Very good advice. i went out for a drive as passed the other week and keep doing exactly what you said in this vid. I realise im.going the wrong way and then try quickly force myself across. Yesterday across a car was in the lane i tried to go into quickly and i hadnt checked mirrors properly, it had to swerve out the way never felt so scared! I'm def going to stick to what you have said just carry on. I think i was worried about ending up on the motorway that's why i moved over quickly but its better to be safe than sorry!x
Passed my theory other day bud, it was my third attempt though but hey ho I passed it just one more test to go! Here are my results I got 43 for the multiple choice and I got 60 for the hazard perception. One more test to go, hope I pass it first time with flying colours.
Thank you so much for this. This area had been a big weakness for me. I took my first driving test last week and unfortunately failed for a silly reason (going too quick through a width restriction!). However my examiner was confident in my driving and how I handled roundabouts, during sat nav section I had to take a third exit but no one would let me into the right hand lane so i followed your advice by staying calm and just stayed in my lane, taking a safer line and just going straight on. Although I failed, I actually left feeling proud! Absolutely confident I’ll pass next time :)
Hi Travis, recently started driving again after 5 months and I'm slowly getting back to my "best". Thanks for your videos, they helped me feel less nervous about getting back behind the wheel
Often the problem with roundabouts is learners get SO stressed about going the 'correct' way it all goes out of the window and goes wrong. It even happens to qualified drivers, they cut other drivers up and swerve across lanes as they are SO focused on going the correct way.
Happens all the time, people choose the wrong lane and force their way in. Very scary, I've had to brake hard to avoid hitting them, yet they don't seem to care.
I wished I watched this video beforehand, I was on a really large 3 lane roundabout and had to cut a lane and failed because of it. Now I’ve got to wait 2 months for another test.
If you are ready for a test. Use a cancellation service to get you one in a week or two. But check with your instructor there availability first. Link is in the description
The examiner told me to turn right on the roundabout. Unfortunately, I took the left lane as I had been practicing using the straight ahead lane. On the roundabout, the examiner for some reason said I'm going right not left. I moved over to the right lane and had I just stuck to my lane I would have passed. I ended up with a serious fault and failed the test.
Sounds like a classic thing people do on the test. If it happens again, take control of the situation and say, sorry i will turn back at the next opportunity and carry on where I left off. Good luck on your next test.
Failed my test again on simple things, one was for keeping to the right for too long and one was for exiting the roundabout too late and moving to the left when I shouldn't have because their was 2 lanes.
@@JamesTravis I don't have an instructor do you thing that's the problem? Honestly I failed on simple things do you think I need a few lessons with an instructor?
If you take the wrong exit . Don't do a sudden u turn. Take the next left turn and a quiet road to turn around or carry on to the next roundabout to get back on route.
I failed my driving test for changing lanes in a roundabout. So just come off, don't switch lanes even if it is empty. Which mine was. JUST come.off or go back around
Hi Travis, A bit of confusion to me this video... Please help me to understand... You say if you are a wrong lane you should go round...it is clear for me,but if you go round in the inside lane (right lane) you will still in the inside lane if you go round...nothing gonna change, just you gonna make an extra round I think....Another think what I am not understand.... If you are the wrong lane like in your video. You could not go to the second exit because you were in the right lane ....My question is why you could not do that for the second exit than the third exit? I mean after first exit signal left and leave the second exit... Same as the third and fourth exit ...I am really confused now ...sorry..:)Thank you so much for your help...
I am not sure if I am describing it right but as he gets back to where he started he is able to check and change back where he started and come off in the desired lane. Does that make sense.
Hi. Thanks for sharing the information. Just had a small doubt. For example if examiner sked us to take first exit and we mistkenly took right lane(as shown) and after we came on correct lane by circling the roundabout. Will it be consider as a fault? If yes will it be mimor or major fault? Thanks in advance.
That’s an interesting question. If you are on a lesson with an instructor then it’s ok to go on a Motorway providing you are at a good standard. If you are on your driving test, I would expect the examiner to avoid going anywhere near a motorway.
I am not sure this fully addresses the question. If you were in the right lane and you need to to exit, of course you can just go around changing lanes per exit. But if you were in the left lane, and needed a later exit, what do you do? You said you just take the wrong lane. Well what if this means you'd get lost and don't have GPS on you. How would you get back on to your route? I'm talking more about driving as opposed to the test.
Sat nav’s/gps are a new thing that most of the time helps. There has been plenty of times over the years when I took the wrong exit, I just pulled over and either turned round and carried on or looked at my map before carrying on with the journey.
Hi Travis, thank you for the wonderful video. Just wondering, if I did have the opportunity to change lane safely, will I be breaking the traffic rules if I did?
hi I hope you are doing well. could you please give me advice about wrong lane in Enter to round about. if I should be in left lane for second exit but i was in right lane , what should I do after enter to the roundabout? Will this mistake make me fail the exam? Is there any way I can correct the mistake? thanks for your reply
Hi quick question, is it wrong to signal as you change lanes once entered inside the roundabout and carry on there in left position to take your exit? Or are you only allowed to signal just before your exit, and just looking to move left is fine because signalling to change position would make them think you're leaving the roundabout?
Hi, if you signal to change lanes and don’t change lanes then that’s confusing to other road users. If you want to change lanes from right to left or even left to right, then inform other road users with a signal first.
@@JamesTravis Thank you, but what if they interpret my signal to change lanes inside, as a signal to exit the roundabout? So i was thinking its safer (if there are no markings on the ground) to slide to the lane with only checking? Can you help please
Also on big roundabouts it can confuse me. When I’m going right I do everything right and as I’m going around the roundabout I eventually get to the exit and I’m in the wrong lane even though I entered the roundabout in the right hand lane so I think as I’m going around the roundabout I have to come across into the other lanes correct? I know not all roundabouts are like this. How do I know when I have to come across?
But what if you're in a lane heading towards a motorway? That is the problem i had recently and there was no choice but to move over to another lane (luckily it was quiet at the time). I don't know if i would be instantly be failed for that or not
A lot would depend on you changing lanes safely. If it is safe then you would be ok. Usually if on a driving test the examiner would know where the motorway entrance is and avoid it on route. If on your lessons with an instructor you went onto a motorway, then that is ok as long as your instructor thinks you are at a good standard.
Thank you for your video. Can you tell me what is the correct thing to do in this instance please on a 2 lane r/a - You think you're going straight over and are in the left lane, then realise at the exit you thought you were going to take, that you wanted to turn right? Can you change your indicators to indicate right and continue to go round the roundabout? Thank you.
Thanks a lot sir. Today 8am my test. Plz pray for me. So if I miss lane on roundabout I should continue the lane I’m , isn’t it? So for lane miss wrong lane I enter for this will examiner fail me? Plz let me know. Thanks
Hello Travis, just a quick question! As a learner driver, if I realise that I am in the roundabout lane to go onto the motorway, should I avoid going down that lane at all costs? Or is it still safer to go down that lane onto the motorway where it's illegal for me to drive?
You are allowed in England to go on the motorway with an approved driving instructor as long as the driving instructor deems you to be at a good standard. If you are learning with a friend, You would try safely to change lanes to avoid going onto the slip road of a motorway. If you are unfortunate to be starting on a slip road onto a motorway as a learner with a friend, then pull over on the slip road ASAP and switch seats with your friend who can drive.
Travis, head done in, test tomorrow passed mock today but told roundabout knowledge flawed where 4 or 5 exits and 3rd exit is midday told use right lane not left. This is against 12 oclock rule, what thoughts, NO PAINT on floor to what is a medium to small ish 4 exit roundabout going straight on, I'm left lane, told must be right, doesn't add up and fried head, looks like is two schools thought on this !? cheers Dan
I would of used left lane if at 12 o’clock position for 3 exit. But some roundabouts could be different and local to that area. It could be there is normally lane markings on ground, but worn out which asks you to use right lane.
Unfortunately I don’t have a diesel car. When I used one I found the clutch very forgiving to the extent that it was easy for my learners to drive. But I did notice that on low gears the car reacted very different to that of a petrol car. Hope you manage to find a video on it.
No driving fault is recorded for safely driving along the wrong route. Driving faults will be awarded for using the wrong lane and going a different way to that indicated on the road markings or signalling incorrectly for the course you drive. Suddenly changing lanes on a roundabout is a fault which is going to be regarded as anything up to dangerous depending on circumstances.
At that point the instructor would continue to direct you as per normal. If you were learning with a family member, they would need to stop on the side and switch places with you. If you were on a test the examiner would avoid the roundabout in the first case.
The problem is more complex than getting in the wrong lane and simply going that way to solve the problem. You need to get into the wrong lane and signal appropriately for the lane you use giving correct indications well ahead on approach and as you go through for the course you drive. If there is a mismatch you will be given a fault which may be serious depending on circumstances
I passed my driving test first time yesterday with 2 minors, thanks a lot for your videos

I would not class it as a fault as long as you complete it safely. If it kept happening, they might give you a fault for awareness and planning.
