As an artist you can always find some appreciation in your work, you know that all the elements you're bridging together is resonating but you never know when you're actually tapping into something big, that is until you actually put it out ... thats why to them its sort of perplexing ordeal because i doubt they expected this kind of reception, it was probably just another day in the studio trying to come up with something unique ... they knew they where taking it to the next level but i doubt they could possibly imagine the success that album it would garner them.

Even tho they have never been great in interviews , the situation of the band at that moment wasn't the best either. Mushroom didn't like the direction Massive was taking. He didn't like the sound. At this point 3D was really taking over and becoming the captain of the boat...
A lot of tension in general with this band and I guess it just shows in interviews.
Let's not forget they originally come from a collective, have different backgrounds. It's not like the average band with friends who all agreed to make a rock band.
There is a reason why they usually work on ideas separately and then, with the help of producers, try to make all of this more homogenized.

That's easy to judge from the outside but 3D said he has been really hurt by Mushroom departure (he has been asked about Mushroom and Tricky). And I'm sure it wasn't easy. Even tho they never really worked in studio together and came with different ideas, it's still a band and I'm sure it was a lot of tension to decide which direction an album will take and see all your ideas being denied...especially for Mushroom who has been a massive contributor of the 2 first album...meaning the success of this band. Mushroom composed Teardrop with Davidge and wanted Madonna on this track...he had a vision but the other 2 members wanted Liz. From an artistic point of view I can understand his frustration and it really made me sad when he left...but yes : Mezzanine is incredible. And in a way, Mushroom has been there for the 3 best albums of the band.

Yeah I wish Mushroom would open up about it, but he shows here he was more than capable of closing of , he's been MIA for 30 years!. I am pretty sure by the time this was recorded he had already left the Massive mentally. The only article I could find where he talked a bit mentions that he was very unhappy with a lot of the 'musical choices' on Mezzanine, but he was a sample based hip hop style producer and was quoted as saying during recording or at some stage something along the lines of ' are we a fuck'n rock band now' Apparently he and 3d would did most sessions separately and lay down stuff that was apposing a lot of the time, maybe that is why it fused into such a dark and almost dystopian sound in many places. Still so grateful I saw them perform this live in Sydney, Australia in the late 90's.

@@damiensimper Yes, soul and hip hop was Mushroom's thing and it shows in the first two album. You can still hear it a bit in Mezzanine though it's not as pronounced.
