I'm 42. I got the NES in 1986, possibly 1987. My neighbor up the street was a couple years older than me and had already had a very nice game collection. Blades of Steel was one of those games, and he and I would play for hours.
I don't even like Hockey but I loved this game as a kid, even though 80% of the time it was me and my buddies checking each other until the fight sequence kicked in!
I got an nes in 86. I was only 15 years old then. I went to the store in my first games I bought was this and bases loaded. I played the heck out of them.
Using the pass button to “shoot” on goal when close to the goalie worked great. Allowed you to to shoot the puck without needed that arrow that aims your shot
One key fact was missing from this. And that's when you lose the fight you're the one in the penalty box The winner of the fight not only gets controlled the puck but is now on a power play. Crucial fact that was left out or omitted. But was shown in the gameplay footage without that context though the person watching the video would have no idea why that was the case just saying
Another point to immersion, the scripting and animations. It was always satisfying to watch the players move out onto the ice in the intro, and celebrate while the other team leaves. The scripting for the ref is even good, skating out to grab the puck after a goal, or remove a downed player from the ice after a fight.
The favorite trick/loophole, was the classic shot from the farthest point you could - as it was hard for the opposite goalie to track the puck, as when you made that shot, the screen would migrate with the puck. So as the opposing goalie, there was a good chance you would make it past that person.
What year was the one without the fighting. For me that's the best one cuz it wasn't impossible playing as the goalie. Later games just made it much harder. My opinion of course.
@@audiovalhalla it was the very first one they made and It was the 90-91 season of the NHL and then the rest of the other hockey games EA had the fighting in them🏒🥅
I was never a hockey fan growing up until I became an adult and even then I only watched it for the fights😂 but when I was a kid I hated hockey and growing up I still love this game. Aren't you able to fight on this game I'm pretty sure you were and weren't there games in intermission that you could play a little side games
I hated Blade of Steel. Worst hockey game on NES. The "Ice Hockey" game was WAYYYYYY better. Only shot type in Blade of Steel is the slapshot, and the puck does not lift off the surface, and that was terrible. The goalies were always standing, no sliding, no crouching, no diving to make saves. Terrible game on all levels.
I'm glad someone said that game developers don't have to simulate every detail of a sport in order for the game to enjoyable. I get tired of having to know everything about a sport in order to understand the video game(s) of them.

💯
Almost the same for me, it was the older kid who would come play with me though. Haha
By far one of the best sports games on the NES. Pure joy as a kid.
I still play this till this day on my original NES
Awesome game, brings back memories.
That's my favorite hockey game back in the day.
I remember playing this after Halloween back in day over friends.

Blades of Steel and Metroid are my all time favorites on the NES.

EA NHL 94 is what my friends and I played, bong hit rewarded for each goal scored countless hours of laughter and boy did we get good.
Always loved this game
Thank you for the video

dirty hockey !! Try and start fights, win the power play. It's a good strategy for this game
I always loved the Edmonton oilers in their booger green jerseys.
Yes blades of steel and double dribble!!
Classic game ❤
Great game. We mostly like trying to fight.
Great quality channel! Nice and clean with a good mic. As I remember it it was yades of yeele. Absolutely awesome game.
Thanks
I've been trying to think of the best way to type what the game says when it says the title for over 30 years.
I loved to play the arcade version when I was young.
This is a very good game !!
One of the greats
Don't forget the Space ship mini game in the 2nd intermission!

+1 I love the little things like the skaters each moving at their own pace when forming up as opposed to being perfectly synced like a hive mind
Was one of my first and definitely one of my favorite nes games

Those graphics are pretty good for the NES. Nice!
We used to treat this game like Street Fighter and just play for the fights
classic. use to play it just to get into the fights.
I loved playing this game
This game was great and it’s the only hockey game I’ve played.
Not sure why you didn't use b-roll footage to highight your voiceover? Would have been nostalgic to see Gladius side game footage
Shut up bish
Wasn’t the intermission mini-game Contra?
No hockey game has yet surpassed blades of steel or ice hockey yet
NHL ‘93

Press the pass
This was a great game so was Bill Lambeers Combat Basketball
Pure generation x nostalgia
Yeah good job at not playing any of the sound from the game.
Only one of the best fn games ever…! So good! My childhood. Good times

I've seen _so_ _many_ real fights break out from the goalie scoring in Blades Of Steel.
CPU Vancouver team had a squad
I still emulate it today.
💢
With the pass.
I love the celebration. They could have charged 500 dollars and we make my parents pay for it
I remember having this ...but i liked arch rivals better lol
Playing this with game genie you could shoot through the net
The only penalty is losing a fight
If you fot into a fight in front of rhe net, penalty shot. Lol
Online mode was always better on this game
All this talk about music yet no music. Fak man toss some in.

Blades of Steel > Nintendo Ice Hockey, just like Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf > NES Open > Nintendo Golf.
