New Best Weapon for Poo in Earthbound!?

- Yes, you read that correctly, in Earthbound for the SNES, a new ultimate weapon for Poo has been discovered, it grants Poo 80 Offense as well as 80 Guts. That ultimate weapon that has remained hidden for so long is none other than...
A Magic Truffle. Yes, as I've come to find out, because of the way Earthbound handles item management, if you follow a few specific steps, you can equip any item in the game. First what you need to is have a Teddy Bear in your inventory, Super Plush Bear would also work but would make doing this more difficult. Next you need to have any sort of equip next in line in your inventory.. Doesn't matter if it's armor/arms/etc so long as that character can equip it, and lastly the item you want to equip should be immediately under the equip, which is under the Teddy Bear somewhere.
From here you want to pick a fight with something that you think can beat your character in a Speed Check, and then what needs to happen is Poo in this case, has to put on that piece of equipment as his turn, and then the enemy has to take their turn and also turn the teddy bear into a pile of fluff before Poo get to take his turn. If done correctly, it will look like the item was equipped as normal, but if you look in your inventory, you'll notice the item, which in this case, is the Magic Truffle is equipped instead. Bear in mind if you unequip an item that was equipped this way, you have to go through this process to equip it again.
This trick with the Magic Truffle is one of many that can be done with various items in Earthbound with a wide variety of effects. Apparently you can equip anything to any slot, but each item is predisposed to be a weapon/arms/etc, I'm uncertain at this time how to go about this next step, but having a method that's at least easier than getting a Sword of Kings to get a weapon for Poo that's way better is fine with me!

holy crap, thats insane. and i understand why this may happen too. when the teddy bear is destroyed, all items in the inventory move up a space. when you go to equip the crystal charm in the same turn, the game says "equip the item in slot 3", however the item in slot 3 isnt the crystal charm anymore... its the magic truffle!

An extraordinary one at that. Go figure that Prince Poo from a magic kingdom after his "Mu" Training can use a Magical Truffle as his ultimate weapon after all these years

The thing that's extremely difficult is getting the odds of the enemy killing the teddy bear right before poo equips the item
Ideally for Poo you would want to do this the second he joins the party when his stats are lowest, as you can get a Magic Truffle as a trade for the Insignificant Item. I do agree though that it's going to take a little wrangling to get it right since if I remember right Speed checks are slightly randomized

I saw that glitch already in another video about speedrunning. So it's not the Poo's stronfest weapon because you can get it only by using glitches
I get what your saying, but it's such less of a pain than actually getting a Sword of Kings, it's worth sharing. Purists can still grind for the 1/128 run if they wish
Thanks to this weird thing, Paula can equip Ness' legendary bat. Paula must be behind in the turn order in order for her teddy bear to get destroyed before the equippable equips. If the teddy bear gets destroyed in a round when its rightful owner goes first before the enemy, this glitch will not work. I wonder what will happen if you can equip a lucky sandwich or a horn of life as a weapon. What about equipping a multi bottle rocket as a weapon?
A lot of items don't really do much of anything unfortunately. Although now you have me thinking to give Paula the Casey Bat to raise party offense for back attacks since I don't use her for Bashing anyway. I still need to test if say Poo has a Magic Truffle equipped and it's stolen in battle, what would happen if anything?
Are you telling me, that the best equipment for Poo, is having a Truffle as weapon, a soup in the chest, have an armonica on the arms and a large pizza in the head? It is that weird that almost fells canon for Poo

If nothing else you'll have a good weapon to help with the Sword of Kings grind! I know that Poo's equipment effects are unique to him, even with this weirdness, so the other Chosen 3 have the same effects. I imagine there are going to be some great early game combinations with this

I see this type of glitch when I used a cheat code but I don't know that you can do it without cheats
I wonder if enemies could still steal food while you have it equipped. Would that equipment slot become empty, or would it move on to the next item in your inventory?
Good question. I would assume these items could still be stolen, but I'm actually not sure. I do know if you do this trick with nothing in the last slot of your inventory you will equip a "Null" which provides no benefit. Uncertain if Equipment stolen in this fashion you mentioned would trigger a Null or just be considered an empty slot. Might be worth experimenting with?
@@MegaHarv I did some testing and learned how this interaction works. Under normal circumstances (outside of the fact you're using food as a weapon, which is definitely not normal), enemies are NOT able to steal equipped food, which is weird since they shouldn't need to give equipped items protection if enemies only steal food.
However, if the character equipping the food item also has another copy of that same food item in their inventory (it must be positioned after the one they have equipped) then both of them can be stolen like normal.
Unfortunately, having equipped food stolen just empties the equipment slot instead of putting the next item in it, so this doesn't let you do something like equip a weapon in a non-weapon slot like I was hoping. Eating your equipment or using it as a condiment also works this way, both in and out of battle.
I also learned that PP-restoring items can't be stolen though, so at least the magic truffle is safe either way.
@@sfc0450 phew, thank god. poo is only like level 25 compared to the others high 40s and low 50s, poo absolutely NEEDS this truffle to be on par with everyone
@@boomkittyFX yeah, at least he needs less exp for the early levels, but it always felt weird to me that he needs a 1/128 item that's very easy to miss out on permanently just to catch up with the rest of the party in terms of attack power.
Is it really the magic truffle though? What if you use the glitch to equip anything, such as a cookie?
As far as I can tell. Some items dont really do anything, others have varying degrees of effectiveness, from the testing that was done the Magic Truffle appears to be best for Poo

It’s funny how Nintendo put a stat called: Guts, I don’t know what this does tell me in reply’s
The more Guts you have, the more likely you will get a critical hit, also your HP meter will roll down more slowly as well

I can't get this to work now. Poo's speed is too high, way higher than any enemy I'd encounter. He would equip the equipable item before the enemy would attack to kill the bear :(. I used the rock candy glitch and made Poo WAY too strong lol

I have played this game my whole life, well 95% of my life. I knew every last pixel, every last line and never did such a thing.
Oh well, at least I know the secret ending where instead of time travel you fight Giygas in the present as humans. *Hint* in the underworld there is a cave to the north west.
There are some really tough bad guys there, so it helps to be able to leave if you feel stuck.

The fact that Nintendo programmed equipping an item that's not explicitly a weapon into the game is crazy. Just imagine Poo whacking someone with a Crystal Charm or a Magic Truffle XD

It does take a little finagling to get this to work on Poo. If you get the Magic Truffle from the Insignificant Item early on, as soon as you recruit Poo is likely the best time to try this for him
