Once I went VR I've never raced flatscreen since. You'll need a much more powerful machine to render high resolution headsets at 90 or 100 Hz, but the difference is remarkable. I race Assetto Corsa, AC Competizione and iRacing in VR on an HP Reverb G2 and it's such a fun experience, even when I come last! The monitor you were using in this video is also going to have caused you some cognitive issues because it had a significant input lag. On a display with minimum input lag you should see the virtual wheel rotate at exactly the same time as the physical wheel, as it does on my machine in VR or 2D. You will have been losing time having to drive reactively instead of being able to process and react to what's happening on screen realtime. Quality vid 👌😊 that motion rig looks like a lot of fun. Getting the DD wheel forces dialled in correctly also makes a huge difference to FFB feel. With Content Manager and CSP in Assetto Corsa the game can look and feel stunning.

Thanks Ben, you just helped with an argument, i continually argue with my Sim racing mates, that for me, it feels unattached , i have never felt as one, in a Sim. and that great feeling, that comes with being in a machine, where you feel you are actually part of it, in total control. But, its a wonderful thing, to teach my 7 year old girls, the basics in race driving. For me, im always over 2 seconds slower, than in real life. the sim is just too jerky, bouncy, and spongy. in my humble opinion and just too add, its safe lol
What would really break the immersion for me is the fact that the screen is fixed ..... it would have to be mounted on the motion rig for me to be happy 😊
Great to see the legend join us in the sim world. 🔥 I give it 5 episodes before the bug has bitten and we see Ben on his own rig at his home ❤😂😂 Looking forward to seeing you drive faster cars and real people 👍
I screamed a little bit when he showed the Lamborghini Challenge game!! I used to play that all the time as a kid and it's the last surviving gameboy game in my collection lmao
I still keep my PS3 around for the sole purpose of the Top Gear UnFamous laps. Visitors to my house have the chance to do a lap on the TG track using a Citroen C3 which is the closest I could find in the game to the Liana. Their best time goes up on the leaderboard, and so far there's 60-odd names. There's even an F1 Driver's list - not that there's been any F1 drivers, but anyone who has a sim rig and can beat the fastest non-simmer goes onto the F1 board. It's really interesting to see how everyone approaches the job of setting fastest laps...safe to say I can predict what'll happen based on how similar people have gone about the drive :-)
Loving this stuff Ben 👍😊 Like you, I spent lots of time years ago on Microprose Grand Prix 2, fine tuning the car setups for the old Hockenheim forest circuit and swapping times with my boss. It got down to shaving thousandths of seconds off our times. Incidentally, I don't remember the Liana having a flappy paddle gearchange? 😉😆
Hey Stig, push this channel with you racing various track/car combos, different sims, setups etc and it will grow quickly. Looking forward to anything you post. "He's been avoiding sim racing for far to long...... but here he is, its the THE SIM RACING STIG. Keep it on the tarmac until it runs out!
Also I would add to that good advice and say do some collaborations with some other big sim youtubers like our good boy jimmy, I don't think many people would turn down to change to make a video with Ben Collins!!. and I can not wait for the new game next year, I am going to rinse it big time on my channel.
Also, I'm not sure how to phrase this without calling him old, but getting in the sim often and getting those hours in is probably one of the best tools to keep your mind and reflexes fresh. I'm happy to see Ben get into sim!
I was born in 1974. My first console was an Atari 2600. After that I had a Spectrum +2, Commodore Amiga and went to PC. I did have a Gameboy in the same colour. As for Jimmy, he does a lot of driving on Assetto Corsa and the Nurburgring. Low fuel motorsport is worth joining. It's like iRacing for Assetto Corsa and ACC without the subscription.
Great video Ben, I been slowling getting in to SIM racing with the Logitech G929 and playing Asseta Corsa on Xbox, I started creating RUclips conent as well :) ! Why not beat your game time in real life!
You should try out Apex Sim Race Centre just down the road at Willand, Tiverton. They have car meets every weekend and a fantastic cafe which serves the best breakfast in Devon. Supercar Sundays is always a highlight. See the cars in the carpark and then go and race them in Apex. Perfect!
love your information on motion very informative, ps ac auto clutch was disable so you would over rev on gear change with auto blip and auto clutch in able for using paddle shifting
It's fabulous to watch such a talent taking us on your journey of attacking the sims! My first sim racing experiences were OutRun (arcade), Microprose (PC), Lotus Esprit Turbo (Amiga), Gran Turismo Series (PlayStation). Would the little green helper help in real life racing?
@@BenCollinsGaming I only discovered your channel today but am so glad I did! The amazing thing about the old F1 GP games was you and your mates could do 100% races and take it turns driving on one computer. When it wasn’t your turn the computer drove your car for you and on occasion would crash it. Geoff crammond’s game had so many features that modern games don’t have like Marshalls recovering cars and waving flags plus the ability to pause the game and go back to watch replays before carrying on. Me and a mate are late 40’s and still playing F1 games only currently F1 2023 on the PS4 with the Logitech G29. Still mediocre playing on around 65% AI but we have a laugh. Keep up the great content!
I’d love to see you have a go on Project Cars 2, I really enjoy you providing your voice for the chief engineer, you sound like a natural on the headset.
A fresh service, bushes and bearings and bits and pieces like that will easily gain a tenth or two, in real life I mean 🙈 If you can ever make this happen again make sure the Liana is freshened up. If it’s a rental or you find one and it’s not the same car then that’s just like pot luck like with go karts. Choose a good one haha. Looooooving your content ❤️
hi ben, I've been reading some of the comments and agree with most of them, here's a concept for you how about you putting some laps down and us as sim racers try and beat your lap time i am sure like me we have always either played the role as THE STIG or have thought we could beat THE STIG in a race. i noted you were using assetto corsa as a platform if you were to try this concept using assetto would be a good platform as iracing needs a monthly subscription i have been told, and may put it out of reach for some racers where assetto is more flexible and easer to add cars and tracks, i have some 180 tracks and around 450 cars in my collection. Great to see you joining the sim world, hopefully you may use some Australian muscle cars in one of your video's, cheers Ron from Perth Western Australia
some good advice in the sim world, bit like the real world to I guess is to play around with the trye PSI. it makes a big differences to the handle in games.
@BenCollinsGaming hi Ben, amazing vid to watch. I know ash Sutton really well, he built my full dbox motion rig, he would definitely be up for that. We could arrange a visit to his showroom and have a side by side race.
Hey stig. Could you maybe do a video about car setup in Sims? Like tyre pressures what's best and also brakes balance. Just to explain how I would go about setting them up. Possible showing the difference of each? Huge fan!
(Bit of advice)Big respect to you. love racing sim, would love real, (not skilled)😅 I do my sim on VR meta quest 3, the depth of field really helps me locate myself in the track, I believe if you mix with a gaming seat like that one, (motion), it is the closest thing to being in the real world
Hey Ben, awesome channel idea, subscribed right away :) ...One quick observation: Check your monitor/tv input lag. Seems like there is pretty big delay between your real wheel movement compared to wheel in the game, which makes the driving more challenging than it needs to be. There definitely are TVs / Monitors that will be faster than this. Also HDMI vs DisplayPort can make a difference, also the panel grey-to-grey response time, and also the input lag of the signal itself, and the screen refresh rate as well.
Hey Ben, glad you've got a channel going. The retro themed graphics is definitely something I can relate to, not to mention gaming in the 80s and 90s :). Would be good to see how you fare, using VR and motion (if it doesn't make you motion sick). There are also many videos out there explaining FOV and the benefits of getting that right. Maybe something to look into, especially once you start doing content using your own rig. Good luck with your channel mate. P.S. Are you planning on having more iRacing centric content or would you concider other sims as well?
I should recommend you put your E-Stop on the inside of your rig rather than the outside. If you need to push it you will get close to the wheel base. put it on the inside and you can kick it with your leg to use the killswitch. My E- Stop is on the inside so if need to be, hands free to push the e-stop. Never needed to use it but better to be safe than sorry
@SimDemon Please can you tell us exactly what track/mods were used, so we can all compare ourselves to Ben (perhaps in the description or a pinned comment)?
Driven many many sims over the years .. GTR ,GTR2 , GT Legends , Race On , Assetto sims , Project Cars 1 , Iracing and more. As well I have driven simcades like Gran Turismo and Forza motors sports , FH4 and 5 as well as Need for speed games and more. SO, saying that I can say with out a doubt that having any sim NOT setup to ones liking is just killing the experience and times. Its takes time to adapt to each setup and get it so it feels right. All of you saying he is using paddle shift or its not a standing start should consider that fact . So the 1:42:9 is from some one who is driving a sim with out properly setting up to his preference . No sim rig has the one setup fits all so he should get it setup to feel right to him. Times to adjust on top of that and the fact the sim he is using IMHO doesn't seem to have perfect tire grip physics as he says just adds more handicaps . All of that taken in to consideration means that the 1:42:9 is not aided by using paddle shifts or running laps. Real life driving is never going to be duplicated in a sim rig 100 percent. Considering his history and proven master skills i d say those times would come down alot faster if on the real track in the real car :) . Plus I get the cursing Ben , I have evented a few new ones when I mess a perfect hot lap up to lol.
I always wanted to replicate this in Gran Turismo 5 to see how well I could place. I don't think any of the reasonably priced cars were featured in the series so it may be tough to source a close match for them in game
Seeing this, I got reminded that I actually drew a top view sprite of a Liana GLX for a 2D racing game last year, and make it as slow as it is. I regret nothing. :D
Makes me wonder how were gear-changes done on TG in the reasonably priced Liana..the celebs were driving manual, weren't they? Would have been cooler if Ben had used a sim also with round wheel and 3 pedals
One thing about real feel... As this is a mod, it's quality may vary A LOT, I have used thousands of modded cars and tracks in Assetto Corsa, and difference is Night and Day regarding quality, even among original cars made by devs. A good starting point would be original GT3 cars and ONLY laser scanned tracks.
Ben, love your videos and I hate to be that guy ... Did not remember the Liana having paddle shifters, would have been epic if you've used this stick 😍🏆
Flat through the follow through? Dangerous words! lol. Although in Matts defense i have only just realised that Flat is not the same as flat-out. Or am i overthinking things. Either way a comment for algorythm.
I see a bit of lag between steering and on-screen wheel. Weird because Assetto Corsa should run on pretty high FPS on that system. Maybe the steering lock is not set 1-1 with the car?
The Liana had paddle shifters!?!? Also, the thing that really impresses me with real racers is their memory and attention to detail - being able to remember the rear brake effect in the real car vs the sim.
I always thought it was strange that there was a sudden influx of laps that beat yours. Maybe more modern pads and tyres plus with the stated extra tarmac. No shame at all in coming behind that list of drivers though, but it would be interesting if you can do the real thing again.
Still flabbergasted that you are most famous for a non-speaking role, when you are so natural infront of the camera. Great stuff, keep it coming!
Thanks again!
This is exactly THE reason, the trio did not want any competition, especially from a well spoken person who is also faster than them 😂

What would really break the immersion for me is the fact that the screen is fixed ..... it would have to be mounted on the motion rig for me to be happy 😊
Love the content!! Subscriber from New Zealand =)
Great to see the legend join us in the sim world. 🔥
I give it 5 episodes before the bug has bitten and we see Ben on his own rig at his home ❤😂😂
Looking forward to seeing you drive faster cars and real people 👍
Couldn't agree more!
I think I read somewhere that they resurfaced the Hammerhead at Dunsfold, and that's why a lot of the F1 drivers were putting in faster lap times.
Actually its Gambon that got widened slightly 👍
I screamed a little bit when he showed the Lamborghini Challenge game!! I used to play that all the time as a kid and it's the last surviving gameboy game in my collection lmao
Looking forward to seeing your own rig and iracing content
That's the plan!
Love that Vectrex boot up sound in the “ Let’s Go” intro.
9:24 "Some say he can take turns without touching the steering wheel."
I miss Topgear track from the Gran Turismo games! so much fun 😃🇬🇧
Nice one Ben. Off to beet your time right now. 👍
Have fun
Time to download the Liana and see if I can beat The Stig around Dunsfold 😂
Great video Ben, I been slowling getting in to SIM racing with the Logitech G929 and playing Asseta Corsa on Xbox, I started creating RUclips conent as well :) ! Why not beat your game time in real life!
You should try out Apex Sim Race Centre just down the road at Willand, Tiverton. They have car meets every weekend and a fantastic cafe which serves the best breakfast in Devon. Supercar Sundays is always a highlight. See the cars in the carpark and then go and race them in Apex. Perfect!
Looking forward to following your journey with this! I'm currently on my own sim project and loving it!
Welcome aboard!
I,m really enjoying watching Ben on RUclips.🏎️
6:57 The Stig doing here "The Jonathan Ross line."
YEEEEEAAAHHH
This is exactly what I need.
Top job Ben.
This is GREAT!!! I'd suggest using the drone cam or cam tool to get the replay/chase cam footage. But that is minor...this is AWESOME!!! thank you!
Thanks for the tips!
Ben Collins, your a funny guy that was great to watch, keep them coming 🏁👍🏼
Sims these days are a serious training tool, and loads of fun!
Really enjoyed this ben, looking forward to the next sim racing vid!
Glad you enjoyed!
Ben, i would like to see you have a go at some rallygames ;)
DiRT or WRC, maybe Richard Burns!
You should do TG Dunsfold laps, on consoles: Gran Turismo vs Forza, see how they compare, which was best, which one let's you go faster...
love your information on motion very informative, ps ac auto clutch was disable so you would over rev on gear change with auto blip and auto clutch in able for using paddle shifting
Geoff Crammond was a big influence in my life too!! Went through all the GP games with my mates!! Happy times on Commodore Amiga 500! 😅
Classic
Not a bad idea
Bit of Ben-Ception
A fresh service, bushes and bearings and bits and pieces like that will easily gain a tenth or two, in real life I mean 🙈
If you can ever make this happen again make sure the Liana is freshened up.
Danny Ric, is a sim freak. Get him on for a head to head. Great vid.
some good advice in the sim world, bit like the real world to I guess is to play around with the trye PSI. it makes a big differences to the handle in games.
Would love to see Ben Vs other racing drivers on Sim. Such as Ash Sutton as he builds sims so i think that would be interesting
That would be cool!
@BenCollinsGaming hi Ben, amazing vid to watch. I know ash Sutton really well, he built my full dbox motion rig, he would definitely be up for that. We could arrange a visit to his showroom and have a side by side race.
Keep on the great content grt from holland
Hey stig. Could you maybe do a video about car setup in Sims? Like tyre pressures what's best and also brakes balance. Just to explain how I would go about setting them up. Possible showing the difference of each? Huge fan!
Learning that the Stig learnt how to drive on a GameBoy is just amazing!
I'm no expert, but I believe he did drive a few cars in between the gameboy days and this video...
Haha - amongst other things - good for discipline and er .. patience
so were the lap times on top gear recorded as flying laps or standing starts like they always showed on the lap videos?
Tyre pressures are very important in assetto corsa. Also use max camber front and rear and your golden.
Thanks for the info!
Microprose’s Grand Prix 2!!! The memories…
Top racing drivers ever 🔥🔥🔥 tysm Mr stig
(Bit of advice)Big respect to you. love racing sim, would love real, (not skilled)😅 I do my sim on VR meta quest 3, the depth of field really helps me locate myself in the track, I believe if you mix with a gaming seat like that one, (motion), it is the closest thing to being in the real world
Who knew watching ex Stig racing esports was going to be my new favourite thing!
The cool thing is, you can take Freddie's suggestions and have them programmed into the Sim, to see how the Liana will be in real life.
This isn't his rig
You need that back ground music that was playing du ring your laps😂😂😂😂
top man ! hope u enjoy the sim racing
I hope so too
I didn't realise the Liana was flappy paddle 😂
was about the say that, there's no point of this sim, if u cant make it authentic.
you so need to get your own sim. keep up the good work .
Where you doing flying laps? And if so does that mean the times are actually flying laps on TG?
Hey Ben, glad you've got a channel going. The retro themed graphics is definitely something I can relate to, not to mention gaming in the 80s and 90s :). Would be good to see how you fare, using VR and motion (if it doesn't make you motion sick). There are also many videos out there explaining FOV and the benefits of getting that right. Maybe something to look into, especially once you start doing content using your own rig.
Good luck with your channel mate.
P.S. Are you planning on having more iRacing centric content or would you concider other sims as well?
Great calls - been having aome major issues in nascar
Ben what are your thoughts on Sims not having dead pedal. Have you ever driven a car with no dead pedal
Was that time done from a standing start or a rolling start?
When did the Suzuki Liana have flappy paddles? I'm sure that's worth a half a 10th
I was born in 82, I loved Gameboy and Nintendo
One thing about real feel... As this is a mod, it's quality may vary A LOT, I have used thousands of modded cars and tracks in Assetto Corsa, and difference is Night and Day regarding quality, even among original cars made by devs. A good starting point would be original GT3 cars and ONLY laser scanned tracks.
Thanks for the info!
Either way a comment for algorythm.
i genuinely think it's his wheel settings holding him back from having the same pace
HEyy nice to see you jumping into online racing. What game/sim is this? I would love to do some laps around Dunsfold
I see a bit of lag between steering and on-screen wheel. Weird because Assetto Corsa should run on pretty high FPS on that system. Maybe the steering lock is not set 1-1 with the car?
Is it me or the sim doesn't feel as smooth when the camera is shown in the third person view?
Go for it Ben! reclaim that hard earned crown!
The Liana had paddle shifters!?!?
Also, the thing that really impresses me with real racers is their memory and attention to detail - being able to remember the rear brake effect in the real car vs the sim.
Some say he has always existed as a simulation
Yes sir welcome to sim world when we going to race on Acc or Ac.
Some say he was created out of necessity in a simulation.....
I always thought it was strange that there was a sudden influx of laps that beat yours. Maybe more modern pads and tyres plus with the stated extra tarmac. No shame at all in coming behind that list of drivers though, but it would be interesting if you can do the real thing again.
I thought the celeb laps were a standing start? Was it a flying lap time for the F1 leaderboard then?
That Assetto corsa needs some realistic PPFILTERS NOW
