We live in town two doors down from an abandoned house. We also had a 4 ft long black snake that apparently patrolled our lot, and neighbor's lot. We never saw a copperhead. The neighborhood kids liked to play in the ruines of the old house after it was knocked down. Years later a new neighbor moved into the house bestween us & the ruins, shortly before the new owners of the lot cleared it & started building on it. The new nieghbor told us he had killed six copperheads in one week & aksed if we had had trouble with snakes. My husband told him only with garter snakes & one big black snake. The man told him, "no wonder you never saw a copperhead--your black snake ate them."

My Papaw always told me that they wouldn’t kill black snakes in their barn when he was growing up because they ate rodents. He said they would get huge eating up the rats. I remember him saying they would kill poisonous snakes too. He was born in KY in 1912.

When I lived in TX I had a 3-4 ft black snake living on my back porch. I let him be and he let us alone, just did his thing. We never had rodents or venomous snakes. Sadly he didn't tackle the scorpions but taking care of the rest was fabulous! ❤ I say live and let live with him. He'll earn his keep!

Good for you for letting that little black snake be! Farmers where I live and just country people too, know that a non-venomous snake is good to have around, not only for eating venomous snakes but for reducing the rat and mouse population too. I am so glad to see that you do understand more than most where you live!!

I enjoyed seeing the black snake. The first time, when he was up on the wall ledge, it appeared that he had at least two eggs in his belly. It was fascinating watching him trying to get that jumbo egg down. I am sure that he really wanted it, too, but settled for the two smaller Banty eggs that you gave him in trade. If you have the eggs to spare, and he keeps the Copperhead snake population down, then this is a good deal for everyone. Well done on the fish you all have been catching down at the lake. Looks like good eating! Have a great Memorial Day weekend with the family!

I think Smeegle is pretty smart. And if giving Albert an egg on occasion to keep the copperheads and other venomous snakes away, I’d say he works pretty cheap. Just watch him as he gets bigger so he doesn’t eat a chicken. But maybe you can actually train him to come to the same place for an egg each day. - Sue in AZ

I actually saw a black snake outside my garage door last fall and he scurried into the garage. Freaked me out at first and I left the door open for several hours. HOWEVER, I am glad he lives around my house! I live in a neighborhood near a culvert spillway I guess you’d call it. And I have killed a venomous snake at the end of that same garage a year or so ago! So that black snake can stay. My Rottweilers jumped right over him and i walked right beside him and he only ran away! No threat to us ♥️

It's not everyday that you see a woman who isn't afraid of a blak snake. She just went in there with one thing on her mind. And she did it. Appreciate that. I would rescue black snakes. We had a creek run through the property. I had problems with copper heads and Eastern rattle snakes. I would turn these black snakes loose on our property. A racer back and a hog nose were my favorites that stuck around. The hog nose was named Nosey, because if my husband or I were outside he would come to see what we were doing. I remember one time Nosey managed to get in the house, but my cat wasn't having it, so I shushed him outside.

Kevin, I am so glad you were merciful to the black rat snake. They are too beneficial to kill. Now, if one gets big enough to start eating chickens, then I would certainly say relocate it. But thanks for not destroying it just because it’s a snake. That philosophy really angers me. Sadly there are way too many people that think that way. I sure do enjoy watching every video you put out! God bless your family. Love you folk.

Working with nature to keep the environment in balance is always a good idea Kevin. I don't like snakes of any description because where I come from there are no benign snakes......and, apart from pythons most will eat eachother and then have a darn good go at humans too! They tend to attack first and ask questions later. BUT...your idea seems logical. I hope it works for you....and little Skeeter. We'll watch with interest.

Go Rachel she was straight in there getting that snake, which was very determined to eat that big chicken egg, it was nice of you to trade him two bantam ones to eat, we’re lucky here Kevin, we only have two types of snake, the Adder venomous and the grass snake non venomous, I think they only grow to about a metre in length, could be a little bigger, nothing like in the USA where you have many different kinds, Russell is growing so fast beautiful boy, tfs guys x Julie 🇬🇧

Russell is so handsome!! ❤ I say leave the snake on the farm!! You need him & it's a good trade! He keeps the bad guys away & you feed him an egg or 2 every few days. It's a win-win!

Keep them black snakes around so my buddy smeegle don't get bit again. I was very worried about him. He's my favorite animal on your farm. Him and the other cat you don't see very much then it goes to mojo those are the top 3 favs for me

He’s a little black snake. We never got rid of our black snakes, but we didn’t have a bunch of chickens to protect (we had rabbits, pigs and horses).I love watching them eat eggs! They never ate our rabbits (we had around 100).

Rachel, you should keep your favorite, well, maybe not your fave, but keep some nail polish handy so when you have to relocate a snake, you can mark its head, or somewhere, lol so you can tell if they're returning, and you keep relocating the same ones😊❤

I didn't know a black snake could open its mouth around an egg like that.😮

😂😂😂...at you talking to the snake!! "Try that one out. It's going to taste the same. I promise." ..."Quit messing with the big one and eat the small one. Come on."......😂😂😂

Kevin I would love to see some of the pups as they grow. Would you tell us where we can go to see them? I love Russell, he's such a great little dog. I can't count the times I have mistaken him for Kora. Thnx for a good video today and watching the snake eat the eggs was awesome.

🤷‍♀️ personally I think the black snakes around the farm are safer than having copperheads! We live on a lake and have a 4’ black snake that we protect - we don’t have rats OR other snakes around… so ya know what I vote for! Lol you have plenty of eggs and the black snake isn’t gonna hurt the chickens honestly. It never hurt our chickens or our bunnies… those mama bunnies have killed snakes and left them in the pen by the door haha

Kevin, great video. Personal I think you should keep the black snakes around for protection against the other snakes. So what if you lose a few eggs to them, I think it's a great trade off in the long run. Have a wonderful weekend. David B.,Utah. 🦃🐈🐕🇺🇲💞❤❤❤.

Glad y'all got to take time to enjoy fishing with your family. If you're not worried about the snake and it's gonna benefit your farm, let him stay. GOD bless y'all.

We have rat snakes in our yard too. One of them was 5 foot long. The same size as me. Yes, I picked it up and measured it. We have rat problems. I am just a old woman that loves snakes. I am so happy that Mr. Smeagle is doing okay. I have outdoor stray cats and I do worry about them getting bit. They don't want to come inside at all. I live in North Georgia in the country. I loved the snake video. Happy Memorial Day.
