I can confirm you ruined my best moment
Even at level 99 Ness must still go on his spiritual journey
That's deep bro
So there's a technical secret behind that "At that moment, Ness's psychic powers radically expanded!" line immediately before he gets those 200,000 EXP. It means that the value of his IQ stat has been doubled, from being set to earn 5 PP / psychic points from each IQ point (the same rate as Paula & Poo), to 10 PP per IQ. So on top of normally getting an extra 150 PP from those 15 IQ points he automatically earns from completing Magicant - belatedly absorbing the 'powers of the sanctuaries' - he's also meant to get a 'bonus' 200-250 IQ from the 40-50 IQ points he already has by that point, to represent how his true psychic potential was being held back by the negative emotions he needed to conquer via Magicant.
Unfortunately that's just all dependent on the mechanics of him actually going through the process of at least one more level-up - and if that isn't possible because he already reached level 99, then Ness will lose out on nearly 400 PP, and also the 150 HP he's meant to gain from the Vitalty stat boost from that sequence. So even though this probably wasn't an 'intentional' penalty, ultimately reaching the max level too early pretty substantially handicaps Ness and the amount of times you'll be able to use his ultimate psychic attack and unique party-healing move in the final areas.
That is interesting, explains why Ness' PP is so astronomically higher than theirs even though it doesn't say he got that much in the textboxes, always wondered about that since I get surprised by it just about every time I replay the game, lmao
What if you were only on Level 98?
@@PKSuperStar256 then you would have Ness's theoretical maximum power
@@TheBosteth Ultra Instinct Ness
Ness doesn't get the HP and PP buff because he has negative karma, this is the genocide route.
I can imagine grinding for hours on weaker opponents is a very bad time.
I mean, it's the Fobby's fault for being weak. Like, how you gonna be a late game Foppy and still die to PSI Rockin Beta
On my first playthrough of EB, i got such awful luck on my hunt for the sword of kings i leveled my whole party all the way to 99 in the alien base underneath stonehenge. Needless to say, i missed out quite a bit in magicant...
I was actually told at some point that it would crash the game/softlock you (forgot which) if you got there at level 99, this is actually super interesting, thank you.
I really appreciate your thoughts and efforts on communicating them on this beautiful and so weird work of art. I truly cherish my experiences with this stellar game and having you upload a video on it (every once in a while, alas!) really makes my day. Thank you so much! I will never stop appreciating EarthBound.
I did this exact thing as a kid. KO'd party members, Genociding the Borange Fobbies (appreciated the reference), and steam rolling Magicant.
I was too young to realize I needed to level up at least once to take advantage of the increase to Vitality and IQ.
two uploads in 7 days?! damn bro you are on your grind! keep up the good work!! (even if you don’t post this frequently again)
NESS ISN SANDS
God damn Earthbound is such a deep RPG. The amount of content and NPCs in the game never ceases to amaze me.
Trying to achieve self-actualization but you've already had more character development than the rest of the cast combined:
Character development... allowing all of your friends to die and genociding an entire population of small orange balls with eyes and legs.
What a coincidence, I just played through this specific part of Earthbound today !
4:05 cybershell refrence :0
I love these MythBuster type videos
So what if you're level 98? And you get level 99 during the cutscene. Will you then get the boost to HP and PP?
Yes. To get the full boost you just need to have at least 1 level to still gain.
Why would you waste time killing your friends and murdering fobbies, when you could just get them all to level 99 killing Master Criminal Worms?
They have a spawn tile right above the pyramids in Scaraba, just out of reach of other enemy spawn tiles giving you free reign to walk up and down to spawn worms to your heart's content! Even better, the worm's combat will essentially always auto-resolve, saving lots of time. Worms easily drop enough xp to max out your whole party in the same time any other enemy would take for a single party member, and even then the poisonous denizens of the desert are much more effective at killing your friends then any swamp would be!
Sincerely,
- A Worm Hater
With how rare they are, (about a 10% spawn rate I believe,) this is faster.
@@MonkeyNess there's an extremely easy setup to guarantee the spawn of a master criminal worm though
@@sweetypuss Yeah? Unaware of this.
thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
Completely rationale, except for the Jerma, all made logical sense.
4:02 Was thinking how Cybershell-esque this video (and maybe this channel in general) was, and there you go, there it is
I think cybershell even commented on one of his videos. The google translate one.
I guess because Vitality and Luck increase gives you a boost on your HP and PP respectively, but only when you level up. That's why you got your stats increased but no HP/PP boost.
once i took 6 hours to get the sword of kings so just from this item everyone on my team was level 99, except ness because i let him die so he didn't get to lv 99. i have no idea of how many enemies i heve killed to get that, all that i know is that it certanly was well above 128.
I did this twice as a kid. One time I hit level 99 while getting the Sword of Kings for the only time, and the other I used a Game Genie to max my level.
actual genocide route
Ya know im still waiting for the theres nothing wrong about genocide video by cybershell
Also congratulations for grinding to lv99 your award is ……. Getting less stats?
Like this is the only time where you get punished for grinding too much
Makes sense. When you raise your VIT or IQ (like with a rock candy, something I definitely abused a lot as a kid) you don't get the corresponding HP/PP increase until you level up. More than anything else, I think the 200k xp is more to ensure that you actually level up(unless already at 99, of course) after gaining the Magicant boosts so you get the increase immediately.
Now grind to level 99 in Mother 1 lol.
My Lloyd just hit 93 last night, and I'm about 54 hours in, according to NSO.
Only takes about 9852 Last Starmen!
It's because the game looks at your vitality and IQ stats to figure out how much HP and PP you should have, which is how it decides how much to give you during a level up.
The game also doubles the value of Ness' IQ during this cutscene, so if you had 50 the game will act as if you had 100 when deciding how much you're "supposed" to have and it has give you a ton of PP to catch you up to it's new calculation.
First :D
Yep :D
God I've missed some new Earthbound content
Nice pfp
@@Ness199X You got the best pfp I've ever seen
I wanna know what happens when you skip the second sanctuary and finish it last (after fire spring)
You just get a slightly altered version of what usually happens at the Fire Spring, with Ness falling asleep. This can also happen at the Pink Cloud.
Nice video!
2:20 Dead party grinding is honestly the only way I can get Marle to actually be any good in the lategame of Chrono Trigger... plus it’s an awesome name for a metal band (DPG4LIFE!)
Party members don't earn more exp in smaller parties in Chrono Trigger, each party member earns the same amount of exp *unless* they're knocked out, in which they earn 0.
@@levthelion71810 Totally that's why I would run around with a KO'd party (except keeping Marle alive in this case ;P) Hence the dead party grind whoo-ya
@@SuPeRNinJaRed That just... seems like a lot of extra work for no reason, considering that every dead party member revives to 1 HP after every battle.
CYBERSHELL REFERENCE also cant believe nobody else made a video on this
i always found it so funny that people would warn you about this. the amount of grinding you'd have to do to get even into the 90s by magicant is hilarious let alone 99. also good video yes 👍based pronouncing lumine hall correctly
You did not say "one fourth".
?
oh wow this video was 3 months ago? i finished with 99 a few months ago and it DOES have the scene
I actually ended up doing this on my first playthrough because I was really intent on getting that sword of kings (not worth it rip). imagine my surprise when I finally learned that ness is actually supposed to have wayy more hp/pp for the endgame
I have done the "Level 99 before Magicant" thing before
but who the heck would have casually grinded all the way to level 99 before reaching magicant??? seems like a weird thing to warn you against if you're doing a blind playthrough
It's not uncommon for RPG players to take advantage of things like enemies that yield a lot of EXP, and with the amount of luck involved in getting items like the Sword of Kings, it's possible.
1:45 I fucked died. Immaculate reference 💀
I was trying to find a video of this the other day
