  • It truly is an exciting time for the small capacity motorcycle market, with smaller displacement machines seeing a resurgence and many manufacturers releasing new and updated models in abundance. I was invited down to try a BRAND NEW 400 Scrambler by the guys at London Triumph and I zipped down as quick as I could.
    After a cup of coffee and a catchup up with the team there I took out a brand spanking new Scrambler with only 9 miles on the clock for a blast through the centre of London.
    Let me know in the comments below what you think of the new 400's from Triumph and how they stack against the competition. I'm really excited by the moves that Triumph have been making in 2023, with a new venture into MX and now a single cylinder offering that does NOT disappoint.
    Thank you to Ethan & Will for the help filming this episode, hope you appreciated the addition of a camera car!

    I wish people would stop comparing mid size single cylinder bikes to 1200cc multi cylinder machines. It is what it is. Singles have always been more fun than anything else.

      So true they’re very different. My comparisons just come from what I’ve experienced previously so hopefully it’s a useful insight if people have ridden similar bikes

      Agreed; I’m excited about this bike. I have two speed triple 1200’s, a Thruxton 1200, and look forward to riding this bike and checking it out. So much of this just feels right: good enough power, small enough to move around town and type of off-road 99% of people actually do, and price point and quality.

      The thing is for many of us with 1200s these smaller bikes are also really appealing as an economical daily runner and commuter alternatives to our bigger bikes. I appreciate the comparisons.

    I LIKE the brown seat! Also, good to see tubeless tyres rather than the annoying tubes that Triumph put on the 900 Scrambler - and I don't have a problem with those mag 'spokes' - they're much prettier than a lot of other cast wheels. Glad that the exhaust has been mounted sensibly (unlike the 900), so that two panniers can be used and my overtrousers won't burn on the pipes! Yep, I'm going to try one out - if it goes half as good as it looks, I'll buy it.

    • @Willieswheels
      @Willieswheels  6 месяцев назад +1

      I don’t know why but it just doesn’t make sense to me, but it’s such a minor thing on an excellently put together bike. Good point about tubeless - I’d missed that.

    Great review, mate. I demo’d the Speed 400 last week and I didn’t notice the offset speedo on that particular bike. The instrument cluster would be my only criticism of the bike - the tacho is useless. Couldn’t really fault the bike otherwise, not for the money and with expectations in check. So I ordered one.

    • @dhc8guru

      I personally think the instrument cluster is fine. It is getting a little dated. The color TFT IMO is worse. The unreadable butterfly tachometer is the worse. The digital numeric readout is more legible on my Speedmaster and its tiny.

    • @jamesschneider3828
      @jamesschneider3828 6 месяцев назад +1

      With modern bikes with rev limiter you really don't need a tachometer. If you are new to riding a tach might help but most likely you would rarely use it because your eyes are watching the road and the traffic. Experiences riders will quickly learn how and when to shift by rpm and feel.

    Very nice camera and setup! It was nice taking a tiny tour through London, thanks for sharing! I have the Speed version of the 400’s, just added 1000 miles to the odometer. I hope the buzziness / vibes I feel through the handlebars dissipates as time goes by. Makes my hand numb after a while of riding. I feel the throttle is jerky. Other than that, it’s a nice bike. @@Willieswheels the Triumph accessories I like are the small windscreen, center tank pad, luggage rack, and the high mud guard.
      Not sure if upgraded seat is worth the expense, but it does look sharp.
      I want both the upper and lower engine bars. Still not sure if the upper one comes with the bike. The reviews from India say that it does. I still can’t get a straight answer on that.
      I also like the bullet style turn lights. Again not sure it’s worth the add on price.
      Luggage has been a big thought and I believe the Mosko Moto Reckless 80 will solve all my needs with a Triumph specific Cruz Tools kit in the Fatty Tool Roll.
      For Navigation I will be using the REVER App with my IPhone on a Quad lock mount.

    Test rode one over the weekend. I’m 6”2, 100kg and felt decent. Probably needed the preload on the rear adjusted. I’ve been riding for about 3 and a half years. Had a 250 Honda vtr first and then got a KTM 990 SMT. Had that for a year and rode it less than I did the 250. Sold that and now I’m on the search for a lower displacement retro style cruiser. The 400 feels like it needs an exhaust to make it livelier. Going to wait till the new husqvarna 401 comes out to test but then again there are some great second hand examples of early 2010’s t100 and thruxton’s about. A lucky conundrum to be in I guess😅

    My only concern with the Scrambler 400x is if they had provided Sintered brake pads(as seen on the Speed 400) instead of the Organic pads so the brake bite is not so great comparatively but does the work. But Triumph says that those pads were added intentionally as a sharper brake bite during scrambling (soft-off-roading) may result in the downfall of the driver one too many times🤷🏻‍♂

    Good production quality and a good review.
    Just want to highlight a fact about this bike which got missed- it is manufactured in India by Bajaj Auto under a joint venture between Bajaj and Triumph. Also, It retails here in India at around 3100 Gbp on road. ✌️

    • @Willieswheels
      @Willieswheels  6 месяцев назад

      I didn’t mention the production you’re right. For me it shouldn’t affect the performance of bike - too many people in the UK/US get caught up on where something is made

    • @myselfyuvi
      @myselfyuvi 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@Willieswheelsaffect the performance? Oh no no no!This bike is wicked! I have been owning one for last couple of months and it's totally bang for the buck!
      The reason for mentioning the manufacturing is because as you said if it came with a price tag of 8k, people would happily accept that but the only reason Triumph could pull this beast off at such a low price is due to the mass manufacturing magic of Bajaj. After helping KTM out, they are gonna do wonders with Triumph!

    • @WilliamWBG
      @WilliamWBG 5 месяцев назад

      @@Willieswheels….where something is made is exceptionally important. When countries outsource majority of manufacturing, the long term macroeconomic damages are detrimental to to the successful future of a proper, true middle class. The number of people on government assistance has grown exponentially since the start of outsourcing the manufacturing of goods and services to the Chinese, Indians, and Central America

    • @Willieswheels
      @Willieswheels  5 месяцев назад +2

      All a direct result of rising costs caused by government policies & the constant need by a capitalist economy to make profit over sustainable practices, maintaining a happy workforce & standards. It’s not economically viable to manufacture in the UK because other nations have out developed & out innovated the UK for decades. The quality we’re seeing out of India, South Asia etc is excellent. Look at fender guitars - the Mexican line was always the “cheap” version, but they have been producing products at an equal level or higher per $ than the US for years.
