  • This previously unseen footage of young graffiti artist Robert Del Naja (3D from Massive Attack) is a priceless piece of social history. Produced by Morris Weeks and Philip Johnson for the Filton Technical College it shows 3D painting a piece (a stylized portrait of actor Robert De Niro) on Lower Park Row in Bristol, cut with an interview with the man himself.

    Let's see, Robert is shown doing Stencil art on walls, just like Banksy. Robert is a graffiti artist from Bristol, just like Banksy. Robert speaks out on political issues such as the stigmitisation of migrants and Palestinian rights, just like Banksy who has placed politically minded graffiti addressing these same issues at sites such the Calais 'Jungle' camp and the Israeli West Bank Wall. Robert in his job as a touring musician has appeared in various places around the world at the same time and location that Banksy works have sprung up. And Robert has appeared in Banksy's self-directed documentary/mockumentary movie Exit Through The Gift Shop, and scored the music for some of Banky's installation. So yeah, definitely not the same person. At all.

      @secretspurs 6 лет назад +14

      Rosez Yeah, but is your name "Rob", are you from Bristol and amongst part of that crew that began graffing in the 80's? Were you using stencils as far back as 3-D? If you watch other graff docs about Bristol and from that era the other artists all say how much they hated the thought of stencils, how nobody else was doing it back then, how they "hated Banksy" because they thought it cheating, etc. I certainly found it interesting to see 3-D doing stencil art so early on. I also found it very interesting how he talked about his 2 strikes and having to think up new tactics in order to avoid his 3rd ... like working under a new name and hiding his identity perhaps? What is interesting is, since the rise of Banksy and Massive Attack, 3-D doing traditional graffiti on public streets became more of a rarity. He did more commissioned artwork (when working as 3-D at least) and his style changed quite a lot. I always used to think 3-D wasn't Banksy because the style is so different, but when I look at the piece he throws up in this video it is FAR closer to Banksy's style than I ever realised.
