time
EA NHL 94 is what my friends and I played, bong hit rewarded for each goal scored countless hours of laughter and boy did we get good.
I remember my best friend and his cousin kicking the piss out of each other every time a fight would break out in the game. Blades of steel was knocked clean out the NES a couple times when these fools got physical outside the video game. It was hilarious.
I Frigging LOVED this game!
My friends and i practically wore out the cartridge playing it so much.
Thanks for the vid man
Awesome game, brings back memories.
I remember playing this after Halloween back in day over friends.
I got an nes in 86. I was only 15 years old then. I went to the store in my first games I bought was this and bases loaded. I played the heck out of them.
I loved this game so much. It was right up there with Tecmo Bowl to me.
Man, this was one of my all time favorites! Damn I miss this game!!!
No hockey game has yet surpassed blades of steel or ice hockey yet
NHL ‘93
@@Sonderwaive *94
You mean NHL 94 for the Sega Genesis!🎮🕹️🎮
What year was the one without the fighting. For me that's the best one cuz it wasn't impossible playing as the goalie. Later games just made it much harder. My opinion of course.
@@audiovalhalla it was the very first one they made and It was the 90-91 season of the NHL and then the rest of the other hockey games EA had the fighting in them🏒🥅
Spent hours playing this definitely one of my favourites
Best game ever! The tournament was tough to do, but if you got to score and lead- If you can maintain control of the puck by moving the player in a tight circle you can win easily.
My older cousins loved this game!
I used to live that game, I played it the arcade all the time.
Blades of Steel. RBI Baseball. Tecmo (Super) Bowl.
Three of the greatest sports video games ever. As fun now as they were then.
Practically my entire dorm floor would meet up every night to play RBI Baseball in my neighbors room.
Amazing times
miss those days...
I used to play this with all my friends back then and I remember that I got my goalie to score on them quite a few times 😅
Don't forget the Space ship mini game in the 2nd intermission!
Using the pass button to “shoot” on goal when close to the goalie worked great. Allowed you to to shoot the puck without needed that arrow that aims your shot
As a kid, I played this game a lot. My favorite was picking fights!
put many hours into this game as a kid with my brother and friends. good times
One key fact was missing from this. And that's when you lose the fight you're the one in the penalty box The winner of the fight not only gets controlled the puck but is now on a power play. Crucial fact that was left out or omitted. But was shown in the gameplay footage without that context though the person watching the video would have no idea why that was the case just saying
dirty hockey !! Try and start fights, win the power play. It's a good strategy for this game
I remember opening this up on Christmas morning along with lifeforce and I think jackal it was a good day
I loved this game! NES classic!
We played the heck out of this game after it first was released 😀
Blades of Steel and Metroid are my all time favorites on the NES.
Blades of Steel, Madden 92, and Mike Tyson's Punchout were the best sport games on NES.
Tecmo Bowl
I was pretty good at this one, though I’m an old gamer (was 35 when it came out), so it makes sense. Being a hockey fanatic, I bought this game the day it came out in the states. Played it like crazy. Of course I won the championship vs the computer I played so often (I was bound to win it).
Ice Hockey on NES was fun, but not as realistic as Blades Of Steel. One thing I liked better in Ice Hockey, was the goal graphics. The net actually bulged on goals, quite cool.
In June or July of 1991, I saw an ad in GamePro of NHL Hockey by EA. I was obsessed with the ad, and sold my NES and all the games to get a Sega Genesis. Had to wait a month until it came out, but I had the original Madden to keep me busy.
Once NHL by EA came out, it was game over. Could never go back to the NES and any NES hockey games. But Blades Of Steel really was a blast though pre NHL.
Yup, NHL on Genesis was amazing.
Me and my buds must have put 100's upon 100's of hours playing it over the years.
Still got my copy for the NES and digitally on Wii
My brother and I played this game over and over. We opened it up on Christmas Eve and started playing it. When we wouldn't get ready for church my mom said even the players are telling you "Christmas mass, Christmas mass" We countered and said it was saying "Skip the mass, Skip the mass" My dad said if we didn't shut it off he'd tan our ass just like the game was saying.
Another point to immersion, the scripting and animations. It was always satisfying to watch the players move out onto the ice in the intro, and celebrate while the other team leaves. The scripting for the ref is even good, skating out to grab the puck after a goal, or remove a downed player from the ice after a fight.
+1 I love the little things like the skaters each moving at their own pace when forming up as opposed to being perfectly synced like a hive mind
Me and my college roommates would get into fights over this game. Geat Times, Great Game.
Had a blast playing this game with my college buddies back in 1989. I remember there was a cheat where if you took a shot on goal at a certain angle it would always go in
I played that game for hundreds of hours so much fun!
I always loved the Edmonton oilers in their booger green jerseys.
I always picked that team.
Made it easy to see which players were yours..
@@mowowie I guess that was the best they could do with the NES color palette in the day.
Was one of my first and definitely one of my favorite nes games
That's my favorite hockey game back in the day.
I played the absolute crap out of this game! I was always New York. Music was epic, gameplay addicting, and hoisting that trophy and getting your picture in the paper was thrilling!
Salute ,if you were part of this era .80s baby
Yes blades of steel and double dribble!!
Yup 2 amazing games that we played for 100's of hours..
An odd quirk that I remember about this game was that on the Junior difficulty setting, you could skate in a circle around a defender. They would follow you and you could get past them. On the College and Pro settings (definitely Pro but I think College too), you had to do a half circle and then change directions or they would cut you off. I remember once after I had gotten pretty good playing on Pro, I switched back to Junior just to see how easy it was. But at that time I had the half circle reversal move in my muscle memory. The Junior defenders would follow you though and hit you as soon as you turned around. It was an issue for me in the game as I would instinctually do the pro move every so often becuase that was what I had been playing for weeks or possibly months. I remeber thinking it was funny that amatuer move got you wrecked on the pro setting, and the pro move got you wrecked on the junior serting.
Loved this game but I also loved Ice Hockey which I had first and I never even watched hockey then or now but such a fun sport to play in video game form.
We all still play this
Yeah good job at not playing any of the sound from the game.
Always loved this game
Thank you for the video
Fights were great
This game rules!
I loved to play the arcade version when I was young.
classic. use to play it just to get into the fights.
Great quality channel! Nice and clean with a good mic. As I remember it it was yades of yeele. Absolutely awesome game.
Thanks
I've been trying to think of the best way to type what the game says when it says the title for over 30 years.
One of the greats
Best hockey game
10/10 should make a bar arcade out of it that can be online multiplayer to other bars
Those graphics are pretty good for the NES. Nice!
Great game. We mostly like trying to fight.
Still one of the best Konomi games int their lineup to this day frfr! #dbldrbble! #tcmobwl! #cstlvna! #cntra! 💯 🙋♂️
I'm glad someone said that game developers don't have to simulate every detail of a sport in order for the game to enjoyable. I get tired of having to know everything about a sport in order to understand the video game(s) of them.
This game was great and it’s the only hockey game I’ve played.
i loved this game
One of (NES) best.
Hockey doesn't have a halftime. You're probably thinking about the second intermission.
Loved this game!!!
Only one of the best fn games ever…! So good! My childhood. Good times
loved how if you got a penalty if you lost a fight. And not such thing as offsides.
The favorite trick/loophole, was the classic shot from the farthest point you could - as it was hard for the opposite goalie to track the puck, as when you made that shot, the screen would migrate with the puck. So as the opposing goalie, there was a good chance you would make it past that person.
Its crazy the Blue line comes in like a lightning bolt and the Red line....NOT so much.
Played it a lot, memorable game.. 2 critical points though: 1. Would have been better to let the puck get passed the goal if you miss, rather than hitting the post that often, hitting the post is something that happens a lot. 2. The CPU goalie is very bad, you can beat him by using the pass button when he stands in one corner.
I loved playing this game
Yeah the graphics were def great on this for the time
I was never a hockey fan growing up until I became an adult and even then I only watched it for the fights😂 but when I was a kid I hated hockey and growing up I still love this game. Aren't you able to fight on this game I'm pretty sure you were and weren't there games in intermission that you could play a little side games
Ive never played it but Ice Hockey was a great one
Classic game ❤
Anyone else shoot exclusively from the corner of the blue line? Highest odds of scoring shot in the game.
Press the pass
Love it. Besides the flashing/flickering.
Fight!!! Had to play with the Whalers.
You talk about the audio being so exhilarating but you didn't include the sound bites.
We used to treat this game like Street Fighter and just play for the fights
Good quick overview, but why not play the audio you discuss or show the mini-game?
I didn't know enough about copyright when I made this video. I will be including audio in some future videos
This is a very good game !!
Pure generation x nostalgia
I love the celebration. They could have charged 500 dollars and we make my parents pay for it
This was a great game so was Bill Lambeers Combat Basketball
I still emulate it today.
💢
Everyone's offsides😂
Id play this with my gf ❤
Not sure why you didn't use b-roll footage to highight your voiceover? Would have been nostalgic to see Gladius side game footage
Shut up bish
HIT THE PASS
Wasn’t the intermission mini-game Contra?
No.
There was a galaga styled game, an ad for Jackal and an ad with a bear or something shooting a puck
If only it had one timers
🏆 Pound For Pound 🏆
Konami wasn't playing around.
Blades of steel and double dribble
Excite Bike and RC Pro Am.
Hockey doesn't have "halftime".
