How To Read Roundabout Signs | Learn to drive: Intermediate skills

- The ability to read roundabout signs is essential for any driver in the UK, as we have thousands of roundabouts. They are everywhere and come in all different shapes and sizes. Some have only 2 exits, and others up to 6. Some are very small, and others are huge - and have the national speed limit! Since there is no such thing as a ‘standard roundabout’, in this video we will explain why we must read the sign before a roundabout to understand its layout and cross it safely.

Roundabout are difficult to read on the go at high speeds
Try slowing down a bit
You shouldn't be going through a roundabout at high speeds. Your speed should be under 24 kph in a roundabout.
Why would you do that?
Utilise Google maps >>Satellite Mode>>Zoom in on your journey step by step on roundabouts. I have anxiety and this helps me navigate new places so hope this helps :)
Absolutely love simple roundabouts, dreading the moment I need to driver on bigger/multi-lane roundabouts .I feel like there will be no enough time to read signs and count exits.
True
I am not good in following sign when driving, so thanks to Mat and his wife for making this video, this is very helpful not just for me but to other learners too.
Passed my driving test today with 2 minors! Thanks for your videos as they were very helpful and I will definitely continue to watch them! 👍
Wooo! Well done 🚙😃👍🏼
08:45 sums it all up.
The safest thing you can do on a roundabout other than a left hand first exit is a complete lap of the damn thing and then decide upon your exit on Lap 2. 🤣
Hello everyone,
We are a start-up based in Glasgow working on developing a smart device for cars that turns the rear-window into a display which can autonomously sense tailgating and display a “Maintain Safe Distance” warning on the rear-window without causing any rear-view obstruction.
We have practically tested this out using a basic prototype and found the results to be very positive, as we realised that most drivers tailgate unintentionally and when they notice the “Maintain Safe Distance” sign on the car in front of them, most of them back off.
While, the device can also be used for on-road communication like expressing gratitude or saying sorry (using simple voice commands on a mobile app), which is usually done by flashing hazard lights (which as you know is illegal).
We are currently working on developing the final product in association with the Edinburgh Napier University, while we have also validated the product with the Department for Transport and the Road Policing Department and confirmed that it is legal on the road.
I would highly appreciate if you could provide us with some feedback on how we can better develop the product and if you find the product appealing and suitable for purpose, could you please sign up here- www.unitic.io - to stay updated with the product development cycle and get a flat 20% off when we launch on Kickstarter. The link will take you to our home page which also contains a short animated video that explains the complete functionality of the product.
Please feel free to share this with your friends and family who might be interested in such a product. Also, we welcome any questions you may have- email them to admin@unitic.io
I'm currently learning to drive and I'd love to try out this system. It's something I've been waiting to see for years.

A big big thanks to you and your team truly even being old drivers it is worth watching your video I recommend because what that you teach is perfect for safer , confident and nice driving
Thanks very much once again for such brilliant knowledge sharing videos
Love and respect for you
It’s a brilliant channel.. It has helped me pass my driving test and I am sure it is helping alot of people who is learning to drive.. All your work is very very professional, thank you. Cheers..
From Canada: The first thing that hit me about the Roundabout signs is that the left hand side of the sign is normally covered by vegitation as displayed at 0:11 to a very minor extent. I have seen Motorway signs that have the entire left half of the sign covered.
For roundabouts I have found that the early sign indicates the large towns, while the signs at the exits in the roundabout indicate local keypoints.
I love the roundabouts once I have a good idea of where to go, and know which exit to take.
I’ve been waiting years for this. A great recap on roundabouts which can be confusing at times. Many thanks, and great to see the channel expanding.👍🌞🇬🇧👍
I passed my driving test on November 4th this month . Thanks for your videos as they are very helpful and I still watch them to build up my confidential level .

@@AdvanceDrivingSchool yes please spiral and multi lane roundabouts. So confusing as looking at the lane marking on the floor and trying to look at mirrors at same time and follow signs and count exists all at same time make it super confusing causing anxiety. Help needed please!!!

I think this driving school company should be the biggest one in the UK. Ive learned so much more since i passed my test by watching these videos. I always watch these videos. I like how professional it is aswell. Btw its slightly harder to drive in Wales as there are 2 languages on our signs haha. But im used to it now, everytime i drive into England. The writing appears massive compared to road signs in Wales.

Thanks , this is useful . Can you also please make a video about large spiral roundabouts on how to navigate those ? Those seem to be most confusing sometimes as it’s not as simple as left lane = left/straight turn etc. Would be great to know your expertise on this.

Nice good 👍
I think it's a joke that the highway code doesn't mention glaring aspects of driving such as the small stubs on roundabouts. It's still confusing me - are the stubs a no entry or an entrance to a road that only some will need to use (Farm access/maintenance)
Good video
Excellent video, should be compulsory for some of these drivers that simply don't have a clue, or are so arrogant they just don't adhere to any format of safe driving.
Why the police don't police these roundabouts by cameras I don't know, they would make a fortune in fines, then send these idiots to roundabout school. Instead of issuing fines to those doing a couple of miles over the limit. Also there are roundabouts that are clearly marked up incorrectly, this is the fault of the councils, who in some cases have no idea what is straight ahead is, there is one at Denbigh in Denbighshire, the Ruthin side of Denbigh, it has the turning for Ruthin as straight ahead, when in fact it is well beyond the 180 degree mark and should be signed as a right turn. It causes lots of near misses, especially when there are drivers that have simply no idea of roundabout procedures and lane discipline. And since when has the highway code said there is no need to give a signal when leaving a roundabout, cause an accident and it will be their fault.
Hi, great video. Would appreciate if you'd include signals on the bottom left of the screen too with the speedometer as I sometimes signal too late at the roundabouts.
This video might help you understand when to indicate: How To Indicate Precisely ruclips.net/video/rHDS-S1qXCU/видео.html 👍🏼
Could you do a video about angle parking? Both forward bay and reverse angle parking?
We have already done both of those - have a look in our Manoeuvres playlist 👍🏼
Hey i have a question when wanting to turn on to the left hand lane but parked cars are on the left hand side what should i do? Stay on the left and signal right or come off the roundabout in the right hand lane?
We would indicate normally, and keep as far to the left as possible.
Good
Hi, @4.36 Thetford was 3rd exit & 12 o’clock method u positioned ur car to the left lane at the round about but my DI always told me to position the car on right with right signal on from beginning & then change to left lane after counting 2nd exit with signal. If I do that on my test day would it be a fail then ?
Which lane does the Highway Code suggest for going straight ahead? The number of the exit doesn’t make any difference to which lane you use. 👍🏼
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool thank u, I’ve got it. I should use left lane all the way till Thetford exit. 😁
Just quick question for right 1st exit what do you mean no bearing lane how would I know that if I come across ?
What we are saying is that we choose our lane according to the direction we are going at the roundabout. The number of the exit has no bearing on what lane we use 👍🏼
Just one more quick question that's new to me thank you for that so can't you go left 1st exit on that one?
No - if you watch as I drive around the roundabout, the road on the left isn’t an exit from the roundabout - it only allows traffic to join.
Nice video!! At 5:31 I thought it was first exit but turning left?? Why did you stay on the right lane? Thanks for your help!
Have another look at the sign at 5:15 - that roundabout has only 2 exits. We were turning right, 1st exit - so used the right lane as usual when turning right. The number of the exit has no bearing on the lane we use.
In the last route all roundabout signs wrre hidden among trees. Roundabout signs should be in an open area with large scales to be read as quickly as possible while driving in motorways. Do you agree?
We definitely agree - what’s the point of having signs if they can’t be read easily? The council should do a better job of trimming the trees to maintain the signs visibility! Oh, and don’t even get me started about faded road markings.... 😬
A quick question. If on my driving test, I realize I've driven into the wrong lane, e.g. I entered the left lane wanting to go straight but it's actually a left turn lane only, what should I do? Should I turn left as the road marking indicates or should I try to go to the right lane? Thank you in advance.
We should do whatever is safest. If there is time to change lanes safely, then do that. If it is too late, just follow wherever the lane goes. As long as we don’t break any rules there won’t be a fault given for taking the wrong road.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thank you very much! I really enjoy all of your videos. Very high quality.
hi I hope you are doing well. could you please give me advice about wrong lane in Enter to round about.
if I should be in left lane for second exit but i was in right lane , what should I do after enter to the roundabout? Will this mistake make me fail the exam?
Is there any way I can correct the mistake?
thanks for your reply
The easiest solution is to indicate right, go all the way around the roundabout and take your exit next time round. Since this wouldn’t break any rules there should be no fault in the test. 👍🏼
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool thanks alot your answer
What does (A143) under Gt. Barton mean? What does the A stand for please?
It's the name of the road to Great Barton. Since it is an 'A' road that means it is a major road, 'B' roads are much smaller, and of course motorways are a "M' road.
Hiya , I forgot to ask but at 7.00 clip on rounbout is it 4th exit you came off at ?
No, we turned right 5th exit. We include businesses (eg Tesco) when we are counting the exits. 👍🏼
@Advance Driving School on the roundabout sign at 5:19 Bury St. Edmunds direction, is it not counted as 2nd exit?
If you watch as we drive around the roundabout we do take the first exit. The ‘stump’ on the sign at about 10 o’clock is only an entrance onto the roundabout for other traffic. 👍🏼
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool yes I noticed that. A bit confusing some of this stumps. Some are thick, thin, with arrow pointing and some have two parallel stumps in same direction. Please can you do a more in depth video explaining the stumps on roundabout signs.
Roundabout signs seem to vary a lot, and it’s impossible to make rules that apply everywhere. It’s always tricky when teaching pupils on our driving lessons as there is always a sign that is ‘different’ in some way!
If you take 3rd exit straight ahead are you gonna signal right? Or signal left after the 2nd exit.
If we’re going straight ahead we only need to indicate as we leave the roundabout. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the 1st, 2nd or 3rd exit!
If during my driving test, they ask me to go towards Manchester and I can't read the direction well, can I ask the officer which exit should I take? Or not?
Of course - this video might help: Independent Driving: ruclips.net/video/UU1v-SoWF7Y/видео.html 👍🏼
Thank you for the video. However, I was wondering why the stump on the roundabout sign at 4:29 counts as an exit but the one at 5:14 doesn't. They're both stumps
In fairness the second sign is quite misleading, as the stump shows an entrance onto the roundabout instead of an exit!
Why are some exit lines on roundabout signs thicker than others? Is it due to how many lanes are on that exit, or whether its an A road/B road??
It’s just to indicate how large a road is 👍🏼
In 5:22 video 1st right exit before you approaching roundabout its needs to indicate right? as the 1st exit it on the right side.
Yes, we do indicate right at that roundabout.
What would you do when approaching a roundabout with 3 exits, left, straight and right, where it has 3 separate lanes, also they are unmarked with no signs or floor markings, I assumed left for left middle for straight on and right lane for turning right as it is normally but some have told me this is incorrect?
It is rare to have 3 lanes onto a roundabout - but if you find one we would use the lanes as you described, unless there are road markings stating otherwise.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool so just to confirm left for turning left, middle for straight on and right hand lane for turning right?
Yes, unless there are road markings or signs to show otherwise.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool so is that format like the default just as for 2 Lane roundabouts left is for left and straight on and right is for right?
No, the Highway Code doesn't state anything about larger roundabouts with more than 2 lanes - it just sounds logical to us. The trouble is, other people might decide to use the lanes differently - so keep out of other people's blind spots just in case they aren't going where we think they are!
Spirals next please....great video though!
It’s on our list!
Would you check your blindspot in every lane change whilst driving? Including roundabouts
That depends on the situation, but any time we are on a faster road or have lots of space beside our car we would definitely check over our shoulder for danger before changing lanes.
5:20 words are quite confusing turning right first exit, where as looking at round about its better to say the 2nd exit which easy to understand related to 12oclock rule, but also helps to select the right lane
The first little line on the sign isn’t an exit from the roundabout, so we did actually turn right, 1st exit!
Can SAT-NAV tell us correctly which is "left or right". When it says, "Turn Right on the Roundabout", can we rely on it being any lane which is after 12 o'clock (bcoz we know the number of exit doesnt matter)?
Not really, as some larger roundabouts have several exits to the right. That’s why we need to count as in this video: ruclips.net/video/to4_q-GWBVg/видео.html 👍🏼
So when do I signal when going straight ahead at a roundabout? Also Is cross the roundabout going ahead? What if going ahead exit is after 12 o’clock??
This video might help with your indicating: Signalling / Indicating Correctly: ruclips.net/video/e7uYp0sUq3o/видео.html
If your exit is past 12 o’clock then you should probably treat it as a right turn. 👍🏼
lane discipline on a roundabout that do not have markings ?
if the Road Bury Edmund at 5:20 the 1st exit, why does the Roundabout sign shows 2 exits in total? One left and the other right?
The ‘lump’ on the sign at 9 o’clock shows an entrance onto the roundabout - the first exit is the road to Bury St Edmunds.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thank u, ohh so the shorter lump on the sign always mean "entrance"?
I wish it did mean that - but in some places it is an exit. Confusing!
At 5:53 which number exit was straight ahead and was this the last exit but on the road marking the left lane says you can go left and straight and the other lane only straight but there is no other option for another direction
I’m not sure why it isn’t marked on the road like the other directions, but we would always use the right lane to turn right.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Yes of course but there is a roundabout which I take and it's the last exit on the sign but it's the third exit and it's like 12oclock but in this case both lanes are marked with straight arrows which lane is a good choice if you have time I can tell you which roundabout and maybe you can check it on maps
If the exit is at 12 o’clock on the sign then we would normally use the left lane to go ahead. If the left lane is busy we would then consider using the right lane, since the road markings allow us to go ahead there. It doesn’t matter whether there is a right turn or not at the roundabout we should still use the normal lane choices for that direction. If everyone used different lanes when they spotted unusual roundabout layouts it would be chaos!
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool I want to take the third exit and on the sign it's last exit located around 3o'clock but when in the roundabout it's appears straight at 12o'clock and so do I treat this as straight as both lanes allow me to go straight ahead
We always follow whatever direction the sign shows, not any local knowledge that suggests the exit is more to the right (or left). That way everyone should be treating the roundabout in the same way, which is far safer!
Morning. I’m a failing PDi at PT3 , thought passed PT2 I’ve serious roundabout anxiety. Could you please help. A normal and small ish roundabout with 4 exits two to the left one dead ahead and one to the right. With 2 unmarked lanes on approach. Going dead ahead 12pm on sign I follow theory and use left Lane for 12pm. ADi teaching part 2 and 3 says no. No. And No again. You must use right Lane on approach. But this is totally at odds with the theory and your video 4:30-5:15 time stamps. Thanks. Subtleties and Lane markings I’m cool with. But following theory and having this curve ball thrown at me ADi that as more than one turn left use right Lane has beaten me totally. Thanks reply. I’m not progressing. I’ve hit a learning plateau
Without seeing the roundabout in question we can’t comment on how we would do it - except that we try to follow what the Highway Code defaults are unless there are road markings to say otherwise. Perhaps ask your teacher to explain why they use the right lane?
I’d prefer using online map (iPhone/ garmin) but trying to read sign while driving, a challenge reading signs and keeping eyes on road tough
Even when using a sat-nav it’s useful to check the road signs, in case the roads have changed since the sat-nav map was made 👍🏼
Why are the exits not numbered on the signs? It would make it much easier.
can somebody plz tell me how at 5:20 St Edmund is the first exit, the sign shows its the second. This short stub in the sign is supposed to be an exit (but in reality its an entry here)
As we drive around the roundabout you can see that there are no exits before the one we take - so we do take the first exit. We do agree that the sign is slightly misleading though!
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool its clear once u know it beforehand, but the sign says to the contrary. That is not a sign for an entry as far as I know.
Can I use roundabouts as U-turn slots?
If you are asking whether you can use a roundabout to turn around and go the other way - then yes 👍🏼
Are driving tests back on for everyone ?
Almost - we heard from 22nd July 👍🏼
🙏🙏🙏
This is Great Britain with so many roundabouts.🇬🇧👩🏻🎤
The music is very disturbing otherwise a great and amazing video.already subscribed!
Absolutely roundabout everywhere in the UK just like peoples. We must be careful!
5:17 why Bury st edmunds is the 1st exit but not 2nd?
If you watch as I drive around the roundabout, the road on the left isn’t an exit from the roundabout - it only allows traffic to join.
Advance Driving School but from the sign I can’t tell there isn’t exit for the first, right? Not until I drive on the roundabout
The doesn't really make much difference - as we know we are turning right, so as long as we position in the right lane we will be able to safely drive around the roundabout until we find our exit.
Little B on the roundabout sign, the road to the left has a square end, but normal exits have an arrow shape pointing outwards from the roundabout
@@Thomashorsman some local exits on a larger roundabout, with no 'destination' may still have a squared edge. It's one of my bug bears when teaching in my area.
8:53 why doesn't he check the left blind spot when crossing lane to exit?
Usually a normal mirror check is enough to see it is safe to leave the roundabout - however if there is lots of traffic, or someone is nearby to us we would check our blind spot as well. It just depends on the situation. 👍🏼
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thank you so much for your response!
Is true I did lost many time. I hope will be change soon. I have one vote for change!!!!!!
I actually think mini roundabouts are harder because you have literally so little time to indicate. On my way to work I walk I walk pass a mini roundabout and I saw so many cars not bothering to signal at ALL.
They can be tricky. We made a separate video about Mini Roundabouts here if you haven’t already seen it: ruclips.net/video/bBJm3uum800/видео.html 👍🏼
I'm from Ipswich and I've never driven on a Motorway or Spiral round about before. They can be confusing with the amount off lanes and exits.
I made my own Highway Code rule
You are behind a learner driver waiting at a junction what should you do?
Mark one
A. Keep a normal distance
B. Beep at them to make them go
C. Give them plenty of room and a few seconds to move off
Answer: C. Give then plenty of room and a few seconds to move off
Learner drivers are unpredictable especially when at or braking at junctions, give them about 2 car lengths of space to give them confidence, also consider giving them time to move off just in case they brake or stall suddenly
That is indeed a much civilized driving habit. Unfortunately, based on my experience of driving in a third world country, drivers behind in some areas usually indulge in road rage if they think one is holding them back. This could happen in both cases w.r.t stopping at a junction:
1) One stops to give space to a learner driver ahead
2) One stops at the junction himself
Usually drivers behind just can not bear the case that they would have to wait any longer than usual (they struggle to tolerate full stops at junctions). Road rage can be in from of honking, abruptly getting in front, and even the person himself coming out for confrontation.
Despite having a natural desire for courtesy and consideration, driving for me based on my environment has been about making more agile decisions such that courtesy and consideration are well planned and does not result in unwanted road rage or harm from impatient/reckless drivers that share the roads.
Passed today with 3 minors. Terrified to go on roundabouts by myself xx
Well done! Maybe go for a nice easy drive when the roads are quiet? 🚙👌🏼😃
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool I did what you suggested. Still nervous but better. Thanks
This is so weird that this os filmed where i live haha small world
Exit to Ipswich yeah yeah
Hang on, did you say roundabouts come in all shapes and sizes? Pretty sure they're all round. Not seen any squarabouts.
0:25 I recently saw a roundabout with 7 exits
We should demond government make rule for straight 2nd exit always outer lane like 1st exit .
1,3,4 no issue as always same rule with 12 clock rule only rule changes for 2nd exit and some time road marking cover with front vehicle, if government always apply default rule for 2nd straight exit then more safer ,
Safety should more preference than slowness of traffic
Buuuut the roundabout signs are always difficult to read. Trees + high speed 😅
