I think good advice for learner drivers on roundabouts is to remember that you are in a CIRCLE. Don’t be afraid to miss your exit and go round again if you’re not confident the first time, yes you might feel silly but being safe is always better than taking risks.
@@katefreeman6798I think in that case you need to signal right and change to the right hand lane until you just pass the exit before the one you're taking, because you can't go all around the roundabout staying the the left hand lane
I tried doing that: I signalled right to change lane on a large roundabout after realising I'd missed my exit and reaching a red traffic light. There was no other traffic in this section and, since I had already reached the stop line, I figured I'd better wait for the lights to change before moving across. The lights began to change for me just as the traffic waiting at the set of lights some distance behind me set off. Since I was already signalling (after dark and with no traffic around me to block the view from those approaching), I thought my intention was clear and set off into the next lane as the light turned green, ahead of the approaching vehicles, only to be honked at by the driver behind whose lane I'd just entered... I was trying to drive appropriately but the driver behind didn't seem to think that I had... Yet, if I'd waited for the approaching traffic to overtake me before moving out, I would have blocked everybody in my own lane from turning left before the lights changed again... Alternatively, I could have given up, signalled left and exited the roundabout... But that would have taken me onto the big scary motorway I was keen to avoid, alone, at night, with neither SatNav nor any sense of direction or location and already disorientated by the roundabout itself... Advice for future reference? Should I have waited for the approaching traffic on the right to overtake me, thereby blocking all the others turning left? Should I have cut my losses and exited onto the big scary motorway despite my disorientation? Should I have gone over the stop line at the red light in order to change lanes in advance while the road was still clear? Or should the approaching driver have noted my clear and unobstructed signal and simply let me out as he approached the changing lights? Thanks!
I like that you use the phrase "penultimate exit" it really seems to drill it into one's mind how important it is to show intentions to other drivers as soon as is safely possible.

My instructor did exactly the same thing with me just before Christmas he told me that he had left the company and said good luck I tried getting a new instructor for my test but not able to so doing it in my uncles car instead xxxx
Rich, this video is a MASSIVE help. I failed my first test attempt last week at St Marks roundabout (in Salisbury) exactly because if this. It was rush hour too (I couldn't get a test for after 9am). Up to that point, I was doing so well a pass first time was on the cards... but I panicked about changing lanes, despite my examiner giving me the helpful suggestion to take the middle lane 😖
Just came back to this video after passing my test yesterday despite my driving instructor ditching me a month before the test and having to do the test in my own car. I cannot understate how much your videos along with Ashley Neal’s videos helped me prep for the test. Would recommend these videos to all learners looking for study materials to brush up on their driving.
I finally passed, and I tip my drivers hat to you sir! I even recommended your channel for my driving instructor to become even a better driving instructor :)
Have you asked any examiners why they are so harsh with drivers who don't pull in to the slow lane? Might make a good video and we'd all learn something. This was a really helpul video. I passed my test 30 odd years ago and I found it clear and insightful. Thank you.
Interesting point you bring up that the only criteria for a road to be a dual carriageway is the existence of a physical separator between the two opposing carriageways and that the number of lanes is irrelevent. You are absolutely correct of course. I had reason to reaserch this very topic some time ago and found the same answer. It was my sat nav that prompted me to dig into this topic deeper. Reason being, there is a short stretch of "dual carriageway" with just one lane in each direction on a NSL road near where I live. I noticed whenever I enter that stretch of "one lane dual carriageway", my sat nav shows a change in speed limit from 60 to 70 mph and then back down to 60 mph as I exit that short stretch of one lane dual carriageway and back onto the stretch that is genuinely single carriageway. Of course, I realise that sat nav speed limits can be incorrect / out of date and that actual road signs take precedence. However, in this case, further research as to the actual laws confirmed sat nav is indeed displaying the correct speed limit along this stretch, with no contradiction of signage. To be honest, I don't actually bother increasing to 70 mph and back to 60 mph, especially as there is a gap for turning vehicles and a staggered junction either side of this short stretch of dual carriageway.
Thank you! Coming back to driving after ~7 years roundabouts are one of the scariest things to navigate, drifting left just feels wrong. Still I'll do it earlier after watching this video.
I passed my driving test Today with 4 minors in the first attempt and your videos helped me so much. Thanks for your instruction. I got one minor for not checking blindspot over my shoulders while changing lanes in dual carriage way at 30 speed limit area. I was not aware of this one at all. May be you can talk about this in your next video. Thanks again for your videos, they are very useful.
@@ConquerDriving You'll be glad to know that I had my test yesterday and passed first time, surprisingly with only two minor faults! Now I can drive into town, if I ever see you I'll give you a wave :)

I passed my test last week in single attempt with just 6 minors. Your videos were of so much help! i watched the roundabout videos just before the test as i am always anxious on roundabouts ! your suggestions were really useful
Richard! Thanks you of the wonderful information and guide you provided about exiting the roundabout... I watched your video many times before i went for my driving test. This really helped me to pass my Test Today. Thank very much.
6:42 this situation is a bit tricky. In my country, there's still a good amount of people that do the roundabout on the outer lane, even if they are leaving in the last one. So some times my exit is coming up and I need to change to the outer lane, but there is a car there. No biggie, the exit has two lanes, we both fit. But then I have to pray that they will leave in the same exit as I will.
I lived in Spain for a while, and apparently the driving instructors there teach students to stay in the outer lane no matter what exit they take, which annoys all of the tourists from other countries that actually use the inner lane of the roundabout.
Truly superb coverage of this topic Rchard. One issue I sometimes find when wanting to slide over to the left one exit prior: Traffic ahead of me in my (right) lane either stopped or moving very slowly. This can often happen on a roundabout controlled by traffic lights but also on ones that don't have traffic lights. You might then say "Well just wait for the queued traffic ahead of you to start moving again and then slide over to the left". The problem is, if my lane on the right is backed up / stationary but the lane on my left that I want to drift over to is free flowing, then it can be a challange. Especially since that left lane is likely to have vehicles that joined the roundabout at a subsequent entry point to mine and have a relatively free run to the same exit that I want, whereas I am baulked. Sure, I will put my left indicator on to "ask" to be let in but no guarantees.
That is a tricky situation to deal with. On the road sometimes it's not possible to go the way you want to go safely. There can be too many cars and sometimes other drivers are reluctant to help and don't want you in front of them. It's important not to stop in a free flowing lane and wait for someone to let you change into a lane with stationary traffic though.
Brilliant ur all videos are worth helpful for who need . I am glad that i am getting videos from u like this and its helping me specially because i m indian in the uk seans last 3 years and now i m trying to give practicals than you very much

I'm sorry to hear that, it's great that you have already rebooked. Try to stay positive and not let it bring you down, keep on trying, when you pass it will be all worth it.
Hi Lisa, I recently passed on my 4th attempt. Try chewing some gum and drink water on the 'pull up on the left' breaks. This may ground you a bit. I was nervous too. Good luck.
Hi Richard, nice video. I got my driving license in Italy many years ago. I am now living in Colchester and I noticed that how to drive on roundabouts in UK and Italy are different. I am not talking about driving left or right. In Italy all the roundabouts can be entered on the external line. If you are in the internal you need to switch lane, giving the priority, before exiting. This makes the roundabouts safe to approach as they are all the same. On the other hand it create more traffic as people will prioritise the external lane, not using the others. In UK the approach to the roundabouts prioritise the traffic flow but then the driver has to analyse the roundabout before approaching. This situation is good where the road sign and visibility are good but if some of the road signs are fading it makes more difficult for new drivers.
In my country (which drives on the right), it's pretty simple. At least it's supposed to be, in theory. You change into rightmost lane, and you leave. It doesn't matter if there are multiple lanes on the exit - you are only allowed to exit from the rightmost lane, unless indicated otherwise by signs or markings (which is pretty rare). Needless to say, in practice, many drivers exit from inner lanes. Often they simply couldn't change lanes in time, cars in the right lane wouldn't let them in. Others (especially in small towns) follow local informal "rules" and choose their lanes according to their exit in advance (similar to the UK). Personally, I sympathise with them. If everyone followed the rule, roundabouts would be even more congested; forcing everyone into the outermost lane creates a bottleneck. Some drivers take advantage of that, driving around in circles waiting for their "victim", and when someone exits from the wrong lane, they intentionally ram into him to try and claim compensation. In some cities there were even whole gangs that did this stuff. Another drawback is evident here - it defeats the point of driving in the inner lanes, why bother changing lanes when you can simply stay in the outermost lane, you'll also be in the right if an accident occurs. There is hope though. Turbo roundabouts, which use signs and markings to direct drivers into the "right" lane, are starting to be implemented in some places. They generally allow you to exit from multiple lanes. Some of them though, have become notorious for crashes. This is probably due to infamiliarity.
I failed my test in April because I didn't shoulder check when exiting on the 3rd exit if there was a car nex to me(event though there wasnt any as I had checked my mirrors. But anyhow, now I shoulder-check even if I don't need to. I must say I never knew that, as my instructor never told me, besides the ususal, center mirro side mirrors, signal....I learnt it on the test. But now I'm soo ready to take the test.
I'm sorry to hear that, left should check before leaving a roundabout is not a normal thing to do unless you feel the shape of the lane and the distance you need to move left means someone could be hiding in your blind spot. Good luck with your next test.
@@ConquerDriving thank you. passed finally on the 1st of September. I was very lucky, the road I decided to take to the test center, , (the centre in near a five-way junction, 5 roads can lead to it.) was the where the test initially started with. I was like wohoo...😄
Its the last part of the video I find the most important for learners, not forgetting that you can go around again if you don't feel safe enough to change lanes. I see drivers trying to over take Learners so much just so they don't have to be behind them
That is true, usually I find a left signal and a slight movement to the left tends to get drivers hanging near the blind spot to back off a bit and make room. It is important to be suggestive and clear with your position but not forceful.
I've seen some close calls when someone is taking an exit in a roundabout, but it's a two lane exit, they are in the right lane, the lane to their left can also take the exit, and they just move over into the left lane nearly hitting them.
Depends if that exit is past 12 o'clock position. If it is, use right lane and exit in the left hand lane . If there is a vehicle in the left lane then they're using the wrong lane
@@matdavric If only it was that simple, there are many roundabouts with a third or higher exit (past 12 o'clock ofc) which two lanes can take. Especially bigger roundabouts, which i've even seen 3 lanes being able to take that same exit.
I love all the content But i wish there was a video, about talking gaps when incorporating to a road. Could include distance from the oncoming car, how to launch the car to take the gap, revs and clutch bite point steering and hesitancy relief
Hi, I passed my test in December - your roundabout videos have been an absolute godsend! I still find myself watching your videos, trying to learn more! A topic I'd love for yo to cover is what to do when there are unsafe drivers around you. I was about to exit a roundabout, changing lanes to exit. I checked my mirror, and I saw a car, but I assumed that they would adjust their speed since I had been indicating to a while. The driver started beeping at me as I was changing, and I feel a bit at fault, but on the other hand, you're not supposed to undertake? Scenarios like this is something that hasn't been covered much whilst i was learning to drive, so I'd love to hear some more about that :)
Regarding the case where it's legitimate to take multiple lanes to go ahead AND the road you are turning into has multiple lanes in your direction, I often find that such roundabouts and roads are quite busy and to make traffic flow cars are using both lanes to enter, navigate and exit the roundabout. Drifting to the left isn't practical as there are solid streams of cars in both lanes. That's all fine, but if you happen to use the right hand lane to exit you then find yourself in the "overtaking" lane, doing the speed limit, with cars up your chuff and undertaking you. I guess the only way to deal with that is either (1) hold your ground or better (2) always use the left lane, even if it is slower for you.
Learning to drive at the moment and what gets me annoyed is faded or no lane markings on the roundabout & roads & it's hard to have lane discipline at these points I believe the council's should re paint the roads to make it easier for not only learners but for everyone
In my country, its common practice go let people know that you are going to turn by giving indicators first, then look for a pass, and then pass when its safe to do so. The look first method never really worked here cause roads are unpredictable here. Horns and Indicators are the only thing that are there to make people know that you are here what are your intentions.
Thanks for the video! Helped clear up some confusion I had. Can you do a video on zipper / zip merging and your thoughts on it? Would be interesting :D
I think good advice for learner drivers on roundabouts is to remember that you are in a CIRCLE. Don’t be afraid to miss your exit and go round again if you’re not confident the first time, yes you might feel silly but being safe is always better than taking risks.
If you are in the left lane and miss your exit, should you stay in the left lane while going round again? Would you indicate right? Thanks
@@katefreeman6798I think in that case you need to signal right and change to the right hand lane until you just pass the exit before the one you're taking, because you can't go all around the roundabout staying the the left hand lane
Ok thank you!
Good tip
Thanks!

Richard, passed test August last year but videos really helpful for improving confidence with roundabouts.
Congratulations on passing! This video may be of interest: ruclips.net/video/L59Bl3rQTA4/видео.html
I find your videos to be exceptionally useful as I'm doing my test in Colchester. You're showing me what to do on the exact routes I'll be following!
I’ve got mine in Colchester too so these videos are super helpful!
That's great to hear, good luck with your test!
@@ConquerDriving You'll be glad to know that I had my test yesterday and passed first time, surprisingly with only two minor faults! Now I can drive into town, if I ever see you I'll give you a wave :)
The best video on roundabouts and lanes
passed my test earlier this week your videos really helped! thank you
That's great news, thank you for watching and congratulations on passing!
I pass my TDT AND DVT with only one minor fault, and both at the first attempt, thanks for your videos my friend very helpful 👍👍
That's fantastic news, congratulations on passing!
Just want to say thank you, your videos rock🥳!! Passed my test and your videos helped a lot. Recommended them to couple of friends who are taking their exams soon. Keep up the good work! 👍👍
That's great news, congratulations on passing!
@@ConquerDriving thank you again!!
I passed my test last week in single attempt with just 6 minors. Your videos were of so much help! i watched the roundabout videos just before the test as i am always anxious on roundabouts ! your suggestions were really useful
That's fantastic news! Thank you for watching and congratulations on passing!
I had my driving test last week, I passed with 2 minors. Thank you for all the videos and help!
That's great news, thank you for watching and congratulations on passing!
That lesson I was looking for.
Brilliant ur all videos are worth helpful for who need . I am glad that i am getting videos from u like this and its helping me specially because i m indian in the uk seans last 3 years and now i m trying to give practicals than you very much
I failed again today, my 3rd attempt 😭 I just can’t seem to control my nerves no matter what. I will keep watching i can’t give up already rebooked! Thanks for all your help your videos are great.
Good luck.
I am learning with one of your friend in Aldershot He is D he suggested me to watch all the videos . Is really helped me thank you!
I tried to see where you're indicating but couldn't see it. But the explanations helped. Thanks!
Passed today haahah didn't sleep last night watching these vedios best advice is speak to your instructor and stay calm
That's great news, congratulations on passing!
I've actually done a video on driving in Italy: ruclips.net/video/gjnBWqBfYKs/видео.html
It's the same in my country, and most post-Soviet countries in general.
Thank you so much for explaining this in details a lot of instructiors don’t
I failed cos I got cut up by wagon on the roundabout, this video is amazing!!
I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you for watching and I wish you good luck with your next test.
Passed my test today🎉🎉
You videos are helpful.
You couldn't have failed just for that one missed check though.
I'm sorry to hear that, left should check before leaving a roundabout is not a normal thing to do unless you feel the shape of the lane and the distance you need to move left means someone could be hiding in your blind spot. Good luck with your next test.
@@54356776 tell me about it!. They give you at least 2 majors so that you fail properly. But finally I have passed the test
@@ConquerDriving thank you. passed finally on the 1st of September. I was very lucky, the road I decided to take to the test center, , (the centre in near a five-way junction, 5 roads can lead to it.) was the where the test initially started with. I was like wohoo...😄
Thank you so much, I’ve been very nervous to start driving and this has helped so much!
There's a lot to learn from the video you do a great job .God bless you bro
Thanks so much for this video. Struggling with roundabouts just now so hopefully this video will help!
I like this style of learning.
Thank you I passed my driving test first time
very useful as new driver in uk
What if you cannot change lane ?? Can you slow right down, cause then its a serious fault for mirror change direction,
This came at the right time.
very good point on dual carrier-way road dealing
This is what I was spooking for!! Thank you so much
I've seen some close calls when someone is taking an exit in a roundabout, but it's a two lane exit, they are in the right lane, the lane to their left can also take the exit, and they just move over into the left lane nearly hitting them.
Thank you for sharing this video. It is very helpful.
I love all the content
But i wish there was a video, about talking gaps when incorporating to a road.

This really helped with leaving round abouts. Thanks a lot !
Thanks a lot, amazing and thorough explanation!!!
Richard is the best!
What an amazing and well thought out video, thank you!
Oooh yes indeed you are really helpful!!! Thank you..more blessings for you
10:50 it's easier when you know the road, because the roundabout sign board do not tell you how many lanes are there on the approach of the exit
That's true, some roundabouts don't provide much in the way of signs and road markings.
Learning to drive at the moment and what gets me annoyed is faded or no lane markings on the roundabout & roads & it's hard to have lane discipline at these points I believe the council's should re paint the roads to make it easier for not only learners but for everyone
Agreed, in the UK they spend a lot less on the road than they take from taxing use of the road.
That's great to hear, I may do in the future.
Has anyone ever told you that you look like future F1 superstar, Oscar Piastri? Whom I have no doubt is channeling your driving skills :)
Haha, I'll take that compliment!
Amazing video! This is exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you Richard 😊 amazing, hopefully this will help me pass 🙏 my test 😀 xx
