I bought this bike in Carnival Red color and I'm picking it up this week.
I'm scoffing a bit at all the talk about it being a bike for beginners. I'm coming from a 1000cc 150 bhp sports-tourer and I kinda came to the realization "What can I even do with all this power?". The biker is expensive to maintain, fuel and insure and it is way overpowered for what traveling I do with it.
This scrambler 400 x seems to tick most of the boxes for what I need. Plenty of power, plenty of speed, comfortable, good enough luggage options, light to handle, fuel efficient, cheap to insure and long maintenance cycles. I only plan to do short or medium trips with it and I try to make a point of staying away from freeways as driving on that defeats the whole purpose of driving a motorcycle anyways IMO.
Only thing I could really ask for is a center stand and cruise control, but that's not easy to get at this pricepoint.
I've never had a thumber before, so I wanted to try it out and see what the grass is like on the opposite end of the spectrum from what I currently drive on. I might move on to a small two-cylinder like a Vstrom 650 in a couple of years, but I've definitely found that driving big, heavy motorcycles with hugely overpowered engines is a waste for me.

I agree completely. I’ve gone all the way up to 1000cc in my near 40 years riding, and started working my way back down again a few years ago. I no longer need the ability to cross continents at autobahn speeds, and want something light, manageable, mainly for B-road and country lanes exploring, but with enough poke to make an emergency motorway trip possible. I strongly favour retro styling over stuff like the KTM, and was pretty well taken with these from the first press launch pictures. I put a deposit down in October last year, after seeing one in the flesh at my local dealer. The test ride last month confirmed my initial feeling that it was going to be as close to the perfect bike for me that’s out there, so I upped my deposit and ordered a few extra goodies from the options list.
The dealer called me today and said that it’s likely to be with them in the next week or two. I can barely wait. 👍

First, I have a deposit on the 400X an am waiting anxiously for it! I think I've watched every RUclips video on this bike possible (in multiple languages, lol) and think your walk around with the backdrop of the ocean and lighthouse is by far the best! What a beautiful day. I'm coming from a RE Himalayan which I loved but felt unsafe on Southern California freeways. It also needed the 3 things the scrambler has, more horsepower, a 6th gear, and liquid cooling. I'll be adding a windshield and luggage rack for my annual summer bikepacking trip through the Sierras. Thanks for your perspective on the bike, it really helped solidify my choice!

Hi I had an extended test ride on one I found it a good all rounder on and off road back end of November 2023 but wasn’t allowed to record it same has the Norton 916 SP before they released it.
The scram can cruise a lot more then 60 mph I covered over 1500 miles on it covering all roads West Midlands to the Scottish borders a lot better built the triumph than any RE bike 👍🏍️

I think changing the gearbox sprocket from 14t to 15t would help immensely to counter the short first and second gears, which a lot of owners are doing.

Got mine last minth..that in lime green. Grows on one
This engine will take a couple thousand km to break in and ease up to full potential. Found that low and mid range torque makes for easy handling. Wonderful in the mountains. And the 19 inch front is better than 21...shes composed in corners and while changing direction

Smaller bikes are gaining in popularity. Cheaper to run, can filter through traffic, easy to maneuver round the garage and really flickable. My only problem is 400x or Speed 400 ?

Good luck. I was so impressed by the 400x I asked my dealer if they had any demo speed 400's to try...sadly they didn't as I wanted to do a comparison . My dealer says they have basically all the 400's that they have got on order...clealry a popular bike.

One of the type of people who will be riding this is me. I've been up the ladder, it's very dull unless you want to kill yourself. I've been riding 27 years. I will buy this and still be comfortable with the size of my manhood. Note for all new riders. You can be a proper motorcyclist at any size of engine. Don't feel pressured to get the biggest and fastest. This bike or the cl500 will be my next bike for life.

I've got the 1200xe with road tyres on it and absolutely love riding it everywhere on tarmac / b roads / shitty roads / twisties - my dream bike - I mostly ride alone and never take it off road. On many occasions I've wanted to drive up unknown paths in the woods, but decided against it as 250kg is a bit much to manhandle if required. I am considering getting the 400x as a second bike and putting some 50/50 tyres on it and have that be my dedicated camping / off road / fire road - go wherever machine.

I’m 5’9” and I have no issues with the seat height. My other bike is a Kawasaki Z900RS with the same seat height. If you utilise one foot down at traffic lights, it’s fine, plus chunky soled riding boots helps a lot. Suggest you test ride before discounting it. It’s a fun bike to have around, I love it.

Why do they make the seat height so high on these scramblers. If someone who is 5 ft 9 " is struggling to get their feet down then they're excluding a significant proportion of riders.

    • @alangee2200
      @alangee2200 5 месяцев назад +1

One thing! 10k service intervals, only matter, if you do that Milage! If you only do 3k per annum, then it’s 3k service intervals. Another con, as most bikes don’t do anywhere near 10k.

    • @sanjaysharma-jf8fv

      Agree..
Even if one was doing 10k miles yearly I wouldn't like that lovely little mill to run on the same oil for more than 3-4 thousand miles before a change
Got mine in the lime green last month, did oil and filter changes 200km and 1000 km..so two First ServiceS. Engine has really eased up after 1000 km, at 4200rpm she does 85kmph ...mostly I ride within 4500rpm during break-in. That engine doesn't want to be doing anything more than 65mph for all day cruising. But within that range she's a joy to handle.
And the 400x complements my existing REs 500 & 650 very well. Am taking the Scrambler to ladakh this autumn
